Crows
in league dogfight
|
|
Cwmbran
Town bid to emerge top dogs in their Welsh Premier
League basement battle with Cardiff Grange Quins at
Leckwith Stadium tonight (kick-off 7.30pm).
And
the Crows, who hold a three-point advantage over
Quins, are looking to make it lucky 13, having gone a
dozen league matches without success.
In
fact, since beating Connah's Quay Nomads 2-1 way back
in November, they have collected only three points
from 12 outings.
Cwmbran
have a game in hand over their rivals but worryingly
they are four points adrift of NEWI Cefn Druids,
highlighting the importance of a win after the two
teams drew at Cwmbran Stadium earlier in the season.
A win
tonight would be a massive lift for everyone at the
club who are still waiting for the Football
Association of Wales to set a date to consider
allegations of using two ineligible players earlier in
the season, a claim which if proven could be extremely
costly for the Crows, both financially and in status.
Left
back Gareth Wysome, having served a one-match ban
after collecting five cautions, returns to the squad
while Simon Heal (calf strain) and Jamie Edwards
(ankle injury) both face fitness tests having
collected the knocks during Friday night's defeat at
Port Talbot.
The
Crows, after taking the lead through Josh Collins,
went down 2-1, but they were knocked back by a
controversial penalty award against Daniel Clare.
Manager Sean Wharton said: "He was devastated by
the decision. I felt sorry for the boys because they
worked so hard and deserved a point. These decisions
can have a massive impact on games.
"We
more than matched Port Talbot. There is a big
difference in our league positions but in terms of
ability there was nothing between the sides."
Cwmbran
have confirmed their intention to sign former County
defender Andrew Thomas on a temporary basis, but the
defender will not be registered in time for him to
feature in tonight's crucial basement battle.

Bulldogs
appoint Gibson
|
|
Ton
Pentre, Macron Welsh League champions in six of the
last eight seasons, have moved to halt their slide
down the First Division.
Manager
Kevin Richards has appointed a former Ton Pentre
player, Brian Gibson, as his assistant.
Gibson
fills the role vacated by Scott Young, now assistant
to Peter Beadle at Newport County.
The
Rhondda Bulldogs lie in the bottom half and have lost
11 times this season.
Their
patchy form is a long way from their charge to the
title during 2004-2005 when Ton edged out Cardiff
Grange Quins to lift the championship.
Quins
were promoted, while Ton Pentre did not apply to go up
and have decided not to attempt a return to the top
flight until they can improve their Ynys Park ground
and have the financial backing to play at Vauxhall
MasterFit Welsh Premier League level.

Thomas
set for County comeback
|
|
ANDREW
Thomas is likely to re-sign for Newport County, but
the club look set to lose out in a bid to lure back
former skipper Darren Jones.
Jones
and Thomas were both released from prison on Tuesday
after serving time for assault, and the pair, who were
sacked by County in December, are both confirmed
targets for manager Peter Beadle, who spoke with them
on Friday.
Beadle,
commenting after Saturday's morale-sapping loss to
Lewes, admitted that Thomas has been training with the
County academy and was keen to come back to Spytty
Park.
Thomas
is in line to play for a couple of weeks with Welsh
Premier League strugglers Cwmbran Town (starting with
their game tomorrow against Cardiff Grange Quins), in
an effort to boost his fitness and match sharpness.
However,
Jones has been training with Forest Green Rovers and
is unlikely to favour a move to County if he is
offered a deal to stay with the Conference side.

Carmarthen
and Llanelli get show back on the road |
|
What
a difference a week has made to the fortunes of
Carmarthen Town and Llanelli.
Last
week the Richmond Park club were in the depths of
despair following their 2-0 Welsh Premier home defeat
by Bangor City, their fourth successive loss. And
Llanelli's unexpected 4-1 thrashing at Aberystwyth was
the first time they had lost after a run of nine
successive league victories.
But the gloom lifted this weekend as Carmarthen won
2-1 at Caersws and the Reds defeated battling Newi
Cefn Druids 1-0 at Stebonheath Park.
It completed a rare clean sweep for the four South
West Wales sides as Haverfordwest returned from
Porthmadog with an impressive 4-1 success after Port
Talbot had edged out Cwmbran Town 2-1 on Friday
evening at the Remax Stadium.
Carmarthen's repeat of last season's triumph at the
Recreation Ground has elevated them three places, from
10th to seventh, and only goes to prove manager Mark
Jones's belief that the season is far from over.
''It was a massive victory for us and I hope this is
the start of something big,'' said Jones.
''Caersws is never an easy place to secure a win.
Although we have ground to make up on the teams above
us, we still have games in hand over most of them.
''This coming week is a big one as we play Aberystwyth
Town tomorrow night, then travel to Bangor City in the
quarter-final of the Welsh Cup next Saturday.''
Hayden Fleming made his league debut for Carmarthen,
as did former Haverfordwest play-maker Colin Loss,
signed from Merthyr Tydfil, who came off the bench
with 20 minutes remaining.

WPL
from around the clubs |
|
CURRENT
Cardiff City backup Goalkeeper, Martyn Margetson will
become the hot transfer target for the Southern Welsh
Premier League Clubs during the close season.
The
former Wales International will not have his contract
renewed at Ninian Park and stated publicly this week,
that he would probably play in the Welsh Premier next
season.
The
race to sign the 34-year-old would probably be down to
three. Grange Quins and Cwmbran are both facing
relegation and Haverfordwest's current incumbent is
Lee Kendell, the club captain and arguably the best
'keeper in the League. This would leave Llanelli,
Carmarthen and Port Talbot in a straight fight for the
shot stopper.
The
Reds' Duncan Roberts has impressed this season and
Llanelli would probably want Margetson to go
full-time, which he doesn't want to do, so a move to
Stebonheath may be unlikely. Port Talbot and
Carmarthen are both making significant developments
off the field and a high profile signing would mirror
their aspirations.
The
Steelmen's Neil Thomas has been outstanding since
moving from the 'Quins, but Carmarthen's Andrew Delve
has made a number of high profile errors recently, so
Town could be looking for a replacement.
Both
clubs have the chance to qualify for the UEFA Cup,
which would be an incentive for Margetson, who hasn't
played in Europe during his illustrious career,
however, it's likely that only one of the two will
qualify, so this may be the determining factor.
MARK
Jones continues to strengthen his squad with the
signing of former Cardiff City utility player, Hayden
Fleming.
The
27-year-old has Welsh Premier experience with Port
Talbot and Llanelli, but has recently been playing the
Welsh League for Dinas Powys.
LILYWHITES
fans will be delighted to see that inspirational club
skipper Timmy Edwards is close to a return to first
team action. The centre back has been out of action
all season but has come through a number of Reserve
matches recently. Rhyl have struggled for consistency
this term, and the omission of Edwards in the heart of
the defence is certainly a contributory factor.

NEATH
Athletic, runaway leaders of the Macron Welsh League
First Division, were made to fight every inch of the
way by Bettws who are struggling near the foot of the
table.
The
Llandarcy side only got home 1-0 though an early
strike by sharp-shooting Carl Shaw.
Second-placed
Goytre were held to a 1-1 home draw by Bridgend Town,
unbeaten since Drew Phillips took over as manager from
Nicky Tucker.
Darren
Lyons fired Goytre into the lead after just seven
minutes but the impressive Martin Rose levelled
matters a minute from time.
Maesteg
Park added to the woes of fast fading reigning
champions Ton Pentre winning 2-1 at Ynys Parc.
Gareth
Davies scored both the Maesteg goals - one in each
half - while Kyle Morris netted for Ton.
Briton
Ferry are staring relegation in the face after losing
2-1 at home to Barry Town with Francis Ford and Nana
Baah scoring. Sam Brown got the consolation goal for
Ferry.
Afan
Lido suffered a surprise 2-0 home reverse by Newport
YMCA, for whom Daniel Heath and Leon Spargo netted.
Jonathan
Cuss scored a brace as Bryntirion won 4-1 at Caerleon
while a goal by Carl Mainwaring three minutes from
time gave Pontardawe a 1-0 home victory over Ely
Rangers.
The
UWIC students, with goals by Leon Walsh and Sam Small,
won 2-0 at AFC Llwydcoed while Dinas Powys won by the
only goal of the game at Taffs Well.
Pontypridd's
charge at the top of division two was temporarily
halted by Morriston Town who fought back amazingly
from being 3-0 down at Ynysangharad Park to draw 3-3.
Peter
Cheeseman, Liam Grant and Kerry Harding appeared to
have put Pontypridd in a strong position but Neil
Simons, Dean Rosselli and former Swansea City player
Jonathan Coates swooped to grab a share of the spoils,
against the odds.
Aberaman
won 2-0 at fellow promotion hopefuls Garw with goals
by David Brewer and David Pugh.
Pontyclun
put Ammanford to the sword with a 3-0 victory. Gary
Thomas, Adam Davies and Geraint Williams got the
goals.
Penrhiwceiber
won 4-2 at Caerau Ely and there were wins for
Caldicot, Croesyceiliog and Merthyr Saints but the
Tredegar versus Garden Village was called off.
In
the third division, front runners Newcastle Emlyn and
Pentwyn Dynamo dropped points. Emlyn went down 3-2 at
Risca for whom Rhys Isles, Chris Maher and Mike
Colcombe all scored. Pentwyn were held to a 1-1 draw
by Gwent side Goytre.
An
early Nicky Owen goal gave Chepstow a 1-0 success
against Blaenrhondda. West End beat visiting Cwmamman
5-2 while Ystradgynlais overcame Treowen 3-1 with
goals by Nick Maggs, Mike Watham and Craig Hopkins.
Goals
by Barry Herdman and Leon Thomas gave Seven Sisters a
2-1 home victory over Penrhiwfer. There were away
successes for Cambrian Clydach and Treharris at
Cwmbran Celtic and Llantwit Fardre respectively.

Quins
are given hope |
|
Grange
Quins' hopes of avoiding relegation from the Vauxhall
Masterfit Welsh Premier could rely on Cwmbran Town and
three clubs in north Wales.
Cwmbran
face a possible points deduction on an FAW charge of
fielding ineligible players which could drop them
below Quins to the foot of the table - as happened to
Afan Lido last season. And if Guilsfield, Glantraeth
or Buckley - who have not applied for promotion - fill
the top two spots in the Cymru Alliance, only one side
will be relegated.

Steelmen
target ticket to Europe |
|
Port
Talbot Town could be right back in the European mix if
they beat Cwmbran Town at the Remax Stadium tonight.
A
win over the Welsh Premier strugglers would elevate
the Steelmen to within three points of fourth-place
Rhyl, with both sides having 10 matches to play. A
wretched start to the year threatened to ruin Town's
early-season promise, but Wayne Davies's side has
started to blossom again.
Their latest outing was a 3-0 home success against
Carmarthen.
Cwmbran, however, are in serious danger of relegation
for the first time in their history.
They have picked up just three points from their last
11 league matches.
But Davies said: ''We will not be underestimating
Cwmbran. I'll be satisfied with nothing less than
maximum points from the match.
''The lads should be confident as we are playing well
right now.''

Nicholas
confident reds can re-group |
|
Hopes
are high at Stebo that Saturday's 4-1 defeat at the
hands of Aberystwyth will be long forgotten by Tuesday
night.
With
two games in four days, Reds manager Peter Nicholas
wants to move on from the disappointment failing to
build on their ten game winning streak. "It's a
big week for us and a good opportunity to get back on
a winning run," Nicholas told the Star.
"With the Newi Cefn Druids game on Saturday, and
then Connah's Quay Nomads on Tuesday, the lads want to
get back to work."
The Aberystwyth defeat hit the Reds hard, says
Nicholas, but he is philosophical about the result.
"We deserved it," he said. "Nobody
played well and they were the better side. They took
their chances - good luck to them.
"But that happens sometimes - you've got to put
it behind you; pick yourself up, dust yourself down
and move on."
And after Saturday and Tuesday's games - February's
last - further testing times await Nicholas's men.
"March is an important month for us," said
former Wales midfielder Nicholas. "We've got six
league games, so lots of points are up for
grabs."
Nicholas said the squad had no injury worries ahead of
Saturday's home game with 15th-placed Newi Cefn
Druids. Newi are expected to name former Wrexham
trainee Osian Jones and striker Darren Williams, who
has netted seven times from 11 starts. Kick off
2.30pm.

Second-placed
Goytre United are set to give striker Richard Ryan
another week to recover from a hamstring pull.
The
22-year-old Swansea University history student is
looking towards a return in the Welsh Cup
quarter-final clash with Rhyl at Belle Vue a week
tomorrow. Assistant Goytre manager Andrew Radford will
look after team matters at home to Bridgend Town
tomorrow, as manager Craig Duggan is running the rule
over Rhyl at Newtown.
However, utility player Kevin Davies, a recent signing
from Bridgend, is set to start against his former club
while Jonny Walkley has recovered from a foot injury.
But John Meacock is still troubled by an ankle injury,
and is doubtful.
Leaders Neath Athletic, who were toppled last time out
by visiting Afan Lido, have defender Liam Hancock
suspended.
Striker Chris Miller is likely to be out for a month
with a hamstring pull, while a late fitness test will
be run on defender Steve Evans (rib injury).
Afan Lido manager Mark Robinson has Paul Evans
suspended for their encounter with Newport YMCA at the
Marston Stadium, while there are also injury problems
to consider.
Briton Ferry, who have appointed new joint-managers in
Paul Barrow and Gareth Colwill, take on Barry Town at
Old Road.
Dan McGrath has declared himself available, while
Ferry are set to continue with a youth policy that has
seen Scott Barrow, Cameron Hopkins, Daniel Thomas and
Lee Parfitt all show immense promise over the last
month.
However, time is not on Ferry's side in the battle to
avoid the drop, and they will be looking to put one
over former club favourite Francis Ford, who is now
joint-Barry manager.
Pontardawe Town have signed West End top-scorer Darren
Griffiths ahead of tomorrow's home game with improving
Ely Rangers.
Ian Morgan and Michael Chaves, who both missed last
Saturday's 2-1 away defeat against Barry, are both set
to return.
Maesteg Park, who visit falling giants Ton Pentre,
will be boosted by the return of Richard Stevens from
a one-match ban.

I'll
bring in new faces says Jones |
|
Carmarthen
Town manager Mark Jones has promised a shake-up of the
team in a bid to end the run of Welsh Premier League
defeats.
After
losing the last four games without scoring Town have
slipped into the bottom half of the table to tenth
place.
Their latest 2-0 defeat was at the hands of Bangor
City at Richmond Park on Sunday.
A brace of new signings are expected to be made within
the next week but Jones is keeping details firmly
under wraps until deals are made.
Jones told the Journal the club must regroup quickly
and get back to winning form if they are to finish the
season on a high.
He hopes the new signings, including Kaid Mohamed from
Llanelli whose made his debut against Bangor, will
breathe new life into the side.
Jones said the loss of veteran goalkeeper Tony Pennock
to Newport County, left-back Gary Lloyd to Llanelli
and midfielder Richard Kennedy's move to live in
Ireland had all been massive blows to the club.
Jones said: "We have lost three very experienced
players over the last few months, there is no denying
it, but we have to get back on form fast."
But a number of injuries are also hampering Town's
performance.
Jones added: "Rhodri Jones is out of action for
up to five weeks to have an operation on his knee and
Richard Carter and Martyn Giles were injured playing
against Bangor.
"This is the first bad run we have had since I
came to the club a couple of years ago and I am not
going to let it continue, I can't afford to.
"The plan is to get some new signings on board,
all from Welsh clubs and regain some stability in the
squad."
Town has two games in hand in the league and Jones
said the lads must capitalise on the opportunity to
get points and put balls in the net.
"We have games in hand which will give our
confidence a boost and we need to come away with
results", he said.
Town face two mid table clashes this week. First up is
Caersws away on Saturday before Aberystwyth Town at
home on Tuesday night.

CARDIFF
CITY and Wales goalkeeper Martyn Margetson looks set
to retire from professional football at the end of
this season.
Margetson
has barely got a look-in at Ninian Park this term,
making just two appearances in the Carling Cup, and
has been told by manger Dave Jones his contract will
not be extended.
Despite
being aged just 34, Margetson now says his family are
happily settled in South Wales and he will not move
them again to play for another club.
It
limits the shot-stopper to just Swansea and Bristol
for professional terms. a move he says is unlikely.
He
said from the summer he will be open to offers from
League of Wales clubs and will concentrate on a
property development business he has set up with
fellow former Welsh international John Robinson.
"My
family are settled in Port Talbot now and my two boys
are at a good school and, at this stage, I'm just not
prepared to uproot everyone again to go to another
club.
"I
would join a club I could commute to, but that limits
me quite a lot down here, so I'll be looking at League
of Wales next season I think."

Cwmbran report officials after loss |
|
CWMBRAN, struggling against Welsh Premier league relegation and in hot water with the authorities, have taken the unusual step of reporting the officials in charge of the recent match in which Welshpool defeated the Gwent club 5-1, writes Chris Smart.
They are gunning for Flintshire referee Adam Richards and his assistants Peter Roszkowski and Maldwyn Williams.
And Cwmbran are not just complaining of the way the trio handled the game but also about an after-match dressing-room meeting between manager Sean Wharton and the referee after Wharton had complained of being "treated like a child".
"It always seems to be the referee who report players and club officials, so why should match officials not be reported?" exclaimed club chairman Mike Lewis. The club has written to league supremo John Deakin, who is now investigating the matter.

RUNAWAY
second division leaders Pontypridd could manage no
better than a 1-1 draw at Penrhiwceiber.
George
Cole scored for Penrhiwceiber with Paul Penikett on
target for Ponty.
Garw
continued their relentless push for promotion when
they added to the woes of relegation-threatened
Porthcawl with a 2-1 success at Locks Lane.
Tony
Wallace scored both the Garw goals while Lawrence
James got a consolation for Porthcawl.
In
a top-of-the-table battle the impressive Aberaman
proved far too strong for Croesyceiliog and swept to a
convincing 4-1 win.
Richard
Jago was in brilliant form as he snatched a hat-trick
and Will Davies got the other Aberaman goal, while
George Jenkins was the Croesyceiliog marksman.
Goals
by Paul Jenkins and Adam Callan gave Troedyrhiw a 2-1
victory at home to Tredegar.
Newcastle
Emlyn continued their drive for promotion from
Division Three when they defeated Cwmbran Celtic by
the only goal of the game scored by Simon Gilderdale.
A
Craig Hopkins strike was sufficient to give
Ystradgynlais a 1-0 triumph at Cwmamman while
Treharris beat Risca 5-1 through Ryan Arthur from the
penalty spot, Matthew Howells, Ian Batten, Geraint
Corkery and Anthony Thomas.

Llanelli
look to exorcise Aber ghost |
Llanelli
will have to break a long-standing hoodoo at Park
Avenue tomorrow if they are to extend their Welsh
Premier nine-match winning sequence.
Aberystwyth
has proved to be a bogey venue for the Reds who have
failed to win on the West Coast on any of the nine
previous encounters between the sides. And the
magnitude of the task is not lost on manager Peter
Nicholas.
He said: ''Make no mistake, this could be a very
difficult game for us.
''Aberystwyth is always a tough place to gain a result
and Brian Coyne has turned around their fortunes since
joining them.
''I had them watched at Caernarfon last week and they
were unlucky to lose 4-2 and looked very impressive
during the opening half.''
With the top four sides all showing their pedigree
during the last month, there is no margin for error
for second-placed Llanelli, whose four-match losing
sequence in the autumn made a big dent on their
season's prospects.

Goytre
hoping to snap up ex-swan Kevin |
Goytre
United are showing an interest in Bridgend Town
utility player Kevin Davies ahead of tomorrow's first
division match at Dinas Powys.
The
Port Talbot side, who hope to include the former
Swansea City youth player in their line-up, will be
attempting to get within nine points of leaders Neath
Athletic whose game at Bridgend has been called off.
The death earlier in the week of Neath vice-president
Malcolm Judd, a former Skewen Athletic stalwart of 40
years, has caused the postponement, but Sunday's West
Wales Senior Cup tie at Briton Ferry will go ahead.
Goytre, who gained a 4-2 home win over Newport YMCA in
midweek, could again be without the injured trio of
Richard Ryan (hamstring), John Meacock (ankle) and
Johnny Walkley (foot).

Jailed
pair may return to County |
|
NEWPORT
County boss Peter Beadle has confirmed that talks are
planned for next Wednesday with former skipper Darren
Jones and defender Andrew Thomas.
The
pair were sacked by the club on December 28 after
being found guilty of assault and sentenced to a year
in prison last November, but both men are scheduled
for release on Tuesday.
Beadle
has visited the players since they were jailed and is
open to the idea of bringing one or both of them back
to the club if the board members and supporters are in
agreement.
He
explained: "Darren and Andrew are released next
week and after the Dorchester match (away on Tuesday
night) is out the way I will talk to both of the boys.
"I
don't know what the future holds for them but
certainly there is a possibility of one or both of
them coming back here.
"They
are both focused on getting back to football when they
are out and are both in good shape, they have both
actually lost weight.
"Obviously
we have issues to discuss with the board before making
a decision on them, but I am looking forward to
speaking with them."

Quins
continue a fight for survival |
|
Cardiff
Grange Quins, searching for a lifeline to avoid
relegation, face a crucial weekend in the Vauxhall
MasterFit Welsh Premier League.
Bottom
of the table Quins are at home to Newtown tomorrow,
while Cwmbran Town, the team just above them, are at
home to leaders TNS tonight.
Mid-Wales
team TNS are 13 points clear at the top and look
certain to retain their title.
Struggling
Cwmbran are a mighty 41 points behind TNS, whose
attack is led by the League's top scorer, Marc
Lloyd-Williams, on 23.
There
seems little hope for Cwmbran against TNS, even though
they made life difficult for full-timers Llanelli last
week before losing to a late winner.
Quins
have lost five of their last six matches and could
just provide Quins with a glimmer of hope.

Lloyd's
European dream |
|
After
tasting European football with Barry Town and
Carmarthen, Llanelli product Gary Lloyd admits it
would be a dream to play continental soccer at Stebo.
The
33-year-old left-back last week signed a full-time
contract with the Reds - 12 years after leaving for
Barry. After winning seven league titles, the Welsh
Cup and beating Portuguese giants Porto, Lloyd left
Jenner Park for Newport County. After spending a year
at County, he made moved closer to home with
Carmarthen Town. This season he featured in the club's
successful Uefa Cup campaign and played against the
Reds, but is now glad to be back home.
"If you asked any of my mates, I was always going
to come back," he said. "Llanelli's results
are the first I look for. It is my hometown and I'm
really glad to be back. Carmarthen were brilliant to
me and I enjoyed my time there, but hopefully I can
help Llanelli get into Europe for the first ever
time."
Having gone head-to-head with former Uefa Cup and
Champions League winners Porto, Lloyd brings a wealth
of knowledge to the club. He was part of the Barry
squad that was hammered 8-0 in front of 50,000 Porto
fans but beat them 3-1 at Jenner Park. "Europe is
a great level to play at," he said. "The
experience of it is fantastic. I was in front of a big
crowd at Porto and then we beat them and I scored a
penalty. Carmarthen did well this season in Europe and
now it's Llanelli's turn to taste it."
The Reds are looking hot favourites to land the Uefa
Cup clinching second spot.

Cwmbran
born
keeper makes Wales squad |
|
CWMBRAN
born stopper Glyn Garner has been rewarded for his
fine form this season with a call up into the Welsh
national squad.
Boss
John Toshack, who has picked a very youthful squad,
has rewarded Garner for his outstanding form with
League Two outfit Leyton Orient this season.
The
former Bury goalkeeper, 29, has turned in some
eye-catching performances this term, most notably when
Orient took the scalp of Charlton thanks to a 2-1 win
at the Valley in the FA Cup third round.
Garner
played a huge part in that unlikely result, saving a
second half penalty to keep his side ahead.
On
his inclusion, Toshack commented: "The inclusion
of Glyn should be a signal to all of the Welsh players
out there, we know where you are and we are aware of
your talents.
"Glyn
is 29 and is playing, albeit at a lower level, in a
successful side.
"We
noticed his performance against Fulham at Craven
Cottage where he saved a penalty and soon after he
played very well at Wrexham.
"He
performed well in the FA Cup fourth round at Charlton
and is a good option for us.

Bridgend Town
have appointed Drew Phillips manager until the end of
the season.
Phillips had been
working with coach Ryland Morgan in charge of team
matters at the Macron Welsh League club on a caretaker
basis.
Bridgend produced
a big result when they won 4-0 at champions Ton
Pentre, Andy Mainwaring scoring a hat-trick.
Ton are hoping to
ease their misery against bottom club Bettws next
Saturday.
The Rhondda
Bulldogs will have captain Andrew Seburn available to
face his former club after a one-match suspension.
Taffs Well
manager Mark Evans is making progress with his plans
to rebuild the squad.
He is working
alongside former Cwmbran Town player Adam Moore and
ex-Cardiff City player Barry Hughes, but admits it has
taken time to sort things out.
'A year in charge
has opened our eyes to a lack of loyalty,
professionalism and commitment,' said Evans.
'Changes were
made, individuals have now moved on and the club is
rapidly progressing.'
The future for
Barry Town is unclear as they continue to play 'home'
matches at AFC Treforest, Pontypridd.
Owner Stuart
Lovering appears no nearer solving his disagreement
with Vale of Glamorgan Council, but it is crucial the
club return to Jenner Park in the near future if they

now have Jenner Park as their home stadium, while

Cwmbran
keeper Gareth Wesson rejoins YMCA |
|
Goalkeeper Gareth Wesson has returned to his football
roots and plays for Newport YMCA in their tough Macron
Welsh League Division One game at Goytre United
tonight (kick-off 7.15pm).
And Wesson, who
quit Cwmbran Town last week, can expect a rather busy
time against the side lying second in the table to
Neath, where the YM won last month, and with designs
on a place in the Welsh Premier League.
Goytre, beaten
just twice in 18 league games and on a run of eight
league wins, have six matches in hand over Neath and
are 15 points adrift.
Wesson, who
played as a youth for the YM, went on to Newport
County before spending a couple of seasons with
Plymouth Argyle.
However, the
YM will be without Leon Spargo and Steve Edwards who
were both dismissed during the 2-2 draw at Taffs Well.
Their places are taken by Faris Yafai and Robert
Wigmore respectively. Aaron Stewart is unavailable
through work and Daniel Cueto steps into the line-up.
However, the
experienced Darren Porretta is still absent from
midfield with a calf injury but it is hoped he will
have recovered in time to face AFC Llwydcoed at

Martyrs
open door to Gazza approach |
|
Merthyr
Tydfil are, I'm told, making an audacious bid to bring
Paul Gascoigne on board as player-manager.
Discussions
have started between club representatives and Gazza's
advisors about a shock move to boss the Southern
League Premier Division side.
Struggling
Merthyr believe the Gascoigne factor could help bring
in the kudos, sponsorship and top players they need to
achieve their dream of climbing into the Nationwide
Conference.
But
first they want discussions with Gascoigne to discuss
the so-called drink issue which marred his spell in
charge of Kettering.
I
understand the Gascoigne for Merthyr prospect has
emanated from the Welsh club's vice-chairman Paul
Sugrue speaking to the ex-England star's advisors.
Sugrue
has suggested that if Gazza wants to get back into
football management, a progressive club like Merthyr,
who can potentially draw decent gates, would be a
great opportunity for him.
Gascoigne
is out of the country, but he returns this week when
Merthyr hope to open official talks.
Club
secretary Anthony Hughes confirmed that provisional
discussions had taken place.
"But
at this stage I want to emphasise it has gone no
further than that," he said.

Goytre
United gained an excellent 2-1 home victory over UWIC
to keep the pressure on first division leaders Neath
Athletic.
The
Port Talbot side, who previously lost to the students
on penalties in the Shamrock Travel Cup, took the
spoils on the back of first-half goals from Ryan Penny
and Michael Waters. The win left Goytre 15 points
behind Neath with six games in hand going into
tomorrow night's home game with Newport YMCA.
Neath regained their poise - following a 2-1 midweek
defeat against Afan Lido - with a crushing 4-0 home
victory over Dinas Powys.
Andy Hill headed them ahead in the 20th minute, with
Jonathan Keaveney doubling the lead right on
half-time.
And the return of Ryan Frankcom coincided with him
rounding things off via a two-goal contribution.
Maesteg Park triumphed 2-1 over Pontardawe Town at the
Recreation Ground to climb into third spot. Paul Jones
fired the Old Parish side into a second-minute lead
with ex-Maesteg man Mark Dunford equalising.
It was 1-1 at the turnaround and Park, who visit Afan
Lido tomorrow evening, went on to fashion a
70th-minute via Ian Shepherd.
Briton Ferry hauled themselves off the bottom with a
2-1 victory over fellow strugglers Bettws at Old Road.
Second-half goals from strikers Richard Howell and
Richard Gaye improved the chances of them avoiding the
drop.
An
Andrew Mainwaring hat-trick, along with a Martin Rose
strike, set up a surprise 4-0 victory for Bridgend
Town at Ton Pentre.
Another hat-trick man was Frenchman Ben Tholma, of Ely
Rangers, in their 4-0 home win over Bryntirion. Gareth
Cummins was also on target.
In the second division, Garden Village saw their
promotion push falter during a 2-0 set-back against
Troedyrhiw at the Willows.
Goals in each half from Richie Collins and Julian
Bartley condemned Village to defeat during a
disappointing display.
But Morriston returned to winning ways with a 3-1
victory over Cardiff Corries at the Riverside.
Though going a goal down within a minute, a stunning
strike from Mark Carlyle restored parity.
Paul Sweeny sent the Dingle men in with a 2-1 lead,
but they did not seal victory until the 80th minute
when Michael Chapman struck.
Garw maintained third position with a 2-0 victory over
Ammanford at Blandy.
Lewis Williams gave them a 20th-minute lead with
Thomas Hopper lobbing goalkeeper Rob Thomas on the
restart.
The Rice Roaders were awarded a 70th-minute penalty,
but John Chorley made a brilliant to save to frustrate
Cerison Davies.
Goals from Luke Bowen and Dan Harris saw Porthcawl
twice ahead at second-placed Croesyceiliog, but the

Llanelli
shoot down Airbus |
|
LLANELLI
came into this game with only two goals conceded in
their last six games - all of which were won.
Faced
with a challenge of that order, Airbus gave the
impression of aiming for a scoreless draw.
It
took half an hour before the home side fashioned a
clear chance - they did the crucial thing and scored
from it. Jacob Mingorance broke through the middle,
and slipped the ball to Ivan Nofuentes, who scored.
Nofuentes,
playing as an out-and-out winger, went on to have a
crucial effect on the game. On the hour, he chased a
lost cause, kept the ball in play, and squared for
Neil Thomas to blast home.
Finally,
Cortez Belle competed for a loose ball, lobbed the
Airbus centre back, John Davies, and Nofuentes smartly
chipped it over keeper Adam McGee.

WELSHPOOL
put their quest for European soccer this summer back

Lying
third, the Mid Wales men never looked back after
carving a three goal lead in the first 10 minutes,
with top scorer Steve Rogers opening the account by
converting a second minute penalty after being brought
down in the box.
Rogers
then headed a second four minutes later courtesy of a
Mike Thompson cross from the left and strike partner

Cwmbran

But

Griffiths
dazzles for Port Talbot |
|
Port
Talbot 3-0 Carmarthen
THE
recent form of these two sides gave the visitors hope
that they could, by the final whistle, be just one
point behind Port Talbot.
Three
wins and three defeats in their last six league games
is nothing to write home about, but it was a lot
better than Port Talbot's solitary victory, bracketed
by five defeats.
That
things did not work out that way was down to a
much-improved performance by the home side. They
competed strongly in midfield, and the defensive
frailties that had accompanied their recent poor spell
seemed a thing of the past.
Rhys
Griffiths is chasing Marc Lloyd-Williams at the top of
the goal-scoring charts. However, more important
yesterday was his performance as a goal-maker.
The
opener came when Leigh de Vulgt collected the ball
deep in defence and spotted Griffiths upfield. From
his long pass, the striker laid the ball into the path
of Lee John, who used his pace to get to the ball and
chip the advancing keeper.
That
was the only score in the first half, but Wayne Davies
was able to get his team together and reflect that
there had been little real threat from the visiting
attack.
Either
side of half-time is described as a good psychological
time to score - and Port Talbot did just that.
Griffiths
was heavily involved again, this time fighting for the
ball in the area, and squaring for Dean Johnston to
fire home from 12 yards with a right foot shot.
Port
Talbot closed the door five minutes later when
Griffiths got his reward by grabbing the third. This
time, a cross fell to Matthew Rees, who was up from
defence and proceeded to shoot like a defender.
However,
his scuffed effort was seized on by the predatory
Griffiths who finished clinically.
Shortly
after, Tommy Hooper came up from defence but hit the
crossbar.
The
visitors, after losing this six-pointer, are now seven
points behind their south Wales rivals - albeit with
three games in hand.

Carmarthen
hope to bounce back |
|
Port
Talbot are hoping their recent improvement in fortunes
will continue when arch rivals Carmarthen Town visit
Richmond Park tomorrow in the Vauxhall MasterFit Welsh
Premiership.
Four
points from their last three Welsh Premier matches
comes on the back of a succession of defeats with the
improvement maintained with a 1-1 draw at Caersws on
Tuesday night. Rhys Griffiths bagged his 19th league
goal of the campaign to earn Town a point and this
followed on from the weekend's 3-1 Welsh Cup victory
at Cwmbran.
''It was a good match at Caersws and despite the
horrendous weather there was a surprising amount of
good football played,'' said Steelmen boss Wayne
Davies.
''I thought a draw was a fair result although we were
a bit disappointed as we created the best
opportunities but failed to deliver.''
Turning to the Carmarthen challenge, Davies added:
''They need to kick on while we are doing particularly
well to be where we are in the table.
''Carmarthen are a good side and we always look
forward to playing them.
''This season we've beaten them 1-0 in the Premier Cup
at our ground and should have won at Richmond Park,
but they equalised late on.
''It's going to be difficult but I am hoping we have
turned the corner.''
The hosts are strengthened by the return of Jonathan
Coates and Dean Johnston who were both unavailable for
Tuesday's trip to the Recreation Ground.
The outcome of the match could hinge on how well
Carmarthen have recovered from their heartbreaking 3-2
extra time defeat by Swansea City, on Wednesday

Neath
aim to recover from defeat |
|
Leaders
Neath Athletic will be looking to get back on track in
the Macron Welsh League first division tomorrow when
they entertain Dinas Powys.
The
Llandarcy Park side fell to only their third defeat of
the season when they were beaten 2-1 by Afan Lido.
This left Neath 15 points ahead of Goytre Utd, who
have six games in hand, but the slip-up has certainly
encouraged the chasing pack.
Lido included Andrew Pearson on dual registration from
Port Talbot Town, but it has yet to be decided if he
will figure tomorrow at relegation-threatened AFC
Llwydcoed.
Phil Holmes covered the bench against Neath, having
been on the sidelines since the autumn.
Top
billing goes to the Glenhafod Park meeting between
Goytre Utd and UWIC, a fortnight after the students
eliminated the Port Talbot side from the Shamrock
Travel Cup.
Fitness tests will be run on top scorer Richard Ryan
(hamstring) and midfield operator Jonny Walkley (foot)
but centre-back Steve Healy returns to the squad,
having been cup-tied last weekend.
Striker Kevin Bartley completes his suspension, making

Carmarthen
heartache as Trundle seals it |
|
CARMARTHEN
TOWN suffered heartbreak at Richmond Park last night
when a Lee Trundle goal in the opening seconds of the
second period of extra-time put Swansea City through
to the final of the FAW Premier Cup.
Kenny
Jackett's side now meet Wrexham in the final - a
repeat of last season's clash - but it could easily
have been an all-Welsh Premier affair that settled the
cup's destination.
Just
as TNS were denied in the final minutes of normal time
by Wrexham last week, Carmarthen suffered the same
fate when Andy Robinson's injury-time equaliser forced
the match into an extra period of 30 minutes.
All
money was on Swansea's superior fitness to see them
through to victory, but the home side matched them
stride for stride until Trundle, returning to the
visitors' line-up after a lengthy period of injury,
weaved his one moment of magic.
But
Carmarthen manager Mark Jones can feel justifiably
proud of his players who showed, as TNS did, that
standards are on the up in the Welsh Premier League.
A
relieved Jackett paid tribute to the Richmond Park
side. "Lee (Trundle) finished it with a very good
goal but, fair play to Carmarthen, they pushed us all
the way," he said.
"It
was a fantastic performance by them and they stretched
us all the way.
"The
first half was scrappy, but I said to the lads at
half-time to keep going and see if we could open them
up."
In
front of a record home crowd, Carmarthen nearly made a
sensational start when they should have taken the lead
after 90 seconds with the best manufactured
opportunity of the opening half.
Sacha
Walters, returning to the home line-up in place of
Mattie Davies - the only change from the side that
defeated Prestatyn Town 2-1 in the Welsh Cup at the
weekend - initiated the move.
The
former Afan Lido flyer made great strides down the
left flank and his powerful cross was headed goalwards
on the angle by Mark Dodds, but the ball flew just
over the bar.
It
was Carmarthen's only chance of the opening 45 minutes
with Swansea limited to three harmless shots on goal
by teenager Shaun McDonald, who impressed with some
neat touches.
The
match badly needed a spark and it arrived on the hour
mark, courtesy of a howler by home keeper Andrew
Delve.
Leon
Britton, a constant threat to Carmarthen playing just
behind his strikers, raced clear after home defender
Martyn Giles failed to deal with the danger.
Britton's
powerful drive from 15 yards should have been a
bread-and-butter save for the former Newport County
keeper, but he could only look in horror as the ball
squeezed under his body and into the net.
But
a whirlwind three-minute spell turned the match on its
head as Carmarthen turned a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1
advantage.
Neil
Smothers fired a free-kick from the edge of the box
which struck sub Sam Ricketts and rebounded into the
net to put Carmarthen level.
And
Ricketts suffered more pain seven minutes later when
he failed to deal with a high ball into the box,
allowing Nathan Cotterrall to out-jump him with a
header that went over keeper Brian Murphy and into the
net.
The
introduction of Leon Knight and Andy Robinson, with 12
minutes remaining, was Jackett's last throw of the
dice and proved the turning point.
After
a far from match-fit Trundle had headed over from
point-blank range, Robinson took the match into
extra-time with a last-gasp overhead kick from Alan
Tait's supply to ruin Carmarthen's ambition.
There
were few opportunities in extra-time until the first
minute of the second period when Trundle spun
impressively to side-foot the ball past Delve to earn
the Swans a fortunate passage to the money-spinning
final.

Thomas
late show is real stunner for the Crows |
|
A
LAST gasp Neil Thomas goal earned Llanelli their
eighth successive league victory and put them above
Welshpool into second in the Welsh Premier.
But
it was a shattering result for lowly Cwmbran, who
looked on course for a surprise point after a battling
performance that confounded their recent dismal
sequence of results.
The
Reds came into the match on the back of their epic 1-0
Welsh Cup victory over TNS, but were only a pale
shadow of the side that turned over Ken McKenna's men.
Despite
enjoying long periods of possession, there was little
sparkle up front with the Crows defence enjoying one
of their finest 90 minutes of the campaign.
With
a point seemingly in their grasp, Cwmbran suffered
their massive disappointment when Thomas picked up a
loose ball on the edge of the box and fired home a
powerful, deflected shot.
The
hosts were limited to several half-chances, but will
take great heart from this performance as they battle
against relegation.

Cornelly
United continue to lead the premier division thanks to
a 3-1 victory at Corus Steel. Paul Roache, Mike Wilson
and Carl Owen netted for Cornelly, while veteran Colin

Four
Winds stay on Cornelly's heels after a 3-1 victory

Grove Park, who are also in the championship hunt, did
their goal average a power of good after a thumping
16-0 victory at Newton Wanderers.
Croeserw earned three points thanks to a 5-2 victory
at Baglan Red Dragons.
Market Tavern lost at home to Port Talbot Town 5-1.
Town's goals came from Gary Underwood (2), Steve
Davies (2) and Gareth Powell.
The top two sides in division one, Old Surgery and FC
Cornelly, were without matches which gave Port Talbot
Town the chance to close the gap.
They took advantage by defeating Abercregan Refresh
5-2, while Cwmavon Welfare managed only a point after
a 2-2 draw with lowly Croeserw.
Also sharing the spoils with a 0-0 draw were Cornelly
United and Trefelin BGC.
Porthcawl Town and Margam YC drew 3-3. Jack Spillers,
Richard Comley and Ricky Thomas were on target for
Porthcawl, while Richard Jones, Josh Nash and Adrian

From
the Nou Camp in Barcelona to Richmond Park |
|
FROM
the Nou Camp in Barcelona to Richmond Park in
Carmarthen - tomorrow night marks an extraordinary
12-month turnaround in the career of Swansea City
defender Steven Watt.
Just
under a year ago Watt found himself running out of the
Nou Camp tunnel next to 2004 world player of the year
Ronaldinho as he warmed up ahead of Chelsea's
Champions' League clash against the Primera Liga
giants.
Tomorrow
the setting - and the prize at stake - is a little
different as Watt prepares for an appearance at
Carmarthen's comparatively humble Richmond Park home
as Swansea take on the Welsh Premier outfit for a
place in the FAW Premier Cup final.
Oh,
and this time there will be a maximum of 3,000 people
inside the ground - a far cry from the 89,000
spectators who witnessed Chelsea's visit to one of the
world's grandest football venues 12 months ago.
At
least this time Watt, who left Stamford Bridge to join
the Swans last month, should have some kind of role to
play.

Swans
cup clash tops the lot |
Carmarthen
Town boss Mark Jones is billing tomorrow night's visit
of Swansea City as the ''biggest game'' of their
season.
Despite
playing FC Copenhagen in the Uefa Cup back in August,
Jones believes that the FAW Premier Cup semi-final
tops the lot. ''The Uefa Cup matches were big, but we
are playing this game at our place and how close we
are to Swansea means this is the biggest game of the
season,'' said Jones.
''We are really looking forward to it. It is a massive
game for us.''
Carmarthen shocked Cardiff in the last round coming
from a goal behind to beat the Bluebirds 2-1.
Despite this, Jones is keeping his feet firmly on the
ground and is not predicting another upset.
''There is a chance - everybody has a chance. But I
don't care what anybody says Swansea are red hot
favourites,'' Jones said.
''Some people say that Cardiff didn't give us enough
respect in the last round, but they still brought down
15 professionals and six of them were in the first
team.
''Swansea will bring down 15 professionals. Sometimes
it can be worse playing against the fringe players
because they are trying even harder to impress.
''Swansea know all about us. They have our old 'keeper
Tony Pennock on their coaching staff and Colin Pascoe
(first team coach) is a good friend of mine.''
The winners of tonight's clash will meet Wrexham in
the final.

Lucas
Cazorla baffled at sacking |
|
The talk
at Stebonheath after the TNS cup victory was about the
sacking of Spanish director of football Lucas Cazorla
Luque who made a defiant appearance at the ground.
He
hugged coach Peter Nicholas and his former players
after the match. And it was ironic that his final
programme notes said, "I'd like to thank all the
fans of the Reds for their support, to the management
for their confidence in me, to all the players
..."
Luque
said after the match, "I don't know what's
happened. I have been happy at Llanelli and worked
hard to bring success. It is a mystery. The talking
will now be done by my lawyers."
This
statement was at odds with Llanelli's view that the
parting was by mutual consent and caused by
'"irreconcilable differences over future
strategy'.
Nicholas
added, "I don't know what's happened, but I was
asked to take charge and after much thought I decided
to take it on.

cup reports |

Prestatyn
1-2 Carmarthen
CARMARTHEN
TOWN squeezed through on penalties at Gresford last
season and were given another major scare by Prestatyn
who nearly forced extra-time in the last five minutes.
Visitors
keeper Andrew Delve twice blocked goal bound efforts
and Jack Lewis rattled the Carmarthen bar with a
superb left-foot curling free-kick.
Mark
Dodds put the South Wales side ahead in the 30th
minute with a magnificent header but Neil Gibson (70)
levelled.
Three
minutes later, however, Neil Smothers settled the tie
with a crisp, deflected 15-yard drive.
"We
expected a tough battle and that's what we got,"
said Carmarthen boss Mark Jones. "The last few
minutes were frantic.
"But,
earlier, we looked comfortable but then gave away a
bad goal and that put pressure on us. I'm just
delighted we're in the hat for the next round."
Pontypridd
0-5 Goytre
THE
accolade of the last Welsh League representative in
the quarter-finals of the Welsh Cup went to Goytre,
who brushed aside their ambitious hosts with
surprising ease.
Having
conceded just eight goals in 18 league matches,
Pontypridd's usually water tight defence leaked a
torrent of goals once Paul Lenehan (43) had put Goytre
in front.
Paul
Wiseman ensured a smooth transition after the break,
with the second, and a further brace from Ryan Penny
and another net-finder from Darren Lyons added to the
hosts disappointment.
"We
are chuffed to represent the Welsh League in the last
eight," said visitors' assistant manager Andrew
Radford. "Once we scored the first we always
looked winners.
"And
the win was achieved without three key players."
Cefn
Druids 3-5 Rhyl
RHYL
manager John Hulse was remarkably calm after this
eight-goal thriller, especially as his side were
trailing 3-2 with just 23 minutes remaining.
"The
scoreline does not tell the whole story as I felt we
were better than the result suggests, although at 3-2
I felt it might be one of those days," Hulse
said.
"We
pressed the destruction button to find ourselves in
that position, but despite them giving us a hell of a
battle, we've won through."
Druids
went in front in the 11th minute through a Darren
Williams header before Andy Moran's double, either
side of the break, seemed to have put the Lilywhites
in the driving seat.
But
a frantic, six-goal second half saw Mike Heverin
restore the hosts' lead with a quick-fire brace,
before Moran's hat-trick and goals by Greg Stones and
Lee Hunt settled the issue.
Cwmbran
1-3 Port Talbot
CWMBRAN'S
rebuilt side was decimated by injuries, suspensions
and cup-tied players so it was probably a relief to
manager Sean Wharton that the incomers dug deep.
So
much so, that it was not until the 85th minute that
Rhys Griffiths fired home his second to put the
visitors into the comfort zone with a place in the
quarter-finals.
Earlier,
Griffiths had opened the scoring in the ninth minute
with a neat header and influential Lee John made it
2-0 with a brilliant volley. Kristian Hanbury (67)
replied from the spot.
"We
were more like our normal selves today after a bad
run, but we are still not quite at full
throttle," said Port Talbot boss Wayne Davies.
"The
return of Lee John from injury was a massive boost for
us as he makes us tick. I never felt uncomfortable
about the outcome throughout."
Caersws
1-3 Llangefni
TWO
goals in the final 11 minutes earned Cymru Alliance
promotion hopefuls Llangefni Town a famous Welsh Cup
scalp at the Recreation Ground.
And
it was a well deserved success for the visitors who
looked the more hungry for success against a lethargic
Caersws who are slipping back into a trough of bad
form.
Darren
Thomas and John Rowley fired early warning shots
across Caersws' bow before the Bluebirds went in front
through Chris Venables in the 35th minute.
But
this seemed to inspire the visitors who levelled after
Thomas' pin-point supply put in Gerallt Jones four
minutes later.
It
came as no surprise to the meagre crowd when the
Anglesey visitors went ahead with 11 minutes
remaining, Craig Hogg heading home superbly and Thomas
put the icing on the cake with seven minutes left.
Caernarfon
4-0 Bala
LEAGUE
form indicated a difficult game for Caernarfon, but
Bala failed to sparkle and the Canaries moved into the
last eight.
Two
goals in as many minutes mid-way through the first
period rocked the visitors, Dylan Owen slotting home
the opener and Steve Watkins adding the second with a
neat chip.
Jim
McNulty's 48th-minute free-kick was touched in by Carl
Furlong and Jason Sadler after 78 minutes completed
the scoring to emphasise the Canaries superiority.
Under-pressure
Caernarfon manager Wayne Phillips was delighted with
the clear-cut win.
"Once
we got the first goal we always looked
comfortable," he said.
"I
just hope we can take this improvement into the league
and we will if the players continue to work hard and
do the right things."
Bangor
City 2-1 Newtown
BANGOR
City made hard work of their passage into the
quarter-finals of the Welsh Cup against a Newtown side
who are going through a miserable sequence of losses.
Hosts
player-manager Clayton Blackmore acknowledged the
scoreline was too close for comfort.
He
said, "At 2-1 you are always in danger of
conceding an equaliser.
"But
I was unhappy about their penalty as I thought the
handball decision was harsh, while we had clear-cut
penalty claims turned down."
The
Robins took a shock lead on the half-hour mark when
Danny Barton fired home the spot-kick before skipper
Paul O'Neill (38) levelled with a fine header.
But
it was not until 15 minutes from time that the
Citizens went in front, Martin Beattie's cross finding
the head of Carl Lamb who finished off impressively.

Lucas
Cazorla quits Llanelli |
|
Llanelli
AFC regrets to announce that the manager, Lucas
Cazorla has left the club by mutual consent owing to
irreconcilable differences over future strategy. The
Board believed that these differences could have been
resolved amicably at the end of the season, but the
situation became such that it was no longer possible.
The Board stresses the need for continuity and
consistency in management strategy and will continue
to execute its plan for the Club. The Board would like
to thank Lucas for his contribution and for making the
team a competitive force in the League. Peter Nicholas
will take charge until the end of the season. Llanelli
AFC remains committed to its professional status and
has continued to invest heavily on and off the pitch.
A
number of new signings have been made to strengthen
and deepen the squad as the team aims for the highest
finish in the Club's history. In particular the Club
is pleased to announce the arrival of Gary Lloyd from Carmarthen
Town. Gary is from Llanelli, so its good to see local
talent coming back to the Club. This signing is in
addition to Neil Thomas, Kaid Mohammed and Cortez
Belle. The Club has now won seven games in a row, a
Club record. Despite the departure of Lucas, the Board
believes it is business as usual. Confidence in the
Club is at an all time high which will serve the team
well in the coming weeks.

WELSH
Premier secretary John Deakin is hoping that
spectators will be the winners as clubs in the
division move forward with various promotions and
ground improvements.
Last
weekend both TNS and Welshpool attracted bumper gates
after implementing schemes to attract more fans.
A
season-high crowd for the league of 823 saw Saints

Welshpool

Nomads
Home help |
|
CONNAH'S
Quay Nomads will be offered the use of Flint Town
United's ground next season after they were told to
find a temporary home.
That's
according to Flint chairman Allan Baines, who says he
would have no hesitation in sharing Cae Y Castell with
their neighbours.
Nomads
were stunned to discover that work to revamp the pitch
at their Deeside Stadium - to begin in June - could
take up to 12 months.
If
it takes a year, that would rule out the possibility
of them holding any Welsh Premier League matches in
2006-07.
At
best, the newly-laid pitch could be ready by January
of next year. But that still requires Nomads to find a
'home' for the start of the new campaign - and quick.
Rules
state that any club playing in the top-flight who want
to ground-share must have an agreement in place by
March 1 - and that's where the Silkmen come in.

Ambitious
Pontypridd Town face one of their biggest tests of the
season this Saturday when Macron Welsh League Division
One club Goytre United travel to the Ynysangharad Park
ground (1.30pm).
Both
clubs are chasing Macron League honours with Goytre
handily placed to launch a challenge on leaders Neath

Cwmbran
lurching from one crisis to another |
|
CASH-STRAPPED
Cwmbran Town are stumbling from one crisis to another
and face the very real possibility of plunging out of
the Welsh Premier League.
Recently
they were fined £2,000 - half of it suspended -
following incidents during an FAW Premier Cup tie
against Merthyr Tydfil and now they have been charged
with fielding two ineligible players.
Football
Association of Wales chiefs claim that Michael Binning
and Nicky Ward have signed for more than two Saturday
sides.
Under
FAW rules players may sign for up to two teams but it
is alleged that Ward signed for four clubs and Binning
three.
If
found guilty Cwmbran could have points deducted and,
with them only a couple of places above the relegation
zone, any deduction would be likely to bring to an end
their Welsh Premier status.
The
club have asked for a personal hearing and they are
likely to argue that the multiple registration should
have been noticed at the time.

Jones:
"we don't fear Swans" |
|
Carmarthen
Town boss Mark Jones says the Richmond Park outfit
will be going all out to beat Swansea City in next
week's FAW Premier Cup tie.
Having
secured a famous win over Championship side Cardiff
city in the quarter-final of the FAW Premier Cup
Carmarthen Town have drawn League One outfit and near
neighbours Swansea City in the semi-final stage of the
prestigious competition at Richmond Park.
Town manager Mark Jones hailed the cup tie as
"the biggest game ever played at Richmond
Park."
He added: "There's so much resting on the match,
although we will be massive underdogs we will be
giving it a real go.
"Whichever 15 players Jacket brings down at the
end of the day they are professional players.
"There will be no change in the way we play as
ploughing players behind the ball is not our style. It
will be a brilliant day for the club," said
Jones.
Broadcast live on BBC 2 Wales it is a wonderful draw
for the club as it sets up a fantastic local derby
that is sure to fill Richmond Park to the rafters.
Lying in wait for the League One side will be a side
that is confident it can do well against the
professionals and will be relishing the opportunity to
compete for a place in the prestigious final.
Carmarthen Town secretary Gareth O Jones said: "
Town has always performed well against the
professional sides in the competition and once again
its going to be a great occasion and we want to fill
Richmond and give the team the support they deserve.
"We expect the Swans to bring a strong squad and
Mark Jones and his team are certainly up for the
challenge following their excellent showing against
Cardiff City.
"Significantly there are currently three former
Welsh Premier League players - Lee Trundle, Owen Tudur
Jones and Adebayo Akinfenwa, now making a name for
themselves in Swansea City colours which will give
added interest to this very attractive fixture."

pedigree makes it highly likely that he has made the
Board’s list of targets for interview.
The
ex-international made around 400 appearances, scoring
exactly 100 League goals, in a glittering career that
started at Nottingham Forest before taking in spells
at Manchester United, Sunderland and Middlesbrough.
He
earned one England cap, coming on as a substitute
against the Republic of Ireland in a friendly in 1985
— injury ruling out his chances of going to the
Mexico ‘86 World Cup.
The
44-year-old is keen to return to management in England
after four-years in charge of Bangor City in the Welsh
Premiership.
He
also had a year in charge of Macclesfield Town in the
Football League in 2000.
His
spell at Bangor saw the North Wales club qualify for
Europe three times, frequently finishing as the
highest-ranked part-time team in the table.

Ruscoe
reflects on defeat in shootout |
|
TNS
midfielder Scott Ruscoe spoke of the club’s
disappointment at missing out on a place in the final
of the FAW Premier Cup following last night’s
penalty shootout thriller at Wrexham.
The
Welsh Premier leaders had looked well placed to
overcome their League Two hosts, having twice led in
normal time only to be pegged back as Juan Ugarte
grabbed a last minute leveller.
There
remained little to separate the sides in the extra
period as Steve Evans’s opportunist 40-yard lob left
the scores at 3-3 to set up the penalty decider.
The
Saints twice had chances to have wrapped up the
shootout, but Chris King fired his penalty over and
Michael Jackson saw his effort brilliantly saved by
keeper Michael Ingham.
And
Wrexham took advantage to edge through when Ingham
held onto a spot kick from opposite number Gerard
Doherty who had earlier saved four penalties to keep
his side in the hunt.
Ruscoe,
who had opened the scoring in last night’s
semi-final, admitted the defeat was a bitter blow
having suffered similar penalty misery against Swansea
City last year.
“When
we went 2-1 up with just a few minutes we thought this
could be our year but again we ran out of luck,” he
said.
“We
stuck at it really well, but when it comes down to
penalties it’s luck of the draw. Everyone’s gutted
because we really believed we could do it.”
