Ebay
investigates TNS sponsorship bid
|
ONLINE
auction house eBay is investigating after the business partner of TNS
boss Mike Harris is believed to have made a £200,000 bid for
sponsorship of the club.
The
name of the Welsh Premier League side is up for sale on the auction site
and last night the top bid of £250,000 was made by a bidder identified
as "gilfachg".
But
the third largest bid of £200,000 was made by a website called
txtchix.com, understood to be run by Mike Harris's business partner
Nicholas Maguire.
Mr
Maguire and Mr Harris are both listed by Companies House as directors of
the firm Icommunicate.
The
bid boosted the price that other bidders had to offer during the ongoing
eBay auction.
But Mr Harris insisted
there was nothing improper about one of his business partners bidding
to re-name his football club.
Mr
Maguire echoed his partner's sentiments, saying his eBay bid was being
mounted through txtchix.com, a separate company unconnected to Mr
Harris.
Txtchix.com
is a website designed to appeal to women who enjoy using mobile phones
and texting.
Mr
Maguire said, "I am involved with Mike in Icommunicate, but it
has nothing to do with Icommunicate. I'm involved with a number of
businesses.
"Txtchix.com
is a new entity and it's that new entity that has bid.
"Mike
is not involved with that new entity."
Mr
Harris said he had employed a PR company to handle the sale of the TNS
name and whoever emerged as the successful bidder would have to come
up with the cash - whether or not they have any connections to him.
He
said, "If he (Mr Maguire) decides to make a bid, which he seems
to have done, the same mechanism will be used. If I thought he was
doing something that was not correct I would be onto it like a
shot."
But
eBay confirmed it is investigating the links between Mr Maguire and Mr
Harris and the bid being made through txtchix.com. A spokesman said,
"We are looking into the matter and we cannot comment any further
at this stage."

Steelmen go
for inaugural glory
|
Port
Talbot seek their first major Welsh Premier trophy when they meet
champions TNS in the Loosemores Challenge Cup final at Park Avenue,
Aberystwyth on Sunday. A magnificent season for the Steelmen warrants a
perfect finish but manager Wayne Davies knows his side are in for a
testing afternoon against Ken McKenna's all conquering side.
A
disappointing 3-0 defeat at Rhyl on Tuesday night has all but
extinguished Port Talbot's European hopes and the hectic end-of-season
schedule has proved too much for Davies's small squad.
The last three league games yielded just two points but the Remax
Stadium fans will be hoping their side have one more big match in them.
"For virtually the only time this season the players came off the
field at Rhyl saying they had been on the wrong end of a mauling,"
Davies said.
"We never looked like competing and we had to hold up our hands and
admit they were far too good for us.
"The difference was they have a much bigger squad and were able to
bring in fresh legs while we are struggling for numbers."
Davies's worries are increased by the fact that goalkeeper Neil Davies
and play-maker Lee John are both cup tied while Luke Bowen is on Welsh
semi-pro international duty.
And, to add to Port Talbot's woes, Dean Johnston will miss the clash
through injury, a huge blow as Davies admitted.
"Dean is so important to the team as is Lee John so it's a cruel
blow to have both of them missing.
"We are massive underdogs going into the match," Davies said.
"TNS are a great side who have had a tremendous season but as I
have said before on our day we are a match for any team."
One factor in Port Talbot's favour is TNS surprise 2-0 loss at
Aberystwyth on Tuesday night - only their second defeat in the league
this season.
And Davies will be hoping Rhys Griffiths takes his shooting boots to
Ceredigion as the striker topped the Welsh Premier scoring charts with
28 goals, two ahead of TNS's Marc Lloyd-Williams.
To reach the final Port Talbot have beaten Carmarthen Town, Cwmbran Town
and Llanelli while TNS have had the easier passage disposing of
Welshpool Town, Newtown and Airbus UK.

Goytre turn
up pressure
|
Goytre
United will be looking to get to within a point of long-time Macron
Welsh League leaders Neath Athletic when they challenge Bryntirion at
Glenhafod Park tomorrow.
A
2-0 midweek victory over Bettws further encouraged the Port Talbot side,
who are looking to close out the championship with victories over
Bryntirion and in the big one at home against Neath a week tomorrow. A
first goal of the season from Thomas Meiring sent Goytre ahead in the
17th minute, but Bettws battled hard and gave them some anxious moments.
And it wasn't until the 86th minute that Darren Lyons sealed victory
with an 18th goal of the season - and a 100th team goal in all
competitions.
Neath remain on the sidelines until their final outing at Goytre

Cwmbran U21
beat Rhayader
|
Cwmbran Town under 21 side
played and beat Rhayader last night (Apr 27th) to take a 4 point lead in
the under 21 league.
They have one remaining
fixture which is at home to Llanelli, and if they win that game they
will finish top of the South section, but they may not even have to win
that game to top the division as it is subject of a League of Wales
hearing on whether the game will go ahead as Llanelli broke the fixture
at the last minute on the original fixture date.
Our next game was due
to be played last night as well, but Carmarthen called off as they could
not raise a team.

Llanelli
to discuss future plans
The board
of directors at Stebonheath Park will sit down next month and pan out
the future of Llanelli FC.
Top
of the list come factors such as:
Plans to redevelop Stebo.
New manager for next season.
Additions to playing staff.
The meeting aims to continue the club's remarkable rise from basement
battlers to title contenders in just 12 months.
All of this, of course, has coincided with the takeover of majority
shareholders Jesco Group.
They have invested hundreds of thousands of pounds in the club that has
turned professional and redeveloped its social club into one of the best
in the league. The players have exceeded expectations on the pitch by
finishing second and securing Uefa Cup football for the first time in
the club's history.
Jesco's Nitin Parekh is also keen to praise the club's off-pitch staff.
"It's nice to know our strategy is working," he said.
"The club is moving in the right direction because everyone is on
the same wavelength. The players have been terrific but there are many
unsung heroes who have worked very hard off the pitch. General manager
Karolina Stasaityte is one of those, as are fixture secretary Nigel
Evans, commercial manager Vic Gomersall, programme editor Hugh Roberts
and Anthony and Leslie Rees in the social club. Then there is the
supporters club. Paul Stephens and the lads have been behind us all the
way and we are very thankful for that."
With plans to stage Uefa Cup football at Stebo folding, the club is
still in negotiations with other venues - including Stradey Park - as
possible options. Whether or not Peter Nicholas will stay be in charge
next season will also be on the agenda at the meeting. He took over from
Spaniard Lucas Cazorla after he left his post in February.
Then there is the question of whether the squad will be improved for
next season's adventures.
"All these points will be raised at the meeting," said Parekh.
"It's important to progress. We're mindful Rome wasn't built in a
day but everyone has done their damndest to do it."

Goytre United moved a step closer to the welsh league title and a move up
to the welsh premier league. Last night the defeated Bettws 2-0 at
Glenhafod Park to move within 4 points of long time table toppers Neath
Ath.
Goytre's fate now lies in their own hands as they have 3 games in hand

TNS
owner linked with Wrexham bid
|
TNS
boss Mike Harris could make an 11th hour bid to snap up Wrexham Football
Club from under the nose of fans' favourite Neville Dickens.
On
the eve of the deadline for Dickens to conclude his deal to buy the club
Harris told the Western Mail he could "never say never" about
a move for the Red Dragons.
Under
the terms of an "exclusivity deal" reached with the
administrators, former Wrexham director Dickens has sole rights to
negotiate for the cash-strapped club, whose debts run to around £4.5m.
But
this expires on Sunday and Harris' refusal to rule himself out of the
running will fuel fears Dickens could end up in a bidding war with the
TNS managing director.
Asked
whether he was interested in buying the Dragons, Harris said, "You
can never say never.
I was
interested in looking at it a couple of years ago when Pryce was there.
My priority now is to ensure that the football club I'm the managing
director of is ready for the Champions League."
But a
source told the Western Mail Harris was interested in moving for the
Dragons because buying the Racecourse club would ultimately prove more
economical than financing his long-term plans for TNS.
These
involve moving the Llansantffraid-based club to a newly-built stadium in
Oswestry.
The
League Two club's joint administrator Dave Acland said that under the
terms of his exclusivity deal with Wrexham car dealer Dickens, he was
unable to comment on other possible suitors for the Dragons.
He
said, "Even if I knew the answer I couldn't say because it goes
against the exclusivity deal."

Welsh
champions auction club name
|
Welsh
Premier League champions Total Network Solutions FC are holding an
internet auction to find a new sponsor.
The
Llansantffraid-based club have been looking for a sponsor to buy the
club's name for next season since TNS was acquired by British Telecom in
October.
The club attracted
extensive coverage last season when they played Liverpool in a Champions
League qualifier.
"We know the sky
is the limit for any new sponsor," said TNS FC general manager Ian
Williams.
"The great thing
about eBay is it allows every company out there access to purchase such
a powerful branding tool and reap the same rewards TNS has seen over the
years.
"The club has a
great success story."
TNS FC won the Welsh
Premier title for the second successive season two weeks ago,
guaranteeing their place in the Champions League qualifiers for another
season.
TNS founder Mike Harris
said his company had benefited immeasurably from sponsoring the club
since 1997.
"This is a
fantastic opportunity for a company to raise their profile, increase
brand recognition and gain market share in the chosen sector," said
Harris.
"It worked like a
charm for me."

Rhyl
end Port Talbot's Euro dream
|
PORT
TALBOT'S dream of European football ended at Belle Vue last night when
they were beaten 3-0 by Rhyl.
A
hectic schedule of five matches in 11 days has proved too great a hurdle
for the Blues who have the consolation of a League Cup final against TNS
on Sunday.
And a
further bonus for the Remax Stadium club is the magnificent achievement
of striker Rhys Griffiths whose 28 league goals has earned him the
golden boot award.
Gary
Powell put the Lilywhites ahead in the 26th minute when a scramble in
the visitors's box ended with the midfielder heading in the opener.
Rhyl
inflicted the killer blow a minute into the second period, Chris Adamson
hitting the target and Chris Sharp added the third midway through the
second half.
Carmarthen
Town will now qualify for a an Intertoto Cup place if Rhyl defeat Bangor

Cash-strapped
Barry make plea to avoid footballing extinction
|
Barry
Town FC, once the most powerful club in Welsh football, could fold
within a few weeks, writes Terry Phillips.
And
secretary Dave Cole has pleaded with Vale of Glamorgan Council, saying:
'Please save my club.'
Barry
Island-born Cole fears the Dragons, who won every major domestic honour
in Wales and recorded several notable results in Europe, are facing
oblivion.
A row
over £33,000 in unpaid rent at Jenner Park means Barry Town cannot play
at any Vale of Glamorgan Council run stadium.
Their
junior development programme is on hold and Barry's Macron Welsh League
team have to play 20 miles away at AFC Treforest, Pontypridd.
Now,
though, owner Stuart Lovering and Cole have come up with a plan to save
Barry Town.
'We
still believe the level of rent was too high, but we have written to the
Council offering to pay it off,' said Cole.
'Now
it's down to the council.
'They
can still save Barry Town and the debt will be paid off.
'But
we need an answer quickly if we are to apply to play in the Welsh League
next season.'
The
problem for Barry surrounds the £42,000 in rent levied by Vale of
Glamorgan Council, which the club believe is remarkably high for the
Welsh League.
Barry
still owe £33,000, but Lovering, who has control of the football and
social clubs at Jenner Park, has outlined his plan to return to the town
for 2006-2007.
He is
asking for a 25-year lease at Jenner Park which includes an annual
payment for using the stadium, plus a further amount to gradually pay
off the debt.

Cwmbran
manager say "team unwanted"
|
CWMBRAN Town boss Sean
Wharton has slammed the town's community for allowing the club to slide
from challenging in Europe to being Welsh football also-rans.
Saturday's defeat by
NEWI Cefn Druids in the Welsh Premier League all but condemned the
Crows, the inaugural winners of the competition, to relegation.
And Crows legend
Wharton revealed the extent of the dramatic fall from grace when he
admitted the players and coaching staff are having to chip in to cover
the cost of travelling to matches - all this at a club that once took on
the likes of Celtic and Maccabi Haifa in Europe.
He said: "I read
in the Argus that Newport County fans had paid for their players to stay
in a hotel ahead of a game, well we have to chip in for a mini-bus to
get to where we are playing.
"You look at the
clubs and I honestly believe we are not miles apart in terms of playing
ability but we need the community to be an active part of the club.
"You need people
to take the club seriously and be involved and proactive. We have had so
little support it makes you ask the question of whether Cwmbran cares
about its football club.
"I live in the
area and nobody seems to care enough. I have never known a club where
people who say they care are happy to see us lose.
"If the club is to
survive that has to be addressed. On the playing side we can start
moving forward but it has to be encompass the community - I want
everybody to be singing from the same hymn sheet."
Wharton's call to arms
echoes that of former Crows boss Brian Coyne who said when departing his
post in October that supporter apathy could drive the club out of
business and that there were only 12 regular fans at the club.
But while Wharton is
disheartened with matters off the pitch he has been delighted with the
efforts of his inexperienced side in the battle against the drop and
would happily head into another campaign with the same squad.
He said: "Don't
look at Saturday as the reason why we are going down, look at other
games in the season like Welshpool and Caernarfon - it was those games
that got us into this situation.
"We actually put
in a great run towards the end of the season and I can't fault the
players - everybody gave everything they have got. Those that came in
have done really well and I'm sure there will be a few clubs interested
in them.
"I want to stay
and I want to get the team back to where they belong but we need support
and we need help. People and businesses in the town have let the club
slip away, and the community needs to get behind Cwmbran Town and the
players.
"We had a crucial
midweek home game against Porthmadog and their fans outnumbered ours. We
need more help and support.
"To be honest I
don't know what the future holds. I need to speak to the secretary,
chairman and players but as long as they want me to stay, I will ."

County given
cup axe
|
NEWPORT County have been
fined £500, ordered to pay £130 costs and thrown out of the Gwent
Senior Cup by the Gwent County Football Association.
It follows their
failure to fulfil their semi-final fixture with Macron Welsh League
Division Two side Croesyceiliog on Thursday, April 6.
They called the game
off at 48 hours notice claiming they could not raise a side because of
injuries and clashes with other games, including an important Conference
South fixture against Hayes a night earlier.
Croesyceiliog were
upset as they had made all the arrangements for the game and claimed the
cancellation would hit them financially.
Croesyceiliog will now
meet Cwmbran Town in the final, the game provisionally set for May 14.
Gwent County FA
secretary Terry Harris said: "Newport County did not ask for a
personal hearing and after considering the evidence presented by both
clubs we found the case against them breaking the fixture proved."
The County have ten
days from last Friday in which to appeal, but spokesman Colin Everett
said it was unlikely they would do so.
"We did say in our
written response to the Gwent FA that we would respect their decision
and accept it with good grace and it's unlikely we'll appeal, though we
only had written notice on Friday and as a board we have yet to discuss
it.
"We do want to
participate fully, as normal, in the competition next year."
Croesyceiliog manager
Chris Evans commented: "We would not have wanted to go through to
the final like this. We would rather Newport County had honoured the
game."

The league's top two
sides, TNS and Llanelli, battled each other to a 0-0 stalemate at
Treflan.
TNS have already
secured the title, but the result means Llanelli must wait to guarantee
second spot and the resultant Uefa Cup place.
Lee Hunt gave Rhyl a
first-half lead at Carmarthen, but Danny Thomas' 85th-minute equaliser
means the Lilywhites have yet to guarantee a European spot.
Rhys Griffiths
cancelled out Gerard Maloney's early strike to give Port Talbot a 1-1
home draw with Caernarfon.
First-half goals from
Jason Sadler and Les Davies saw Porthmadog to a 2-0 home triumph over
Welshpool, who are chasing an Intertoto Cup place.
Second-half goals from
Paul Mazzarella and Matthew Cook gave Newi Cefn Druids a vital 2-1
comeback win in what many have seen as a relegation decider at Cwmbran.
Phil Molyneux's goal on
the stroke of half-time gave strugglers Connah's Quay a win at
already-relegated Cardiff Grange Quins that leaves the Nomads safe from
the threat of relegation.
A 37th-minute Gareth
Watkins goal saw Aberystwyth to a 1-0 win at Airbus UK, who continue to
sweat near the bottom of the league.
Gareth Hughes' late
strike eased Newtown's relegation fears, giving them a fine 1-0 win at

Haverfordwest
win under 19 cup
|
The
under 19 MacWhirter cup was played yesterday at Glenhafod Park (Goytre)
between Haverfordwest County and Cambrian & Clydach, the game went
to extra time before Jack Christopher of Haverfordwest scored the games
only goal.
The
sides were fairly evenly matched and both created chances, but Haverfordwest's
goalkeeper Jordan Aspinall had a superb game and deservedly won the
man-of-the-match award. At the other end, Haverfordwest's
skipper Christopher and his fellow striker Steve McNabney kept the
pressure on the Rhondda side, and apart from a 20-minute spell during
the second half of normal time, when Cambrian were pushing forward, the Haverfordwest
always looked likely winners.
During
normal time Haverfordwest's
Christopher hammered one shot against the Cambrian keeper’s bar, and
followed this in extra time with a rasping shot against the post. But
the deserved winner finally came at the very end when Christopher
slotted in his 28th goal in 18 games.
Also
yesterday West End became Youth division west champions by beating
closest rivals Briton Ferry 2-1, they did it in style having two games
left to play and also had a point deducted by the league.

Title hopes
still alive for Neath
|
NEATH,
after a couple of hiccups, kept alive their Welsh League Championship
hopes when they carved out a 2-1 victory at Bryntirion Athletic
yesterday.
Neil
Hancock and ace striker Carl Shaw were on target for the Llandarcy-based
side while Andrew Lyddon netted for Bryntirion, who have weakened
disappointingly over the past few weeks.
Although
Neath are in pole position with points in the bag, Goytre, their nearest
rivals, have games in hand and harbour hopes of pipping their
adversaries at the post.
Yesterday
Goytre were truly on song as they overwhelmed reigning titleholders Ton
Pentre 4-0. Ryan Penny set the ball rolling after 17 minutes and the
experienced Kevin Bartley doubled the advantage from the penalty spot
five minutes before the break.
After
the interval Richard Ryan and Darren Lyons made the game safe with
splendid strikes.
Following
a good run Maesteg Park have rather stumbled and they were disappointed
to go down 2-1 at Dinas Powys.
Pontardawe
travelled to the Cynon Valley to take on Llwydcoed and recovered from a
1-0 deficit to triumph 2-1, courtesy of goals by Carl Mainwaring and
Jamie Bowen.
It
was a result that virtually condemns Llwydcoed to Second Division
football next season.
But
a Keith Phillips goal was sufficient to give Briton Ferry a crucial 1-0
victory at Taffs Well, a result which keeps alive their hopes of staying
in the top flight.
Elsewhere,
goals by Darren Porretta from the penalty spot and Dean Goddard gave
Newport YMCA a 2-0 victory over Ely Rangers, and goals by Sam Small and
Robert Latchford took UWIC to victory by the same margin over Barry
Town.

Chris gets
the Pontypridd party started
|
CHAMPAGNE
was flowing at Ynysangharad Park last night after Pontypridd Town
finally secured promotion to the First Division of the Welsh League with
a convincing 4-1 victory over Cardiff Corries.
"Now
we're going all out for the championship - and hope to go through the
season unbeaten," said Ponty official Clive Harrhy.
The
much-travelled Chris Summers led the way for Ponty with two splendid
goals, while Mike Jones and Andrew Hughes were also on target.
Two
goals in the last 10 minutes gave Garw victory at Caerau Ely to keep
alive their hopes of going up, and ENTO Aberaman will also be in the
shake-up despite dropping two points in a 1-1 draw at Merthyr Saints.
Garden
Village travelled to Pontyclun and goals by Steven Evans and Ashley
Richards gave them a 2-1 victory.
At
the other end of the table, Porthcawl's Second Division existence is all
but over for the time being after they crashed to a 3-1 defeat at home
to Penrhiwceiber, for whom Andrew Workman scored a brace. Richard Veale
was also on target.
Gwynfi,
who have long since resigned themselves to relegation, crashed to a 5-2
home thrashing by Croesyceiliog.
Newcastle
Emlyn stayed at the head of affairs in Division Three with a 3-2 win at
Goytre, while Swansea-based West End, whose cup involvement means they
have suffered a fixture congestion, continued their good run with a 3-1
home victory over Risca. Carl Smitham scored twice and Chris Hall was
also on target.

Goytre
get a lift with key players set for return

Title-seeking
Goytre United hope to have three key players back for tomorrow's first
division match with Ton Pentre at Glenhafod Park.
Having gained a 2-1 home win in midweek over Ely
Rangers with five key players out, the Port Talbot village side are
hopeful that Kevin Davies, Ryan Penny and Richard Ryan will all return.
But still ruled out is midfield player Leigh Shrimpton along with
centre-back Steve Healy, who is on honeymoon.
Leaders
Neath Athletic have a difficult assignment at Bryntirion Athletic.
The Bridgend side have found form of late on the back of nine goals from
ex-Porthcawl Town player Marc McKee.
Pontardawe Town travel to AFC Llwydcoed, and could have four players
out.
Ryan Fahey picked up a facial wound in the 4-1 home win over Ton Pentre
in midweek, while Simon Davies is carrying an ankle problem and Steve
Cox a hamstring injury.
Defender Ian Morgan starts a two-match ban, but Paul Davey is back on
the scene.

avoid relegation, but managers Paul Barrow and Richard Gay have a fit

game in hand. But a win for Mark Jones's side would reduce the deficit
to a single point, with Carmarthen's final match at home to Connah's
Quay next week while Rhyl face difficult matches against Port Talbot and
Llanelli.
Jones said: ''I've been saying we are capable of stringing a good
sequence of results together and we have.
''But this is the big one and it's a game we cannot afford to lose if we
wish to finish in the top four.''
Carmarthen will almost certainly start tomorrow's match without Nathan
Cotterrall and Martyn Giles, who are both unlikely to recover from
injuries - a blow Jones was quick to acknowledge.
''Both have been magnificent for us this season, but we've had to cope
without them for the last few matches and the players who have come in
have done a great job,'' he added,

Welsh
premier to announce new partnership
|
The
Vauxhall Masterfit Welsh Premier League is pleased to announce a
new partnership agreement with sports marketing firm G2 Sports
Management Group to fast forward the commercial development of the
league from next season.
The
league which is approaching the climax of its fourteenth
successful season has made significant commercial strides in
recent years and current sponsors Vauxhall Masterfit has benefited
from increased media exposure, particularly in view of the
improvement in European competition from League winners TNS who
famously drew Liverpool in the Champions League in the summer of
2005, which was followed by the success of Carmarthen Town and
Rhyl in the preliminary rounds of the UEFA Cup.
The
partnership with G2 Sports Management Group will see the
development and implementation of a detailed commercial plan for
the league and its member clubs. The Cardiff based company will be
utilising its contacts and experience to widen the appeal of the
league to supporters, the media and new companies wishing to
become sponsors and benefit from an alliance with Wales’
flagship league.
John
Deakin, Head of Competition at the Football Association of Wales
said ‘The team at G2 Sports Management Group share our aims for
the development of the league and its member clubs. We feel that
this partnership is a positive development to enable the Welsh
Premier League to reach new supporters and new sponsors. The
competition is receiving more coverage in the media than ever
before, and innovative companies have the opportunity to engage
with communities across Wales and the United Kingdom.’
Geraint
Evans, senior partner at G2 Sports Management Group said ‘We are
delighted to be partnering with the Welsh Premier League and
adding to our portfolio of clients. We have a vast understanding
of football in Wales from grass roots level upwards. This
partnership will allow the league to communicate the passion and
emotion of Wales’ number one sport to current and new
supporters, and bring the league to the attention of sponsors who
can benefit from a competition with an unrivalled geographic
reach.’

TNS
eager for more glory
|
TOTAL
NETWORK SOLUTIONS' celebrations at clinching back-to-back Welsh Premier
titles will reach a crescendo on Saturday when they receive their trophy
at Treflan before playing Llanelli, the side now certain to finish
runners-up, writes Chris Smart.
A 3-1
Good Friday win at Caernarfon settled the title race and no one could
possibly begrudge TNS as they were beaten only once on their way to the
crown - by Carmarthen - and that reverse ended a 35-match unbeaten run.
Despite
their outstanding success, TNS are still hungry for more and determined
to improve.
"We
set high standards. In training every day we are on at the players and
we keep working at things and giving them targets. But they are all
aspiring to do better so it is just a matter of keeping them
hungry," said boss Ken McKenna.
And
Mike Harris, the money-man behind the amazing TNS story, is convinced
his side's future looks bright, particularly with the new facilities
across the border in Oswestry on track.
"The
new stadium will be ready to play in about three or four years time but
the first stage will start in June," he said.

I
truly hope Crows survive - Coyne
|
BRIAN Coyne, the former
Cwmbran Town manager, now in charge of Aberystwyth, would be delighted
if the Crows won their relegation scrap to maintain Welsh Premier League
status.
Coyne said: "I
speak to Sean quite regularly. We have always got on very well. The way
he has stuck with the club speaks volumes for him. I think a lot of
people would have walked away from the club by now.
"I think he has
done a fantastic job and I hope he can get out of trouble - I genuinely
hope he can get out of trouble for the effort he has put in. It is a
tough old game."
There is little doubt
that Cwmbran's fate will almost certainly be decided over Easter. The
Crows are at home to Bangor City on Monday and then meet Porthmadog on
Wednesday - a demanding programme.
And Wharton has made a
heartfelt plea to the community - come and support us in our hour of
need.
Over the weeks and
months there have been many such appeals but this really is Cwmbran's
hour of need.
Wharton, who lives in
the town, said: "I would love local people to turn out - especially
the sporting community - to give us support for the two home games on
Monday and Wednesday."

LEADERS Neath
Athletic revived their title hopes after a lean spell with a thumping
4-0 victory over struggling former champions Ton Pentre.
A brace from
striker Andy Hill spearheaded the home side's goal spree, with Ryan
Perry and Dale Gardner also on target.
In the Bridgend
derby, Bryntirion inflicted a third defeat in a week on neighbours
Bridgend Town.
Bryntirion ran
out worthy 3-1 winners with Andrew Lydden, John Fulton and Marc McGee
sending the visitors crashing.
Maesteg Park's
challenge at the top faltered as the students of UWIC snatched a 2-0
verdict at Tudor Park.
Pontardawe hit
the goal trail, crushing lowly Taffs Well 5-0 thanks to a brace from
Mark Dunford and a late hat-trick for Rob Foland within a spell of just
five minutes.
Ely Rangers
defeated Afan Lido, Daniel Hopper claiming the winner while goals from
Craig Jolliffe and a Chris Pearce penalty were enough to send bottom
club Llwydcoed slipping to another defeat.
Bettws eased
their relegation troubles with a 3-1 success over Dinas Powis.
Season-long
leaders Pontypridd Town took another stride towards scooping
the Division Two
title with a 2-0 defeat of close challengers Garw. The visitors strolled

Llanelli
to wrap up 2nd place and Euro spot
The Reds
can clinch the holy grail that is European football this weekend with a
win over Welshpool. The club is within sight of guaranteeing a spot in
Europe and with two home games on Monday and Wednesday night to follow,
the club could also secure second place.
That
would earn the club a place in the Uefa Cup, which could signal the
arrival of the continent's big teams at Stebo.
Fourth-placed Welshpool are Saturday's visitors to Stebo and manager
Peter Nicholas admits a win would send the club on its way.
"It's a very important game for us," he said. "If we win
that, it would be a huge step forward.
"I think if we win these three home games, that should be enough to
secure second place."

Crows bid to
beat old boss
|
CWMBRAN Town manager Sean
Wharton locks horns with his mentor, Brian Coyne, at Aberystwyth's Park
Avenue ground tomorrow afternoon (kick-off 2.30pm).
Coyne, the former Crows
boss, is now in charge of Aberystwyth, and Wharton said: "I have
the utmost respect for Brian. I served my managerial apprenticeship
under him. I speak to him every week."
Cwmbran, facing three
games in the space of six days, are unbeaten in their last six games -
and the form gives Wharton cause for optimism.
He said: "Six
weeks ago we didn't know where we were going to get our next point from.
We have come on massively since then and and I have already had players
saying they want to be part of the Cwmbran set-up next season.
"We're looking
forward to tomorrow's game, we've got a game plan and we will be looking
to do our best. I have a lot of confidence in the lads."
However, Cwmbran could
well face a last-game decider in the Welsh Premier League. The Crows
travel to NEWI Cefn Druids to complete this season's fixtures and the
Druids are two points ahead with a game in hand.

Llanelli can
help duo's Euro dreams
Carmarthen
Town and Port Talbot will be hoping Llanelli can ignite their European
hopes by beating Welshpool Town at Stebonheath Park tomorrow. If, as
looks likely, Rhyl finish third in the Welsh Premier and also win the
Welsh Cup, fourth spot would guarantee an Intertoto Cup place for the
side finishing immediately behind the Lilywhites.
With
a superb run of 13 points from their last five league matches Carmarthen
could be the side gathering momentum at the right time.
They lie fifth after a scintillating 6-0 victory at relegated Grange
Quins on Tuesday night and tomorrow face Porthmadog at Richmond Park.
It is a game they should win, before they turn their attentions to the
trip to struggling Newi Cefn Druids on Easter Monday - another winnable
encounter.
Carmarthen boss Mark Jones is asking his side for a full set of points
this weekend.
"We have to keep our run going as if we win all four remaining
matches I'm confident we will be playing in Europe again,'' Jones said.
The good omen for the Priory Street club is that Porthmadog have lost on
both their previous visits to Carmarthen while Druids have failed to
lower the Richmond Park club's colours in the last six clashes at
Plaskynaston.
Midfielder Nathan Cotterrall, in such inspirational form lately, is
Carmarthen's only doubt because of a thigh strain which resulted in him
having to leave the field at Grange Quins in the first minute.
Port Talbot are also engaged in a crucial double header this weekend,
travelling to strugglers Newtown tomorrow and Airbus UK on Monday.
Trailing Carmarthen by just one point but with a game in hand, six
points over Easter are vital.
The Remax Stadium club will be without Craig Hanford tomorrow, as he is
best man at a wedding, but he will return on Monday although Chris
Pridham misses both matches through suspension.
"We're still feeling the disappointment of last week's Welsh Cup
defeat to Rhyl, especially the manner in which we lost, but these
matches will help the players get it out of their system,'' said Town
boss Wayne Davies.
"Again there's no doubt if we're at our best we can achieve two
victories and I know my players will always give me 100 per cent.''

Looking good
for Goytre but not for Ferry
Goytre United took another
big step last night in their ambitions to join welsh domestics top
flight, they travelled to the Murchfield ground to face Dinas Powys and
maintained their impressive form with a 2-1 win.
Last night's win now moves them within 7 points of long time league
leaders Neath Ath, and they have 4 games in hand. They can even afford
the luxury of losing one of those 4 games and still go 2 points clear,
Neath have been slipping up badly of late and if Goytre hold their nerve
in the run in then Welsh premier soccer next season is theirs. A big
bearing on the final outcome will surely come on May 6th when Goytre
host Neath Ath at Glenhafod Park.
At the other end of the
table it is starting to look bleak for Briton Ferry they have just 3
games remaining and they are in the 3rd relegation spot, Tuesday night
they faced Bryntirion Ath and they came a cropper losing 5-0, that on
the back of a very good away win at Llandarcy Park against Neath Ath
winning 2-1.
Marc McKee proved to be the thorn in Ferry's side,
bagging four goals as the Bryntirion handed
Ferry their heaviest league defeat of the season. McKee volleyed
Bryntirion ahead in the 42nd minute, and doubled the lead early in the
second half.
McKee's
hat-trick strike arrived on 60 minutes while on 68 minutes Michael
Hartley was dragged down in the box.
McKee converted the penalty and they finished the scoring with a late
goal from Aussie player Jarra Macdonald-Funnell.
They face a real tough test tomorrow night when they host Goytre United,
their other remaining 2 games are against other teams battling to avoid
the drop, the play away to Taffs Well and their final game is at home to
Ely Rangers.

History will
be made in Caersws on Sunday
Karen Takes
Charge of Women’s Cup Final
History
will be made at Caersws on Sunday, when Karen Williams of Amlwch,
Anglesey takes charge of the FAW Women’s Cup Final between Cardiff
City Ladies and Pwllheli Ladies. This is the first occasion that our
National Women’s Final has been controlled by a female referee.
Karen
began refereeing in 2003 and quickly progressed through the system,
attaining Class A status in the 2004-2005 season. She regularly referees
Men’s Football on the Anglesey, Caernarfon and the Gwynedd Football
Leagues and will hopefully gain further promotion again in the near
future. Karen also
officiates regularly as an Assistant Referee on the Welsh Alliance and
the Cymru Alliance Leagues.
In
2005, she refereed a Women’s Friendly International between Wales and
a State team from the USA.
She’ll
be assisted on Sunday, by eighteen year old Chloe Lloyd of Welshpool,
Howard Farrell of Abergele and Huw Jones of Oswestry, who will act as
fourth Official.
FAW
Head of Competitions, John Deakin in welcoming the appointment said,
“This is hopefully a milestone for Women Referees in Wales, which will
result in one of our female Officials attaining FIFA Status in the
future. Women’s and girls football is developing rapidly throughout
Wales and the Association is desperately keen to recruit female referees
of all ages, and I look forward to the day when we have Women
officiating on the Welsh Premier League.”

Ton
fear relegation dogfight
.
|
Ton
Pentre, the team who have dominated Macron Welsh League football, are
fearing a relegation battle.
Their
3-2 defeat at home to Bryntirion Athletic means they have slipped
perilously close to the relegation area.
The
Rhondda Bulldogs have five tough matches left to end the 2005-06 season,
four of them away.
And
the club admit they could yet be dragged into the relegation places.
Ton
travel to face leaders Neath Athletic on Saturday and then go to
Pontardawe Town the following Tuesday.
Wins
for four of the bottom five - Briton Ferry, Ely Rangers, Bettws and
Taffs Well - left AFC Llwydcoed bottom of Division One and Ton Pentre
uncomfortably close to the danger zone.
Even
one win should lift Ton clear, but they are used to chasing titles and
not struggling at the other end.

"Jones"
Targets in sight
.
|
Carmarthen
Town's hopes of a second successive European qualification are no longer
a pipe dream says manager Mark Jones.
An
impressive 3-0 home victory over Newi Cefn Druids has maintained Jones's
belief that they can still achieve their target. Victory over the Druids
took Carmarthen up to sixth place, six points adrift of third-placed
Rhyl - the teams go head to head at Richmond Park in two weeks.
Carmarthen have now gathered 10 points from their last four matches, and
with games this week against all but relegated Grange Quins (away) and
Porthmadog (home), further pressure could be exerted on the Lilywhites.
''It's not over by a long way,'' Jones said. ''This is a long season and
it still has some way to run.
''I believe we are capable of winning all our remaining matches as we
are now on a roll and confidence is high.
''Beating TNS midweek was a massive boost for the lads, who now believe
that there's much at stake over the remaining three weeks of the season.
''What is important is that we build on our nice little run which has
put us right back in the mix.''

Fernandez
to undergo operation
|
Spaniard
Efren Fernandez will undergo surgery at the end of the season to fully
recuperate from a leg injury.
The
Reds midfielder has missed the majority of the season after a horrific
challenge in the victory over Aberystwyth in October saw him sidelined
for four months. The popular midfielder, who missed Saturday's Welsh Cup
semi-final defeat after being sent off for the club's U21 side, will
have the operation to remove seven screws and a plate from his left leg.
In the meantime however, he will play through the pain barrier as the
Reds look to establish a top two finish in the Welsh Premier League.
If they manage to accomplish that feat, Llanelli will be hosting
Champions League football next season.
That is something that excites Fernandez, who made the switch from Spain
to Stebo last summer.
"European football would be great for Llanelli," he said.
"That is what I want. I want the best for Llanelli.
"But we have to work very hard to make sure we do it."
