MacWhirter Youth league - Afan lido 2-3 CARMARTHEN TOWN

The 19's continued their poor run of results when Carmarthen came from two goals down to win. The game was littered with free kicks with the referee seemingly unwilling to use advantage to either side, as a result constructive football went out of the window. We had the perfect start when on 3 minutes Rory Healey knocked the ball wide to Luke Borrelli he got into the area and crossed low to Conor Harris who controlled the ball and fired a left footed shot into the net giving the keeper no chance. Conor Harris had a second chance to score on 10 minutes when he received the ball wide left in the area, he tried to chip the keeper but his effort went over the bar. A Carmarthen free kick on the half way was played short and then a cross was played to the far post but despite finding space the resultant shot went wide. On 20 minutes Jonathan Hood played the ball wide to Luke Borrelli, he cut inside the defender and shot from 20 yards but the ball sailed over the crossbar. The Carmarthen keeper made a fine save to his left to deny Jonathan Hood after he was set up by Rory Healey. Connah Williams in the Lido goal did well on the half hour after a Lido free kick on the half way line was bungled and possession was lost. Connah found himself one on one with a Carmarthen attacker but he stood his ground and saved the shot. A Lido attack involving several players ended with Conor Harris shooting straight at the keeper before yet another Carmarthen free kick saw Connah Williams save and concede a corner. Just on half time a through ball caught out the Lido defence but once again Williams saved, although he kicked the ball against Dean Hudson and the ball rebounded to Matt Doyle who cleared.
On 50 minutes Jonathan Hood went down the right and crossed the ball to Matthew Beynon but his header was straight at the keeper, Beynon was again involved two minutes later when with only the keeper to beat his shot was saved by the keeper's legs. The second goal finally arrived after 53 minutes, no surprise it was after a free kick which found Matt Beynon just inside the area and his header went just inside the far post with the keeper well beaten. Carmarthen responded with an attack through the middle, they looked offside but nothing was given and from a good position they shot wide. Grant Fisher broke up a Carmarthen attack but was fouled, he took the free kick to Matthew Beynon who found Jonathan Hood who again tried to lob the keeper but again only succeeded in clearing the crossbar. Just after the hour Jonathan Hood then went down the left cut inside and fed Remi Whitelock who from 30 yards was sizing up a shot. While he was doing this a Carmarthen player knocked the ball behind for a corner. Remi took the corner and placed it right under the crossbar and the keeper did well to punch the ball away for a second corner. Again this caused the defence problems and we won a third corner, for some reason we decided to take a short one and we lost the ball, Carmarthen broke quickly and scored (63 minutes). We lost possession after yet another free kick and it led to a Carmarthen corner on the left, it was played in to the near post and headed in for the equaliser (70 minutes). Four minutes later they were ahead, they had the ball on the right side of our area, the attacker was too strong for Sam Nolan, he crossed low into the area and they scored from 8 yards. In the last ten minutes we pushed forward looking for an equaliser and Matthew Beynon had a goalbound shot which hit a defender. Carmarthen were then awarded a penalty, the shot going well wide of the post. With 4 minutes to go Matthew Beynon from virtually on the goalline crossed the ball to Conor Harris who from 2 yards headed over the crossbar. Then Jonathan Hood took a throw level with the penalty area and from no more than 5 yards Remi Whitelock turned and shot only to hit the keeper with the ball going out for a corner. In the closing seconds a free kick from 25 yards was played in but despite a bit of a scramble in the area Carmarthen cleared the ball and held on for what at one stage was an unlikely victory.
