Following our 3-4 defeat last week at Ely Rangers
nothing short of a win was required in our second group cup game. Last
week Bryntirion won 2-1 at Port Talbot so a difficult game was expected.
Rory Healy was injured and Matt Doyle suspended so Daniel Symmons made his under
19's debut.
We made the ideal start taking the lead after 3
minutes with Carl Payne crossing from the right, Dan Symmons heading to the far
post where Luke Borrelli squeezed the ball past the keeper. Bryntirion's early
attacks seldom troubled the defence who protected Connah Williams quite well.
We had a slice of luck on 21 minutes however when a shot from wide right evaded
everyone, hit the inside of the post and rebounded into the arms of Connah
Williams. Bryntirion weren't long in drawing level, a free kick on 27 minutes
wasn't dealt with and the cross was headed in from close range. From the kick
off we found Dan Symmons down the left but his cross was too close to the keeper
and the danger was averted. The Bryntirion keeper fumbled several shots
and crosses and we seemed to regain the lead on 34 minutes when he fumbled a
long range shot, Carl Payne had followed up to net but the linesman's flag was
up for offside. However on 36 minutes we did retake the lead when Daniel Symmons
made ground down the left and crossed behind a couple of attackers to Jonathan
Hood who scored with a shot from 15 yards. 5 minutes before the break Sam Nolan
was injured and replaced by Daniel Pugh.
Carl Payne was replaced at half time by Dan
Carey and the opening 15 minutes of the second half stuttered along with
numerous stoppages for injuries and free kicks. Just after the hour the
Bryntirion keeper flapped at a right wing free kick, the ball went to Matt
Beynon but his shot hit the crossbar and was cleared. Bryntirion came more into
the game but failed to trouble Connah Williams goal with numerous attacks
breaking down. With 12 minutes to go the ball was played forward to Daniel
Symmons who just beat the keeper to the ball, he turned and shot at the empty
net but the ball went just the wrong side of the post. We got the third goal
with 9 minutes left and it followed a Bryntirion free kick, James McEvoy did
well to clear the free kick from inside the six yard box, the ball was knocked
forward to Jonathan Hood who took the ball around the keeper and fired into the
empty net. As is becoming customary at the moment one bank of lights went out,
when power was restored Remi Whitelock was played in and he shot at the empty
net but like Daniel Symmons shot wide.
