A good day for Lido in the league  (Oct 31)

Without kicking a ball in division 1 today, Lido stay 4th, we could have been overtaken by Barry Town had they won at Bryntirion, and Bryntirion could have joined us level on 19 points had they beaten Barry, Garden Village could also have been on 19 points had they won at home to Goytre Utd, but Goytre beat Garden Village 2-1 and Bryntirion and Barry drew 1-1. Goytre are now 3 points clear of 2nd placed Aberaman but Aber have 2 games in hand. They progress with Lido into the last 16 in the cup following their 2-0 win over Ely Rangers.
Neighbours Port Talbot had a comfortable 3-0 win over 10 man Caldicot Town, Martin Rose scoring twice on 20' and 88, Daniel Thomas scored their 3rd on 78'
Bridgend Town lost to Rhyl and even if being away to the welsh premier league champions wasn't a tough enough task, they had to do it with only 10 men after just 32 seconds, Pakistan International Atif Bashir saw red for a last man tackle, but all credit to Bridgend they held Rhyl at 2-2 until the 83' before Rhyl added their 3rd and 4th goals on 83 and 90'.

Subs: D Lancey, L Shrimpton, N White, V Lewis.

Lido got off to a good start with the opening goal coming in the 11th' scored by Scott McCourbrey.
On 44' Scott Hillman saw yellow, Penalty for Caerau given from a Carl Evans foul for which he received a yellow card, Caerau put away the spot kick to make it 1-1.

Caerau Ely Welsh cup match preview  (Oct 29)

Afan Lido travel to Cardiff on Saturday to take on welsh league division 2 side Caerau Ely at Cwrt -yr-Ala.
This is Caerau's 3rd home game in the welsh cup, in the first round they beat division 1 side Bettws 2-0, and in round 2 they had a very comfortable 5-1 home win over Hay St Mary's, who put out division 3 side Monmouth Town in the prelimary round on penalties, and in round 1 they beat Dinas Powys 2-1 at home. So a 5-1 win by Caerau over the Mid Wales league team was a very good result.
Caerau currently lie 12th in division 2 but have games in hand over most of the teams above them. Last season they finished in the relegation places but were spared relegation to division 3 due to Garw being deducted points for fielding an ineligible player.
We are having a mixed season so far in the league, despite losing 4 league games out of 10 (1 more than the 3 teams above us put together) we are still in 4th place and only 4 points off the leaders Goytre Utd, our home form being the main factor having won 5 and lost 1, but our away form has been poor with 1 win 1 draw and 3 defeats, but in the cup we are unbeaten winning 3 from 3 and still in the hunt in both league cup and Welsh cup.
We go into round 3 having scored 12 goals from our previous 2 games in the welsh cup while on conceding 1. In round 1 we beat Seven Sisters 7-0 away and in round 2 we dispatched Croesyceiliog 3-1 at the Marston, and more of the same would do very nicely to take us through to the last 16 of the Welsh cup.

Afan Lido squad for Saturday's away trip to Aberaman Park - Oct 23

Afan Lido travel to face league champions Aberaman Athletic on Saturday afternoon.

Lido Squad:
M Lewis, J Hood, S Hillman, S Galsworthy, R Williams, C Payne, C Thomas, C Pridham, M Jones, N White, S McCourbrey, G Jones,
D Lancey, D Thomas.

This is undoubtedly our toughest game of the season, against last season's champions, and although there was a bit of turmoil at the club with one of their sponsors and manager leaving, it hasn't effected their performance on the pitch as they lie joint top on 22 points with Goytre but have a game in hand.

They have only lost one game in the league this season and that came at home to Cambrian & Clydach with a surprising scoreline of 6-2 to the visitors, but if memory serves me well I think they had their keeper sent off, which went some way to contributing to the final scoreline.
They have had the luxury of playing 7 of their 9 league games at home so far this season, but even their 2 away games resulted in wins for Aber, with a 2-1 at Dinas and a 3-1 win against Ton Pentre.

Our away form this season isn't the greatest with 1 win and 3 defeats, with the only win coming in the 1st game at Ton Pentre 3-1. Our last 2 defeats has seen us fail to score against Caerleon 3-0 and Barry Town 2-0.
The main reason this season we are still as high as 3rd with 4 defeats from 10 games, is for the first season for ages we haven't had a draw, we have been one of the league draw specialist's in past season's, but our high goal tally in our winning games has seen us avoid draws.

While Aberaman must be strong favourites to take all 3 points, we can never be discounted with our 3 strikers who will score goals if they get the service. so we are in with a fighting chance.

Lido U19's 8-0 Dinas Powys - Oct 22

We finally scored the goals that the potential of this side warranted and we still have the chance of making the final two to qualify for the quarter finals.
The only down side was the recurrence of an ankle injury picked up by Josh Tobin on his debut in goal, Connah Williams was on the bench and he played his part in this comprehensive win.
We got off to a flyer with Jonathan Hood netting in 57 seconds after he waltzed past some indifferent challenges. Carl Payne made it two on 18 minutes and he made it three on 23 minutes when Dan Symmons found him with a great through ball. A minute later Jonathan Hood made it four and it was now a case of how many we'd score.  On the half hour in a rare Powys attack Josh Tobin dived at a player's feet but turned his ankle and had to leave the field.
Carl Payne netted his hat trick in the 58th minute when despite being wide right in the area and close to the goal line he managed to find the net. The ref adjudged that James McEvoy was fouled in the area and Rory Healey stepped up to score the penalty to make it 6-0 on 64 minutes. James McEvoy then netted on 77 minutes when he picked up a loose ball cut in and from the edge of the area score with a left footed shot. In added on time Nial Lewis won a corner on our right, he floated the ball in for Conor Harris to head the eighth.

Lido side  Josh Tobin  Sam Nolan  Grant Fisher  Matt Beynon  Andrew Collins  James McEvoy  Dan Symmons  Rory Healey  Carl Payne  Jonathan Hood  Conor Harris

Subs:
12 Nial Lewis for Carl Payne 58
14 Matt Doyle
15 Dan Pugh for Jonathan Hood 53
GK Connah Williams for Josh Tobin 30

Goals  Jonathan Hood 1 and 24  Carl Payne 18 23 and 58  Rory Healey 64  James McEvoy 77 and Conor Harris 90 +2

Ely Rangers match summary - Oct 17

M Lewis, C Payne, N White, J Hood, S Hillman, D Thomas, M Jones, C Pridham,  C Evans, S McCourbrey, S Galsworthy.
Subs: G Jones, R Williams, C Baker,  D Lancey, C Thomas.

Mark Robbo made several changes to the starting line up following last weeks 3-0 defeat at Caerleon, and they paid off as Lido ran out 4-0 winners in front of the 110 faithful at the Marston.
We went 1-0 on 35' when Jonah converted a penalty to give Lido the lead. Just before half time Captain Carl Evans made it 2-0.

Right on the hour Jonah scored his 2nd of the game to make it 3-0, and to round things off Jon Hood made it 4-0 on 75'.
We climb up to 3rd in the table following today's win behind Goytre and Aberaman who both won.

Ely Rangers match preview - Oct 16

Tomorrow we play Ely Rangers for the first time since their return to division 1 after their stint in division 2. They are not enjoying the start to life back in division 1 that they would have hoped for and lie currently bottom of the division, which is not a good sign for us, as the last time we have played teams in the bottom two places in the league (Caerleon) we were given a 3-0 beating.

Our home record is good so far this season, with 4 wins and 1 defeat, which came in the very first game of the season against Bridgend, since then we have rattled off 4 wins on the trot scoring 11 and conceding 5.

We should be at full strength again for Saturday's game, plus the inclusion of Damon Thomas who has transferred back to Lido following his stay at neighbours Trefelin.

Even though we have lost 4 of the 9 games in the league this season we are still in 5th place and only 4 points off the league leaders Goytre, but all 4 teams directly below us all have a game in hand and could leapfrog us if they win that game in hand, so a win against Ely Rangers is vital if we are to keep our slim hopes of a top 2 finish alive.

The Lido squad to play Ely Rangers is: Oct 15

 M Lewis, C Payne, C Baker, N White, J Hood, G Jones, S Hillman, D Thomas, D Lancey, M Jones, C Pridham, C Thomas, R Williams, C Evans, S McCourbrey, S Galsworthy.

Damon Thomas makes a welcome return to Lido, as he has re-signed for the club from Trefelin.

Caerleon match summary - Oct 10
Today's Afan Lido line up to face Caerleon at Cold Bath Road is:

Mike Lewis, Jonathan Hood, Scott McCourbrey, C Evans, Rhys Williams, Carl Payne, Craig Baker, Chris Pridham, Mark Jones, Nathan White, Damien Lancey.

Subs:
Vince Lewis, Ryan Frankcom, Gavin Jones, Corey Thomas.

Today we go in search of our first win at Cold Bath Road since our relegation from the welsh premier league, and things didn't start according to plan, Dan Cueto putting the home side ahead after 7'.

Caerleon doubled their lead on 40' with Dan Cueto getting his 2nd goal of the game, just as one would think the half couldn't get any worse, Caerleon score a 3rd on 45' goal came from Jon Pardue. One comment reports were playing terrible, and the 3-0 score line certainly reflects that against the team 17th in the table before today's game.

No further goals in the 2nd half and a disappointing result for Lido

FINAL SCORE Caerleon 3-0 Afan Lido

Caerleon match preview - Oct 9

Saturday we travel to Gwent to take on Caerleon. Caerleon have not had the best of starts to the season, and currently lie in 17th place, this will be their 5th home game of the season, and they have only recorded one victory and that came on their 2nd home game of the season against Dinas Powys back in August. They have only lost once at home so far but that was a heavy 6-0 defeat by Goytre, they have also drawn 2.

Cold Bath Road hasn't been a happy hunting ground for the Lido, with 3 defeats and 1 draw in our last 4 visits, last season we came away with the only point since our return to the welsh league, when we drew 2-2.

They have only managed 5 goals so far this season from their 8 games, while conceding 17, while our record is 16 scored and 10 conceded, of those 16 goals, Nathan White has scored 10 of them, and no other Lido player has scored more than 1, but our 2 other strikers Scott McCourbrey has 1 from 3 games and Mark Jones has only played 1 game and is still waiting to open his account in the league.

We are currently in 3rd place and a win could take us top, but we rely Taffs Well and Cambrian & Clydach to get the better of Goytre and Aberaman, so even 3 points (which is far from certain) could see us remain in 3rd, or worse anything other than 3 points could see us drop several places.  We have only kept 2 clean sheets this season, against Corries last time out and in our 5-0 home win against West End, while we have only failed to score once in any league match this season and that was in the 2-0 defeat at Barry Town, while Caerleon have failed to score in 4 of their games and only kept 1 clean sheet.

Cardiff Corries match summary - Oct 7

Lido line up:
M Lewis, J Hood, C Evans, R Williams, C Payne, C Baker, C Pridham, S McCourbrey, M Jones, N White, D Lancey.

Subs:
C Thomas, G Jones, R Frankcom, K Roberts.

The first half ended all square at 0-0 with Lido having the better of the game, but not managing to score.

The long awaited breakthrough eventually came. We went 1-0 on 65' with Nathan White's 9th goal of the season, Nathan made it 2-0 on 80'.

Final score Lido 2-0 Corries. Man of the match Nathan White. Lido now move up to 3rd.

Cardiff Corries match preview - Oct 7

Tonight we welcome Cardiff Corinthians to the Marston, in a game that if we win will see us climb to 3rd place in the table, and if we win our away game on Saturday away to Caerleon and results for Aberaman and Goytre go against them we could hit the summit, though Aberaman must be big favourites to claim all 3 points Thursday night at home to Taffs Well, but Goytre have a tough assignment away to Cambrian & Clydach both of whom are the only 2 remaining unbeaten sides in division 1. The start to this season hasn't seen a team dominate so far and only 5 points separate the top 10 clubs, so any slip ups can be very costly to a team.

Corries currently lie in 16th place and though they lost their first 4 league games, their form has turned the corner, with 2 wins from their last 3 games, their last a 3-0 home win over Ton Pentre at home. Of their 7 league games played so far 6 have been away due to their ground was still being used for the cricket season and unavailable to them, they will want to start getting points on the board (after tonight) as the likelihood is that 5 teams will be relegated at the end of the season, as the first division reduces to 16 teams from next season.

Last season we had a comfortable win over Corries with a 4-0 win at the Marston, our trip to Cardiff saw us play out a 2-2 draw with Corries equalising in injury time.

Our current form is very good (if you exclude the 2-0 defeat at Barry) with 6 wins in our last 7 games in league and cup competitions with us scoring 24 goals and conceding just 6. And our strike force of Nathan White and Scott McCourbrey has been strengthened even more with the signing of former Lido youth striker Mark Jones, against Croesyceiliog in the cup manager Mark Robbo played with 3 strikers up front and all 3 ended up on the score sheet, he may go for the same formation tonight, or face a headache of which striker to leave out or move to midfield, but that's a better headache than not having the 3 of them available.

Full round up of all the scores from the welsh cup

Neath 2 - 2 Llanelli (AET)
Llanelli win 3-2 on Penalties
This game had it all in our featured match as Llanelli progressed to the Third Round. The Reds took the lead as Rhys Griffiths tapped in from a crowded Andy Legg corner, which Anthony Williams failed to gather. Craig Steins then equalised in the 34th minute. In the 83rd minute, Lee Phillips pulled Craig Steins back in the box and was sent-off, but Chris Llewellyn's penalty was well saved by Ashley Morris.

In Extra Time, Chris Holloway headed in from close range after Rhys Griffiths' initial header hit the bar in the 111th minute. In dramatic style, a well worked Neath Free-kick was then headed in by Chris Llewellyn in the 118th minute. Llanelli player/manager Andy Legg was then sent-off for pushing in the 119th minute and the match went to penalties. Ironically, it was Morris saving a Llewellyn penalty, which won it for the visitors.

Afan Lido ease passed Croesyceiliog in the welsh cup

We started off with a flying goal in the first minute of the game, Scott McCourbrey putting the Lido ahead. No other goals scored in the remaining 45 minutes.

Six minutes into the 2nd half and Lido doubled the lead, the goal came from defender Rhys Williams. We went 3-0 up on 63' with Nathan White getting on the scoresheet.

On 78' Carl Payne scored the goal of the game with a beauty, 4-0 Lido. 4' later Croesyceiliog pull back a consolation goal, 4-1.

On 85' new signing Mark (Jonah) Jones scores number 5 and with that all three strikers get on the scoresheet today, 5-1 Lido.
