Port Talbot beat TNS to reach cup semi final (Feb-27) 18:00

The New Saints 2-2 Port Talbot Town (Port Talbot win 4-3 on penalties)
Aeron Edwards, 14' Alex Darlington, 47' - Martin Rose, 26'; Lee John 35'
The Saints had the better of the opening exchanges and they deserved their lead when the ball landed in the path of Aeron Edwards after the Steelmen had blocked a Jamie Wood shot. The equaliser came in the 26th minute, when a Lloyd Grist corner was clinically headed home by striker Martin Rose.
Then, a terrible error from Saints 'keeper Paul Harrison in the 35th minute, on the edge of his box gifted a goal to Lee John as the visitors took the lead. Just two minutes after the break the Saints restored parity when Edwards' initial shot was blocked and Alex Darlington followed up to finish well.
No further goals in the game or extra time, so it went to a shoot out which turned out to be the Lee Kendall show, he save TNS's first spot kick and after Saint's Chris Seargeant effort came off the bar, up popped Kendall to score Port's winning penalty to win the shoot out 4-3 and progress to the semi finals along with Bala Town and Prestatyn Town who beat Rhyl 5-3 on  penalties after 4-4 in normal and extra time.

Port Talbot Line up:
Lee Kendall, Leigh De-Vulgt, Lloyd Grist, Matthew Thompson (Gary Bansor 105'),Matthew Rees, Lee Surman, Lee John, Scott Barrow, Martin Rose, Daniel Thomas, Drew Fahiya (Nicky Holland 96')

Port Talbot's reward for beating TNS is a semi final draw against Lido's victors Bala Town, the other semi is between Prestatyn Town and Bangor City.

Wales legend Hartson is set to take over at Barry Town (Feb-27) 08:30

WALES legend John Hartson is set to become boss at Welsh League club Barry Town.
Businessman Clayton Jones is set to buy Barry ... and wants Hartson to lead the club back into Europe as director of football.
He also sees Hartson as an ambassador for the club, who once were top dogs in the Welsh Premier, working to build a strong rapport with businesses in and around the Vale of Glamorgan town.
Jones, who has business links with Macedonia, also wants Hartson to work closely with young footballers he wants to bring in from the country and play for Barry.
Former Wales, Arsenal and Celtic striker Hartson confirmed today he has been approached by Welsh businessman Jones, who is set to become Barry’s new owner.
Jones, who set St David’s Day as the date he wanted completion on his bid to buy the football club, has big ambitions for Barry and is keen for current manager Gavin Chesterfield and Hartson to work side-by-side.
Terms have been agreed between Jones and Barry owner Stuart Lovering on the sale of the former Welsh Premier champions and that is likely to be completed over the next few weeks.
“We are meeting John Hartson’s agent in Covent Garden, London next week,” said Jones.
“We believe Gavin Chesterfield and John can work together.
“Our hope is that John would be director of football, working with Gavin.
“We have agreed outline terms with John’s agent, while we will have more talks next week.”.
Hartson is wanted as a figurehead and Jones is keen for him to have Wales, Arsenal and Celtic memorabilia on prominent display around the Jenner Park social club. Current manager Chesterfield, who has kept Barry’s squad together despite having little or no budget to pay players, said: “It makes sense for John to come in and I would welcome the chance to work with him.
“It is a statement of intent from then potential new owner to say that this club is on the up again.”

County boss Holdsworth playing title numbers game (Feb-27) 12:30

CHAMPIONS-ELECT Newport County are now playing the numbers game, with the Blue Square South title tantalisingly close.
Dean Holdsworth’s County can sew up the title in the next few weeks, having a 21-point lead over second-placed Chelmsford City.
Today’s opponents Braintree Town would be the closest team to County if they win their two games in hand.
But Exiles boss Dean Holdsworth is in confident mood, with his side unbeaten at Spytty Park this season.
“The lads are looking forward to playing at home and want to make sure our ground is kept as a fortress,” said Holdsworth.
“What we’re not doing is looking at a points number where we can lift the trophy.
“I know it’s boring, but we will just keep focusing on the next game, trying to win it. And that game is against Braintree.
“We’ve got seven games next month and that will be an interesting time for us.
“But I can honestly say we’re not looking that far ahead despite the lead we have.
“I know I keep saying it every week, but we have won nothing yet at this stage of the season.”
Holdsworth has told his players to keep on pushing themselves right until the end of the campaign.
“Newport is a happy place to be at the moment, the players are enjoying their football and so too are the supporters.
“The aim is to keep it that way until the last game of the season.
“People are coming up to myself and the players with this statistic and that statistic about breaking records.
“That’s great to hear, but I’ve told the players that they can be history-makers by continuing to play the way they are.
“Keeping their feet firmly on the ground will be important in the next few weeks.”

Shephard keen to keep his Martyrs flock in good shape (Feb-27) 12:30

MERTHYR Tydfil boss Garry Shephard is urging his players to pick up points sooner rather than later in their bid to stay in the Zamaretto Premier Division.
The Martyrs play host to second-from-bottom Hemel Hempstead today (3pm) and are in danger of being drawn into a relegation dogfight.
Merthyr were deducted 10 points last summer after falling into administration, and their main objective this term is Premier survival.
With three defeats from their last four games, it’s been a bad few weeks for the Martyrs.
But Shephard welcomes back four players from suspension and believes Merthyr are good enough to move away from relegation trouble.
“We’ve played a couple of games more than the clubs around us,” he said.
“But we need to get the points in the bag.
“We don’t want to leave being safe until the end of the season.
“This is an ideal fixture for us. We must win.
“I don’t care if it’s not pretty we need the points badly. If we don’t start picking up points then it could be a close finish.
“That is the last thing this club wants after the players have done so well this season.
“There’s been more stories here than Harry Potter, but we’ve somehow got through it.
“If we can stay in this division, then next season we will be on equal pegging with the rest of the clubs.
“We won’t be fighting the 10-point deficit that has been hanging over us all season and we can kick on.”

Swansea City will defend FAW charge after Derby clash (Feb-27) 12:30

Swansea City will defend a charge of failing to control their players in last Saturday's match at Derby County.
The charge follows a mass confrontation between both sets of players sparked by Swansea's Gorka Pintado, who was sent off for a bad tackle on Robbie Savage. The Swans have until 5 March to submit evidence to the FA of Wales, while Derby have also been charged by the FA.
"We will be defending ourselves because we didn't do anything wrong," said Swansea manager Paulo Sousa.
Pintado will start a four-match ban against Peterborough on Saturday, after earning his second red card of the campaign for the tackle on former Wales midfielder Savage. Earlier in the game at Pride Park - won 1-0 by Swansea - the Rams had James McEveley sent off, having been booked twice for poor tackles on Swansea pair Joe Allen and Nathan Dyer. "I think if you look back to the bad tackle on Joe Allen, none of our players reacted, even though they all thought it was a red card," Sousa told the Swansea website. "After Gorka's tackle there were a lot of Derby players around him, pushing him to the ground.
"My players arrived later to separate things and protect Gorka, who was on the ground.
"I saw my team's solidarity and, as far as I am concerned, the position is very clear that they didn't do anything wrong.
"We will state our case to the FAW and I am sure we will have a fair hearing.''

Connahs Quay manager and assistant change places (Feb-27) 12:30

The playing and administrative management of GAP Connah's Quay Nomads have agreed that Mark McGregor and Ken Price will change positions at the club. Ken will become the Manager and Mark the Assistant Manager. Developing all players, from youth and junior to senior, by the highest standards of coaching is a vital element of the clubs strategic plan, and when Mark joined the club it was agreed that we would support him in getting his coaching certificates. This move will enable him to focus on achieving his 'A' certificate as soon as possible Mark and Ken have worked as a team all season and have done a tremendous job considering the turmoil of the close season. With this teamwork continuing, the club's management believe the short and long term objectives of both the club and the two managers will be met. This change will be effective after our Principality Welsh Premier Football League match at Technogroup Welshpool Town on Saturday 27th February.

Aberaman club captain leaves to join Bridgend (Feb-26) 02:00

Aberaman's captain John Kift has left welsh league champions Aberaman and has signed for the welsh league's rich kids Bridgend Town. Bridgend who looked to have amassed a title challenging side during pre-season now look more likely to be playing in division 2 next season than in the super 12, and have reacted to try and help them rise up the table. Aberaman's director of football said of Kift " I have known John for a couple of years now and he is one of the nicest people I have come across in football and I would like to personally thank him for his contribution to the club and wish him and his future wife all the very best in the future".

Aber's manager Leighton James wasted no time in adding to his squad following the departure of Kift by signing Ben Luck from division 2 leaders Cwmbran Celtic, new signing Luck was added to last night's squad that played out a 2-2 draw at home to Bryntirion.

Swans chairman hoping for full houses (Feb-26) 01:50

SWANSEA City want a run of Liberty full houses as they push for the Premier League, with Huw Jenkins declaring: "Our players deserve your support."

Swansea's average gate in this league campaign to date is a healthy 15,234.

But Jenkins wants fans to turn out in force for the seven remaining home fixtures as Swansea go for the ultimate promotion.

"When you consider what the players and Paulo (Sousa) have done this season, our stadium should be full every week," the Swansea chairman said.

"If we are going to get the recognition we deserve as a club, and if we are going to keep moving forward, we want to see a full house every time we play at home.

"This is nothing to do with finances.

"I'm talking about what our players and management deserve, and that is to be walking out in front of 18,000 or 19,000 every week.

"It would be great for the players because of the atmosphere a big crowd generates, and it would also be good for the perception of our club."

Swansea attracted only just over 15,000 fans for their last home fixture, the glamour game against Newcastle.

The disappointing turnout was put down to the fact that the match was televised live, and that it clashed with Wales's Six Nations meeting with Scotland.

But Swansea hope they will attract a much bigger crowd when struggling Peterborough United visit this weekend.

"We are aware that we have come a long way in terms of crowds in the last few years," Jenkins added. "We know that averaging more than 15,000 is a great achievement when you consider where our gates were just a few years ago.

"But Paulo is an ambitious man and he is a winner.

"He wants to see our club moving forward, and one way of us doing that is to have a full ground every week."

Bangor's manager looking for revenge against Llanelli in the cup (Feb-26) 01:40

NEVILLE POWELL has full faith in his Bangor side’s ability to gain revenge when they tackle mighty Llanelli in the Welsh Cup quarter-finals at Farrar Road this Saturday.

Twice this season the Citizens have lost 3-2 to Andy Legg’s South Wales Reds in the Welsh Premier League, but on both occasions the All-Blues were unlucky to end up with nothing.

City, who defeated Llanelli 4-2 after extra time in a fantastic 2008 Welsh Cup final, have lifted the trophy for the past two years under Powell and will not give up their hold on Wales’ most prestigious knockout competition without a fight.

Powell, unbeaten in 15 Welsh Cup ties as Bangor boss, cannot wait for the visit of the Welsh Premier leaders. His team enter the last eight tie full of confidence after winning seven of their last nine league games, including a 3-2 triumph over Haverfordwest County at Farrar Road on Saturday.

“The Welsh Cup is always a special occasion for Bangor City,” said Powell. “The fans always come out in force and what better incentive could there be for a big crowd than the visit of the Welsh Premier League leaders?

“We felt we deserved something from both games we’ve played against them this season. The lads are full of confidence and are really looking forward to it – it should be a cracker.”

Bangor will be without cup-tied midfielder Nicky Ward, but striker Lee Hunt never appeared for previous club Rhyl in the first three rounds so is eligible.

Prestatyn Town FC host champions Rhyl FC in Welsh Cup (Feb-26) 01:40

THE battle of Denbighshire is just three days away and local football followers cannot wait.

This Saturday brings a clash of the titans as Prestatyn Town entertain neighbours Rhyl in the quarter-finals of the Welsh Cup.

Although the Seasiders are yet to beat the Lilywhites in six attempts since elevating to the Welsh Premier League, the gap between the clubs is closing all the time.

Last season, Prestatyn’s first in the WPL, it was no contest with eventual champions Rhyl winning the derby league encounters 7-2 and 4-1.

This season, however, has brought a turnaround with Town strengthening by making a number of experienced signings and the Lilywhites losing 15 members of their title-winning squad.

As a result, the two WPL tussles between the coastal rivals have ended 0-0 and 1-1, although Rhyl did come out on top twice in the Loosemores League Cup group stage games, winning 2-1 at Belle Vue and 3-0 at Bastion Gardens.

But Prestatyn will see Saturday’s Welsh Cup epic as not only a chance to make a massive statement in the battle for Denbighshire superiority, but also an opportunity to reach the semi-finals of Wales’ most prestigious knockout competition for the first time in their history.

Rhyl manager, Greg Strong understands only too well the importance of Saturday’s clash as an alternative route to another campaign in Europe.

Although somewhat off the pace to retain their Welsh Premier crown and a spot in next season’s Champions League, the Lilywhites are still very much in the race for a top-three finish to claim an automatic place in the Europa League – a prize also on offer to the winners of the Welsh Cup.

“The Welsh Cup is as important to us as the league,” said Strong yesterday. “It’s the biggest and best cup tournament in the country, it’s a trophy everyone wants to get their hands on and, of course, it provides another way into Europe.”

Craig Bellamy to miss Wales friendly against Sweden (Feb-26) 01:40

Wales captain Craig Bellamy is set to be left out of John Toshack's squad for the 3 March friendly with Sweden.

It is understood the Wales boss wants to keep faith with the young team that demolished Scotland 3-0 in November.

Toshack is keen to assess the growing partnership between strikers Ched Evans and Simon Church.

This latest move will call into question Bellamy's Wales future, but all the signs are he will be picked as normal when competitive action resumes.

Wales begin qualification for Euro 2012 on 4 September, with their group opponents including England, Switzerland, Montenegro and Bulgaria.

The five countries will meet to decide the fixtures on 15 March.

Bellamy has a well-documented problem with recurring knee injuries and managers have come to realise that the 30-year-old must be used sparingly to get the best out of him.

Former Wales striker Iwan Roberts doubts whether the striker will ever play a friendly again.

"His history with injury problems means he'll only play in the competitive games from now on," said Roberts, who played with Bellamy at Norwich City.

"If that means Wales will get the best out of him in the qualifying games, then I think that's a fair arrangement."

Bellamy remains a key player for his club Manchester City and he played every minute of his club's 3-1 FA Cup defeat at Stoke City on Tuesday night, a match that was only decided in extra time.

New Saints held and miss out in Welsh Premier (Feb-25) 15:40

THE NEW SAINTS missed out on the chance to go to the top of the Welsh Premier after being held to a goalless draw at Airbus UK last night.

Saints moved level on points with leaders Llanelli, but have an inferior goal difference and have now played two more games.

The Airfield jinx continued as Chris Sharp, Tommy Holmes and Craig Jones all went close for TNS, while Airbus had an effort cleared off the line.

Rhyl went goal crazy at Belle Vue, moving up to third spot after whipping depleted Bala Town 5-2.

Andy Pearson hit the opener after nine minutes and it opened the floodgates as Chris Williams, Mark Connolly (2) and Rob Turner all netted before John Toner (37) pulled one back for the visitors.

Toner added a second midway through the second half.

Wrexham lose to Stevenage (Feb-25) 15:40

Stevenage Borough closed the gap on leaders Oxford to three points after beating Wrexham at the Racecourse.
Mark Roberts grabbed the game's only goal on the stroke of half time heading home from close range from a corner.

Moments earlier, Wrexham's Luke Holden saw his shot cleared off the line by Mark Albrighton.

Jon Ashton rescued the visitors in the second half with a goal-line clearance from Matthew Wolfenden's shot as they held on for maximum points.

Wrexham manager Dean Saunders: "Luke Holden was clean through, it hits the keeper's leg and it looks like it's in the net and the defender has come from nowhere - a miraculous clearance.

"Then they've gone up the other end and scored from a set-play which is disappointing right on half time.

"You need everybody bang at it and we didn't have everybody bang at it tonight to play the football to get the right service to the front men.

"So it turned into a bit of a battle in the first half. Second half we came out, totally dominated the game and had the best chances."

A mixed night for neighbours Port Talbot & Neath (Feb-24) 05:00

There was good and not so good news for Lido's neighbours on Tuesday, firstly Port Talbot's manager Mark Jones signed a new contract at the Victoria Road club, which will keep him at the club until the end of the 2011/2012 season. Since Jones re-joined the club last season, he has taken the club from mid table to within sight of a top 3 finish. The club has been working on getting the playing staff to commit to new contracts but Mark Jones signature is equally as important to the club.
For Neath the Tuesday wasn't the night they had hoped for, they were home to Prestatyn in the league and were hoping to claim 3 points to kick start their 2nd half of the season that promised so much a few months ago. But in the end they had to come from behind to settle for a point. Ian Griffiths put the visitors ahead on 11' but they couldn't hold out and the Eagles salvaged a point with a Craig Steins goal on 65'. They must also had been disappointed with the attendance which was just 123.

New Wrexham chairman looking to build bridges (Feb 23) 17:00

New Wrexham chairman Ian Roberts said he had no objection in principle to fans owning shares in the Blue Square Premier club.
Roberts took over at the helm last Friday following the resignation of major shareholder Geoff Moss, who had previously ruled out any supporter involvement.
But speaking to members of Wrexham Supporters Trust – his third meeting with fans in six days – Roberts said: “I am trying to build bridges and I would like to see some involvement with the fans in the running of the club.
“Other directors of the club, also, are not against the idea in principle, but it’s a case of how we set it up. We can’t change what has happened in the past, but we have discussed it at board level.
“I don’t know if we can give you everything you want, but we’ll have to sit down with representatives of the Trust and see if we can reach a happy medium.
“And personally speaking I don’t have a problem with a nominated Trust member on the board.”
For more than two years now the Trust has ring-fenced a war chest of more than £360,000 to pursue its aim of purchasing equity in the club, and the group’s chairman Lindsay Jones welcomed the change of heart.
“This looks to be a major step forward from the situation we have had before,” he said.
“Our aspirations have always been to have equity in the club and it’s great to hear Ian Roberts has not knocked this aside.”
Roberts said the acquisition of the rugby league side Crusaders would complement rather than compete with the football club and tried to reassure the fans that both clubs would work alongside each other to create a centre of sporting excellence at the Racecourse.
Earlier, new Trust president Bryn Law, a lifelong Wrexham fan and television journalist, said he hoped the recent boardroom changes would signal a new spirit of partnership between the club and its supporters.
Reminding everyone present that fans were the lifeblood of clubs, he said: “We have a duty of care to this football club and we have to try and ensure its long-term health.
“The best way we can do that is collectively rather than have a ‘them and us’ situation. We just want a decent football club to go and cheer on every couple of weeks, to enjoy the game and to take our children to.”

Shephard targets quick points to ease Merthyr relegation fears (Feb 23) 16:20

MERTHYR Tydfil have collected just one point from a possible 12 but seek to reduce the prospect of a relegation dogfight by beating Truro City tonight (7.45pm).

The Martyrs who had 10 points deducted at the start of the season for falling into administration last summer were challenging for a late play-off bid.

But recent bad form now has them looking over their shoulder, with boss Garry Shephard fearful that they could yet be sucked into a Zamaretto League relegation battle. “We are not past the finishing post yet and we need a few more points to make sure we stay in this division,” said Shephard.

“But we have been hit by a series of suspensions and injuries – and it really has taken its toll.

“There is no doubting the talents our youngsters have, but when they play against senior players there is a strength issue.

“I’m sure given the experience and another year’s development they will be better for it.”

Shephard admits he has been studying the league table but believes the pressure valve will be released if Truro succumb at Penydarren Park.

“We’re four points away from the danger zone and I’d rather pick up points sooner rather than later,” he said.

“If you go the last couple of game then anything can happen.

“But as I said at the start of the season after everything that went on survival is the key for us.”

Haverfordwest would like their £500 back from the Welsh FA (Feb 22) 10:00

Bluebirds Chairman Rob Summons has responded to the comments made on the welsh premier official website that his club were the precedent in the postponing of Llanelli's trip and game against Bala on Sunday. He talked to the clubs official website saying.
"We note with interest on the Welsh Premier official web site that the match between Bala Town FC and Llanelli AFC was postponed today because it was deemed that there was a danger to the Llanelli contingent in making the journey because of the prevailing weather conditions.
The same thing happened to Haverfordwest County four years ago when we were due to travel to play at Total Network Solutions FC and on the day of the game there was very heavy snow in Pembrokeshire which meant that some of our squad couldn't even get out of Tenby and the surrounding area because the snow was so deep. Indeed, we consulted a local police commander before contacting TNS and he categorically stated that we should NOT take the risk of travel that day – so we made sure that we immediately contacted TNS and informed them of our genuine problems. The senior police officer supplied us with written confirmation of his warning and we sent this, together with photographs of the snow, to the Welsh FA, to support our genuine and insurmountable problem.
We also contacted the Welsh FA and we were told that we had to travel but simply couldn't risk the safety of our playing and managerial staff and so the game did not take place. The outcome of this incident was that we were fined
£500 by the Welsh FA and the game was eventually replayed at another date.
It seems that Llanelli will be allowed to replay the match, like us, but have not as yet been hit with a fine. Mention is rightly made of the league's ‘duty of care to clubs' players and managers' but it seems that this duty did not apply to us four years ago.
We must make it very clear that we are
NOT asking for Llanelli to be fined because we can understand their problem, and feel that the Welsh FA has made the right decision in a difficult situation. What does beg the question is whether the Welsh FA could now return our £500 as an act of good faith since we had indeed set the precedent as we were faced with the identical problem but we appeared to be treated differently!"

Savage takes swipe at Pintado over red-card challenge (Feb 22) 10:20

OUTSPOKEN former Wales international Robbie Savage has launched a scathing attack on Swansea City’s Gorka Pintado, claiming the Spaniard could have ended his career. In a fiery encounter at Pride Park, striker Pintado was sent off for a terrible challenge on Savage in the 72nd minute.

And the veteran Derby midfielder was left fuming by a tackle which he believes could easily have broken his leg.

Initially claiming Pintado deserves more than the mandatory three-match ban for a straight red card, a statement he later retracted, Savage was in one of his notoriously feisty moods after the final whistle.

And, while suggesting many fans in British football may have been happy he was on the wrong end of Pintado’s recklessness, he let the Spaniard know exactly what he thought of him. “That was a career-ending tackle,” he declared. “It was one of the worst I’ve ever seen. It’s a good job I used my experience to get out of the way.

“If I hadn’t done that I would have had a broken leg and that would have ended my career.

“He should get banned for more than three games for that.

“I play on the edge but that was terrible. He knew he had to go.”

Blaming Pintado – who declined to comment after the game – for the 18-man brawl that followed the incident, Savage said: “If the guy hadn’t lunged from 40 yards, two-footed and thigh-high, that wouldn’t have happened.

“Most people will be glad it was on me. But what I want to see, as captain, is all my teammates coming in and sticking up for me.”

Steelmen very much on target for Europe (Feb 21) 10:00/span>

THE Steelmen followed up the 7-0 drubbing of Cefn Druids midweek with another competent performance to produced three more points in their bid for a Euro spot.

Mark Jones’ side started where they left off four days earlier when they rushed to a 3-0 lead by half time.

But in the final 45 minutes Port Talbot took their foot off the gas and Welshpool battened down the hatches.

Top scorer Martin Rose made the first mark in the 20th minute when he was nudged off the ball in the box and picked himself up to convert from the spot. Five minutes later, Neil Thomas doubled the Steelmen’s lead when a mix-up in the visitors’ defence saw the ball break free for Thomas to fire into an empty net. The third arrived on the stroke of half time, when a Liam McCreesh header rebounded to skipper Matthew Rees to score from close range.

Having created a winning position, Port Talbot dropped a few gears and protected their lead while the Lilywhites toiled purposefully but to no effect. The only blip for the home side was the late sending off of star man McCreesh.

Chances missed in vital win for Carmarthen (Feb 21) 10:00

THIS was a “must-win” for Carmarthen in their quest for a super league spot, and for manager Deryn Brace it was all about the result.

They clinched a vital three points after dominating the game but again missed a hatful of chances. Indeed, had it not been for the heroics of Caersws ’keeper David Jones it would have been a much greater margin of success.

The only goal came in the 29th minute when Nathan Cotterall was released down the right and he linked with Paul Fowler and Danny Thomas for Mark Pritchard to tuck away his first goal since August. That soothed nerves in the home camp, mindful of the fact their record this season at Richmond Park is less than convincing.

The Old Gold then proceeded to create several good opportunities but they were haunted by the same old story of not being able to convert them. Jones was also a big obstacle and he intervened on two occasions to deny Fowler.

The bottom club created a solitary chance in the first half but failed to get a shot on goal in the second as Carmarthen ’keeper Neil Thomas cut a forlorn figure.

Merthyr throw it away (Feb 21) 10:00

MERTHYR could have had six after completely outplaying high-flying Bashley only to lose through lack of composure in front of goal and defensive errors.

After Steve Williams had struck the home side’s woodwork on 12 minutes, Merthyr were denied again three minutes later as Bashley keeper David Elm palmed away a half-volley from Kris Leek.

However, a calamitous error from Merthyr keeper Andrew Delve on 31 minutes allowed Dave Allen’s harmless shot to trickle in for the opener as Bashley mounted their first attack.

A second disaster gifted Bashley another  simple goal. This time, Merthyr defender Simon Gregory failed to pick up striker Mark Gamble and  Delve failed to connect with the cross and Gamble nudged the ball past him.

A free-kick on 54 minutes saw Bashley go 3-0 ahead as Allen was given a free header from which, this time, Delve had no chance.

But Merthyr kept up the tempo and Marcus Griffiths did take one  chance, on 66 minutes, to provide a lifeline. And after both Cortez Belle and Lee Hartshorn headed wide Scott Armitage snatched a second for the Martyrs on 82 minutes with a spectacular volley.

The Martyrs had chances to rescue a point as defender Matthew Parnell made a last-gasp tackle to deny Belle, who was denied again when a free header failed to  find the target.

Collins inspires County’s blitz (Feb 21) 10:0

COUNTY looked every bit the champions they are soon to become as they contemptuously brushed aside Hampton on a freezing cold afternoon in London.

County produced a stunning first-half performance in which Jamie Collins, who was signed from Havant early this season, played a big part.

The left-back floated a delightful ball into space for Craig Reid to lob keeper Matt Lovett, which gave County a seventh-minute lead. Altogether the Newport forwards peppered the home goal with 16 first-half goal attempts.

The second goal arrived in the 34th minute, when Collins struck a diagonal ball to Reid who, after a quick interchange with Charlie Henry, played into the path of consistent midfield player Wayne Turk who struck his first goal of the season.

In the 36th minute Reid took his tally to 23, courtesy of a penalty awarded after home defender Orlando Jeffrey had tugged the shirt of the Newport front man.

Sam Foley almost made it four in the 42nd minute when he hit the woodwork and then went one better in the closing seconds of the game when he nodded in a Danny Rose corner to make it 4-0.

County boss Dean Holdsworth described his side’s first-half performance as magnificent.

County, who travel to Worcester tomorrow, are still 18 points clear at the top.

Jones: We must scrap harder (Feb 21) 10:0

BLUEBIRDS’ boss Dave Jones has warned his players they need to start battling harder if they are to avoid defeats such as the one they suffered at the hands of Barnsley.

Jones did not mince his words after his side lost out thanks to two first-half goals from the Tykes’ Daniel Bogdanovich.

“You’ve got to start fighting and scrapping. There seemed a lack of that. We were not working hard enough and that goes for the whole team,” fumed Jones.

“We were off the pace. Perhaps there was a bit of fatigue, but you can look for any excuse you want. We are better than that.”

And Jones reserved particular criticism for his defence and the role they played in the visitors’ goals.

“We showed a lack of awareness defensively for the first 20 minutes and when you do that you get found out,” added Jones.

“We seem to be getting caught by the same ball all the time and the penny has got to drop with certain players.

“They were crazy goals to give away. It was straight through the heart of our defence.

“People have got to be aware and get in position. Our passing wasn’t right, our movement was off. We did not really have any sustained pressure of cutting them open and getting wide of them.

“We just looked void of everything. There was a slow tempo to us. When we did pick it up a bit and put them under pressure we could not get the goal and it is unusual for us not to score.”

Sousa’s delight at win over ‘14 men’ (Feb 21) 10:0

PAULO SOUSA’S run-in with referees continues after he described the win over Derby as being achieved against 14 men.

Sousa would not go into detail – but it was clear he was far from happy with the performance of Somerset official Steve Tanner who sent off Jay McEveley for the hosts and Gorka Pintado for the Swans, failing to prevent an 18-man brawl.

It is not the first time the Swans boss has hit out at the standard of refereeing in the Championship – but he praised his players for the effort to come out on top and keep play-off ambitions strong.

“This was like playing against 14 men – but we had 12 men because our supporters were outstanding. They helped us once more because this was very difficult for us,” said Sousa.

“It was difficult to play on this pitch and we played against 14 – but we got what we deserved. I was looking for our spirit and we saw it. We are strong, we are well organised and we are hard to beat – and we can choose the right moments to win.

“We know we can score more, we know we have to have more quality in some of our decision-making – but I am proud.”

When asked specifically about the sending-off decisions, Sousa insisted he did not want to say any more apart from: “We played against 14.”

He did add he was disappointed with Derby’s approach and that his players – like red card culprit Pintado – need greater control of their emotions.

But he insisted his team have shown the maturity they need to continue their play-off push, adding: “We should not be afraid of anybody.

“It’s hard to beat us, we’ve reinforced that now. Expectations come with our results but we know our position and what we want to achieve.

“We have a winning mentality and there is a long way to go – but we have stayed in the top six for a long time and we have shown our maturity.”

Sousa admitted Ferrie Bodde will soon be ready for a start after he was named on the bench at Pride Park, but there will be scans on hamstring victims Andrea Orlandi and Joe Allen this morning.

Reds face tough test up north (Feb 19) 10:00

LLANELLI travel to face Bala Town on Sunday and know they face a test of character and resolve if they are to maintain their four-point advantage at the top of the table.

The newcomers have done exceptionally well under manager Colin Caton, who was named manager of the month for January, and have won seven of their nine previous games.

And Reds boss Andy Legg is expecting a physical battle in North Wales.

"I know they're a physical side, I saw that from when we played them at home," he said.

"They've done well for their first year in the Welsh Premier and a lot of sides have found it tough up there this year."

The Reds will have to be at their best if they are to return with a win and there is a worry over goalscorer Rhys Griffiths, who had to be replaced by Legg in last week's 5-0 win over Porthmadog.

Caton said: "It's a massive game and we are looking forward to it. They'll be wary of us and we are on quite a good run at the moment so there is no pressure on us."

Angel Rangel signs new deal with Swansea City (Feb 19) 10:00

SWANSEA CITY star Angel Rangel has confirmed he has signed a one-year contract extension with the club.

And, adamant all has been forgiven and forgotten after his recent transfer stand-off, the Spaniard immediately insisted he is now fully focused on helping to bring Premiership football to the Liberty Stadium.

Rangel, widely considered to be one of the Swans’ prize assets, triggered an automatic extension to his current deal when he made his 23rd start of the season against Plymouth on Tuesday.

The 27-year-old, who signed from Spanish minnows Terrassa two and a half years ago, is now contracted to stay in South Wales until the summer of 2011.

While the extension, which has been well documented in recent months, will come as little surprise to Swans fans, the fact Rangel was so happy to sign it might. It was only three weeks ago that the highly-rated right-back publicly blasted chairman Huw Jenkins, accusing him of stalling his career by rejecting a deadline-day bid from Premiership regulars Fulham.

Suggesting he was wrong to speak out, Rangel claims any fall-out from that day is now in the past, though. And, with his short-term future secured, he is determined to make the most of life at the Liberty.

“I am very happy to sign the extension,” he declared. “It was never a concern for me.

“I have always said that Swansea gave me my opportunity in British football and I am so grateful for it. Now I see the opportunity to reach the Premiership with Swansea, which has always been my aim.

Wrexham chairman Geoff Moss set to leave club (Feb 19) 10:00

Wrexham chairman Geoff Moss looks set to carry out his threat to resign from his position at the north Wales club.

Moss is expected to announce his resignation when he makes a statement regarding the club's "board situation" at 1200 GMT on Friday.

A week ago, Moss said he was "deadly serious" about his warning to quit because of abusive criticism from fans.

When contacted by BBC Wales Sport on Thursday, the millionaire businessman refused to make any comment.

The relationship between Moss and certain fans has soured over recent weeks, culminating in the chairman asking police to investigate following what he calls "very offensive" messages from some supporters.

"There comes a point when you think, do I need this any more? The answer is, I don't think so," said Moss last week.

Businessman Moss took sole control of Wrexham after buying out the 50% stake owned by former chairman Neville Dickens in 2008.

The pair rescued the club from administration in 2006, and Moss has reportedly invested more than £4m of his own money to keep the club afloat.

He also played an instrumental role in persuading former Wales striker Dean Saunders to take over as manager in October 2008.

"What the fans should ask themselves is 'who's been funding the wages over the past two months when we've had no games because of the bad weather'," said Moss, who is also the chairman of Super League side Crusaders.

But he stressed that he had no intention of leaving Wrexham "in the lurch".

"I would see it as a retreat over the next few months," he said. "I'm definitely going to retreat... without a shadow of doubt."

Sage takes over at Bridgend Town(Feb 18) 20:00
BRIDGEND Town Football Club have turned to Mark Sage to pull them out of trouble in MacWhirter Welsh League Division One.
The former Garw star, who also took in a spell with Bridgend, has taken over at the Brewery Field from Drewe Phillips.
However, Bridgend have created a new post for Phillips - that of director of football - and he will sit on a six-strong board.
The other board members are Steve Clark, Hopkin Joseph, Colin Mawer, Geraint Phillips and Andrew Smith.

“We decided it would be in the best interests of the club for Drewe Phillips to vacate team matters and join the board of directors,” said Bridgend Town chairman Steve Clark.

“The last thing we wanted was to lose Drewe, as he has so much Welsh League experience. He will continue to work on football matters with Mark Sage as team manager.

“The move has been in the offing for sometime, and it was accelerated after losing to Betws on Friday night.”

While Mr Clark accepts that Bridgend are in a dogfight to dodge the five-strong drop zone, he is confident they have the resources to remain in the top flight.

“Consistency has been the main problem for the team this season, and I think it will help to have one dedicated manager as opposed to two. Mark (Sage) has a free hand to bring in his own back-up staff, and all in all I am confident he can keep us in the first division.

Adam Matthews ready to pledge his future to Cardiff City (Feb 18) 20:00

WALES teen star Adam Matthews is ready to commit his future to Cardiff City.

The highly-rated 18-year-old was linked with an Aaron Ramsey-type move away from the Bluebirds, with Arsenal and Manchester United keen to land him.

But Matthews believes he can bolster his own Wales international ambitions by remaining with Dave Jones’ side, where he reckons he would get more regular first-team football.

Matthews wasn’t picked for Tuesday night’s draw with West Brom and will probably have to sit out Saturday’s home clash with Barnsley.

But he still reckons he is more likely to get the nod at right-back with City than he would be as part of a star-studded squad in the Premier League.

Welsh footballer given four red cards - in one game! (Feb 17) 15:00

A Caernarfon district league cup match against saw one player receive FOUR red cards.

Ricky Broadley of Mountain Rangers received the cards in the course of the tie against Penrhyndeudraeth.

The 29-year-old stamped on an opponent in the course of a 64th minute brawl on the pitch and was promptly sent off as his side trailed 2-0.

He went on to receive further red cards for first arguing with the referee, then throwing water over him, and finally confronting him angrily in the clubhouse following the match.

Broadley, a former Bangor City striker, was also hit with a £75 fine by the North Wales Coast FA.

It is not the first time he has been in hot water with footballing authorities: Broadley has previously been banned for life from playing Sunday League football, and he was lucky to escape the same sanction this time around.

The player - who had received one red and three yellow cards in his previous 10 matches with Mountain Rangers - claimed he had been punched and put in a headlock before the stamping incident. His club had already confirmed that he will not be playing for them again.

Referee John Owen sent off three other players during the match, which finished 3-0 to Penrhyndeudraeth.

Caerleon win again and shock Barry Town (Feb 17) 15:00

TWO goals from Danny Cueto and another by Dale Clark earned relegation-threatened Caerleon a shock, 3-1 Division One success against Barry Town at Jenner Park.

The home side rallied by netting in the last few minutes, but the visitors held on for only their third victory of the season – but their second in four days following last Saturday’s 3-2 home triumph over Bryntirion Athletic.

However the win fails to move manager Lee Relish’s men off the foot of the table, although they could achieve that this Saturday if they beat hosts West End and other results go their way.

Record breaking win for the Steelmen (Feb 16) 23:00

Port Talbot set a new WPL winning record tonight beating Cefn Druids 7-0 at Victoria Road, beating their previous best of a 7-1 win over Caernarfon. They also set a season's worst record in that despite their huge win it was watched by their lowest crowd of the season, just 127 turned up to watch the game.

Daniel Thomas started off the scoring in the 36' and Lee John doubled the lead 3' later. Liam McCreesh made it 3-0 on 42' and the game was over as a contest when McCreesh scored his 2nd and Port's 4th in first half injury time.

Port started the second half as they finished the first by scoring goal number 5 with Dan Thomas's 2nd of the game on 46'. Ten minutes later Dan Thomas scored his hat-trick to make it 6-0. On 72' Lee John scored his 2nd of the night and Port's 7th to record their best ever win in the WPL.

Tonight's 3 points set's up Port nicely for their assault on 3rd place and a crack at Europe next season, they are just 3 points behind Aberystwyth in 3rd but have 3 games in hand, and just 2 points behind champions Rhyl but with 2 games in hand of them.

Keeper Roberts a Surprise Starter for Steelmen (Feb 16) 11:45

Former Llanelli and Barry Town goalkeeper will be a surprise starter in goal for Port Talbot Town this evening, when the Steelmen host Elements Cefn Druids at the GenQuip Stadium.
Roberts retired from the game in November 2008 through injury after 69 Welsh Premier League appearances, but he has signed for the Steelmen as emergency cover for this evening's match. Regular incumbent Lee Kendall is unavailable just for tonight, so Roberts will deputise.
Roberts boasts a wealth of experience having won the Championship with Llanelli as well as playing for a number of years in the English pyramid. He also played in the Welsh Cup final at Newtown against Bangor City, when a pitch invasion from behind his goal, marred the afternoon in May 2008. Previous back-up 'keeper Tony Pennock joined Welsh League Aberaman so Roberts, who lives in Barry, has answered Mark Jones' SOS call. As a player whose last contract was cancelled, under FIFA rules, the 30-year old was allowed to sign for any club outside the transfer window.
Roberts will be delighted to have the experienced centre-backs Lee Surman and Matthew Rees in front of him for his debut, as the duo return following suspension. Leigh deVulgt will move back to right-back, with Nicky Holland dropping out. Karl Lewis was suffering with illness on Friday so he is a doubt.
Jones and Waynne Phillips are likely to be without Ricky Wright and Dan Barnett who are both carrying knocks while Josh Russell and Drew Wickens are also unavailable. Phillips is also likely to miss out himself while he continues to recover from a minor operation. Chris Buxton is likely to be drafted into the squad after missing out on the sixteen on Friday.

Swansea ready for 'biggest week of season' (Feb 16) 11:45

Captain Garry Monk says Swansea are prepared for a crucial week as the promotion chasers gear up to battle at struggling Plymouth and Derby.
"We said in the dressing room it's the biggest week of the season," he said.
"We can either extend the gap on the teams below us or be dragged back into the chasing pack.
"It won't be pretty at Plymouth [on Tuesday], the pitch looks like a cow field and they're expecting heavy rain, but we've shown the character for it."
The Swans said that any disappointment they felt at conceding a late equaliser against Championship leaders Newcastle after an impressive performance on Saturday has been set aside.
"There was an initial disappointment with two points dropped after a dominant performance, but we're all focused on Plymouth then on to Derby," Monk told BBC Sport Wales.
"It will be a completely different approach [from Newcastle] at Home Park, we'll try to grind it out.
"[Plymouth's ex-Swansea striker] Rory Fallon is a big, physical player. We know each other inside out.
"The first thing is to match them in the battle - we're not just a pretty side playing pretty football.
"If we can pick up four points [this week] it would be great, but it's hard to set targets. We just go into each game and try to win.
"Every game is a big one now, but if we can get a good points tally away from home it will make it a lot easier.
"The good thing is that the teams below us are all playing each other so a few will definitely drop points."

Suspension-hit Martyrs aiming to revive season (Feb 16) 11:45

MERTHYR Tydfil head to Leamington tonight (7.45pm) wondering just how they didn’t win against rock bottom Rugby Town on Saturday.

The Martyrs went into that game hoping to push themselves up the Zamaretto League with a morale-boosting win against the league’s whipping boys.

But they needed an 89th-minute equaliser from Kris Leek to salvage a point for the cash-strapped club.

It was just reward for an improved second-half performance.

But it was still a case of two points lost for a Martyrs side who have battled a 10-point deduction for going into administration last summer.

Garry Shephard’s suspension-ridden squad now travel to Leamington’s New Windmill Ground aiming to get their season back on track.

But thoughts of the play-offs now seem further away with the Martyrs 13 points adrift of fifth-placed Cambridge City.

The Martyrs have not won since January 26 but they have been boosted by the news that Leamington’s 24-goal striker Mark Bellingham is out after injuring a hamstring.

Leamington go into the game off the back of a 1-0 win against Cambridge City last weekend, substitute Chris Murphy grabbing a last-minute winner.

The Warwickshire club lie eighth in the league and, with games in hand on teams above them, are targeting the play-offs.

City boss Jones admits fears over “running out of players” (Feb 16) 11:45

DAVE Jones admits his biggest fear in the Championship run-in is “running out of players.”
Bluebirds boss Jones is hoping to field an unchanged line-up for tonight’s home clash against promotion rivals West Brom with Gavin Rae and Jay Bothroyd both in line to start.
Aaron Wildig has a back problem, but also has a good chance of playing.
But the Bluebirds are hurting badly because of injuries and the medical staff are working from match-to-match to get players fit enough to start.
“My biggest fear is that we will run out of players,” said Jones.
“A lack of bodies is always going to be a worry. That’s been our fear for the last three years but we are asking this bunch to go again.
“It’s no coincidence that every time we have faltered at the end of a season it’s down to a lack of bodies.
“There is a lot of football to be played and we have a small squad.
“The players would rather play matches than train. In our situation now and again there will be a game where we don’t perform at all.
The big concern is whether players can overcome injuries quicker than normal,” he said.
“That’s the way it will be from now until the end of the season.
“Most of the time will be recovery because of the number of matches we have. Now we have to go again.
“It was a big test for this squad to get to the transfer window. We got there and now we have to drive on.”

Swansea are getting better says striker David Cotterill (Feb 15) 04:45

David Cotterill has sent out a warning to his Championship rivals that Swansea City are still improving.
The Wales international scored in the Swans 1-1 draw with Newcastle on Saturday to extend their unbeaten run to nine and take them to fourth.
But he admitted the result "felt like a defeat" after Andy Carroll struck for the visitors three minutes from time.
"We're definitely the best footballing side in the league and we've shown that again today," said Cotterill.
"We are getting a lot better and we are getting chances and it's up to us to take a few more.
"We are playing well and not low in confidence and we've got to keep believing in ourselves."
Cotterill, who claimed his third goal in a Swansea shirt since completing a permanent transfer from Sheffield United in January, says the Swans need to start killing teams off if they are to realise their Premier League ambition.
"We dominated from start to finish like we do most games here," he added.
"It's great credit to our players that we played a top team like Newcastle and outplayed them.
"But when you play against a quality side like that you've got to be careful.
"With Andy Carroll being so big he can be a threat and they managed to get the ball into the box and it was a good header but we feel let down that we let three points slip."

Kris Leek rescues a point for Merthyr (Feb 15) 04:40

KRIS LEEK rescues a point for Merthyr with an 89th-minute goal against bottom side Rugby  but it was no more than Merthyr deserved for an improved second-half performance.
Once again, Merthyr were without four players through suspension as well as player manager Garry Shephard, and for 45 minutes they struggled to find any cohesion in attack, with the visitors looking far more of a threat.
Two minutes before the break Ross Oulton evaded the Merthyr defence, before firing past goalkeeper Andrew Delve from a tight angle. The re-start saw Merthyr more fluent in the final third and the chances started coming, although Rugby had an opportunity early on when Delve saved well with his feet from Matt Gearing.
On 56 minutes both Scott Armitage and Tariq Khalil saw goalbound shots blocked by defenders.
A superb save from Rugby goalkeeper Andrew Stevens denied Armitage’s speculative effort on 62 minutes, before Leek saw an acrobatic shot fly just wide.
Stevens turned another Leek shot onto the woodwork on 74 minutes and for all their pressure in the second half it looked as though Merthyr would be denied any reward.
A move on 89 minutes changed that. Paul Keddle was impeded in midfield but with referee Neil Radford playing the advantage, Marcus Griffiths rifled in a ball across the face of goal which Leek was able to convert at the far post.

Carmarthen looked the better in goalless draw (Feb 15) 04:35

ALTHOUGH they will be disappointed to have dropped two places in the Welsh Premier following yesterday’s result at Bastion Gardens, Prestatyn would have been relieved to pick up a point against a fired-up Carmarthen.
The Old Gold created the better chances throughout and with sharper finishing would have earned the win they desperately need in their battle to finish in the top 10.
Prestatyn’s best chance came after seven minutes, when a lovely succession of passes between Michael Parker, Neil Gibson and Andy Moran left Steve Rogers with just keeper Neil Thomas to beat.
But the striker’s somewhat inadequate shot was comfortably saved.
Moran volleyed wide after Gibson won a header in the box but otherwise it was all Carmarthen.
Early in the second period Steve Hoult’s firm strike was well held by Thomas, then at the other end Hill-Dunt went down smartly to gather a shot from Richard Hughes, who made a dazzling run from his inside his own half before letting fly.
Carmarthen should have scored when Paul Fowler’s cross from the right eluded the home defence but Danny Thomas failed to hit the target.
The hosts then raised their game, Parker and Ian Griffiths both hitting decent long range efforts which Thomas was equal to.
But Carmarthen always looked the likelier scorers, Thomas’ back-post header kept out by Hill-Dunt.

He has returned to his spiritual home at the seaside and has been his usual influential self for Alan Morgan's outfit. During the club's four League games in the month, Sherbon scooped the Man of the Match award three times, which emphasizes his importance in the squad.

Bala's Caton scoops the WPL Manager of the Month (Feb 15) 04:30

The Principality Welsh Premier League Manager of the Month for January is Bala Town's Colin Caton, who scoops the award for the first time in his short top-flight career. The Bala boss is enjoying life in the top-flight after he guided the Lakesiders to the Cymru Alliance title last season. Although there weren't many games played in the month due to the adverse weather, Caton still recorded a 100% winning record with successive league triumphs away from home and a Welsh Cup Round 4 win at Maes Tegid. It is the latter which is most impressive, given the fact that he has guided Bala into the Welsh Cup Quarter Finals for the first time in their 120 year history. A brace from Ricky Evans saw the Caton's men progress at the expense of fellow Welsh Premier outfit Caersws.
In the Principality Welsh Premier, Caton guided the club to wins over Porthmadog at Y Traeth (2-0), with goals from Warren Duckett and Ricky Evans and then a first win of the month against Caersws at the Rec by 3-1.
"With the recent new signings we have high hopes for the team and look forward to watching them storm ahead towards the top of the table. Nurturing latent talent is at the very essence of the Premier League and is the reason why Principality is committed to supporting grass roots sport."

GOYTRE UNITED moved eight points clear at the top of the first division of the Macwhirter Welsh League when they secured a 3-1 victory at Dinas Powys.

Dinas controlled the opening quarter, taking the lead through Tony Wallace and then being awarded a penalty which they missed.

That miss seemed to inspire Goytre who levelled through Darren Lyons. They went in front when Richard Ryan scored a penalty, and completed the success with a Darren Griffiths goal.

Caldicot Town, who started the day in second place, slipped up losing 3-0 at home to Taff’s Well and they were joined on the 35-point mark by Afan Lido, who edged to a 2-1 triumph at Ely Rangers.

Ton Pentre could have made it three clubs on 35 points, but they managed only a 1-1 draw at Aberaman Athletic.

Liam Beattie gave Aberaman the lead on 14 minutes and Wayne Antoniazzi levelled six minutes into the second period.

Mid-table Cardiff Corries swept to a convincing 4-0 home victory over Swansea side West End with Richie Veale grabbing a brace of goals and Rhys Yates and Nathan Walsh also scoring.

Elsewhere, Caerleon squeezed home 3-2 against Bryntirion Athletic and Cambrian & Clydach beat Garden Village 2-0 with Barry Town contesting a goalless draw with Pontardawe Town.

Cwmbran Celtic took another step towards promotion from the second division when they defeated Llangeinor 2-1 in a fiercely contested match.

They are now three points clear at the top of the table of Penrhiwceiber Rangers, who slipped up 2-1 at Porth.

But Cwmbran Town are continuing to struggle and they crashed 3-0 at Llwydcoed, for whom Tomos Morris, Ross Williams, and Christian Varden all netted.

A goal by Aaron Pewtner gave Newport YMCA a 1-0 success at Ammanford, while Newcastle Emlyn beat Caerau Ely 2-0, courtesy of Anthony Owens and Owen Thomas.

Pontypridd Town celebrated going three points clear at the top of Division Three with a 5-0 home drubbing of Pontyclun. Among the scorers was debutant Geza Hajgato, the former Cardiff City player, who has signed from Goytre United.

Also on the scoresheet, were Lewis Waite (two), Richard Jago and Ian Traylor.

Second placed Corus were held to a 1-1 home draw by fellow promotion contenders Aberbargoed Buds, while Newport Civil Service moved into seventh place with a 1-0 success at Troedyrhiw.

South Gower are still in serious relegation danger after crashing 6-1 at home to Abertillery Bluebirds and Pentwyn Dynamo are in jeopardy of going out of the league as well after they lost 3-0 at home to Cwmaman Institute.

Neath step up a gear to see off Caersws (Feb 14) 18:10

MUCH-CHANGED Neath revived their faltering campaign after substitute Chris Llewellyn put paid to basement strugglers Caersws in a hard-fought affair at the Recreation Ground.

Following back-to-back defeats on the road in the past week, manager Andy Dyer responded with a shake-up to his line-up in a bid to lift the growing pressure.

And the visitors returned with the spoils to rekindle their aspirations of European football this summer, the decisive moment coming midway through the second half when Llewellyn came off the bench to fire home a cross from the left by Ashley Evans.

The Eagles, however, were made to battle by a plucky Caersws side who, belying their lowly league status, were up for the task on a heavy surface.

After a frustrating few weeks for Dyer, his side almost made the perfect start when Evans broke through in the first minute but fired wide.

Keiron Howard sent an overhead kick over the bar on the half hour while seeing another effort saved by Dave Jones, but generally chances were in short supply in a first-half deadlock.

Carlos Castan volleyed just past the post four minutes after the break from Kristian James’ cross, before former Wrexham striker Llewellyn pounced for the game’s only goal on 69 minutes.

Caersws were in no mood to surrender, though. Mark Griffiths saw a header cleared off the line on 71 minutes while two minutes from time, Jacob Smith went agonisingly close.

Newport County shut out Chelmsford challenge (Feb 14) 18:00

COUNTY’S marvellous season continued with a hard-earned point against their nearest challengers Chelmsford on a freezing Essex afternoon.

The Exiles are still 18 points clear at the top of Blue Square South and with two games in hand on Chelmsford the title is surely on its way to South Wales.

Three days after a hard-fought but convincing victory at Eastleigh, County had to play without star striker Craig Reid who tweaked a hamstring in Hampshire, and without the 22-goal hitman Newport boss Dean Holdsworth had to juggle his squad.

County started brightly, but most of the first-half chances went to the home side with Simon Thomas, on loan from Crystal Palace, squandering a great opportunity on 12 minutes when he headed wide when unmarked in front of goal.

County thought they had a claim for a penalty on 22 minutes when Charlie Henry’s close-range shot appeared bound for the net but referee Paul Forrester probably adjudged that Marlon Patterson was unable to get his hand out of the way. County’s inability to make possession stick in the opposing half of the field meant that they had to deal with some speedy breaks from the home side and the Newport goal had an amazing escape on 41 minutes.

Man-of-the match Paul Cochlin cleared off the line from Thomas and after an almighty scramble City winger Anthony Cook appeared certain to score but his effort from no more than eight yards struck the bar.

Holdsworth admitted he had some strong words for his side at half-time, but they certainly responded with a massive effort after the break.

The best chance of the second period fell to substitute Dave Gilroy who made an almost immediate impact after replacing Danny Rose on the hour and he forced a brilliant save from City keeper Ashley Harrison.

Chelmsford were desperate to snatch the winner, but County’s defence dealt with their attacks well and the point left Holdsworth a very happy manager.

Llanelli boss Legg’s good news on and off the pitch (Feb 13) 06:40

LIFE is just about as good as it gets at the moment for Llanelli player-manager Andy Legg.

Llanelli have won eight on the trot and enjoy a four-point lead over The New Saints going into tomorrow’s Welsh Premier visit from lowly Porthmadog.

But that pales into insignificance following a visit to his cancer specialist in midweek.

“It’s been a good week for me personally as my consultant has informed me I am out of remission,” said Legg. “I don’t need another check up until five years down the line. They’ll still keep an eye on me, but it completed a great week after we won back-to-back matches at Newtown and Airbus.”

A win against Tomi Morgan’s strugglers would ice the cake for Legg. But he recalls two years ago when Porthmadog were one of only three clubs to lower the Reds colours as they stormed to the championship.

“We’ll treat Porthmadog with the respect they deserve. I well remember that defeat and we don’t want a repeat,” he said.

Main challengers Saints, unbeaten in 22 matches at Park Hall, face a test against Bangor , who have won six of their last seven.

Bangor have not beaten the Saints in nine matches, but boss Neville Powell said: “We’ll go there with confidence. Of course, it will be difficult, but the way we’re playing, who knows?”

Port Talbot come unstuck at Park Avenue (Feb 13) 06:40

Aberystwyth climbed back into the top three with a 2-1 win at home to Port Talbot last night.

Teenager Ryan Fraughan scored the opener after 20 minutes before Luke Bowen doubled the lead.

Liam McCreesh pulled a goal back for the visitors.

Bala moved up to fifth with a 2-1 win against Cefn Druids. A goal seven minutes from time by substitute Neil Fisher decided the outcome, after Ricky Evans had put Bala ahead with John Rush levelling for Druids.

Welshpool and Airbus UK fought out a goalless draw.

Red's boss Legg wary of Porthmadog (Feb 12) 10:40

WELSH Premier League leaders Llanelli enjoy a four-point advantage over The New Saints going into Sunday's home encounter with struggling Porthmadog.

Back-to-back victories at Newtown and Airbus UK have strengthened the Reds' title hopes.

Legg's side are going from strength to strength and have eight straight wins under their belt, but Legg will remind his team that Porthmadog still pose a threat.

In 2007-08, the season Llanelli claimed their first title, lowly Porthmadog won 2-1 at Stebonheath Park, one of only three defeats the Reds suffered all season.

"It proves you can't take any team lightly in this division," said Legg.

"I was really proud of the lads at Airbus as it was a very hard match and we showed tremendous energy and character to pull through, and it's that kind of display we will need for the remainder of the season.

"We just have to keep going. We have got ourselves into a great situation but there's still a lot of football to be played."

Llanelli are boosted by the return of Antonio Corbisiero.

Geza Hajgato signs for Pontypridd Town (Feb 12) 10:40

FORMER Cardiff City youth player Geza Hajgato has signed for Pontypridd Town.

Hajgato has made the move from Goytre United to Pontypridd as they strive for success in MacWhirter Welsh Football League Division Three.

Tomorrow, Pontypridd are at home against Pontyclun, while second-placed Corus Steel play challengers Aberbargoed Buds.

Cardiff Bay Harlequins, who are third in Division Two, have a home match against Tredegar Town tomorrow.

In Division One, Barry Town play Pontardawe Town at Jenner Park, while defending champions Aberaman Athletic are at home against Ton Pentre.

Aberaman are now lying sixth, while Rhondda Bulldogs Ton are third.

Alyn Jones is likely to be missing from Ton Pentre’s team, having been sent off after 16 minutes of the 2-1 win against Ely Rangers.

Ton Pentre came from behind to beat Ely thanks to an own goal plus the winner from Tom Davies. Liam Hutchinson’s corner was guided into goal by Davies after several shots were blocked near the line.

Ton Pentre were 2-1 ahead after 34 minutes.

Aberaman followed a 4-1 win against Taffs Well away with a 3-1 midweek defeat against Bryntirion Athletic.

Manager Leighton James has signed experienced goalkeeper Tony Pennock as he looks to rebuild, while Simon Truman, Samir Misbah and Nathan Cadette are in midfield. Mark Greedy offers a goal threat in attack.

Martyrs bidding to have a Rugby ball (Feb 12) 10:40

HAVING started the season at the foot of the Zamaretto Premier Division, Merthyr Tydfil head into tomorrow’s home clash with Rugby Town (3pm) with one eye still on the play-offs.

Rugby have taken up residence at the foot of the table with just one league win all season.

But having wiped out their 10-point pre-season deduction and moved out of the relegation zone, Merthyr have not fully given up hope of a top-five finish. And with teams around them still to visit Penydarren Park, assistant manager Danny Carter is focused on climbing the table.

“We are optimistic for the remaining games, especially at home,” said Carter. “We will look to improve our position as much as possible, with the remaining fixtures.”

The Martyrs will face a Rugby team who have taken just seven points from their 22 matches to date and are rock bottom of the league.

Merthyr Tydfil go into the game off the back of a 3-1 defeat away to Banbury United.

Merthyr will have to make do without suspended quartet Dean Clarke, Jamie Rewbury, Cortez Belle and Simon Gregory.

Influential player-manager Garry Shephard will miss at least the next month, but Matthew Driscoll, sent off against Banbury, can play against Rugby before serving a two-match suspension.

Shepherd is determined to look at the suspensions in a positive light, saying: “They give the opportunity for other players to come in, and stamp their mark in the position.”

Wheels will stay on County's title drive (Feb 12) 10:40

NEWPORT County head to their nearest rivals at the top of the Blue Square South tomorrow, knowing victory will send them even further into the distance.

A 4-1 midweek win at Eastleigh moved Dean Holdsworth’s side 18 points clear of tomorrow’s hosts Chelmsford City, with the added bonus of two games in hand.

Striker Sam Foley helped himself to a brace in midweek and issued a warning to County’s rivals that they have no intention of easing up.

“There is no chance of the wheels falling off this wagon,” said Foley. “They are firmly on and its a good place to be at the moment.

“We all know we are a scalp that teams want, but we are firmly focused on what we have to do and nobody is looking further then the next game.

“The club is heading in the right direction both on and off the field and they deserve everything they get. “There is no comfort zone here, everybody is working together and pulling in the right direction.”

With five away matches in the next six games, the next month will prove vital to County’s assault on the title.

“It’s going to be a tough month,” admitted Foley.

“But we are playing some great football and are confident that we can perform anywhere against anyone and that is not being over confident. It’s just being confident in our own ability as a team.”

Holdsworth continues to take nothing for granted and is determined to keep his players’ eyes on the prize.

“Nobody is going to just lay down and give us these points,” he said, ahead of the clash at Melbourne Stadium.

“They will all be out to beat the team leading the division and I know my players have nothing on their minds but the next game.

“They can be history makers and not many players can do that in their entire careers. But they also know that they absolutely have nothing in their hands at the moment to say how well they have done to date and on that basis they and I will carry on until the job is finished.” Chelmsford, managed by former Southend midfielder Glenn Pennyfather, go into the game on the back of a midweek win over Dorchester.

Bluebirds’ Dave Jones feared 10-point deduction (Feb 12) 10:40

CARDIFF CITY boss Dave Jones has revealed for the first time that he fears the Bluebirds could be plunged into administration and a dreaded 10-point deduction.

City currently sit fourth in the Championship, but have been given just 28 days to settle the rest of an unpaid £2.7m tax bill.

With the financial future of the club in turmoil, Jones said the spectre of his side being docked 10 precious points has haunted him.

And, despite his side’s excellent campaign, Jones said the fear of relegation was still motivating him.

But, with the Bluebirds due to face Chelsea tomorrow in the FA Cup, Jones said he had received assurances Cardiff would not be going into administration.

Europe for Bala Town? (Feb 11) 08:40

COULD Bala Town be looking at a stunning European qualification from their first season at Welsh Premier League level?
Not a chance according to team boss Colin Caton - but victory tomorrow night (Friday) could fire the men from Maes Tegid into the top-five of the Principality Building Society Welsh Premier League, just three points adrift of the European qualification spots.
The champions of the Welsh Premier League qualify for the UEFA Champions League, while the second and third placed teams qualify for the first qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League.
A place in the Europa League is also awarded to the winners of the Welsh Cup.
Bala have already secured their spot in the last-eight of the Welsh Cup, with lower league Afan Lido the visitors at the end of the month.
Bala supremo Colin Caton is not buying into the possibility of a European adventure.
When asked if he was thinking about Europe, Caton quipped: “Only on holiday!
“I will be going to Spain, but I won’t be playing football there!”
Bala will be aiming to maintain their stunning run of form when they go to lowly Elements Cefn Druids tomorrow night.
With four wins in a row to open 2010 - and three victories over Druids already this season - all of the pointers are in Bala’s favour for another victory.
But Caton anticipates a tough test and he said: “Druids are suffering with financial restraints, but Waynne (Phillips) and Lee (Jones) have done a fantastic job there.
“They’re always going to be well organised and they’re a good footballing side.”
Bala go into the game with a number of key figures out through injury.
Goalkeeper Leon Bimpson has been in quite brilliant form this season, but he is out for the visit to Plaskynaston Lane with a thigh strain.
Matthew Boswell will replace him between the posts.
Striker John Toner is also out of contention with a thigh strain and the influential Owain Roberts is another injury victim.
While Caton believes Europe is beyond his squad, he has set his players a target to ensure the club remains in the Welsh Premier League next season.
The top-10 are almost certain to retain their top flight status for next season and with 13 games to play, eighth placed Bala are eight points clear of Deryn Brace’s Carmarthen Town, in 11th.
“I think we need 11 points now and three wins and two draws should do,” added Caton.

Another win for Newport County (Feb 11) 08:20

LEAGUE leaders County powered to a spectacular Blue Square South success in Hampshire to knock the stuffing out of play-off chasing Eastleigh for the second time this season.

In September the Exiles shot down the Spitfires with a 5-1 win at Newport Stadium and they almost repeated the feat.

Craig Reid gave Newport the lead from the penalty spot in the 20th minute after man-of-the-match Charlie Henry had been brought down by Ian Oliver. Two minutes later Henry set up Sam Foley.

Eastleigh pulled a goal back through Staforde Palmer and the home side put Newport under pressure after the break, but once again the Exiles came good with Henry striking home from the penalty spot after Tom Jordan, son of Joe, brought down Foley.

In the 82nd minute Foley struck again with a header from a Henry free-kick to leave County and their ecstatic fans celebrating their 20th win of the season

Wrexham derby trip postponed against crisis club Chester (Feb 11) 08:20

WREXHAM’S Blue Square derby trip to crisis club Chester on Sunday has been postponed.

The local authority have served a prohibition notice on the club banning the opening of the Deva Stadium to spectators after police refused to man it.

The council’s action comes in the wake of Chester’s away match against Forest Green Rovers on Wednesday night being postponed due to money-related matters.

It is understood Chester could now face expulsion from the Football Conference for failing to meet their fixtures having already started the season with a 25-point penalty.

According to the police, they have taken a hard line because of previous difficulties with the club.

A statement read: “Chester City Football Club previously went into administration.

“As a result, money owed by the club to Chester Police to pay for the policing of previous football matches was not recovered.

“The club has had considerable notice of the policing requirements for this match against Wrexham.

“That deadline has now expired and no payment has been received.

“Chester Police will therefore not be in a position to provide police officers for this game.”

Wales can beat England, insists Aaron Ramsey (Feb 11) 08:20

AARON RAMSEY has delivered a tub-thumping Euro message to the Welsh public by declaring John Toshack’s young guns can beat England.

Arsenal starlet Ramsey, the teenage sensation Toshack will build his Euro 2012 qualifying team around, says he is thrilled by the draw.

And Ramsey reckons the side can put a smile on the face of an entire nation by shocking Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard and the rest of England’s superstars.

Ramsey beamed: “We know we can make a lot of people proud and happy. It is definitely possible to beat England, we go into every game thinking we can win.

“It’s so exciting. I’m a very proud Welshman. Playing against England is a derby and to finally qualify for something would be just massive for us.

“Our mentality will not be different against England. We will not sit back and go for the draw, we will be going for the win.”

Toshack’s Wales also meet Switzerland, Bulgaria and Montenegro in the battle to reach Poland and the Ukraine in 2012, his last qualifying campaign in charge.

Former Wales skipper Gary Speed also reckons Toshack’s team are capable of springing an upset on Fabio Capello’s World Cup hopefuls.

“Wales have a chance of beating England,” said Speed. “If it was Spain, France, Germany or Italy I wouldn’t be so sure. But because it’s England, and it will be a derby, anything can happen.”

But Llanelli did spurn a couple of opportunities in the first half, which they could have been left to rue.

Bluebirds ease to victory and now want success in court (Feb 10) 09:20

Cardiff City revived their Championship play-off push with a comfortable 2-0 victory over lowly club Peterborough.

Jay Bothroyd had hit the post before the striker set up Chris Burke to volley Cardiff into a 30th-minute lead.

Bothroyd was the provider again when Anthony Gerrard sealed the win late on as the Cardiff target man flicked on Peter Whittingham's superb free-kick.

Cardiff's Michael Chopra hit the post in the final 10 minutes but suffered blows to Stephen McPhail and Bothroyd.

The Irishman followed fellow midfielder Darcy Blake off the field injured as McPhail suffered a rib injury after a challenge from Chris Whelpdale to deepen Dave Jones' midfield crisis.

The Cardiff boss is already without Joe Ledley and Gavin Rae so to lose both ball-winners in the crucial engine room is a headache for Jones.

Then the influential Boyhroyd hobbled off with a twisted ankle to further weakened Cardiff's injury-hit squad.

But Jones would have been pleased that Cardiff made amends for recent disappointments against the division's bottom club.

Kuqi returns to haunt old club (Feb 10) 09:20

Shefki Kuqi returned to haunt his old club as Swansea City sealed their first win at Crystal Palace for 90 years.

The striker scored his first Swans goal since his January arrival as he fired in Andrea Orlandi's knock down.

Swansea's defence, the meanest in the division, held onto their lead to seal their 17th clean sheet this season and strengthened their play-off push.

Alan Lee and Kieran Djilali missed chances but could not rescue a point for Neil Warnock's in-form side.

Cash-strapped Palace had celebrated three successive wins since going into administration last month and had lost just three times at Selhurst Park in the league this season.

But it was the Palace old boy that returned to remind his former club what they are missing.

The Finnish international, making his first Swansea start since his free move from German side TuS Koblenz, fired in from close range after Orlandi headed down Nathan Dyer's right-wing cross.

Wrexham did at least stretch their unbeaten home record to five games.

Toshack to consult players over England game venue (Feb 9) 20:20

JOHN TOSHACK will ask his Wales stars where they want to play their mouthwatering Euro qualifying clash with England.

The debate where to face the old enemy is already raging after Sunday’s Euro 2012 draw pitted Toshack’s Wales against Fabio Capello’s Three Lions.

FAW bosses know they could pack out the 72,500 Millennium Stadium for the cross-border meeting – but Toshack has already been on record to suggest he would prefer vital home games to be played at the smaller club grounds at Cardiff and Swansea.

But fresh from attending Sunday’s draw in Warsaw, Toshack has insisted any decision will be delayed until after next month’s fixtures meeting.

And while accepting there will be financial pressure to play at a sell-out Millennium, Toshack claimed he will not ignore the views of his squad.

“We play Sweden next month and it will be interesting to get their view on things,” said Toshack yesterday as he reflected on the draw that sees Wales take on England, Switzerland, Bulgaria and Montenegro in a campaign that kicks off in September.

“It is early days at the moment and we first have the fixtures meeting before we can think about where we play.

“But I will definitely speak to the players and what they say will certainly influence any decision. After all, they are the ones who have to go and perform out there.

“There is the thought that playing it at a smaller ground like at Cardiff or Swansea would make it more intimidating. But we have got to take everything into consideration, including the financial side of things.

“The players have come through the last couple of years and they’ve started to have their own opinions on things and it will certainly be interesting to have their view on it.”

Bangor bury Rhyl bogey (Feb 8) 13:20

THE rapid decline of champions Rhyl continued at Farrar Road where a crowd of nearly 900 saw Bangor triumph over their arch rivals for the first time in five visits.

Neville Powell’s side have now harvested 18 points from the last possible 21 to clear a path towards qualification for next season’s super 12 league.

A superb delivery from new boy Eddie Jebb set up the Citizens’ 38th-minute opener for former Lilywhite Chris Garside, who ghosted in to head home at the far post.

Another former Belle Vue front runner, Jamie Reed, netted the second, three minutes later, from 20 yards, after some excellent approach work from lively Sion Edwards.

Edwards was rewarded for his endeavours with the third goal in the 65th minute, another former Rhyl striker, Lee Hunt, and Michael Johnson the orchestrator this time.

The visitors replied with a late Matty Williams penalty, but their frustration was evident as Phil Doran saw red for violent conduct with seconds remaining.

DERYN BRACE has always been a fierce defender of his players, but this performance was too much for the former Norwich City and Wrexham defender to bear.

Hoping for three rare home points against opponents who had not gained a point in their six previous league encounters, Brace looked on dumbfounded.

“I’m disappointed, not just with the result, but with the display of some of my players,” he said.

“The lack of quality and composure was alarming and some players are making it very easy to pick the team for next week.

“Yes, we are unbeaten this year but we needed three points today as nine points from nine home matches tells its own story.”

It looked promising for the hosts when former Cardiff City striker Danny Thomas (39) put them in front, but Steffan Edwards equalised in the second half.

Struggling Neath sunk by super-sub Thompson (Feb 8) 13:20

BIG-SPENDING Neath are reaching a crisis point in their campaign after just six points out of the last 18.

Manager Andy Dyer sees February as a possible defining month in the club’s aim to break into the top three so this was the worst possible start.

Nevertheless, the Neath boss took comfort from a vastly improved performance by his players, who were without sensational new on-loan striker Chris Jones, who suffered a severe facial injury against Cefn Druids.

“Obviously, I do not like losing football matches but from where we have been recently this was a much better performance,” he said.

“We haven’t done ourselves any favours recently but the players were reliable, solid and did their jobs well today, although we lacked a cutting edge.

“First half we battered them. We passed the ball well, forced nine corners but had nothing to show for it at half time.

“It’s horrible when you play well and get nothing from the game so I’m pleased we have a trip to Newtown on Tuesday to see if we can make amends.”

A brilliant volley from substitute Mike Thompson in the 55th minute separated the sides, although Bala’s Gethin Lloyd missed two fairly routine chances early on.

And John Toner headed wide from a good position after the break while Neil Fisher should have done better with his headed opportunity.

The win was Bala’s fourth on the trot, three of which were on the road, so manager Colin Caton was elated.

“When I was a player I never laid down and my teams don’t lie down either. I thought we created the four best chances and thoroughly deserved to win,” he said.

“We are on a fantastic run at the moment. It would be superb if we could get into next season’s super league and that’s our goal.”

Merthyr are denied their just reward (Feb 8) 13:20

THE scoreline hardly reflected the 90 minutes, but for all their efforts, a seriously-depleted Martyrs side came away from Banbury without reward.

Missing four starters through suspension as well as influential player-manager Garry Shephard with injury, Merthyr started the brighter. Against the run of play George Redknapp opened the scoring for the home side on 33 minutes but it was Banbury goalkeeper Joe Murrell who was the busiest man on the field.

Six minutes after the re-start Merthyr were level, Ceri Morgan sliding in at the far post to convert Steve Williams’ corner.

Murrell saved well from Williams  before the same player smashed a 20-yard free-kick against the United woodwork.

The game went away from Merthyr  on 74 minutes, when Matthew Driscoll received a second yellow card on 81 minutes the home side were awarded a penalty when Nabir Shariff was adjudged to have been tripped by Andrew Thomas.

David Stone converted the spot-kick and as Merthyr came forward Ollie Stanbridge made sure of the points for Banbury.

Swansea City 'have to keep up top standard' (Feb 8) 13:20

DAVID COTTERILL has called on his Swansea City team-mates to keep maintain their standards after the confidence returned to the Liberty side on Saturday.

After a month or so without hitting top gear, Swansea blew away the cobwebs with their comfortable and convincing win over Preston.

It was a result and a performance aided by an excellent showing from Cotterill, the 22-year-old scoring a superb opener before setting up Ashley Williams for the game’s second. But, as the Wales man reflected on a job well done against Darren Ferguson’s side, he warned the intensity of the race for the play-offs means Swansea can’t fall away from the standards they set themselves.

“I think it was a good performance, but we need to keep hitting those levels,” said Cotterill, whose permanent move from Sheffield United was formalised in the recent transfer window after initially arriving in South Wales on loan.

“We’ve not been at our best recently, but we stayed in the top six which is important – and getting the win here has meant there’s a few points between us and seventh now.

“So we have to use the confidence from this result and look to push on again, starting with Tuesday and Palace.

“There’s been a lot of talk about the lack of goals and its fair because we haven’t scored enough at times this season.

“But we’ve taken a step in the right direction, played well and got our goals so it’s up to us to keep building. And if we can hit the same kind of levels we showed against Preston we can do a lot in this league.”

Swans boss Paulo Sousa insisted the win was one of the best of his tenure, hailing it as a “complete performance.”

But he will have wait to see if full-back Angel Rangel will be fit for tomorrow night’s trip to Selhurst Park, the Spaniard missing Saturday’s win with an Achilles injury.

Rangel’s absence from the side had sparked rumours of a fall-out following his outburst against chairman Huw Jenkins after a potential move to Fulham was snubbed by the club. But Rangel insisted the injury was genuine and has pledged his commitment to Sousa’s side.

Wales boss John Toshack excited by Euro 2012 draw (Feb 7) 14:30

Wales boss John Toshack was happy with the result of Sunday's qualifying draw for the 2012 European Championships.
Their Pool G opponents will be England, Switzerland, Bulgaria and Montenegro.

"Drawing England will please all the Welsh fans - plenty of history there and we like nothing better than another chance against the old enemy!" he said.

"We have had recent experience against both Bulgaria and Montenegro, and Switzerland are a good mid-ranking European side."

The qualifying matches will begin in September 2010 and a meeting will be held soon between the five nations to discuss fixtures.

The nine pool winners plus the best runner up will qualify automatically for the finals, which will be hosted jointly by Poland and Ukraine.

While England start favourites to top Pool G, Toshack believes that Wales have an excellent chance of advancing from the group.

"I imagine that all three sides [Wales, Bulgaria and Switzerland] would feel that second place is possible, it will be up to us to try and go one better than that," Toshack added.

I know [England manager] Fabio Capello quite well, so will look forward to being able to pit our talents against a powerful England team later in the year."

The next time Wales and England meet will be the 100th international game between the two old rivals, although Wales have won on 14 occasions, with 21 draws and 64 wins for England.

Hat-trick means it’s Rich pickings for Goytre (Feb 7) 13:00

GOYTRE UNITED reached the semi-final of the Nathaniel Car Sales League Cup after a comfortable 4-1 victory over Cambrian & Clydach.

Prolific scorer Richard Ryan grabbed a hat-trick and Steve Conaty also netted.

Scott Seldon scored a consolation goal for Cambrian & Clydach.

Caldicot Town narrowed Goytre’s lead at the top of Division One after a 2-0 success at Garden Village, two second-half goals from Dan Rowberry and Gareth Cullimore clinching the points.

Caerleon are beginning to look doomed at the foot of the table after a 3-0 thumping at Afan Lido. Robbie Walters scored a brace of goals and Chris Pridham was also on target.

With five teams now going down from Division One, the match between Pontardawe and Bettws took on extra significance and after a ding-dong affair the points were shared in a 3-3 draw.

West End and Barry Town also shared six goals.

Strikes from Robert Blatchford, James Dixon and a penalty from Sam Small gave Barry a 3-0 half-time lead, but tenacious West End battled back and Kieran Callan, David Rimmer and Alex Chyrsanthau all netted.

Bridgend Town, just one place above the drop zone, grabbed vital points as they battled to a 2-1 triumph at Dinas Powys.

Cwmbran Celtic showed their title credentials in Division Two, brushing aside Ammanford in a 4-0 whitewash.

Luke Sallis scored a brace of goals and there was one apiece for Sean Matthews and Lloyd Davies.

Second-placed Penrhiwceiber Rangers were also in prolific form as they saw off the threat from promotion rivals Cardiff Bay Harlequins in a 5-2 thrashing.

Howard Wiltshire scored two and Adam Callum, Craig Hewitt and Ryan Buckham added further punishment.

Tredegar climbed up the table with a 4-2 victory over bottom club Llangeinor.

Neil Matthisen, Ryan Carniss and Daniel Evans all found the net and an own goal rounded off the scoreline.

A single strike from Alex Vincent rewarded Newcastle Emlyn for their long trip to Newport YMCA.

A late goal from Chris Turner for Risca denied Division Three leaders Pontypridd the full points as they were held to a 1-1 draw, while second-placed Corus closed the gap with a 1-0 success at Abertillery Bluebirds thanks to a penalty from Ryan Frankham.

Third-placed Briton Ferry lost ground as they went down 3-2 at Aberbargoed Buds.

Legg up for Reds at Robins (Feb 7) 13:00

LLANELLI hoisted themselves back to the top of the Welsh Premier after continuing their fine run at Latham Park with victory over 10-man Newtown.

The Reds had won their last four visits to their Mid Wales hosts, scoring 16 goals, but had to battle all the way this time.

Second-half goals from Stuart Jones and substitute Jordan Follows clinched the win that took Andy Legg’s men back to the top, leaping above The New Saints who were beaten 1-0 at Connah’s Quay Nomads on Friday.

Newtown, themselves needing points to revive hopes of a Super 12 spot next season, were up against it after having full-back Damian Daniels red-carded midway through the first half after a challenge on Stuart Jones.

But the Robins reshaped and kept their high-flying visitors at bay for most part.

Llanelli’s top scorer Rhys Griffiths saw one effort saved by keeper Dave Roberts. And at the other end, Paul Roberts forced the ball narrowly wide from a back pass.

Newtown had a chance to take the lead after the break when Craig Hutchinson released Craig Williams whose shot was parried by keeper Ashley Morris only for Roberts to put the rebound wide.

And that miss proved costly as Llanelli went in front on 66 minutes, Jones heading in a Jason Bowen corner.

Griffiths went close to increasing the lead only to see his headed effort kept out by a great save from Roberts.

But the visitors nabbed a second just two minutes from time when Legg crossed for Griffiths whose effort was saved, but the ball looped up for sub Follows to nod in.

Sousa hails “one of the best” Swansea shows (Feb 7) 13:00

PAULO SOUSA hailed a complete performance from his Swans to take a first win in three – and insisted man-of-the-match David Cotterill can get even better.

Sousa saw his side keep their play-off plans on track with the comfy 2-0 win over Preston, inspired by record signing Cotterill, who scored one and set up Ashley Williams for the second.

But after admitting his team can still improve as they look to cement their top-six standing, Sousa added fans can also expect more from Cotterill.

The victory kept Swansea in fifth, level on points with fourth-placed Cardiff City, and Sousa said: “It was a complete performance – we played some great football.

“Our opponents tried to close all the space, but we made decisions and gave them a lot of difficulties.

“And if we keep up these performances we will be much stronger than ever.

“We kept the quality more constantly during the game.

“All the team had an outstanding game, but David is someone who is growing and growing.

“He has a lot of things to improve on, but he is someone who I expect to be an important player at a high level.

“He has things that mean he can achieve and he can be a top player.”

And Sousa admitted he was delighted chairman Huw Jenkins fought off interest in key players from other sides over the past month.

He was particularly happy that the speculation surrounding Wigan target Leon Britton was now over, insisting his performance shows a line can be drawn under the saga.

Sousa said: “Leon looks happy. Everyone saw a different Leon when the market closed.

“This is the person and the player I’m looking for here.”

County suffer rare setback (Feb 7) 13:00

COUNTY conceded their first league goals at Newport Stadium since mid September as Welling battled back from a two -goal deficit.

But despite the failure to extend a six-match winning run County still hold their mighty 17-point lead at the top of Blue Square South.

The runaway leaders started in fine style and it took them just five minutes to edge in front when left-back Jamie Collins managed the deftest of flicks to turn a Danny Rose free-kick to score.

County looked fluent and confident, but they were almost caught on the break in the 28th minute when Sam Hurrell blazed over from no more than five yards from a Loui Fazackerley cross.

County appeared to have made sure of the three points in the 58th minute when Craig Reid flicked the ball into the path of Kerry Morgan whose pinpoint finish made it 2-0, but four minutes later Welling hit back when Tom Whitnell fired past Glyn Thompson.

County boss Dean Holdsworth made a couple of substitutions, introducing Charlie Henry and Dave Gilroy and County should have put the issue to bed then, but two Reid efforts were scrambled off the line before Whitnell stunned the 1,449 fans by pouncing after County failed to deal with a Fazackerley corner.

Welling had the bit between their teeth and surged forward looking for the winner and deep into injury time Whitnell was denied his hat-trick by a brilliant save from Thompson.

Nomads stun TNS, while Port Talbot beat Hwest (Feb 6) 13:20

Mike Hayes stunned League leaders with the only goal of the game as TNS were beaten by GAP Connah's Quay at the Deeside Stadium.

The Chester-born striker, who joined the Nomads in August from Heswall capitalised on a rare mistake by Welsh International Steve Evans to fire passed Paul Harrison for what proved to be the winner on 69 minutes.

The introduction of new signing Chris Sharp two minutes after the goal along with Alex Darlington, was not enough as the Saints were beaten for just the second time this season.

A solitary goal from striker Martin Rose was enough for Port Talbot Town to claim their first win over Haverfordwest in six attempts. The striker struck on 63 minutes to claim all three points for the Steelmen.

Double blow for Neath ahead of tricky Bala trip (Feb 6) 13:20

AMBITIOUS Neath Athletic have been hit by a double whammy ahead of their vital trip to Bala Town.

Loan striker Chris Jones, who has netted four times in three appearances since his switch from Grimsby, and former Cardiff City midfielder Kevin Cooper are both doubtful.

Jones suffered a nasty facial injury in the disappointing 1-1 home draw with lowly Cefn Druids last week, while Cooper has a groin strain.

“It is a bad blow for us as they were two of the three new faces I brought in to freshen things up in our attempt to break into the top three,” said Eagles boss Andrew Dyer.

While Neath have taken just six points from their last five matches, Bala are on a roll.

Three wins on the trot – all away – and 16 points from 21 have shot the North Walians firmly into the top 10.

Writing is on the wall for Steelmen as bogey side visit (Feb 5) 13:20

PORT Talbot will be anxious to stop Haverfordwest's successful run at the GenQuip Stadium tonight.

Haverfordwest enjoy visiting the ground, having won three and drawn two of their past five matches at the venue.

It is a record Town boss Mark Jones is keen to put right as his team eye fourth spot, with Aberystwyth, the side above them, not in action until tomorrow at Airbus UK.

"I shall be putting that record on the wall of the dressing room and I expect another big effort from my players to bring that run to an end," he said.

"Haverfordwest were the big movers in the transfer market last month.

"Although I have seen them this season, they have a lot of new faces, some of whom I managed at Carmarthen.

"Tom Ramasut and Mark Dodds have both done well for me in the past and were part of the Welsh Cup-winning team. It will be an interesting match as they have bought to try to achieve a top 10 finish."

Jones hopes for the volume of support his players received at Aberystwyth last week in the Welsh Cup victory.

"It was great to have 200 supporters at Park Avenue and I hope they all return tonight and that the players can put on a performance to thank them," he added.

"We have a superb home record this season. We have won eight, drawn one and lost one of our past 10 matches. That's the consistency we need to continue."

The Steelmen will have Matthew Rees and Lee Surman available as their one-match suspensions do not kick in until tomorrow.

New manager for Bettws (Feb 5) 01:20

FORMER Swansea City star Damian Lacey sensationally quit struggling Bettws after his side slumped to a 5-1 home defeat in the MacWhirter Welsh League Division One.
Bettws moved immediately to make reserve team boss Karl Miller their third manager of the season.
Secretary Neil McEachan said: “Karl has Bettws in his blood and was a player in our championship winning season of 2002-3.
“It is something we have had in mind for some time but felt Karl needed to cut his teeth with the reserves, although he has actually played for the first team this season.
“His assistants have yet to be confirmed but youth team manager Marc Simmonds will take over as manager of the reserves with his assistants to be confirmed too.
“Bettws will be going back to basics to try and survive this season in division one and build for next season.
“Our youth team is doing well and perhaps we will start to see more of them in our first team. We’re certainly not giving up the fight.”
Up to five teams could be relegated from division one, so Bettws need to string together some decent results.

He has signed Botswana international Keitumetse Paul plus former STM Sports goalkeeper Robert Davies while centre-back Michael Brooks has signed again from Croesyceiliog.
He is also hoping to complete a deal with ex-Port Talbot midfield operator Gary Twynham, who has Football League experience with Darlington and Macclesfield.
Though Anthony Burnett and Dave Pucknell both went close to recording equalisers, the Steelmen clung on. Maesteg visit Croesyceiliog in the league on Saturday.

Sounds good as Cambrian use up grant cash (Feb 5) 01:00

CAMBRIAN & Clydach Vale BGC are reaping the benefits of being part of a new joint venture between the Welsh Football Trust and Football Association of Wales (FAW) to improve grounds in Wales.
The Welsh League One club was recently awarded £22,500 from the Welsh Grounds Improvements Scheme which they have used to build a First Aid room, spectator seating, as well as a new PA system.
The upgrades will play a substantial role in helping the club achieve their goal of a FAW Domestic License, which will enable them to host Welsh Premier League matches.
Established just over a year ago, Welsh Grounds Improvements was set up to distribute Football Association of Wales grant aid to clubs to help improve the standard of stadia.
Officials from Welsh Grounds Improvements visited the club to give their approval to the new facilities and to present a plaque to the club for the work carried out.
Peter Lee, Chairman of the Welsh Grounds Improvements Board said: "It is our aim to continue to help clubs like Cambrian and Clydach Vale BGC to improve the facilities that they offer to the community.
"We hope to help many more clubs improve their future prospects and at the same time close the gap between the standards of facilities in place at football clubs across Wales."

Cardiff City's Michael Chopra ready for Newcastle test (Feb 5) 01:00

Cardiff City striker Michael Chopra is eager to score against boyhood team Newcastle United on Friday night.

But the former Magpies frontman says he will not celebrate if he hits the back of the net at St James' Park, even though he wants the win for Cardiff.

"If I score I won't celebrate because I've still got respect for the fans," Chopra told BBC Sport Wales.

"I still go and watch the team and I still support the team, but I'll just be hoping that I can get a goal."

Chopra joined Cardiff from Newcastle on a £500,000 transfer in time for the 2006-7 season, signing a three-year deal.

Such was the 26-year-old's impact that season, scoring 22 Championship goals, that Sunderland bought the player for a fee believed to be £5m.

Chopra failed to settle at Sunderland - the arch-rivals of his formative club Newcastle - and he returned to Cardiff midway through the 2008-9 season, first on loan and then on a permanent deal.

And whatever abuse he may get from the stands on Friday night, Chopra says it will not put him off - because it cannot be worse than playing there for the Black Cats.

"I'm prepared for it," Chopra said. "The first time I went [back] there, when I was a Sunderland player it was hard because I didn't really know what to expect.

"I've been there and played for the worst enemies then, there's no doubt I'll get stick but I'll take it in good heart.

"I'm a strong-minded person, I'll blank it all out and hopefully if I can get a goal then that might shut a few of the fans up!

"There's a fantastic fan-base up there and a great stadium as well. You know that you're going to get at least 40,000 there, which is fantastic for a Championship club.

"For the lads that haven't played there it's going to be a great experience and... hopefully we can get the right result."

Manager Rogers calls it a day after Troedyrhiw are hit for six (Feb 5) 01:00

DEFEAT for Troedyrhiw marked the end of Kevin Rogers’ spell as manager at the club, though he hasn’t ruled out returning at some point in the future, writes David Williams.
Rogers announced his intentions to end his reign in the managerial hot seat to concentrate on work and family commitments after watching the Buds smash six past his side.
Rogers, who became manager before the start of the season, leaves Rhiw in 13th place in Welsh League division three with 17 points from 13 games.
“It was a very difficult decision to make but I’ve got to look at things from my point of view,” said Rogers.
“It was a very enjoyable experience. I have said to the club I’d like to help out in the future, maybe with the younger players.
“There is still a lot for Troedyrhiw to play for this season. There is still almost half a season left and if they could go on a run they could push for the top of the table.
“There is a lot of potential at the club and, as I’ve always maintained, there is potential throughout the valleys which Merthyr could use.”

Welsh football funding lends helping hand to clubs (Feb 4) 18:00
Fifty one football clubs across Wales - including Principality Welsh Premier League clubs who have benefitted the most - have received a helping hand to develop their grounds thanks to a joint venture between the Football Association of Wales (FAW) and the Welsh Football Trust.

Welsh Grounds Improvements - a funding initiative set up by the two organisations - has awarded £500,000 in grant aid to pay for ground and pitch-side improvements at the 51 clubs, with all the work due to be completed by July in readiness for the new season kick off.

Formed in April 2008, this is now the third round of funding to be distributed by Welsh Grounds Improvements to clubs in FAW affiliated leagues with the total awarded to date reaching almost £1.5million.

The grants, which pay for work ranging from new dug-outs to spectator stands, are awarded to clubs that are actively looking to develop their grounds to meet FAW League Pyramid criteria.

Among the 51 clubs to be awarded grants this year is Principality Welsh Premier League club Airbus UK Broughton FC who will build new spectator seating, whilst Bala, Porthmadog and Newtown have also announced publically that they had been successful with their applications.

Peter Lee, Chairman of the Welsh Grounds Improvements Board, said: "It is our aim to continue to help clubs to improve the facilities they offer to the community. Many clubs have benefitted from Welsh Grounds Improvements funding over the last two years and we are very happy to be able to support 51 more clubs this year.

"We received a total of £2.5m worth of applications from 74 clubs and all were assessed against criteria required for each league.

"We hope to help many more clubs improve their future prospects and at the same time close the gap between the standards of facilities in place at football clubs across Wales."

The funds have been an essential part of the FAW Domestic Club Licensing scheme, which requires clubs to meet 33 different infrastructure criteria in order to compete in next season's Welsh Premier League.

Chairman calls for an end to transfer windows in Welsh Premier League (Feb 4) 03:00
Club chairman Mike Jones today called for the scrapping of transfer windows for the Welsh Premier League and labelled them a restriction on trade.
He told The Robins web site, "The January transfer window is an anomaly that should be done away with. It is an appalling restriction of trade and I can think of no other industry that suffers such regulation.
"Can you imagine an office or factory manager who loses an employee to a rival company in August being told they cannot recruit a replacement until January.
"And by the way - if you don't get a suitable applicant within four weeks then 'tough', you'll now have to wait until next May".
"You couldn't make it up, could you?
"In the meantime, every team outside of our own league is free to pick off players at any time and there is not a thing we can do about it."
The chairman said the end of January brought an end to 'four weeks of frantic activity, excitement, frustration, disappointment and every emotion you can think of'.'
"Darren is delighted with the signings he has made but suffered major disappointments in the last few days when losing Richie Harris for the season just two minutes into his debut. "This blow was quickly followed by the news that the agreed transfer of an influential mid-fielder had been blocked by his club at the eleventh hour. Just when we thought it couldn't get any worse, the transfer of a new defender was ruled out by the FAW as the player was discovered to have played for two clubs already this season," said the chairman.

I'll repay County fans - Takumi on the comeback trail (Feb 4) 03:00
NEWPORT County manager Dean Holdsworth has been frustrated in his attempts to find a replacement for Ashan Holgate but he may just have the ideal man in the ranks already.
Pre-season matches aside, Japanese winger Takumi Ake’s Exiles career has so far consisted of just 36 minutes on the opening day of the season at Bishop’s Stortford. The former Team Bath man ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament on a sweltering afternoon in Hertfordshire on August 8 last year as his teammates battled to a 0-0 draw.
It’s been a long and often difficult road back for Ake but after six months of rehabilitation and recuperation, including 10 weeks in his native Osaka, he finally returned to training last week to a joyous reception.
Opening his heart to the Argus, the 25-year-old admits that he feared for his place at the club, and even his future as a player at one stage.
Watching from the other side of the world as County stormed to an astonishing 17-point lead at the top of the Blue Square South without him was clearly a painful experience, even if he was delighted for everyone at the club.
But now he’s desperate to be a part of the promotion push – targeting a return to action against Stortford, of all clubs, on March 13 – and he insists he’s ready to be the ‘new signing’ that can help them over the line.
“I arrived back in the country last Wednesday and had my first training session on Thursday,” said Ake.
“I was a bit worried that everyone would have forgotten me but they welcomed me back and I’m buzzing to be a part of it all again.
“It feels like I’ve done eight months of pre-season now and I can’t wait to get out on the pitch again.
“I can’t really describe how much it will mean to me to play in front of the Newport fans again.
“I have spoken to the gaffer and we are looking at the match at home to Bishop’s Stortford on March 13 for me to return.
“My dream is to play and score at Spytty Park and I hope to be celebrating with the fans in their headbands after that one and again when we clinch promotion.”

Swans star hits out at chairman (Feb 4) 03:00
Angel Rangel has hit out at Huw Jenkins, accusing Swansea City's chairman of denying him the chance to further his career.
Rangel claims Fulham had settled on a fee for his services after the Premier League side agreed to meet Jenkins's asking price.
But according to the defender, the Swansea supremo suddenly became incontestable as Monday's transfer deadline approached and that scuppered the chances of the move going through.
Rangel has insisted he will do his best to help Swansea into the Premier League this spring, but admits he is frustrated with the handling of Fulham's bid.
as emerged that the Cottagers first expressed an interest in Rangel via his agent around a fortnight ago.
Rangel says he knew nothing about the potential deal until deadline day — but felt there was still time for a deal to be done.
It is not known how much Swansea demanded for Rangel, but it is thought likely to have been a seven-figure sum.
"I will be honest, what I know from my agent is that Fulham made an offer and it was the offer the (Swansea) chairman was asking for," Rangel said.
"But then when everything about the deal was sorted and everything was ready, the chairman did not answer his phone or he turned it off.
"I think he asked for quite a lot of money for me and Fulham made a huge effort to get me, but he didn't want to sell.
"I think he asked for quite a high fee and he didn't expect Fulham to agree it.
"To be honest I am disappointed.
"We are not talking about another Championship club or a struggling Premier League club.
"Fulham are one of the top 10 sides in the country, they are in the fifth round of the FA Cup and they are in the Europa League.
"I have always given my best for Swansea City, but I have always said I would like to consider it if a Premier League club came in for me.
"That has now happened but the chairman did not ask me what I thought.

Cardiff City’s £2m land deal given go-ahead by council (Feb 3) 10:00

CARDIFF City have been given the go-ahead to sell off land worth £2m to raise money to pay its debts.

The club’s crucial land deal was approved by the city council’s executive board in a meeting which was delayed by two-and-a-half-hours yesterday as officials were working on the papers until the last minute.

The deal allows the club to:

Sell off a plot of land at Leckwith to major Bluebirds shareholder Paul Guy’s company Capital Retail Partnership for £1.8m;

Defer paying 40% of the sale owed to the council – £750,000 – for five years, when it will be repayable with interest over a further five years;

Hand responsibility for building the community House of Sport facility to club director Steve Borley, who has guaranteed to complete it by September 2011.

An extraordinary general meeting for Cardiff City’s shareholders, which has been demanded by the Supporters Trust, will now have to be held to approve a transaction between the club and Mr Borley, as he is a director.

It is understood that notices about the meeting will be going out in the next week.

At the County Hall meeting yesterday, council leader Rodney Berman said the arrangement was in the best interests of both the club and Cardiff taxpayers.

He said: “What we have here is a guarantee there will be a House of Sport that will start construction in the next three months.

Wrexham collect three points against Mansfield (Feb 3) 10:00

A DAY-LONG battle to ensure last night’s match at the Racecourse went ahead paid handsome dividends for Wrexham as they maintained their unbeaten start to 2010 at the expense of high-flying Mansfield.

A small army of volunteers spent several hours clearing snow from the Racecourse playing surface and then went to work with forks to help the melting snow and rain to drain away, so that referee Ian Halliday had little hesitation in passing the pitch fit to play.

And those sterling efforts were rewarded by a third victory in four New Year outings for the Dragons.

The visitors were unchanged following a 4-1 win at Forest Green Rovers at the weekend, but Wrexham’s line-up included new signing Luke Holden.

And Mike Williams continued in the absence of Frank Sinclair.

The visitors were bright and positive in the early stages, but it was the Dragons who carved out the first opening after nine minutes when Mangan pounced on Mansour Assoumani’s header only to see his volley ricochet to safety off the crossbar.

The woodwork came to Town’s rescue a second time when a 24th-minute free-kick from Wes Baynes was tipped onto the bar by keeper Alan Marriott.

The ball rebounded to Jamie McCluskey, whose first-time response was hurried and he sliced his shot well wide of the goal.

Baynes, though, was not to be denied and four minutes later, put clear by Christian Smith, he drove a cross-shot into the bottom corner of the net to register his second goal in the space of four days.

But the complexion of the match changed within three minutes of the restart when the visitors levelled through Jake Speight, who raced in at the near post to head home Richard Duffy’s flick-on from a Craig Armstrong throw.

Andy Mangan restored Wrexham’s advantage in the 58th minute.

His first Racecourse goal was a typical poacher’s close-range finish after Assoumani’s knock-down fell to Christian Smith, whose initial effort was blocked.

Wrexham’s Smith was sent off collecting a second yellow card for preventing a quick free-kick in the 90th minute, but they collected the three points.

"I have no doubt that he will get a move sooner or later, and with full-time football he will develop even further."

Three key players leave Rhyl (Feb 2) 20:00

THREE key players have left Rhyl – but in a remarkable U-turn midfielder Mark Connolly has decided to stay with the Welsh Premier champions.

Striker Lee Hunt, who has joined Bangor City, captain and centre-half George Horan and utility man Greg Stones have all said their farewells to the Lilywhites in the light of the club’s current financial crisis.

But the Belle Vue outfit have also lined up five new signings and yesterday managed to keep striker Matthew Williams on board, despite an approach from Telford United.

Top scorer Connolly told the Daily Post last Friday that family responsibilities meant he could not gamble on accepting the club’s “No Europe, No Wages” terms on offer to most of the squad for March and April.

But funding has now been found to keep the player at Belle Vue for the rest of the season.

The 21-goal ace has also been made first-team vice-captain while midfield maestro John Leah, who the Lilywhites have managed to retain on similar terms to Connolly, is the new skipper, replacing the departing Horan.

Stones revealed after Saturday’s 7-0 Welsh Cup victory over Pontardawe Town that he had reluctantly played his last game for the Lilies.

The 27-year-old is moving to Unibond League club Colwyn Bay, where his brother-in-law Gary Jones is assistant manager to former Rhyl number two Neil Young.

Stones is another who could not afford to gamble on the Lilywhites’ offer not to pay the players for March or April, with the proviso that if the club qualified for Europe the squad would split the prize money.

“I’m expecting to be made redundant in March and I’m getting married soon, so I need regular money from football,” said the Birkenhead-born utility man.

New faces at Belle Vue include left-sided midfielder/defender Andy Owens and centre-half Andy Pearson, both from Altrincham, and utility man Philip Ojapah, who joins from Oldham Athletic on loan.

International clearance is awaited on ex-Crewe Alexandra centre-back Russell Courtney and winger Joe Dixon.

Hunt rejoins Bangor as Powell finally nets ace striker (Feb 2) 20:00

BANGOR City pulled off a major coup by signing striker Lee Hunt from Rhyl on transfer deadline day.

Hunt was released from his contract by mutual consent by the Lilywhites during the weekend and has signed for City in time to make his debut against Airbus UK Broughton tonight.

The 28-year-old frontman’s first experience in the Welsh Premier came at Bangor in the 2002/03 campaign, but the following season he joined Rhyl and was a key member of their treble-winning side.

Hunt was leading scorer for the Belle Vue outfit in four of the five full seasons he spent at the club and is their second highest marksman of all-time in the Welsh Premier League with a remarkable 85 goals.

“I’m absolutely over the moon to have signed Lee,” said a delighted Bangor City manager Neville Powell.

“I’ve just lost Chris Sharp (to The New Saints) and quickly brought in a replacement in Eddie Jebb (from Colwyn Bay).

“But when we heard over the weekend Lee had become available to sign we moved for him like a shot.

“He will bring added quality and class to the front-line – he’s a good target man who can score goals and will hopefully bring that extra factor to push us up the league.”

County boss Holdsworth denies Peterborough link (Feb 2) 12:20

NEWPORT County boss Dean Holdsworth Will be staying at Spytty Park despite the former Wimbledon striker being linked with the Championship’s bottom club Peterborough United.

Former Stockport County boss Jim Gannon is favourite to get the hot-seat at Posh following Mark Cooper’s brief stay – But Holdsworth’s name was yesterday being mentioned in connection with the post.

However, County chairman Chris Blight quickly poured cold water on any suggestion of a dramatic move into English football’s second tier for hos manager.

County are running away with the Blue Square South and, barring a miracle, will be crowned champions well before the end of the season and can start planning for the Conference.

“I’m flattered to be linked with any Football League club but I have a job to finish here first, you don’t climb a mountain to get to the middle,” Holdsworth told the Echo.

“I’m very proud of what we’re all doing here but the job is only half done. This club could break a 20-year old record and I aim to be part of history with my players and staff and everybody connected with the club.

“Of course I want to manage a Football League Club one day and that is my aim further down the road but the only track I’m concerned is the one to the Conference with Newport, what happens after that who knows but I’m totally focused on this job.”

Blight insisted he has not heard from any club about Holdsworth’s position and expects the manager to continue leading County charge to promotion.

“We must be doing something right if our manager is being talked about in those circles, but I know Dean is totally professional in everything he does and he will take it in his stride,” he said.

“We all know that this club is in a good position yet the job is only half done.

Top spot target for Llanelli (Feb 2) 11:50

LLANELLI look to return to the top of the Welsh Premier League tonight as they host Carmarthen at Stebonheath Park (7.30).

Andy Legg's side, who booked their Welsh Cup quarter-final spot on Saturday by seeing off Holyhead Hotspur, trail leaders The New Saints by two points.

But the Reds will take over at the summit by winning their game in hand against their visitors.

Carmarthen have failed to get going this season, with Deryn Brace's side surprisingly lying 11th in the table — outside of qualification for next season's super 12.

Last weekend's 0-0 draw with Newtown failed to improve their chances, though a point could move them above Airbus, who visit Bangor tonight.

Newport County extend lead at top of table (Feb 1) 11:50

ALL bets on the destiny of the Blue Square South title must surely be off after County extended their lead to 17 points with a game in hand with their sixth successive league win, though Bromley played their part in a superb match.

Dean Holdsworth’s men produced a display that was rich in quality with speedy and accurate passing movements all over the park, though, after appearing to have the game won by building what looked to be an unassailable two-goal lead, they had to dig deep following a remarkable home revival.

The away fans were celebrating after 21 minutes when Paul Cochlin was not picked up after a short County corner, and the giant County centre-back headed in Sam Foley’s cross.

County were frequently defied by Bromley keeper Gareth Williams, who made a string of fine saves, before Charlie Henry had appeared to put the match safe by striking in the 52nd minute, but Bromley hit back with two goals in three minutes, becoming the first side to score twice against the Exiles since mid August.

Ryan Hall was just onside when he raced clear to score the first in the 62nd minute and Warren McBean delighted the home supporters with the equaliser when he pounced after a long throw-in from Steve Ferguson unsettled the usually secure County defence.

But County quickly reasserted their authority when Jamie Collins sent Foley clear in the 69th minute and the striker rounded off a fine personal display with a perfect finish.

Dyer frustrated at Druids stalemate (Feb 1) 11:40

Despite the Eagles extending their unbeaten home run to 14 matches, it was not the result manager Andrew Dyer was hoping for.

"I'm frustrated. We didn't play well again for the first 45 minutes but picked up after the break," Dyer said.

"That has been the pattern lately and we must get out of the blocks quicker.

"We have to sharpen up quickly. We have a big six-match month in February and our next three matches are at Bala, Newtown and Caersws.

"These are crucial matches if we are to achieve our hope of getting into Europe this season."

Dyer added: "You can't expect to turn up for 45 minutes and win football matches. The next month will be a test of ourselves."

Dyer also received a massive blow when striker Chris Jones went off with a suspected broken nose in the 46th minute.

"We'll have to see what the damage is to Chris. He's gone to hospital for an investigation."

Brace confident ahead of Llanelli trip (Feb 1) 11:35

Newtown and Carmarthen Town fought out a 0-0 draw at snow-covered Latham Park.

It was a result that will please neither side in their quest for a top 10 spot. But with an eight-point lead over their hosts, the Old Gold at least have maintained the gap. "In the conditions, I'm pleased with a point although it was a performance without quality," said Town boss Deryn Brace.

"We showed a steely resilience as one goal was always going to win it, but we couldn't come up with the quality and composure needed to win the game.

"But we kept a clean sheet and that was pleasing. We looked solid throughout."

Carmarthen are now unbeaten on the road in seven matches and if they can improve their home form — eight points from eight starts — they can climb the table.

"We know we are capable of producing good results and I'm confident we can go to Llanelli and do a job," added Brace.
