Swansea extend Trundle's loan deal until end of season (Dec 31) 14:35

Lee Trundle's loan move at Championship club Swansea City has been extended to the end of the season.
The Bristol City striker has been on loan at the Liberty Stadium since August and Swansea have taken up the option to keep him until the summer.
Swansea's five-goal top-scorer is now eligible for their FA Cup third round clash at Leicester City on Saturday.
The 33-year-old insists he wants to 'sign at Swansea for life' when he becomes a free agent in the summer.
Trundle's initial deal ran out on New Year's Day but Swansea manager Paulo Sousa wanted to keep the fans' favourite until the end of the season.
The Scouser's contract with Bristol City runs out at the end of the season and has been told he is free to leave after failing to settle at Ashton Gate - so is available on a free transfer in the summer.

Cardiff City target Wigan midfielder Ben Watson (Dec 31) 14:30

Wigan Athletic's Ben Watson has emerged as a January transfer target for Dave Jones as he bids to ease Cardiff City's central midfield injury crisis.
Jones is interested in signing the ex-England under-21 player and on-loan QPR midfielder on loan until the end of the season, BBC Sport understands.
Cardiff have no fit first-choice centre midfielders as Gavin Rae and Stephen McPhail are out for a few weeks.
While Joe Ledley is playing through the pain barrier as he needs hip surgery.
Watson, who joined Wigan from Crystal Palace for £2m last January, was linked with a season-long move to Cardiff in the summer before signing a four-month deal at Championship rivals Queens Park Rangers.
But his QPR spell is due to end on New Year's Eve and the 24-year-old is believed to be unsettled at Loftus Road after Jim Magilton's sacking earlier this month.
High-flying Cardiff, who are pushing for promotion to the Premier League, are interested in signing Watson.
The fourth-placed Championship club will have to pay half of the player's wages but the two clubs are not thought to have yet spoken about the intricate details of the deal.

County boss says "2010 can be even better" (Dec 31) 14:155/font>
THE Queen may have written it off as a year to forget but for Dean Holdsworth and Newport County 2009 will live long in the memory.
As he prepares his squad for their first test of 2010 at home to Worcester tomorrow (kick off 3pm), the Exiles boss took time out to reflect on a near-perfect 12 months.
It has certainly been a remarkable turnaround since the annus horribilis that was 2008.
This time last year County were just three points above the relegation zone in the Blue Square South with a meagre return of 20 points from 21 games.
Flash forward to today and Holdsworth’s men are sitting pretty at the top with a 13-point lead having notched up 53 points from 22 games – just six points off the total for the whole of last season.
In total County have played 49 matches in 2009, winning 31, drawing eight and losing ten – and two of those defeats came with a reserve side in the Gwent Senior Cup.
That run includes a club record of 20 successive league games unbeaten from March 18 at home to Bath City to the 1-0 loss at Staines Town on October 27.
“It’s been a fabulous year and the position we find ourselves in today is testament to all the hard work everyone at the club has put in,” said Holdsworth.
“The players, the staff, the fans and everyone behind the scenes have all done a hell of a lot for this club and you can see the results on the pitch – we’ve come a long way in the past 12 months.
“It’s all down to four things – professionalism, adaptability, organisation and preparation – and we’ve got that in abundance,” he added.
“People talk about players going full-time next year if we go up but they’ve already got a full-time attitude.
“We don’t get enough time between games to work on set-pieces and analysis of performances but we make the most of what time we do have.”
With former County striker Phil Walsh being plucked from Blue Square South rivals Dorchester Town to sign for League Two Dagenham & Redbridge, Holdsworth accepts that bigger clubs may be eyeing some of his prized assets but he insists that the fans have nothing to worry about on that front.
“I always say that we train them well enough that they can leave but treat them well enough that they don’t want to,” he said.
“This is probably the best squad we’ve ever had and people are bound to be looking at us but it’s a great group with a tight bond.
“We’ve been through a lot together and we’ve still got a job to finish so I think they will want to stay and achieve success with us – 2010 can be even better than 2009.”
The squad came together for training last night with midfielder Scott Rogers taking part after missing Monday’s 3-0 victory over Dorchester through injury and he could play some part against Worcester.
Right-back Paul Bignot is available after competing his one-game suspension.
And Danny Rose is in contention to start after coming off the bench on Monday but striker Dave Gilroy is still two weeks away from fitness. l Former County midfielder Lee Fowler, 26, has signed for Blue Square Premier leaders Oxford United for the rest of the season following his release from Kettering.

LEE Trundle looks poised to stay on at Swansea City (Dec 30) 02:15
LEE Trundle looks poised to stay on at Swansea City after Paulo Sousa gave the strongest indication yet that he wants to keep the striker.
Trundle's four-month loan from Bristol City came to a quiet end yesterday as he sat on the bench throughout Swansea's goalless draw with Crystal Palace.
The 33-year-old is due to go back to Ashton Gate this week - but Sousa looks set to stop that happening by offering him an extended stay at the Liberty.
Trundle has made no secret of his desire to earn a longer deal having returned to Wales in August.
And it now seems that despite making only one start in his second stint as a Swan, the Scouse star has done enough to convince Sousa that he is worth having around. Swansea's preference for playing only one central striker has seen Trundle struggle for game-time, with Sousa tending to go for targetmen in Craig Beattie and Gorka Pintado. But as his record of five strikes so far this season proves, Trundle is the only natural goalscorer in Sousa's squad.
The Portuguese was typically cagey when asked about Trundle's situation after the Palace draw, but his comments indicated that a fresh deal is close to being done. "The situation with Lee is done, now it's a question of the two clubs," Sousa said.
"The chairman will announce something when he can, but I cannot tell you. I only talk when these things are done."

Dave Jones' fury at Cardiff City's festive flops (Dec 30) 02:15
Cardiff City boss Dave Jones has warned his festive flops they could be sold in the January transfer window as he targets Premier League promotion.
Jones meets Bluebirds chairman Peter Ridsdale this week to discuss finances and potential recruits to replace under-performing players.
Cardiff lost to bottom club Plymouth before letting a 4-0 lead slip at lowly Peterborough in Monday's 4-4 draw.
Jones said: "One or two, if we can do it, we'll change them."
"But it's certainly a horror show for the second 45 minutes, going from such a comfortable lead.
"But when you think you've seen it all, you haven't and that's sometimes the beauty of this game.
"Players switched off and didn't do what they were told to do. Players went from a dominant position to thinking that the game was done and dusted.
"Far too many of our players didn't work hard enough. We allowed Peterborough back into the game when they were dead and buried."
Cardiff still remain fourth in the Championship but they have slipped to eight points behind the automatic promotion places and Jones has openly stated the exit door is beckoning for some of his players when the transfer window opens on Friday.
He said: "I don't know what I've got to spend. I'll sit down with the chairman and see what's there.
"We need to get players in because the players, in the second half, didn't do what we expected of them.
"So if we can change it, then change it because the mentality in the dressing room at the moment was maybe they thought "two bottom teams is going to be easy" and nothing's easy at this level and I've said that many times before.
"But maybe one or two of them just decided that they think it's a bit easy and one or two, if we can do it, we'll change them."
The club hopes to raise £3m from season ticket sales for next season ahead of 31 December, boosting the funds available to Jones.
Hull striker Daniel Cousin was linked with a move to Cardiff while Ipswich's Republic of Ireland midfielder Owen Garvan is another apparent Bluebirds target as Jones is keen to reinforce his frontline and midfield.

Newport's promotion push continues (Dec 29) 02:15
Newport County finally overcame a dogged Dorchester side to win 3-0 at Spytty Park this afternoon.
After a poor first 45 minutes, second half strikes from Craig Reid (2) and Gary Warren sealed the win.
And Dover Athletic's defeat to Chelmsford means Dean Holdsworth's men extend their lead at the top of the Blue Square South to 13 points with a game in hand.
It was also County's biggest attendance of the season with a crowd of 2,151, giving them an average this season of 1,462.
Next up for County is another home game, when Worcester are the visitors to Spytty park on Friday new years day.

Ten man Swansea hold out for a draw (Dec 29) 02:10
Swansea City held out for 73 minutes with 10 men to secure a point against fellow Championship play-off hopefuls Crystal Palace.
Defender Albert Serran was sent off for a foul on Eagles midfielder Neil Danns to leave the hosts facing an uphill struggle.
But Palace could not find a way through a determined defence and had to settle for a share of the spoils at the Liberty Stadium.
Swansea made the brighter start with Palace keeper Julian Speroni forced to palm a long-range shot from Gorka Pintado onto a post.
But the hosts' game plan was thrown into disarray in the 17th minute when Serran brought down Danns as the midfielder burst through.
Serran and his team-mates pleaded his innocence but referee Anthony Taylor brandished a straight red card.
Swans boss Paulo Sousa sacrificed midfielder Joe Allen for defender and club captain Garry Monk, back in the squad after injury.
Palace immediately went on the attack and Danns sent a header wide before Calvin Andrew, still looking for his first goal since signing from Luton last summer, nodded Darren Ambrose's free-kick over. Austrian midfielder Johnny Ertl tried his luck from long range but Swans keeper Dorus de Vries was not unduly troubled. After the break a cross from Nathaniel Clyne caused minor panic in the Swansea area but the home defence managed to block shots from Ambrose and Victor Moses before Danns fired the loose ball wide. Eagles boss Neil Warnock turned to former Cardiff striker Alan Lee in place of Andrew in a bid to break the deadlock. Teenage winger Moses almost gave the Palace fans something special with a stunning run past three Swansea defenders, but Lee could not get a head on his cross. Moses departed soon after to be replaced by Freddie Sears, who is set to be recalled by West Ham next week.
Sears, who has not managed a goal since joining the Eagles on loan in August, spurned a great chance when he raced through only to shoot too close to de Vries while Ambrose was screaming for a pass. At the other end Andrea Orlandi was fed by Nathan Dyer on the break but his shot was saved by Speroni to ensure honours ended even.

Peterborough's stunning fight-back denied Cardiff City all 3 points (Dec 29) 02:00
Bottom Championship club Peterborough's stunning fight-back denied Cardiff City, who led 4-0 at half-time.
Joe Ledley scored twice, firing home from inside the penalty area, then heading in the second from close-range.
Jay Bothroyd struck from the edge of the penalty area and Peter Whittingham curled in a long-range free kick.
But substitute Josh Simpson's strike, Charlie Lee's header and George Boyd's late goal were followed by Simpson's 92nd-minute leveller.
At the break the Bluebirds seemed to be heading for fourth place, but remain fifth in the promotion race after blowing their chance to bounce back from their Boxing Day defeat to Plymouth. Peter Whittingham teed up Ledley for his first goal of the season in the sixth minute and the Welsh international midfielder claimed his second with a rare header. Bothroyd's strike and Whittingham's free-kick capped an inspired opening period who were unstoppable in the opening 45 minutes. But Posh fought back in memorable fashion with substitute Simpson, Lee and Boyd completing a stunning comeback against Dave Jones' side. The draw still means Mark Cooper's team enter the New Year at the foot of the table while Cardiff, who were denied their first win at London Road for 23 years, lost precious points in the race for promotion.

Cardiff City boss Dave Jones ready to shake things up (Dec 28) 13:15

DAVE Jones has pledged to make changes to his Cardiff City team for today’s Championship clash with Peterborough United at London Road.

That may include axing Michael Chopra and giving Ross McCormack a chance next to Jay Bothroyd up front.

Jones also needs to reshape his midfield and may hand Peter Whittingham a central midfield role next to Gavin Rae.

Kelvin Etuhu is also in line for a call-up, while teenage right-back Adam Matthews may well get the nod ahead of Paul Quinn.

Whittingham may be asked to provide the creative spark missing in central midfield, with Jones having limited options.

Teenager Aaron Wildig and former Dagenham player Solomon Taiwo are next in line.

Jones has confidence in Wildig, but may believe it’s too early to heap that sort of pressure on the youngster, while Taiwo is taking time to adapt following his jump up in standard to Championship football.

Etuhu could play in a wide area with McCormack linking up with Bothroyd, with Chopra having lost his scoring touch.

“These are matches everybody expects us to win, everybody thinks it’s an automatic three points,” said Jones.

“It’s not. Plymouth and Peterborough are fighting for everything. It’s not about ability. It’s about going that extra half yard. Going to your limits.

“These matches are games which can lift teams out of this division – if you win. We have to beat teams at the bottom.

“We came off three good wins and maybe some players think we’ve done it.”

Play-offs are our aim, says Rangel (Dec 28) 13:10

ANGEL Rangel concedes that Swansea City are not competing with the Championship's top clubs — but believes a point at Reading keeps them on course for a play-off chance.

Swansea's right-back accepts that Premier League outcasts like Newcastle and West Brom, who currently occupy the top two spots in the second tier, will be difficult to overhaul in the second half of the season.

But Rangel remains upbeat about Swansea's prospects for the remainder of the campaign after they battled to a draw at the Madejski Stadium.

"We look at the clubs at the top and always try to push ourselves to win every game because we want three points," said the Spaniard.

"But I think teams like Newcastle and West Brom are on another level and the aim for us is not to look at them.

"We have to realise that we are Swansea City and we are doing well, better than we were at this time last season. There is still a long way to go this season, but our aim is to carry on the way we are going and to see if we can stay in the top six."

Port Talbot save their best for the cameras (Dec 28) 13:00

THREE moments of class leading up to half-time earned Port Talbot Town a crucial 2-0 victory over Neath at the GenQuip Stadium yesterday.

The victory took the Blues ahead of the Eagles into fourth spot, while the visitors slip to sixth, although they have matches in hand on all five sides above them.

The sides were well matched in the first period, but a magnificent save by Port Talbot keeper Lee Kendall in the 36th minute maintained the deadlock.

Richard Ingram must have thought his volley was destined for the net, but Kendall's instinctive save to his right at full stretch denied the visitors.

The drama continued four minutes later when Port Talbot were awarded a free-kick 30 yards out after a dazzling Drew Fahiya surge was brought to an abrupt halt.

Up stepped Scott Barrow and his fierce left-foot shot fizzed into the top right corner of the net with Neath keeper Wyn Walters having no chance.

It was a stunning goal but the second, on the stroke of half-time, was almost as memorable.

Daniel Thomas won the ball in the air and found Fahiya, and his inch-perfect pass was met by a superb 20-yard shot by Neil Thomas that Walters again had no chance of keeping out. Neath never looked like recovering after the interval and only the brilliance of striker Chris Llewellyn kept Neath's interest alive.

But the Steelmen easily held out to gain a memorable and deserved victory in front of a live television audience and a season's best crowd of 678.

They have now taken 19 points from their last seven matches and look a good bet to challenge for European football.

Neath, who suffered their first defeat in 13 matches, have much to contemplate ahead of the New Year's Day return at The Gnoll as they have now won just twice in six matches. "There were three defining moments in the match, a great save and two fantastic strikes, but I'm disappointed with our performance, which lacked energy and desire," said Neath boss Andrew Dyer. "We gave the ball away too cheaply and didn't turn up, especially in the second half.

"But we played a very good Port Talbot side." Port Talbot manager Mark Jones was elated.

"It was a fantastic victory," he said. "We said before the game that this was a special occasion in front of the cameras and the players did not disappoint.

"Kendall's save was the best I have seen in the Welsh Premier and Scott's free-kick the best goal I have seen at this level.

"Our back four were superb and Leigh De Vulgt deserves special mention as he is an unsung hero at this club.

"Our midfield won their battle and the two lads I brought in as Martin Rose was suspended — Drew Fahiya and Daniel Thomas — were both magnificent.

"But all 14 played their part in an important win for us."

Aber rise after Boxing Day win (Dec 27) 20:30

Aberystwyth 2-1 Haverfordwest

FIRST-HALF goals from Luke Sherbon and Glyndwr Hughes lifted Aberystwyth up to fourth as Haverfordwest remain in the wrong half of the table.

Having not defeated the Bluebirds in four years at Park Avenue, the Black and Greens started brightly and were ahead on six minutes when the lively Geoff Kellaway crossed for Sherbon to head home.

And that lead was doubled midway through the first half with Kellaway again the provider on the right, and Hughes planting his header into the net.

Although Aber controlled much of the game, the visitors stayed in the hunt even when reduced to 10 men after Bobby Briers was dismissed for his second booking on 66 minutes.

And they gave themselves a glimmer of hope five minutes from time when Jack Christoper converted from the penalty spot after Steffan Williams had been fouled in the box.

Aber held firm to boost their prospects of European football.

Jarman rescues Llanelli (Dec 27) 20:30

Carmarthen 1-2 Llanelli

LEADERS Llanelli shaded this closely contested Boxing Day derby at Richmond Park in a Christmas cracker of a second half that keeps their title hopes firmly on track.

It was a game Carmarthen had targeted for much-needed points to give them a chance of qualification for the new Super League but after clawing their way back into the contest at 1-1 they were felled by an injury time winner.

Defender Lee Jarman was the Llanelli hero after becoming the villain of the piece by conceding a penalty five minutes from time.

Tim Hicks slammed home the equaliser and it looked like Llanelli would have to settle for a draw before Jarman’s late show snatched an unlikely three points.

After a goalless first half, Reds boss Andy Legg made an inspired second-half double substitution when he introduced Chris Holloway and Craig Freater for Craig Moses and Andy Mumford.

The pair livened up proceedings, instilling some much needed impetus into the visitors’ game and from that point Llanelli looked likely to take the spoils.

It paid off in the 72nd minute when Chris Venables latched onto a loose ball after a scramble in the home box and he scored with a shot from 12 yards.

Carmarthen showed great character to come back and levelled five minutes from time when Craig Hughes was brought down in the box by Jarman and Hicks scored from the spot.

Jarman made amends in the third minute of added time when he fired home the winner from inside the box after the Town defence failed to clear their lines.

A healthy holiday crowd of 580 saw the Reds move into the new year sat proudly at the top of the Welsh Premier.

Rivals Port Talbot & Neath in big test (Dec 26) 19:30

PORT TALBOT and Neath’s aspirations of breaking into the top three of the Welsh Premier will be severely tested over the festive period when the local rivals go head-to-head twice.

The Steelmen have home advantage tomorrow in a match that is being televised live by S4C (1.30pm) with manager Mark Jones debating his starting line-up.

Goal ace Martin Rose misses the clash due to suspension, while midfielder Gareth Phillips is also banned leaving Jones concerned about his players’ discipline this season.

“We have too many players close to earning themselves suspensions and it is an issue the players and management team are addressing,” Jones said.

Drew Fahiya or Daniel Thomas look the likely candidates for the striker’s role as Port Talbot seek to extend a six-match unbeaten sequence yielding 16 points.

Neath boss Andy Dyer, whose side are unbeaten in 12 matches, has a full squad, other than Carl Shaw, who is out for the season.

“We are really looking forward to the match, which should be full of passion, so discipline and concentration will be key factors if we are to secure a result,” Dyer said.

Bottom club Plymouth stunned promotion-chasing Cardiff (Dec 26) 19:25

Bottom club Plymouth stunned promotion-chasing Cardiff with a smash-and-grab raid at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Gary Sawyer struck six minutes from time with a deflected effort after Paul Quinn's poor clearance.

Cardiff had chances to take all three points but missed chances through Peter Whittingham, Michael Chopra, Jay Bothroyd and Joe Ledley late on.

Argyle keeper Romain Larrieu also denied Mark Hudson's header as the visitors ended a run of five defeats.

It was new boss Paul Mariner's first win in his third game in charge and his side's first goal in over 500 minutes of football.

Cardiff keeper David Marshall had no chance with the goal though after Sawyer's shot deflected off Hudson.

He did also keep Cardiff in it in the first half denying Alan Judge, but was the quieter of the two keepers as Cardiff blew the chance to close the gap on the Championship's top two.

Frenchman Larrieu turned Hudson's header over the bar and then sent Whittingham's 20-yard effort to safety.

Bothroyd then narrowly put the ball over the bar from inside the box before Chopra wasted a good chance.

Cardiff piled on further pressure after Sawyer's goal, but Ledley drove just wide from 12 yards as Plymouth held on for a vital win as they climbed off the bottom and attempt to reach Championship safety.

1st-half stoppage time goal secured a point for managerless Reading (Dec 26) 19:20

Gylfi Sigurdsson's free-kick in first-half stoppage time secured a point for managerless Reading.

Darren Pratley had given Swansea the lead nine minutes before the break with his third goal in two games, finishing off a fine move by the visitors.

Both sides had chances to claim all three points with Reading's Adam Federici saving from Nathan Dyer and Gorka Pintado.

Sigurdsson forced Dorus de Vries into a good save, as did Jimmy Kebe.

Reading still only have one win at the Madejski Stadium this season but the point moves them up to 19th, four points above the Championship's relegation zone.

This time last year, they were second in the table and pushing for an immediate return to the Premier League.

Swansea kept up the pressure at that end as they chase down the automatic promotion places but stay in fifth.

They could have gone ahead after 13 minutes when Brynjar Gunnarsson's clearance was deflected into the path of Dyer but Federici made a smart stop with his legs.

Reading's Australian goalkeeper later denied Orlandi after the Spaniard tested him from 25 yards, but he could do little nine minutes before half-time when Orlandi fed Pratley who finished superbly.

Swansea's lead was cancelled out three minutes into first-half stoppage time when Dyer fouled Sigurdsson outside the box and the Icelandic midfielder picked himself up to curl the free kick into the bottom-left corner.

Reading started the second half strongly and Grzegorz Rasiak fired wide before Sigurdsson sent a shot over.

But Swansea always looked dangerous and Federici dived low to deny Pintado's header.

Lee Trundle had the ball in the back of the net for Swansea late on but the goal was ruled out for offside as Reading held on.

Trundle: Leaving Swans would break my heart (Dec 25) 19:00

LEE Trundle heads into the final week of his stint at Swansea City hoping he is not about to face the heartbreak of leaving the Liberty for a second time.
Trundle's four-month loan spell from Bristol City comes to an end after the Christmas fixtures against Reading and Crystal Palace.
Paulo Sousa revealed he has already made a decision on whether to keep the 33-year-old — but won't confirm Trundle's fate until after the Eagles visit the Liberty on Monday. "I've spoken already with Lee and I know what I'm going to do, but you (the press) will need to wait to see what is going to happen. It's already done with Lee," said the Swans boss. But the Scouse star remains in the dark over whether Sousa will offer him the chance to stay in Wales.
"Leaving now would be the worst thing that could happen to me," said Swansea's five-goal leading scorer.
"I made a choice to leave Swansea last time. It was a football decision and it was about playing at the highest level possible.
"But I realise now that once you leave a club, it's not always the same. "Swansea is where I enjoy my football and where I enjoy my life. "I feel comfortable in my life here and that helps you do well on the pitch, as does the relationship I have with the Swansea fans.
"It was my choice to go last time, but if the choice ever came up again I wouldn't leave because I realise now how much being in Swansea helps my game and helps me relax. "It's about feeling at home." Bristol City will allow Trundle to remain at Swansea for the rest of the season, and the 33-year-old says he would be happy to agree a fresh loan which takes him to the summer. By then Trundle will be free agent, and hopes he will have done enough to earn a permanent Swansea deal.

Cardiff City wanted to re-sign Jason Koumas (Dec 25) 19:00

CARDIFF CITY boss Dave Jones has revealed how the Bluebirds made a bold attempt to bring Jason Koumas back to the club to spearhead the Premier League promotion push in the new year.
Jones wants four new signings when the January transfer window opens ... and ex-Wales star Koumas has been one of the men he has tracked.
The move has fallen through because Koumas says he remains determined to make his mark in the Premier League with Wigan.
But Jones will step up attempts to bolster his squad, stating the lesson City have learned from previous failures to get into the play-offs is the need for greater strength in depth.

Neath look to extend a superb unbeaten run of 13 matches (Dec 24) 00:30

Neath, who have been hit by a string of postponements recently, will look to extend a superb unbeaten run of 13 matches.

Manager Andrew Dyer is confident a local derby will stir his players into another rousing display.

"They are really up for this one and looking forward to it," he said.

"I'm sure it will be a game of passion and it is vital that we retain our discipline and concentration.

"It's an important match for both teams, as if Port Talbot win they would leapfrog us into fourth spot.

"It would also add pressure to the return game on New Year's Day. Port Talbot are a tough team to play against and I tipped them to be up there challenging for the top three at the start of the season."

Neath striker Carl Shaw will miss the rest of the season.

More of the same will do very nicely for Reds boss Legg (Dec 24) 00:20

LLANELLI could return to the top of the Principality Welsh Premier League if they see off Carmarthen Town on Boxing Day.

The match, which is expected to draw a bumper crowd to Richmond Park, signals the halfway stage of the campaign for Andy Legg's team, and the Reds boss is delighted with the attitude shown by his players so far.

"Considering the large amount of injuries and illnesses we have had, I think the lads have done brilliantly to keep us in the hunt near the top," he said.

"They have shown tremendous character. But now the crisis is nearly over I have a different kind of headache — who to leave out.

"But it's a nice problem to have and the fight for places can only be good for us."

Only Ross Jones, who has yet to appear this season due to injury, and Owain Warlow are definitely ruled out.

Legg expects a tough test from the hosts.

Swans may go back in for Zak (Dec 24) 00:10

SWANSEA City are ready to revive their bid for Millwall's Zak Whitbread — if the defender can prove his fitness.

Swansea agreed a fee for Whitbread in the summer transfer window but pulled the plug on the deal when he underwent surgery on a problem in his hip and groin.

And the Evening Post understands Swansea are ready to rekindle their interest in the 25-year-old as he prepares for a return to action.

Whitbread has not played this season as a result of his operation, but he returned to training with Kenny Jackett's Lions last week.

He was due to take part in a behind-closed-doors friendly yesterday only for the game to fall foul of the bad weather.

Whitbread could soon be fit to play for Millwall's first team — but that seems unlikely to happen with the League One club keen to cash in on a player whose contract ends next summer.

The fee being touted for the American Under-23 cap in the summer was in the region of £700,000, but the asking price is likely to have fallen given that he hasn't played all season and now has just six months left on his New Den deal.

Swansea are likely to face competition for Whitbread's signature — he almost joined big-spending Huddersfield before the emergency loan window closed last month and they are still thought to be interested. Peterborough United agreed a fee for Whitbread last summer, while there have also been rumours of interest from Leeds.

Known as a footballing central defender, Whitbread came close to signing for Swansea in August.

Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins revealed then that Sousa is a big admirer of the former Liverpool youngster, and said Swansea could move again for him in January.

Cardiff captain Mark Hudson targets six point return (Dec 24) 00:10

Captain Mark Hudson says Cardiff need to claim maximum points from their two festive fixtures to keep the pressure on the Championship's front-runners.

The fourth-placed Bluebirds are three points off West Brom in second and trail leaders Newcastle by 13 points.

Bottom-club Plymouth are the visitors to Cardiff City Stadium on Boxing Day before Cardiff travel to next-to-bottom Peterborough United on Monday.

"We've got to keep our foot on the gas and keep going," said Hudson, 27.

"If you said at the beginning of the season we are going to be third and still pushing, we are going to take that.

"We are not even at half way. We are not getting carried away. There's still a long, long way to go."

The Bluebirds have turned their form around after a winless November saw them drop out of the top six.

But three wins on the bounce against Preston, West Bromwich Albion and Middlesbrough has seen Dave Jones' side back in contention.

Newport boss Holdsworth pulls off treble transfer coup (Dec 23) 13:10

NEWPORT County manager Dean Holdsworth has pulled off a triple transfer coup just in time for Christmas.
The table-topping Exiles squad has been severely hit by injuries in recent weeks and the manager has acted decisively, bringing in a new defender, midfielder and extending the deal of an attacker already at the club.
Holdsworth has swooped to sign defender Aaron Morris, a current Wales U21 international with Cardiff City, on an initial one-month loan. He has agreed a similar deal to sign the vastly experienced 28-year old midfielder Ashley Nicholls who joins from Bishop’s Stortford, also for an initial month, pending the paperwork being concluded in Nicholls’ case.
Morris, 21, has featured four times for Wales U21s in the current campaign under boss Brian Flynn and is a first year professional at the Bluebirds. Nicholls, a graduate of Ipswich’s academy, arrives after spells with Darlington, Rushden and Diamonds, Grays, Boston and Maidenhead United.
However, perhaps the most exciting news for supporters is that Kerry Morgan, the popular forward on loan from Swansea City, has agreed to stay for the remainder of the season, a move backed by his parent club.
These transfers will not impact Holdsworth’s plan to sign a central defender once the transfer window opens in January and with Ashan Holgate, Danny Rose, Nathan Davies, Dave Gilroy and Takumi Ake all sidelined by injury, and come at a perfect time according to the boss.
“It’s perfect timing for us really, we’re thrilled to welcome Aaron and Ashley on board and they can both contribute for us at a time when we’re a little short,” Holdsworth said.
"Aaron has the right pedigree, physique and ability to make an impact and he’s desperate for some game time. I’ve spoken in depth to Terry Burton at Cardiff and it’s a win, win move for both clubs, particularly with Paul (Bignot) facing a suspension,” added Holdsworth.
"Ashley Nicholls is a player who has been on our radar, he’s an excellent player with a full-time player’s mentality and I was shocked to see his name on a circular, we’ve moved quickly to get him.
"With Ashan Holgate, Danny Rose and Nathan Davies all out, we needed a fresh face and Ashley is a winner, he’s been a captain at a lot of his clubs and I love to sign leaders."
Morgan provides a welcome boost as well and Holdsworth is thrilled to have him staying on.
“Kerry’s a great prospect and has done excellently for us, he has a very good attitude, a desire to do well for this football club and the lads love him, he’s a big part of things here," he said.

Brace looking to redress festive results (Dec 23) 13:00

Not having won a festive fixture against the Reds Town manager Deryn Brace is looking to set the record straight and put an end to Llanelli's sequence of holiday wins. With Saturday's game against Champions Rhyl a victim of the freezing weather Brace is confident that his squad has the quality to secure some festive cheer.
“I was disappointed at Saturday’s postponement. I really wanted it on, but of course only if the pitch was playable and safe. It would have been a good test for us. I honestly believe that if the boys perform to their maximum we can beat anybody on our day. It’s just looking for that consistency.
“Llanelli games are always exciting affairs. There’s usually plenty of goals but obviously they’ve had the upper hand against us in the last couple of years.

“Earlier in the season we played them in the cup down at their place. I thought we did fantastically well but obviously the result got away from us. So we need to learn from that. We’ll need to be stronger and defend certain situations better.
Apart from a couple of doubts Brace is confident that he will have a full squad available for the holiday games.
“Nicky Palmer has taken a knock to his knee and we’re hoping Dyfan Pierce is going to be available. If Wednesday’s game goes ahead he’ll take part in that. So apart from a couple of doubts everyone else should be fine and available.

Dinas on the up as Kinsey calls the tune (Dec 22) 13:00

DINAS Powys have climbed steadily away from danger in the MacWhirter Welsh Football League having taken seven points from three matches.

They now stand just below halfway in the First Division table, in 10th, and manager Danny Kinsey is delighted with the team’s progress.

The 6ft 5in Kinsey, 37 and a former Dinas, Barry Town, Llanelli, Grange Quins and Cardiff Civil Service defender, has steered Dinas to wins against West End (3-2) and Aberaman Athletic (2-1), plus a 1-1 draw at Barry Town in their last outing.

Dinas, whose match against Cardiff Corries was called off on Saturday along with all other fixtures in Division One, now have a break before taking on Ely Rangers at home in a League match on Saturday, January 9 (2pm).

That is followed by a trip to Afan Lido on Wednesday, January 13 (7.30pm).

Kinsey’s team have shown great heart and desire during their unbeaten mini-run, coming from behind each time.

Clayton Jones puts Barry Town bid on hold (Dec 21) 15:00

WELSH businessman Clayton Jones has called a halt on his bid to buy Barry Town Football Club – over fears about player insurance.

Former Pontypridd Town chairman Jones has had an offer which adds up to more than £200,000 accepted, but he says: “I remain keen to buy the club, but, for me, there is an issue over players’ insurance.

“We need that resolved before we can go any further. The deal will not be done until the current owner, Stuart Lovering, guarantees that he will take responsibility for any insurance claims arising.

“I am willing to meet with Stuart Lovering at any point to resolve any issues that need to be sorted out.”

Sources close to the football club believe Barry do have player insurance, while MacWhirter Welsh League officials have taken action by writing to all clubs last week asking them to provide evidence of their insurance to cover players.

Jones, whose businesses include bus company St David’s Travel, the Greenfly Bar in Bedwas and Legends Health and Fitness in Hopkinstown, has been in talks with Lovering, with a view to buying both the football club and social club at Jenner Park.

Former ENTO Aberaman owner David Morgan was keen to buy Barry earlier this season, but later withdrew his offer when the two sides could not reach agreement.

Ardent Cardiff City fan Jones tried to buy the club in 2003, but it was Lovering who took charge of a club already on the slide.

Welsh Premier plans continue to provoke consternation (Dec 21) 07:00

WELSH PREMIER secretary John Deakin appears to be having second thoughts on the 44-match Super League programme agreed by clubs.

The decision to play more matches than any league in Europe is raising objections from clubs who see it as a route to possible financial ruin.

But Haverfordwest chairman John Summons has come forward with an idea that appears to meet with Deakin’s approval.

“We believe another EGM should be called of clubs who will be in the league next season, when they are known,” he said.

“By doing this the issue can be dealt with again by clubs who will have to live with the consequences of this decision.

“The new format was decided in a mad five minutes with no discussions as to how clubs will be able to meet commitments.

“There was total disregard to the inevitable fixture chaos.”

Despite the new 44-game format having been agreed on a 9-6 split vote with one abstention and two clubs not present at the Newtown meeting, Deakin is obviously aware of the unease in some quarters.

Responding to Summons’ view, Deakin added to the conjecture when he said: “There is no hurry to decide the fixture format for next season.

“It’s a constructive point of view at a time when a lot of hot air is being spouted about this particular point.

“But a democratic vote was taken which went 9-6 in favour of a 44-match programme.”

Some clubs feel it is unfair that others who have no chance of making the new structure voted for the plan.

This includes Cefn Druids, who have since made it known they will not be able to meet the ground criteria. Welshpool, the other club who cannot qualify on ground criteria, did not attend the vote.

Caersws, who have little chance of making the cut, also voted for a structure that will certainly not affect them.

Haverfordwest favour a 22-match programme with top six and bottom six then playing each other twice more to settle title and relegation issues. This would increase the number of matches per season to 32.

Porthmadog boss Tomi Morgan, whose club abstained, slammed the ballot result.

But he said: “The alternative is to split the league into a top six and bottom six and then you could have one team from the south grouped with five from the north. What sort of travelling problems will that create?”

Newtown chairman Mike Jones has raised a further crucial issue over grant aid that could impact on the ability of clubs to meet the ground criteria.

That would throw the whole Super League idea into chaos.

Jones said: “The uncertainty over the availability of grant aid is adding to the tension – and the clock is ticking away for the deadline for compliance.

“We understand clubs can, if they wish, start work on their stadia without any guarantees of funding.

“I don’t think so. You wouldn’t find that sort of gamble in any normal business plan submitted to the banks.”

Holdsworth praises County battlers after late show (Dec 21) 07:00

IT was the late, late show for County as Dean Holdsworth’s charges moved 12 points clear of nearest rivals Dover Athletic.

Only 30 seconds remained when Charlie Henry, benefiting from the slippery nature of the pitch as his marker fell, steadied himself to hammer home from the edge of the area.

The strike brought the biggest cheer on a bitterly cold afternoon, County supporters soon filing out with smiles on their faces knowing that the Exiles had taken another massive step towards the Blue Square South title.

But boss Holdsworth was refusing to get carried away by the double-figure lead at the top, admitting: “I didn’t want the game to go ahead.

“I knew that my side would struggle on that surface. In fact, I knew both sides would struggle – and that proved to be the case.

“But we have about six players in the team who are match-winners and it was a great strike from Charlie to win the game.

“There is still plenty of work to do here and the players will go again this week.

“I don’t think we’ve got a foot in the door (regards the title).

“But what we have shown is if you want to be champions you have to grind out results when things are not going your way.”

Holdsworth admitted the quality on view was low, but he said the “three points were vital.”

He said: “When things are not going your way you still have to keep plugging away.

“That was the case against a well-organised Staines side.

“I keep telling my side that we have to keep going for 95 minutes and to believe that they can score if they keep the faith.

“It’s not always going to be pretty and no-one has a divine right to win games.

“We’re top of the league and we know teams will work harder against us.

“But it’s one of the strongest dressing rooms I have ever been in.”

Full marks to the County ground staff for getting the game on, especially as Cardiff City’s fixture with Leicester down the road had fallen victim to the freezing conditions.

But attractive football was always going to be at a premium and the game was heading for a dour draw until Henry’s late intervention.

Henry was to be commended for taking a sure touch and steadying himself before firing goalwards with his left foot.

It was a cruel blow for the visitors, who deserved at least a point and are still the only team to beat County in the league this season.

Indeed, Staines will be cursing Michael Kamara missing a golden chance moments before Henry broke the deadlock in dramatic fashion.

Holdsworth and his players are well on their way to making club history this season.

Tate surprised by Swansea’s lofty Christmas position (Dec 21) 07:00

STAND-IN skipper Alan Tate admits Swansea City’s rise into the Christmas play-off positions has taken him by surprise.

The Swans head into the festive celebrations in fifth spot, despite a summer of turmoil which saw boss Roberto Martinez decamp to the Premier League and star men Jason Scotland and Jordi Gomez join the Spaniard at Wigan.

But new manager Paulo Sousa has galvanised Swansea to such an extent that 2010 could be the year when the club’s Premier League aspirations are fulfilled.

“If you’d said at the start of the season we would have been fifth at Christmas I would have said no,” said Tate, who again led by example at Hillsborough in the absence of the injured Garry Monk.

“Being honest, considering what went on in the summer and the teams in the league, I thought we’d be around 10th or 11th.

“Anyone here would have taken fifth place at Christmas but we’ve adapted well to the change around and that’s all you can do.

“It’s a massive improvement on last season and hopefully we’ll keep going.

“Finishing in this position will give us a chance to be promoted to the Premier League and that’s everyone’s goal.

“But it would be ridiculous to talk about promotion right now because there’s so many teams in there who have strong squads.

“Sheffield United, Middlesbrough and QPR will also get themselves back into it, but we seem to be OK defensive-wise and if we can score more goals then we’ll give ourselves a chance.”

Tate revealed Swansea had planned to go for the jugular against their Wednesday hosts, who parted company with manager Brian Laws last week after nine games without a win and five without a goal.

Welsh league chiefs bemoan postponements (Dec 20) 15:00

WELSH League chiefs were left with a headache last night after the number of games postponed this season rocketed to the 150 mark.

Already the season has been extended by a week to May 15 and assistant secretary Tony Griffiths admitted that if there was another Saturday like yesterday, a further extension would have to be considered.

The only match to survive came in the Third Division where South Gower defeated Risca United 2-1.

And the hosts threatened to score a hatful against struggling opponents who rarely threatened. Adam Withey gave South Gower the lead after just 10 minutes and it remained 1-0 until the game entered the last quarter when Kevin Miller netted to increase the advantage.

Risca got a consolation goal seven minutes from the end, but they had to play second fiddle to a well-organised South Gower outfit.

Swans in play off position with victory over the Owls (Dec 20) 05:00

Darren Pratley's two goals condemned Sean McAuley to a losing start as Sheffield Wednesday caretaker boss.

The midfielder took just five minutes to put Swansea in charge, Gorka Pintado laying the ball on for Pratley to take in his stride and beat Lee Grant.

Wednesday rallied and it took a good save from Dorus de Vries to keep out Jermaine Johnson's fierce shot.

But the Owls then struggled and Pratley struck a second goal, meeting Nathan Dyer's low cross at the near post.

Wednesday parted company with Brian Laws last weekend but McAuley was unable to inspire an improvement as Swansea maintained their push for promotion.

The Owls are now winless in the last 10, having lost the last six and face the harsh reality of relegation if they do not make drastic improvements.

Wednesday could not have made a worse start as they fell behind to the first meaningful attack of the game in the fifth minute.

Pintado picked the ball up on the left and flighted a fine pass over the top and, with Wednesday trying to play the offside trap, Pratley ran clear before slotting the ball past goalkeeper Grant.

The hosts responded positively, though, and nearly levelled twice in a minute.

First Johnson's 25-yard drive was palmed over by De Vries and then from the resulting corner, Darren Purse's header was beaten away by the Dutch keeper.

Johnson was a continued threat on the wing but wasted possession, while the hosts were always vulnerable to the Swansea counter-attack.

And so it proved nine minutes before the interval as Pratley got his and Swansea's second with a wonderfully-crafted goal.

There was an interchange of passes before Andrea Orlandi set the dangerous Dyer free.

The winger beat his full-back before centring for Pratley, who met the cross with a low and powerful shot from 12 yards out to bag his fourth of the campaign.

McAuley's men did improve after the break and controlled the majority of the possession, but their lack of creativity in the final third told and De Vries had very little to do.

Substitute Francis Jeffers did have a golden opportunity to get one back when he found himself in space in the penalty area but a heroic piece of defending by Swans skipper Alan Tate saw Jeffers' shot blocked.

Swansea did not try to force the pace in the second period and seemed content to sit on their lead.

However, as much as Wednesday huffed and puffed they were not able to make the breakthrough and were subjected to a chorus of boos at the full-time whistle.

Newport open up 12 point gap with home win over Staines (Dec 20) 05:00
The Season of Dreams continued for County and the roar which greeted the winning goal could almost have been heard at the Theatre of Frost 15 miles to the south west where Cardiff City’s promotion clash with Leicester City fell to the elements. It was probably a borderline decision by referee Kevin Morris to give this game the go-ahead and, while conditions underfoot were difficult, County fans in a tremendous pre Christmas crowd of 1,460 will feel that he got it right. Staines were every bit as difficult to play against as they had been at Wheatsheaf Park when they were the only side to beat County in a Blue Square South match this season, but they had no answer to the piece of brilliance that won the game. The match was in its final minute when Kerry Morgan played the ball in from the left for Charlie Henry to control it and drill a left foot shot past the keeper’s outstretched left hand just as he had done in each of the previous two games. As Dean Holdsworth said, it was a special moment and there are going to be many more of those. County reach the halfway point in the season with 50 points, a dozen more than their closest challengers Dover who have played a game more. A Happy Christmas indeed

Cardiff target Wilshere linked with Burnley loan move (Dec 19) 08:00

CARDIFF CITY’S bid to lure Jack Wilshere looks doomed to failure with the England prodigy seemingly set for a loan move to Burnley.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger admitted he was considering letting the 17-year-old England U21 international go to Turf Moor.

But the final decision will rest with Wilshere, who has made two first-team appearances and been a part of Arsenal’s back-up squad this season as they have battled injuries.

Wenger admitted the idea was floated by Burnley manager Owen Coyle before the 1-1 midweek draw at Turf Moor.

Cardiff – who are just three points adrift of an automatic promotion position in the Championship – plan to strengthen in the new year if finance can be raised.

And Bluebirds boss Dave Jones is reportedly keen on taking Wilshere – who has earned rave reviews at Arsenal – on loan at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Local welsh premier league preview (Dec 19) 08:00

CARMARTHEN TOWN boss Deryn Brace wants his side to toughen up mentally for the visit of champions Rhyl today.

The Old Gold are hovering just outside the top 10 and Brace believes it will be a difficult new year if his players fail to meet the challenge of playing Rhyl, Llanelli (twice) and The New Saints in successive games.

“I expect a maximum 12 points – no problem,” Brace quipped. “Seriously, this is a very important period in our season and we must pick up points from these four matches.”

Llanelli travel to improving Airbus UK with manager Andy Legg anticipating a much tougher battle than the 4-0 romp his side enjoyed at Broughton last year.

Sean Cronin returns from suspension for Neath’s trip to Connah’s Quay, while Liam Hancock will undergo a late fitness test on a broken nose.

Port Talbot seek to make it 19 points from seven matches when lowly Cefn Druids visit.

Newtown boss Darren Ryan blasted his players after the 5-2 home defeat to Bangor City last week so he will be demanding a vast improvement when fellow strugglers Porthmadog visit today.

Haverfordwest, another side just outside the Super League qualification cut-off point, will be hopeful of recording a third away win at Welshpool.

Last night the icy conditions at Park Avenue didn’t seem to suit Aberystwyth who went 2-0 down to visitors Caersws thanks to a double strike by Mark Griffiths in the sixth and 15th minutes.

It was a different story after the break as the home side came out firing and goals by Luke Bowen after 53 minutes and Aneurin Thomas on the hour levelled matters. Aberystwyth’s Bowen snatched his second in the 80th minute for a 3-2 win.

County's Bignot happy to avoid spotlight (Dec 19) 07:50

Newport County’s Paul Bignot doesn’t grab the headlines too often and he’s hoping it stays that way as the Exiles gear up for their most important Christmas period in years.

The Exiles face four games in 13 days over the festive season, meeting Staines at home today before travelling to Worcester on Boxing Day and then hosting Dorchester on December 28 and Worcester on New Years Day.

Already ten points clear at the summit of the Conference South, the Exiles can put some serious daylight between themselves and their rivals with a successful return in the next couple of weeks.

They are guaranteed to make headlines with some bumper crowds expected in that time, but defender Paul Bignot is happy to keep flying under the radar.

“A supporter asked me a couple of weeks ago when I was going to be in the paper, I told him I would prefer to stay out of the headlines and just keep going on the field,” he said.

“As a defence we are very proud of what we’ve achieved so far this season and heading into the Christmas period, we feel confident we can push on even further.

“But I don’t think any of us defenders want headlines, we’re happy for the likes of Craig Reid and Sam Foley to get the plaudits!”

County’s rearguard certainly deserves plenty of credit after conceding just nine goals in the league all season but Bignot insists he never doubted the capabilities of the Exiles.

Pontypridd aiming high in Welsh League (Dec 18) 11:50

PONTYPRIDD Town look to strengthen their position at the top of MacWhirter Welsh League Division Three tomorrow – and bring chairman Phil Gibb’s vision a step nearer.

Gibb’s arrival at the club, with a stated aim of returning to Division One, has brought results on the pitch under player-manager Alan Davies.

Davies, who earned England international honours at junior level, played for Manchester City and Southampton before playing more than 400 games for Burton Albion under Nigel Clough.

Former Ponty player Dean Morris came in as his assistant with Mike Jones, Neil Davies, Ryan Jenkins, Paul Dawes and Nathan Hosgood arriving from the First Division.

Anthony Waters also made the switch from Bridgend Town to form a free-scoring front line with young Ian Traylor and Richard Jago.

They have taken Ponty – who entertain Troedyrhiw tomorrow (2pm) – to the top of the table on goal difference from Corus.

Paulo Sousa urges Swansea to attack managerless Owls (Dec 18) 11:50

Swansea manager Paulo Sousa says his side must go on the attack against managerless Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough on Saturday.

Sixth-place Swansea are looking to get back to winning ways after defeat at home to Nottingham Forest last weekend.

The Owls sacked boss Brian Laws after slipping into the Championship's bottom three after losing at Leicester.

"It's not easy to play against teams when they lose a manager," Sousa told BBC Sport Wales.

"But we want to win the game. We want to put our identity on the game, and from the beginning we want to press them all the time.

"We want to put them under pressure, we want to score before them to put them under more pressure and for ourselves to be more comfortable in the game."

Wednesday have lost their last four league games and not scored in five.

Caretaker boss Sean McAuley has called on his side to have some belief but Sousa's intentions are to cast doubt into the hosts' minds by taking control early on.

And to do that, Swansea need to find the net - something they have struggled to do despite their lofty position in the Championship.

They have scored just 18 goals in 21 games but do benefit from conceding just 18, the second meanest defence in the division.

On-loan striker Lee Trundle is top scorer with five league goals, with fellow frontman Craig Beattie scoring three, while defender Ashley Williams and midfielder Darren Pratley each have two. And Sousa is keen for goals to come from all over the team, not just the strikers.

"We are training hard to achieve better levels in respect to scoring," he added.

"We create so much, but we are not happy with the number of goals we score.

"They have the opportunities to score during games and we want to see players from other positions to score goals."

Dean Holdsworth has ambitious targets for Newport County (Dec 18) 11:50

NEWPORT County boss Dean Holdsworth has issued his players a challenge for the rest of the season.

Holdsworth has guided County to a 10-point cushion at the top of the Blue Square South.

And ahead of tomorrow’s visit of FA Cup giant-killers Staines – the only side to beat them in the league this season – Holdsworth has set his sights on claiming a place in club history.

“We have made our home ground a fortress and scored loads of goals and we deserve the respect that our position merits at the moment,” he said.

“But I want this squad of players to be the best the supporters have seen in the last 20 years.

“I’ll push them to higher and new boundaries to obtain that status and it’s not beyond them.

“We played Farnborough last Saturday without four key players and won against a club that is free-spending and has a much higher playing budget than ours.”

While he will not reveal a points target, Holdsworth has no intention of going near the usual figure of five to seven losses which promoted teams normally manage.

“Sometimes you only get this scenario once in a lifetime,” he said. “But they can make history.

“They have already broken two or three records and if they continue to do what they are doing there could be bigger ones ahead.

“We want points on the board now and the sooner we get them the better, I know what these lads are capable of and their confidence is growing but measured.”

Holdsworth also played down talk of revenge against Staines.

“I tend not to look back but forward and this is just another game that we will go out and try and win,” he said.

“The supporters might just have to be a bit patient on this occasion.”

In a busy Christmas period, Holdsworth’s men play at a double-header with Worcester City – away on Boxing Day and at home on New Year’s Day – and host Dorchester Town on December 28.

Meanwhile, County have stepped up their plans for next season by tying two more key players to new contracts.

Skipper Gary Warren and midfielder Danny Rose have signed new deals which will keep them at Spytty Park until at least April 2012.

“It’s key to keep the squad together, to keep that continuity going, and protect ourselves as a club,” said a delighted Holdsworth.

“Along with Sam Foley, who signed last week, Gary and Danny are big players for us and they’ve earned their extensions.

“They are big personalities on and off the pitch and they’ve played a big part in our success.”

Points are the best gift for Merthyr (Dec 18) 11:50

MERTHYR Tydfil boss Garry Shephard knows what he wants for Christmas – enough points to move his side clear of the Zamaretto League relegation zone.

Having wiped out their pre-season 10-point deduction, the Martyrs moved to within a point of pulling clear of the bottom four with their 1-0 win over Swindon Supermarine.

And Shephard has targeted moving up the Premier Division table over the next three games, starting at Leamington tomorrow.

“We’ve been playing well and losing, yet it was scrappy match last week and we won,” explained Shephard,

“It’s all about the points, and if we can get six or seven points from the next three games, that would be a great return.

“We would be well clear of the danger zone.”

While that would be cause for celebration, Shephard is hoping his players refrain from too much fun over the festive period.

“While I don’t mind the guys having a couple of beers at home with their families, I really don’t want them staying out clubbing till 2-3am,” he said.

“There will be plenty of time for that at the end of the season.

“They will not only be letting themselves down, but their colleagues as well.

“We have games coming left, right and centre and it’s a good chance to make up some much-needed ground up the table.”

Steelman Rose to miss Live Derby Clash (Dec 17) 12:10

Port Talbot Town's leading striker Martin Rose, who is undoubtedly one of the top forward's in the League will not be able to showcase his talents in the Festive Derby match against Neath, which is to be shown live on S4/C on 27th December. The Portsmouth-born marksman picked up his fifth booking of the season at Bala on Saturday and his one-match suspension will see him ruled out of the Neath clash.

Rose, who was the League's second top-scorer last term, was booked in injury time at Maes Tegid last weekend for kicking the ball away in frustration.

He will go into that game without midfielder Gareth Phillips who was sent-off on Saturday and he starts a three match suspension, whilst six other players were booked in the 1-1 draw at Bala.

Jones expects another physical encounter this weekend, but he is also expecting a better reaction from his players.

"Our discipline has also been documented in the press this week and we now have too many players close to earning themselves suspensions as well as already being without Gareth Phillips" said Jones.

"While our discipline has improved this season compared to last, we must realise that the higher up the table we are the more physical opposition sides are in their approach to playing us. The players and ourselves as the management team must learn to deal with this as we challenge at the top of the table as we cannot afford to lose players."

Swansea take Brest defender Gregory Lorenzi on trial (Dec 17) 12:00

Swansea City have taken French centre back Gregory Lorenzi on trial at the Liberty Stadium this week.

The 25-year-old from Ligue 2 side Stade Brestois 29 will train with the Swans squad for three days this week.

The right-sided player, who is 6ft 1in, started his career as a youth team player at FC Nantes.

Lorenzi then joined Excelsior Mouscron, before moving to SC Bastia in 2005 and then being snapped up by current club Brest in 2008.

He has since made 28 appearances for the Brittany club and chipped in with two goals.

Bluebirds unveil golden ticket plan (Dec 17) 01:10

CARDIFF City are asking fans to fund their push for promotion – and offering the chance of a free “golden ticket” to watch Premier League football in return.

The novel scheme, which will see early season-ticket buyers given a refund if the team goes up next season, is a bid to raise £3m to spend in the January transfer window.

The Bluebirds, who currently lie third in the Championship, were hoping to have Malaysian investment in the club by the end of this year but acknowledge it will not now necessarily happen until at least after the transfer window closes.

Under the scheme, billed as an “ideal” Christmas present to fans, the club has guaranteed that anyone taking up the offer by buying a new season ticket before December 31 will get their money refunded should the club go up.

The offer will also apply to the 3,000 or so fans who have already bought season tickets, which sell for an average of £280.

The payback to fans would be financed from the £40m prize for climbing into the Premier League.

Chairman Peter Ridsdale said: “We need fans to back our manager and get their season ticket by December 31. If we are promoted we will give them their money back for next season.

“This is a great opportunity for our supporters to say we are in this together.

“It won’t cost them any more than it would have done anyway and they will have the real excitement of following us through to the end of the season knowing that if we are promoted you get your money back.

“Dave Jones came up with this idea and the board have said yes.”

This latest offer is on top of a five-year price freeze.

“Back us and we will strengthen,” said Jones. “Back me. Back the team. Back your football club.”

Exiles aces stay at Spytty Park (Dec 17) 01:00

NEWPORT County have stepped up their plans for next season by tying two more key players to new contracts.

Skipper Gary Warren and midfield playmaker Danny Rose signed new deals last night which will keep them at Spytty Park until at least April 2012.

The news comes just a week after forward Sam Foley agreed to stay for a further two years and, with top scorer Craig Reid also tied up until April 2011, it means the Exiles have protected four of their best assets at a crucial time in the season.

With his side 10 points clear at the top of the Blue Square South and promotion a real possibility, manager Dean Holdsworth is already planning for next season with general manager Tim Harris.

Holdsworth is delighted that four of his key players are signed up in an attempt to ward off interest from other clubs and also revealed that he is in talks with other members of the squad about new deals.

“It’s key to keep the squad together, to keep that continuity going, and protect ourselves as a club,” said Holdsworth. “Along with Sam, who signed last week, Gary and Danny are big players for us and they’ve earned their extensions..

“They are big personalities on and off the pitch and they’ve played a big part in our success.

“I’m very pleased that they have agreed to stay and hopefully they will be the first of many. We’re always planning for the future and I’ve already talked to two or three others about new contracts as well.”

Warren and Rose both emphasised that the fantastic team spirit in the squad was a key factor in agreeing to commit their futures to the club.

“There have been a lot of new faces coming in but we’ve all gelled well and we are all friends on and off the pitch,” said Warren.

“I’m very pleased to be staying on and I just hope we can go on to finish the job this season and clinch promotion.”

“Team spirit is a massive factor in our success,” agreed Rose, who is currently sidelined with a foot injury.

“The gaffer is great with us and he’s kept the nucleus of the squad together from the end of last season.

“We’re a tight group now. We all believe that this club is going places and I want to be a part of that.”

Goytre make it through to quarter finals of league cup (Dec 16) 14:30

RICHARD French knocked in a hat-trick, as Goytre United came through 3-2 against Ammanford at Glenhafod Park in the last-16 stage of the Welsh League’s Nathaniel Cars Cup.

However, they conceded two late penalties to keep the tie alive right to the end.

French struck first in the 28th minute when scoring from close range, and his second effort in the 58th minute was a mirror reflection.

Top scorer Richard Ryan set up French’s third goal in the 70th minute, but the Rice Roaders hit back late on.

Richard Lewis converted penalties in the 78th and 82nd minutes, but the Port Talbot side clung on.

In the quarter-finals, Goytre will host Cambrian & Clydach, who gained a 3-1 home win over third-division South Gower.

Despite creating plenty of chances during the first half, the Seasiders went in two goals down with Jason Bertorelli making it 3-0 on the restart.

And although Andrew Ferguson pulled a goal back, it was the Rhondda Valley club’s night.

Huge test for Carmarthen as Rhyl visit Richmond Park (Dec 16) 14:30

DERYN Brace knows Carmarthen Town face a huge test of their mental strength on Saturday when Rhyl visit Richmond Park (2.30).

The reigning Welsh Premier League champions lie third in the table.

And Brace wants his side, who were narrowly beaten at Belle Vue at the start of the season, to launch their festive campaign in style.

"We need to pick up as many points as possible over the festive period because it gives you a springboard to push on in the new year," said player-manager Brace.

"It's a tough assignment. The teams that we are playing are all the top teams so we cannot afford to be complacent because these teams are championship-winning teams.

"We are going to have to have to be focused and have our wits about us through every single game.

"We need to have more of a hardened mentality at home. Our performance at home is not that bad. It's the results that are concerning.

"What we need to do is turn the decent, positive performances into the results our performances deserve.

"Maybe these next few games will help us as these are the teams that will come and attack us.

"They will be teams that will be looking to win the game from the off and maybe that will suit us a little bit more."

Cardiff City boss Dave Jones has January shopping list (Dec 16) 14:30

DAVE Jones wants to bring in four players during the January transfer window with money raised from immediate season ticket sales – and he believes that will spark up Cardiff City’s promotion challenge.

The Bluebirds are currently third in the Championship and manager Jones said: “Every year I have been here we have got close, but never been able to push on because of all the things going on.

“We need a real push now. This is the right time, because of the position we are in, to have a big push at it.

“Surely, now, we have to strengthen. It wouldn’t be right to just rely on what we have. The players here want help. I want help.

“It would be fantastic for everybody, for the club and the fans, if we can all take the next step together.”

Jones came up with the extraordinary idea to give City fans the chance to watch Premier League football for FREE next season – if they buy new season tickets for the 2010-11 campaign before the end of 2009 and the club are promoted.

The board have backed Jones’ novel scheme – and they hope 10,000 people will take up the offer and give the manager around £3m towards a transfer kitty. If City are promoted, the payback would come from the £40m prize on offer for those going up.

“We are in the best position to earn promotion than for many a year,” said chairman Peter Ridsdale. “We need to know where we are coming from in terms of money available to spend on players. Money in now will allow us to spend. We will back Dave.”

Jones has already identified the players he wants, saying: “I need competition at centre-forward, I have to bring in some central midfield players and a wide player. I have told the directors four players are needed.”

Swans wait on Spanish duo on contact talks (Dec 15) 13:30

SWANSEA City are waiting for decisions from Andrea Orlandi and Angel Rangel as both players approach the end of their contracts.

Leon Britton's future has been in the spotlight since Paulo Sousa revealed last week that the midfielder is yet to sign what he called the best deal in Swansea history.

And it has now emerged that Swansea are also are seeking answers from Orlandi and Rangel as they attempt to tie the Spanish duo down.

Midfielder Orlandi, 25, and full-back Rangel, 27, see their current agreements expire at the end of the season.

And it is understood Swansea have held talks over extensions with both players — but as yet they have not reached a successful conclusion with either.

Chairman Huw Jenkins says he does not want to discuss individual players — but admits Britton is not the only Swansea squad member whose contract situation is up in the air.

"There are one or two players within the squad who, for whatever reason, are looking to keep their options open," Jenkins said.

"They are not accepting the terms that are on offer at this stage and, as a football club, we just have to accept that they are within their rights to do that."

Rangel revealed last week that he is just five starts away from triggering a clause in his current deal which would automatically entitle him to a 12-month extension.

But the former Terrassa man does not have to stay for the extra year and, as things stand, he will be free to talk to other clubs from January 1.

Swansea would be disappointed to lose Rangel, who has proved himself one of the most consistent full-backs in the Football League since arriving in Wales in 2007.

And it would also be a blow to see Orlandi depart given that the one-time Barcelona man is enjoying easily his best Swansea season under Sousa.

Orlandi, who has been switched from the wing to central midfield by the Portuguese, only signed a new one-year contract last summer.

Legg calls for Cardiff to back Dave Jones with January cash (Dec 15) 10:00

FORMER Cardiff City favourite Andy Legg says it’s time to back manager Dave Jones with cash – or risk losing him to richer clubs.

City’s third win in a row at Middlesbrough on Sunday saw them climb into third spot in the Championship.

Now, with winnable Christmas games against Leicester (home) and bottom two Plymouth (home) and Peterborough (away), Cardiff could be in an extremely strong position when the transfer window opens next month. “Dave Jones has been a great asset for the club having dealt with more than £5m worth of transfer fees,” said Legg.

“Every year he has had to build another side to be competitive again. But he will only do that for only so long. The club must back him in January to make that final push for the Premiership.

“If anybody has the know-how then Dave Jones has what it takes – but he needs a helping hand.”

Jones said after the 1-0 victory at Boro that he hopes to bring in new faces to create more competition for places in his squad.

The lack of numbers in Jones’ squad has proved City’s undoing over the past few seasons.

“He will have players in mind to bring in but I feel sorry for him year-on-year when he sees his team dismantled and then he has to start again,” added Legg.

“This has to be the season where all the stops are pulled out to get promotion. Like any manager, Dave is ambitious and he might not stay around for too much longer if the club’s financial resources don’t match his ambitions.

“He’s one of the best managers that Cardiff have had.”

Giggs has a new tool for bargaining with Fergie! (Dec 15) 10:00

RYAN Giggs declared himself totally shocked to have joined “genuine legends” as winners of the BBC Sports Personality of the Year – and then joked he may use the award to secure a good new contract with Manchester United.

Giggs, the most decorated player in English football history with a record 11th Premier League winners’ medal, beat Formula One champion and bookies favourite Jenson Button to the 2009 award, while world heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis finished third.

The 36-year-old Manchester United winger said: “The names of genuine legends of world sport are on this trophy. I never dreamed I would win it.

“I was honestly surprised just to be on the list of nominees.

“I have been lucky enough to win a lot of things in my career, playing with great players and under the greatest manager that ever lived, and playing for the greatest club.

“This is up there with all of that. I grew up watching this TV programme and to see all the people who have won it and to be up there with them, it’s unbelievable.”

Giggs is the first footballer to win the award since David Beckham in 2001, and the Welshman is to hold discussions with manager Sir Alex Ferguson about a new contract when his current deal expires at the end of the season.

“I might have to put this trophy on the table – if I’m struggling!” added Giggs.

“It was the first I had heard of it the other day so I was quite pleased.

“My contract ends at the end of the year but hopefully there will be another year after that.”

Giggs gained 29.4% of a public vote – 151,842 people voted for him.

Cambrian in League Cup action (Dec 15) 10:00

RHONDDA club Cambrian and Clydach are aiming for a place in the last 16 of the Nathaniel Car Sales League Cup tonight.

Cambrian host South Gower (7pm) in one of two third round ties being played tonight.

Bad weather has caused chaos with fixtures this season and MacWhirter Welsh League officials have already extended the season by one week, to Saturday, May 15.

Tonight, the two ties scheduled will bring the League Cup schedule back up to date.

The other tie sees Ammanford travel to Goytre United (7.30pm). That tie was due to be at Ammanford, but has been switched to Goytre’s Glenhafod Park.

Fourth round ties are to be played on or before January 9 and the first to be completed will be Afan Lido v AFC Llwydcoed on Tuesday, January 5 (7.30pm).

The rest of the fourth round draw is: AFC Porth v Croesyceiliog; Ammanford or Goytre United v Cambrian & Clydach or South Gower; Bridgend Town v Barry Town.

Afan Lido qualified for the fourth round of the League Cup with a win against Abertillery Bluebirds, 2-1 after extra time.

Jonathan Hood netted their winner.

Lido were without any of their three recognised strikers up front with Nathan White and Scot McCourbrey suspended and Mark Jones among the substitutes.

The new strike partnership of Damon Thomas and Gavin Jones led the way for Lido.

Bluebirds took the lead after 50 minutes and Jones equalised.

It was still 1-1 with two minutes left in extra time before substitute Hood netted the winner.

Lido also have big ambitions in the league and have applied for promotion to the Welsh Premier. They must finish in the top two if they are to achieve promotion.

Cardiff Corries are in a six-club bunch who are struggling near the foot of the table.

Caerleon are bottom on eight points, while the next six are covered by two points.

Bettws, Ely Rangers are on 12, Bridgend and West End on 13 and Pontardawe Town have 14. Corries were at home against Cambrian and Clydach, going down 5-2.

Cambrian went ahead in 90 seconds when they were gifted a soft goal, while Corries fought back to make it 1-1 when Richard Veale scored.

Within minutes Cambrian were back in front, but Rhys Yates hauled Corries level again at 2-2.

Then it was Cambrian’s turn again and they led 3-2 with only 23 minutes gone.

That was the half-time score and the second period started with Corries much the brighter and had most of the play inside the visitors half.

Sharp counter attacking play led to two goals, one midway through the half and another with 10 minutes left.

Gareth Delve was forced off by injury, early in the half, and he was replaced by youngster Gareth Cawley. James Vaughan went on late in defence.

Corries’ next home match is against Dinas Powys on Saturday.

Ton Pentre are struggling to find any sort of consistency. They followed a 6-1 win against West End by crashing 3-1 at Bryntirion Athletic. The home team had Nana Baah sent off after 14 minutes, but still powered into a 3-0 lead.

It wasn’t until the final 15 minutes, after Ton themselves were reduced to 10 men with Phil Clarke sent off, that they had any kind of bite.

Chris Jones scored for Ton, but they suffered a sixth league defeat this season

MacWhirter Welsh League round-up (Gwent) (Dec 15) 10:00

GOAL-TWINS Gareth Cullimore and Jason Thorn proved the difference at Cold Bath Road, where MacWhirter Welsh League Division One title-chasing Caldicot Town deepened Caerleon’s relegation worries with a 3-1 success.

In Division Two, Cwmbran Celtic consolidated second place by thrashing county neighbours Llanwern, while high-flying Aberbargoed Buds were held 1-1 by visiting Division Three rivals Abertillery Bluebirds.

Cullimore took his season’s league and cup total to 17 and former Caerleon marksman Thorn to 13 as Caldicot retained third position, while Caerleon remain bottom of the 18-strong section.

The victory for Caldicot made up somewhat for the previous week’s same-scoreline home defeat at the hands of Port Talbot-based leaders Goytre United.

Caerleon, on the other hand, lost for the eighth time in 12 outings, although at times they belied the fact they had only played three times since October 3.

Indeed, had home striker Luke Cueto not spurned a reasonable goal chance and then visiting goalkeeper James Smallcombe, first from a glancing Leon Spargo header then from a fierce Simon Truman shot, not produced two fine saves, then Caerleon may well have produced a positive result for themselves.

However, shortly after those couple of Smallcombe stops, both Thorn and Cullimore had struck within 55 seconds of each other on 76 minutes to ensure Caldicot posted a third successive league win at the venue.

“There’s no doubt about it, we simply had to bounce back from our defeat by Goytre and this was a big game for us,” admitted joint Caldicot boss Jason Pritchard, who is on charge alongside Simon Wetter.

“We were fortunate not to go 2-1 down and we were grateful to our goalkeeper (Smallcombe) for keeping us in contention. However, once we went 2-1 up and then quickly got a third, we took on a bit of control and ran out worthy winners.”

Caldicot had much better of the play before the break, but led only 1-0 at the interval thanks to a fourth-minute goal from midfielder David Lloyd.

Caerleon, to their credit, began the second period in determined fashion and levelled on 54 minutes via Matthew Hearne, who slotted home a penalty after Andrew Edwards had felled Lewis Grant.

Caerleon’s tails were now most certainly up, but Cullimore and Thorn put an end to their bid to land a shock win.

“We started like a side which hadn’t played much at all recently, but we did much better during the second half and could have taken the lead,” said Caerleon assistant manager Nicky Davies.

“But it really is simply all about putting your chances away and while we didn’t, Caldicot did – plus I thought they were a bit match fitter.” Celtic hosted sixth-placed Llanwern knowing the visitors had the upper hand over them in recent seasons with a number of victories. However Celtic hit their county rivals for six with striker Owen Llewellyn leading the way with a hat trick to take his campaign league and cup total to 10.

Fellow marksman Shane Williamson also got on the score sheet – as did Luke Sallis and Sean Matthews. “We are obviously extremely pleased with the result and delighted that we, at last, took so many chances in one game,” remarked Celtic chief Mickey Copeman.

“On a personal note, it’s my first victory over Llanwern boss Laurence Owen and that’s one of quite a few bogies we’ve buried this season.

“We only led 2-0 at the interval, so we’ve really got on top after it and a result like this is long overdue for us because we’ve been missing a whole lot of chances in most matches.”

Owen paid tribute to Celtic for their success, but felt easier saying nothing other than admitting his team had been “battered”.

There was another derby at Woodland Road, where home skipper Mark Morris scored the only goal as Croesyceiliog defeated visiting Tredegar Town 1-0. “I congratulated Tredegar’s manager (Andrew York) for the excellent way his side played attractive football and there was a short time in the second half when we couldn’t get near them,” revealed Croesyceiliog chief Gareth Morgan.

“But we dug in and we are very happy to have taken three points against such a good footballing team as Tredegar.”

Also putting a tick in the win column were struggling Cwmbran Town, who scored goals via Steve Hughes (2, including a penalty), Chris Wilson and Kristian Powell to see off visiting Newcastle Emlyn 4-1.

“We all knew that some team was going to get the backlash for the fact we’ve passed over so many goal-scoring opportunities this season,” said delighted Crows manager Barrie Hughes. “Now the trick is to find a bit more consistency over the coming months and we’ll be fine.”

Newport YMCA visited Caerau (Ely) and came away with a point after a remarkable comeback from being 3-0 down saw them eventually draw 3-3.

On target were David Pearce, Olly Beckett and Boris Emane-Bidza after manager Simon Pratt had changed the playing formation following three second-half substitutions.

Aberbargoed Buds striker Ross Fowler is the county’s top domestic scorer and his penalty in the 1-1 home draw with Abertillery Bluebirds was his 18th goal of the season – the visitors replying through Adam Bishop.

Not so very long ago Goytre headed the Division Three table, but their demise continued as they slumped to a 5-2 derby defeat at Monmouth Town, whose player-coach Andrew Smith also missed two penalties.

Netting for the Kingfishers were top scorer Phil Tranter (2). Jack Alderdice, Elliott Ford and 16-year-old Tom Wareham, while Goytre scored via Graham Mason and Lee Waddon (penalty).

Newport Civil Service have also been on the slide recently and their woes continued as both Steve Muir and Gareth Wysome were sent off in their 4-0 home defeat by Cwmaman Institute. Risca sought a second successive win when they visited Markham to face second-placed Corus Steel, but only had a Gary Moores goal to show for it in a 2-1 reverse. There are no mid-week games involving Gwent clubs.

Neath fortunate to be presented with a point (Dec 14) 13:00

A POINT was enough to return Neath to fourth spot in the Welsh Premier yesterday, but it was a fortunate outcome for Andy Dyer’s side who fell away badly after the break

The hosts created virtually nothing all afternoon and the only threat to an impressive Airbus rearguard came from Chris Llewellyn’s in-swinging corners and Ian Hillier’s long throws into the box.

These were dealt with competently, especially by central defenders Rhys Roberts and Mark Allen, whose last-ditch tackle on Neath’s Llewellyn in the final minute maintained the status quo.

But the Wingmakers, who remain eighth and look a good bet to be part of the super league next season, will rue several clear-cut chances in the second half that were wasted.

Ryan Edwards found ace striker Marc Lloyd Williams 10 yards out, but he slightly missed a perfect contact with his head and the ball flew wide.

Paul McManus had an even better opportunity minutes later but fired wide when one-on-one with goalkeeper Wyn Walters and substitute James McIntosh just failed to meet another headed opportunity crisply.

Ryan Edwards brought a sensational parry from Walters as the visitors piled forward in pursuit of a deserved win, but the stalemate held until the final whistle.

“I’ve got mixed feelings about the result as we had a number of chances to win it,” said Airbus manager Craig Harrison.

“I’m very proud of the boys, I thought they did brilliantly. We worked hard – we had to against their set-pieces – created the better chances and our goalkeeper has not had one single save to make all afternoon.”

“Our aim since day one of this season has been to finish in the top 10 and I firmly believe we have the players to achieve that.”

Eagles manager Andrew Dyer, who blasted his players after the match, admitted: “I’m very disappointed as we showed little desire and that is not acceptable.

“We were lucky to draw. I thought Airbus did fantastically well and looked a very good, well-organised side.

“But our statistician tells me we had 18 corners and 12 Ian Hillier long throws into the box and we totally failed to get onto the second ball.

“Sometimes in games like this, when defences are on top, you have to get into the heart of their box and win the ball.

“You cannot win pretty all the time.”

Llanelli back on top of Welsh Premier (Dec 14) 13:00

LLANELLI returned to the summit of the Welsh Premier with a convincing victory over the North Wales high-flyers at Stebonheath Park yesterday.

The Reds had lost the leadership on Friday to The New Saints, but they were in no mood to give the visitors an early Christmas present and seized the opportunity to do a thoroughly-professional job.

The hosts took the lead in the 13th minute with a shot from the edge of the box by Antonio Corbisiero and doubled their lead after 27 minutes with a penalty.

Referee Brian James adjudged Andrew Mumford to have been pushed in the back and, after much protesting by the visitors, Rhys Griffiths stepped up to beat Jon Hill-Dunt from the spot.

Chris Venables made it 3-0 with a neat finish from inside the box following a flowing Llanelli move and Griffiths completed the tally from a header.

Paul O’Neill headed home to grab a Prestatyn consolation, but it was no more than that.

The win sent Llanelli two points clear of Saints, who play Porthmadog tomorrow night.

Britton and Swansea City break off contract talks (Dec 14) 12:50

SWANSEA CITY star Leon Britton has hit out at manager Paulo Sousa for publicly revealing his contract negotiations have stalled.

But, while explaining any further discussions on his future have been postponed until the summer, the combative midfielder insisted he remains “100 per cent committed” to helping the Swans achieve their Premiership dream this season.

Yet Swansea accept that Britton could move on if January if a “ridiculous offer” comes in for the 27-year-old midfielder, who has clocked up more than 300 appearances since joining from West Ham in 2002.

Sousa chose to go public with the situation this week, revealing Britton had yet to sign what he described as “the biggest deal in the club’s history.”

Now Britton has broken his silence on the negotiations and said the situation was highly unlikely to be resolved until the end of the current campaign.

“I am surprised and disappointed that the nature of my contract talks have been made public,” he said in a prepared statement.

“My advisor has been talking with the club since mid-September in what have been amicable and productive discussions.

“At the last round of talks it was agreed that all further discussions would be postponed until the end of the season so that I can focus on my performances for the club.”

While he has not ruled out extending his eight-year stint in South Wales, Britton will be allowed to talk to other clubs in January.

But, despite reported interest from his former team-mate and manager Roberto Martinez at Wigan, the midfielder insisted his sole priority now will be helping the Swans push for promotion.

“I remain 100 per cent committed to Swansea City FC as my eight seasons here have proved,” he declared.

“And I will continue to give 100 per cent in every game I play between now and the end of the season with the ultimate aim of getting the club to the Premiership.

“Any further discussion regarding my contract will be resumed at the end of the season as agreed.”

Swansea City chairman Huw Jenkins last night said there were no issues with Britton as far as the club are concerned.

“We accept that every player has the right to make a decision in his best interest when he comes to the end of a contract,” said Jenkins.

“If he wants his agent to find other options from January onwards, we appreciate that is his right.

“But we still expect Leon to be fully focused and committed to Swansea.”

As to whether Britton could be sold in January, Jenkins added: “I think Leon is fully aware that we want him here until the summer no matter what.

“We will wait and see what happens in January because if someone comes and offers £10m for him I’d be mad to say we won’t consider it.”

Brilliant County on rampage (Dec 13) 11:30

Farnborough 1-3 Newport County

COUNTY made it through to the last 32 of the FA Trophy with a thrilling success away to Southern League leaders Farnborough.

There were good performances all over the park for County to leave manager Dean Holdsworth delighted at the end of the game.

“We played with fire in our belly and ice in our minds to win this match, and we showed great character,” he said.

Farnborough, like County, had suffered just one reverse in league matches this season and they made a bright start, though it was County that took the lead on 22 minutes with a sure strike from 20 yards from Charlie Henry after a great pass from Wayne Turk.

The home side, however, possessed plenty of attacking threat, but County appeared to put the issue to bed when Ashan Holgate struck two minutes inside the second half to give County a two-goal cushion after good play from Craig Reid.

However, referee Steve Daly took centre stage with a succession of bizarre decisions as the game drew to an action-packed climax.

Farnborough’s Gary Holloway was lucky to stay on the field after pushing over County substitute Josh Hartrick, but he escaped with a caution and a minute later netted for the home side with a header from a corner.

The Hampshire side played like men possessed as they laid siege to the Newport goal and Daly swung the odds in their favour as the game went into added time by showing a very harsh red card to County’s Paul Bignot for a second caution.

But before play could be restarted, following a consultation with his assistant, Mr Daly dealt out a similar punishment to Farnborough skipper Steve Robinson.

Reid had the last word for County, however, by netting a fine goal after more great play from Henry.

“We have brilliance in our team,” said Holdsworth.

Bala end Port Talbot's winning run (Dec 13) 11:30

THERE was an exciting conquest at Lakeland where Port Talbot were looking to maintain their good form but they were held to a 1-1 draw at Bala Town.

It was the hosts who had the better start and they took a fourth-minute lead when central defender Matthew Rees made a hash of a clearance and the ball fell kindly to the feet of Owain Roberts, who prodded the ball home from close range.

The visitors came back strong and had all of the territorial advantage without really threatening Leon Bimpson’s goal.

But they did get back on level terms in the 23rd minute when a Scott Barrow corner looked as if a resulting header from Martin Rose had crossed the line. The referee thought otherwise but Neil Thomas rifled home the rebound.

Bala came close to restoring their lead but Danny Jellicoe missed when he should have done better.

On 70 minutes Port Talbot were reduced when Gareth Phillips was given a straight red card following a strong challenge and, although it took his side down to 10 men, they did finish the stronger.

In fact, in the 88th minute everyone inside the stadium thought they had won this encounter when Matty Rees turned in a corner from the right but the goal was disallowed to the astonishment of the 22 players on the pitch.

Talbot boss Mark Jones said: “We still can’t fathom out why the goal was disallowed, the Bala defenders were more mystified than me.”

Bala boss Colin Caton also admitted to thinking it was a goal but after watching the replay said the referee’s decision was right.

Sousa: no January sales solution for Swans (Dec 13) 11:30

PAULO SOUSA admitted Swansea City once again paid the price for failing to make the most of their chances.

But he insisted the reality means he won’t be able to find a solution in the January transfer window. Sousa said his side played into Forest’s hands by not grabbing a goal when on top in the first half and then finding it too tough to break down Billy Davies’ well-drilled outfit after the break.

But he is adamant the answers will have to come from within, without the major funds to bring in further attacking power.

The Portuguese said: “It is frustrating when we do not score when we are on top, especially against teams when there is not a lot between us in the table.”

He added: “When it is not easy but you are in control and have good opportunities to score and you don’t, it makes the difference.

“But we have the players to do it. We haven’t scored many goals but we have the players.

“Yes, in January I would like to change things – but perhaps I should ask the Nottingham chairman to give us a little money to buy some players.

“We have to know our reality – we can’t dream too much. To buy you need money.”

But Sousa said that he was happy with his lot, adding: “We want to win these games and we can – if you look back at the game, it was game we could have won if we scored when we had created the chances.

“I am not frustrated because the team is doing well.

“We are doing well in the table and we fight to win every game.”

Martyrs sparkle after dull start (Dec 13) 11:30

THE Martyrs took all three points against Supermarine with a determined second half display.

A lack-lustre first 45 minutes from both sides was instantly forgotten after the break when the home side up the tempo and the chances began to come.

Garry Shephard put Merthyr ahead four minutes after the restart, Swindon goalkeeper Matthew Bulman unable to hold on to Tariq Khalil's shot and the player manager finding the net unmarked from six yards  out.

Merthyr kept up the pressure and just past the hour  Scott Armitage flashed a shot across the face of goal which Shephard somehow was unable to connect with.

With 20 minutes remaining the Martyrs looked sure to put the game beyond Supermarine as Armitage made a fine run down the left before being up-ended inside the box by defender Kyle Lapham.

Referee Simon Knapp pointed to the spot but Armitage's kick was turned away by Bulman.

A Kris Leek header was only inches over the Swindon cross-bar with 10 minutes remaining , before Khalil saw another  shot saved by Bulman from point blank range after Armitage had once again gone on a mazy run down the left to set up the opportunity.

Without the second goal Merthyr's fans had to endure a nervous last few minutes but  the Martyrs  held on to deservedly claim victory and edge nearer to safety in the Southern League Premier Division.

Robbie gives Haverfordwest hope (Dec 13) 11:25

A BRACE from Robbie Walters boosted Haverfordwest’s hopes of pushing into the top half of the table with victory at basement side Caersws.

The Mid Wales hosts battled hard but succumbed to Walters, who took his league tally for the season to nine goals – the first a crucial breakthrough three minutes before half time.

Chris Melia, who netted the winner in the corresponding game between the sides last year, had a chance to put Caersws back on terms but headed over the bar straight after the break.

But there was no way back once Walters added his second of the afternoon on 69 minutes.

It was another disappointing afternoon for the Mid Wales villagers who have now lost six of their seven outings on home soil. To add to their misery midfielder Geraint Lewis was sent off four minutes from time after a second booking.

For the home side Mark Griffiths saw a deflected strike turned over by keeper Lee Idzi, while at the other end Davie Jones saved at the feet of Nicky Woodrow.

Carmarthen extend Druids losing streak (Dec 13) 11:20

POOR old Elements Cefn Druids have to look back as far back as the summer for their last victory and Lady Luck deserted them again as they flopped to a 1-0 defeat at home to Carmarthen Town.

The South Walians took the lead in the 13th minute – a corner from the right taken by Danny Thomas was glanced past Cefn keeper Rob Thomas from close range. To their credit the hosts responded positively and Lee Jones tested Neil Thomas, who gathered cleanly.

Carmarthen finished the opening half the better side with Craig Hughes and Nathan Cotterall both guilty of wasting good chances.

Cefn did improve as the game went on and they deserved to have levelled but an effort from Andrew Edgar off a long throw from Adam Hett had the keeper back pedalling and he was able to clear the ball to safety. Edgar was again involved in another good attacking move and his effort was eventually cleared for a corner.

One win in 14 outings doesn’t make pretty reading and it is going to take a miracle for ex-Wrexham stalwarts Wayne Phillips and Lee Jones, in charge at Plas Kynaston, these days to turn things around.

Aberaman's new manager see's his new side win (Dec 12) 21:00
Aberaman have appointed a new manager today following the departure of Mattie Davies who has become Deryn Brace's number 2 at Carmarthen Town, but he will oversee today's game against Ely Rangers.
Aberaman have appointed former Wales international, Burnley, QPR and Swansea City star Leighton James. James watched today's game which saw Aberaman beat Ely Rangers 1-0 and maintain their 2nd spot.
Dillwyn Pritchard, Aberaman's Director of Football, said "Mattie goes with our blessing and thank him for his contribution to the club over the past two seasons both as  a player in the championship winning team of last season and as manager this season, he has done the club and himself proud and Carmarthen have got a good guy and a great prospect in the management team.

“We first heard of their interest last Monday and we have had to move quickly to appoint a new manager and we believe in Leighton we have secured a first class coach and a very experienced manager.”

“Leighton comes with great pedigree and a wealth of knowledge and he has the full backing of the club to help maintain the success we have enjoyed both with David Morgan and Mattie.”

Best yet to come from Neath, says confident boss Dyer (Dec 12) 12:55

FORM team Neath Athletic have warned the rest of the Welsh Premier the best is yet to come.

On a run of 11 games undefeated, and the Eagles just five points off the summit with two games in hand, Andrew Dyer’s side do battle with Airbus UK at the Gnoll tomorrow.

Dyer reflected on the fortunate single goal success at Carmarthen by admitting: “We didn’t play well but we dug in and ground out an important win.

“We are still not firing as I know we can and I feel we can still step up a notch or two.”

Neath are still without suspended Sean Cronin while veteran striker Carl Shaw is absent due to ligament damage.

Welsh Premier clubs vote to accept change (Dec 12) 12:50

DESPITE widespread opposition, Welsh Premier football clubs have voted narrowly for a 44-match programme next season when the new 12-team super league is formed.

At a meeting at Newton's Latham Park on Thursday night, nine clubs voted in favour, six against, with one club abstaining.

It means that from next year clubs will play each other four times a season, and with cup competitions some could go head to head six times.

By opting for 12 clubs earlier in the year the Welsh Premier board backed themselves into a corner and, it appears, the only reason the resolution was passed was the lack of a feasible alternative.

Neath were one of the clubs voicing concerns.

But the only alternative — to have a cut-off point after 22 matches and then split teams into two groups of six to fight out title and relegation battles — was hardly mouthwatering.

The main concerns from clubs were financial, with increased costs for travel, pitch wear and tear, larger squads and match official costs the areas highlighted.

In agreeing the new format clubs have been assured the Welsh Premier will seek additional funding from the governing body, who now need to ratify the proposal.

Former Carmarthen Town boss Tomi Morgan, now at the helm of Porthmadog, has voiced the loudest opposition to the plan and believes the new format will never work.

"Travelling costs will push some clubs to the limit, and if they think this will increase crowds they are wrong," he said.

"I have spent time with Bohemian in Ireland and one of their complaints over there is having a 10-club league where they play each other so often. My ideal would have been 16 clubs playing each other home and away, creating a 30-match season."

Relieved Welsh Premier secretary John Deakin admitted: "The clubs have agreed there is no ideal solution regarding the number of fixtures to be played.

"However, the clubs have been given the opportunity to air their views and a majority saw 44 matches as the fairest."

Llanelli, Neath and Port Talbot look odds on to qualify for the new set-up, with Carmarthen likely to join them, although Deryn Brace's side will have to up their game in the new year to succeed.

Barry title vow from Kurt Bettles (Dec 11) 16:00

BARRY Town head into their derby with Dinas Powys tomorrow with captain Kurt Bettles insisting they will be in the Welsh Football League title race for the duration.

Barry lie fourth in Division One and Bettles insists: “We can maintain the challenge. We are right up with the leaders and have a squad who can keep us there.

“In my view, the manager has put together one of the strongest squads in Welsh League football.

“Just about every single player has had offers to go and play elsewhere for money, but we are playing for the manager, Gavin Chesterfield, and sticking with him. He has faith in us and we have complete faith in him.

“Considering the number of injuries we’ve had, it’s been a fantastic effort from the lads. There are four or five players out injured, including myself, but hopefully a few of those will be back in January.”

Martyrs much prefer points than apologies (Dec 11) 15:55

SORRY seems to be the hardest word to take for Merthyr assistant boss Danny Carter.

The Martyrs have endured a tough week in their battle to escape the drop zone in the Zamaretto Premier Division.

A loss to a solitary late goal against promotion-chasing Cambridge City was followed by an injury-time equaliser by Halesowen in midweek.

And with mid-table Swindon Supermarine at Penydarren Park tomorrow (3pm), Carter is fed up with having to settle for words of comfort rather than points as they look to recover from the pre-season points reduction.

“We lost 1-0 to Cambridge and their manager is apologising for taking points off us,” said Carter. “And then in midweek we drew 1-1 against Halesowen and their manager is also saying sorry.

“When you look at the paper and see the table, everyone connected at this club realises that the table tells a different story to what’s going on the field.

“But it’s no good having compliments off other managers – its points that will keep us up and then we can start a fresh next season without a 10-point reduction around our necks.”

Despite the financial problems which have beset the club, Carter feels the current squad can make real progress in the division – if they can ensure their future at this level.

“We know this side is more then capable of being in the top six,” he said.

“With a couple of additions and bigger wage structure that can be achieved next season, but our main priority is to stay in this division.

“Garry Shepherd (manager) and I feel that the hard work and endeavour over the last couple of months the players have put in is not reflected in the table and that is very frustrating, because they have been superb.”

Festive cheer at County is put on ice – Holdsworth (Dec 11) 15:50

DEAN Holdsworth has called on his players to keep their Christmas celebrations in check – to pave the way for a major end-of-season party.

The Newport County boss saw his side open up a 10-point gap at the top of the Blue Square South with the 5-0 midweek thrashing of Thurrock. And ahead of tomorrow’s FA Trophy trip to Zamaretto Premier leaders Farnborough, he has urged his players not to let things slip over the festive period.

“I trust my players not to get too much involved in the Christmas theme of things,” he said.

“They know how hard they have worked to get to this stage and I’m confident that they will not spoil it for a couple weeks of over indulgence.

“We have not won anything yet, but there is no getting away from the fact that we are in a good position.

“I’m sure that the players will not jeopardise that just for a few nights out on the town.

“There will be plenty of time to go out after the season has finished – and let’s hope there is something to celebrate.”

Holdsworth is determined the winning mentality is kept up in cup competitions and will pick a strong starting line-up to keep the momentum going.

“We are running a tight ship of 16 or 17 players and I expect to win the game, whichever starting team I pick,” said the former Wimbledon striker.

“We’ll go as far in the competition as possible.

“My players and I love to win. We certainly don’t want a losing feeling to creep into the dressing room.

“We’ll be out to keep going and face one of the Conference clubs and pit our wits against them.

“We have had Farnborough watched for two games. We will respect them as they are top of their own division.

“They are not going to be any mugs and we expect a difficult game, especially at their place.”

Playmaker Sam Foley had signed a new contract with the Exiles with more of the current squad due to put pen to paper on new deals in the next few months.

Leon Britton has not yet signed a new Swansea deal (Dec 11) 15:40

Swansea City boss Paulo Sousa says that Leon Britton has not signed a new deal that would make him one of the best-paid players in the club's history.

The 27-year-old midfielder's current deal expires at the end of this season.

"Leon was one of the players that, when I arrived in the summer, we tried to get an agreement with," said Swans manager Sousa.

"In the end he was offered the best contract in the history of the club and he did not sign it."

Britton joined Swansea on a free transfer from West Ham in June 2003, having impressed on loan the previous season.

In that time the diminutive midfielder has experienced a relegation battle, promotion, trophy success and play-off heartache in his six years with the south Wales club, topping 300 appearances for the club.

Only last September Britton told BBC Sport Wales that he was keen to stay at the Liberty Stadium.

"The talks [over a new contract] have been going well. The ball's back in the club's court," Britton said at the time.

Cardiff City 'settle' with creditors Langston (Dec 11) 15:40
Cardiff City Football Club have announced a settlement with the Langston Corporation over the £15m debt taken out in 2004.

The club say the agreement removes the threat of any further legal action in the "foreseeable future".

Chairman Peter Ridsdale has also thanked former owner Sam Hammam for helping to reach the agreement.

Cardiff will begin paying the debt in monthly instalments, with the first payment scheduled for January 2010.

Last month Malaysian businessman Datuk Chan Tien Ghee joined the club's board, bringing in hopes of fresh investment now the legal stand-off with Langston appears to have been solved.

"On behalf of Cardiff City Football Club, I would like to thank the Langston Corporation for their co-operation in this matter and Mr Sam Hammam for helping to facilitate this agreement," Ridsdale said.

"Langston are happy because they are seeing some cash for the first time and we're happy because the settlement, agreement, is at a level that we believe is fair and reasonable and we can make.

"Nobody was going to invest in this football club with the threat of legal action hanging over us from Langston, given the magnitude of the debt.

"Therefore potential investors I think will see this club as an even more attractive proposition than it was before."

Premiership dream is on for Cardiff and Swansea (Dec 10) 07:00

WELSH football’s big two have been told to shoot for the Premiership dream in the new year after establishing themselves as genuine promotion contenders.

Cardiff City have soared to third place in the Championship, with arch-rivals Swansea just a point behind in fifth ... giving real hope 2009-10 could be their season.

Former Manchester United and England striker Garry Birtles reckons one of the duo is on the verge of providing a watershed moment in Welsh sport.

“The league is so open in nature that a number of teams are promotion candidates.

“Despite Swansea’s poor start and Cardiff’s difficult November, that is definitely the case for the two Welsh teams.

“You can afford to go through a rough patch these days and it still won’t ruin your chances. You only have to look at Sunderland a couple of years ago, or Burnley last year, to see that.

“Early in the season they were struggling right at the bottom and then the next minute they were in the Premiership.”

Dave Jones’ Bluebirds went third after their stunning 2-0 triumph at West Brom, while Paulo Sousa’s Swans made it just one defeat in 14 matches as they beat Plymouth at the Liberty Stadium.

Sky Sports pundit Birtles continued: “I just think it’s brilliant the two teams are doing so well.

“Cardiff are the ones we expect it from. They have been there or thereabouts in the play-offs for years, but they haven’t been able to nail it down when push comes to shove.

“I think this season they might just challenge for the Premiership, though. They have shown they can beat anyone on their day and, if they find some consistency, they should get to the play-offs.

“But you can’t ignore Swansea either because, without a doubt, they are promotion contenders. They play such great football and are a joy to watch.

“They also have more of a winning mentality this season too. The progress they have made in recent years is phenomenal.”

Great night for Newport County (Dec 10) 06:45

RUNAWAY Blue Square South leaders County are now 10 points clear at the top with a game in hand on second-placed Dover after a thoroughly convincing performance last night.

A crowd of 1,603 turned up and were thrilled as the Exiles gave an excellent display of fast, flowing, entertaining football that had the Essex boys on the back foot all evening.

County had already missed a couple of chances before Jamie Collins planted a free-kick on the head of skipper Gary Warren, whose goal opened the floodgates.

Craig Reid struck from the penalty spot in the 36th minute after Ashton Holgate had been pushed over by Paul Olima and Charlie Henry made it 3-0 on the stroke of half-time following more good work by Collins and Reid.

Any thoughts of a Thurrock fightback were dead in the 58th minute as Scott Rogers set up Reid for his second and the top scorer rounded off a fabulous evening for himself and his team by completing his hat-trick with his 16th goal of the season four minutes from time.

Merthyr denied win at the death (Dec 10) 06:40

MERTHYR were cruelly denied all three points after Halesowen grabbed a 94th-minute equaliser at The Grove in a game that saw the visitors create the better opportunities.

Indeed, after a nervous 10 minutes after the kick-off, Merthyr settled before going on to create a number of good chances with Kris Leek going close on more than one occasion and Paul Keddle striking a 25-yard shot wide of the upright.

Merthyr saw appeals for a penalty waved away on 38 minutes when a goal-bound Garry Shephard shot struck the hand of an Halesowen defender with referee Rob Lovegrove deciding that the handball was not deliberate.

The arrival of substitute Marcus Griffiths on 79 minutes proved to be the catalyst for Merthyr going ahead as the young striker's shot 8 minutes later deflected off defender Henry Eze and over goalkeeper Nick Bussey but it was no more than Merthyr deserved.

However, with four minutes of injury time played and Merthyr looking as though they had got the win, a free-kick for Halesowen caused confusion in the Martyrs defence and Stefan Moore was able to get round goalkeeper Andrew Delve and square for Dave Blenkins to fire into the empty net and rescue the point

Seasiders are ready for Saints (Dec 10) 06:35

ABERYSTWYTH manager Alan Morgan is confident that his side can get something from their match at title-chasing The New Saints, as they continue a tough run of matches this Friday.
The Seasiders bounced back from their defeat at Llanelli to claim a deserved draw against Rhyl, and the former Tranmere player is hopeful his side can get something at Oswestry.
A last-gasp goal by substitute Graham Evans earned Aber a point, although Morgan maintained that it was no more than his side had deserved against the defending champions.
“The lads did really well against Rhyl,” said Morgan. “With five minutes to go we’d have taken a point, but we could have come away with three points over the full 90 minutes.
“After the defeat at Llanelli, I said the lads had not become a bad side overnight, it takes a good side to win five matches on the bounce, and now we’ll look to put another run together.”
Morgan is under no illusions as to the size of his side’s task against second-placed The New Saints, as they bid to prove their top six credentials in the Welsh Premier against the full-timers.
“If we cut out the silly mistakes, and do not gift our opponents goals, we have got every chance,” Morgan said. “It is going to be a tough game on Friday night, in my opinion they’re the best team in the league.
“They’re a solid side all-round, and we’ll need go there and keep our discipline and our shape.”
Gareth Hughes will be available for selection again after missing last weekend’s match, and the competition for places is really hotting up, with Graham Evans and Adam James having both returned from injury.
Meanwhile the Aber boss has announced that goalkeeper Steve Cann has become the latest player to sign a contract to remain at Park Avenue, after Geoff Kellaway also signed forms.
South African-born Cann, who now lives in Neath, joined the club in July 2009 and has made an big impression to date, making 17 appearances and keeping six clean sheets for Aber.
He was also selected for the Welsh Semi Professional Under-23s squad in September, playing half a game in the home defeat to Poland, as well as saving a crucial penalty in their recent 2-2 draw in Northern Ireland.
Manager Alan Morgan said: “Steve, in my eyes, is the best goalkeeper in the Welsh Premier League. He has presence, ability, he kicks really well, and he also has good hands, I wouldn’t swap him with anyone.”
The Aberystwyth manager has also hinted at bringing in one or two new faces in the New Year to further bolster the squad.

Now Neath raise doubts over new welsh premier league format (Dec 09) 17:00

NEATH have joined a growing band of Welsh Premier football clubs who are questioning the way that next season's super league programme could be constructed.

Recently, former Carmarthen Town manager Tomi Morgan, at present in charge of strugglers Porthmadog, called on clubs to recognise the pitfalls of playing 44 league matches per season.

Morgan has been very vociferous in decrying the idea of a super league and teams playing each other four times.

"I have yet to meet another manager or spectator who favours the plans," he said.

With 12 clubs forming the new structure, Morgan pointed out that to play each team twice would produce just 22 games and that would not be viable.

Playing each other three times would not be logical, so four matches appeared to be on the agenda.

The former Welsh international semi-professional boss feels that could signal the end for some clubs as costs would escalate as they have to travel the length and breadth of Wales so many times.

He also feels that clubs would require bigger squads to meet the heavy programme, which would further add to rising costs in difficult economic times.

And Morgan cites heavy wear and tear on grounds and a public indifference to seeing other teams so regularly in a season, which could rise to six clashes per season with cup ties, as other reasons to ditch the idea.

Rhyl, Cefn Druids and Prestatyn Town are among the clubs who have since questioned the possibility of a 44-match campaign, and now Neath have joined the debate.

Secretary Tony Melding said: "The league is primarily part time and played in a wet climate.

"Therefore, 44 games could, ultimately, reduce the quality of the league and we are led to believe that the whole purpose of the reduction in the number of league clubs is to do the exact opposite — to raise the quality of the product.

"Due to many games having to be played midweek, which would involve players having to take more time off work, you could see clubs playing their strongest sides on Saturdays but not necessarily midweek."

Melding continued: "We are not totally convinced that spectators will want to see other teams as much as they will under these proposals and pitches will be severely put under pressure.

"Before it is too late we need to take stock, look around Europe at other formats and decide which format suits our situation."

The first opportunity will be later this week when the Welsh Premier clubs meet to discuss the best way forward.

As Port Talbot chairman Andrew Edwards said: "This is an important meeting and it is vital we get it right."

Dean Holdsworth’s inspiration for Newport County (Dec 09) 09:40

NEWPORT County boss Dean Holdsworth believes the prospect of going 10 points clear at the top of Blue Square South should inspire his side at home to Thurrock tonight (7.45pm).

Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Bath City extended County’s unbeaten run to six and Holdsworth wants more of the same against a Thurrock side looking to cement their place in the play-offs.

“Come the end of the season, I think a point at Bath will be regarded as a decent point,” said Holdsworth.

“There was not a lot wrong with the team’s overall performance so there was not a lot to complain about from me.

“Tonight its very much the same – back to basics, work hard behind the ball and close people down.

“We do that and we won’t be far from getting the right result.

“Thurrock are no mugs and they have players that can really hurt us and do some damage, so we are going to have to be at the races.

“They are not fifth for nothing and are capable of upsetting us.

“My players have a great chance of going 10 points clear of Dover tonight. What a thought that is.

“If they can do that then it should give them all a boost of confidence going into a very important festive period.”

Merthyr boss Garry Shephard in call to his players (Dec 09) 09:40

MERTHYR Tydfil boss Garry Shephard has called on his side to turn effort into points as they continue their fight to pull away from the Zamaretto Premier Division’s drop zone.

The Martyrs face a stiff task at eighth-placed Halesowen Town tonight (7.45pm), but know victory will lift them out of the bottom four for the first time this season.

And Shephard knows they cannot afford many more near misses like Saturday’s hard-fought 1-0 defeat to second-placed Cambridge City.

“We should have got something out of the game on Saturday after all the hard work the players put into the game,” said Shephard.

“But I don’t want to stand here come May thinking about what we should have done.

“The players have been superb with the 50 per cent pay cut and the 10-point deduction at the start of the season, but now is not the time to feel sorry for ourselves.

“We need to turn all the effort and hard work into points.

“We know that teams don’t enjoy playing us because we are battlers who play some decent football at times, but we need points – that will make the difference.

Trundle's winner put's Swans into play off places (Dec 09) 01:10

Lee Trundle came off the bench to score his third goal in two games as Swansea City beat struggling Plymouth at Liberty Stadium.

The visitors made it difficult for the Swans, but Trundle did his chances of staying in south Wales beyond the end of December no harm.

Trundle's fired home Gorka Pintado's cross to score after 52 minutes.

That put Swansea into a play-off slot as Plymouth's Shane Lowry was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Liverpudlian Trundle is on loan from Bristol City until the end of the month and has scored five times for his temporary boss Paulo Sousa, claiming both in the 2-2 draw at Peterborough on Saturday.

Plymouth's misery was compounded when Shane Lowry was sent off for a second bookable offence in stoppage time after a clash with Pintado.

Sousa's side lie fifth after being unbeaten in nine home league games and losing only once in their their last 14 Championship encounters.

Cardiff City ended their 52-year league Hawthorns hoodoo (Dec 09) 01:00

Cardiff City ended their 52-year league Hawthorns hoodoo in controversial fashion.

Chris Burke's second goal in successive games gave Cardiff an 18th minute lead as his left-foot shot flew past Albion stopper Scott Carson.

Cardiff completed victory when Carson was dismissed for a head-butt on Michael Chopra late on.

Referee Paul Taylor awarded Cardiff a penalty and Peter Whittingham scored from the rebound.

Replacement goalkeeper Dean Kiely's first touch was to save Whittingham's weak left-footed penalty diving to his right but the former England under-21 international kept his composure to slide home the rebound to fire Cardiff to third in the Championship.

The defeat was a blow to Albion's promotion hopes and was West Brom's first defeat in seven games since Cardiff's Welsh rivals Swansea won here on 20 October.

Roberto Di Matteo's men - looking to close the gap on leaders Newcastle to one point - were furious official Taylor sent England international Carson off for the second time in his career.

Chopra had clipped Carson when the Cardiff striker attempted to convert Burke's 82nd minute cross but the former Liverpool and Aston Villa stopper planted his head into Chopra's face when the ball had been cleared.

Marek Cech was sacrificed by Baggies boss Di Matteo so Kiely could come on after Carson's moment of madness but to add insult to injury for West Brom, Taylor awarded the spot-kick to the amazement of the home side.

Whittingham, at the second attempt, converted his 12th goal of the season to move him to the top of the Championship's top-scorers list as Cardiff celebrated their first win at the Hawthorns in the league since February 1957.

County looking to open up a 10 point lead (Dec 08) 16:10

TOP scorer Craig Reid is aiming to fire Newport County to an incredible 10-point lead at the top of the Blue Square South tomorrow.

After a hard-fought 1-1 draw at near neighbours Bath City on Saturday, the Exiles host Thurrock at Spytty Park in one of the two games in hand they currently have over second-placed Dover Athletic.

Reid’s penalty at Twerton Park was his 13th goal of the campaign but he hasn’t found the net at Spytty Park since the 1-1 draw against Weymouth way back on September 16, something he’s keen to put right tomorrow.

“I was very happy to put away the penalty and exorcise some demons having missed one at Lewes the week before,” said the striker, who turns 24 next week.

“I’ve got quite a few goals on the road lately but not at home and I can’t wait to score at home again – hopefully I’ll get a couple against Thurrock.

“I love scoring goals and everyone can see how much it means to me,” he added. “And scoring at home gives me the chance to celebrate with our fans which always makes it extra special for me.”

Exiles boss Dean Holdsworth may be trying his best to keep his players’ feet on the ground but Bath manager Adie Britton believes County are certain to be crowned champions this season.

“They are now getting so far away it is hard to see who will beat them,” said Britton after Saturday’s match. “At this rate they will be presented with the Championship in January!”

Despite those comments, Reid is staying on message and predicting a tough game against Thurrock who were also held to a draw on Saturday in a goalless home clash with Havant & Waterlooville.

“A win would give us an even bigger cushion but it’s always a battle against Thurrock,” he said.

“They will probably come here and sit back looking for a draw and we will have to be prepared to fight for the points. We are certainly capable of beating them but it will be a real rough and tumble encounter.”

Parkins making an instant impact at Barry Town (Dec 08) 10:20

MICHAEL Parkins made a dramatic return to playing action for Barry Town – scoring with his first touch in eight months!

James Simpson led Barry to victory with a hat-trick, but it was Parkins’ cracker 10 minutes from time in their 4-2 Nathaniel Car Sales League Cup win against Bryntirion Athletic which stole the show.

Club captain Parkins went on after 80 minutes and his first job was to fire in a free-kick from 25 yards out.

Both Parkins and hat-trick ace Simpson are former Cardiff City trainees.

Simpson played for Newport County and Forest Green Rovers after leaving the Bluebirds, while he is now playing a key role in Barry Town’s bid to challenge at the top of the MacWhirter Welsh Football League.

Dyer backs Eagles to fly high (Dec 07) 11:20

NEATH manager Andrew Dyer believes his side have not displayed anything like their full potential yet.

Despite a crucial 1-0 win at Carmarthen on Friday night, the Eagles boss felt his players were not at their best.

"I was worried how it might go because we had only played one match in a month," Dyer said.

"We didn't play particularly well and were probably a bit fortunate to win. But we defended well and rode our luck at times.

"It was a huge result for us and the early goal gave us a platform and we dug in and ground out an important result.

"We're still not firing as I know we can. We can still step up a notch or two and I think the more matches we play the better we'll get.

"The busy Christmas programme should suit us. I feel it will bring about the best in us."

Jonah delighted with Steelmen's display (Dec 07) 11:10

A BRILLIANT display of all-out attacking football earned Port Talbot an emphatic 5-0 victory over lowly Porthmadog at the GenQuip Stadium.

The Steelmen are now within one point of third-placed Rhyl and have a game in hand so the push up the table is gaining momentum.

This was Port Talbot's fifth successive victory and with matches against Bala Town and Cefn Druids to follow before the two massive Christmas clashes with Neath, Mark Jones's side are a big threat to the top teams.

Jones saluted his players. "That was a superb, dominant performance and we are really starting to get there," he said.

"I thought we were excellent and there were big performances from Scott Barrow, Matthew Rees, Gary Bansor and Neil Thomas.

"But all 14 were at the top of their game. Remember, Porthmadog won 3-1 at Carmarthen two weeks ago so that puts this result into perspective."

But Jones remained quiet on his side's title ambitions and European hopes.

"I don't want to go there with so much of the season remaining," he added.

Trundle "I hope I've proved my worth" (Dec 07) 11:00
LEE Trundle feels he proved he has "something to offer" Swansea City with his two-goal cameo at Peterborough — but he still has no idea where his future lies.

The Scouse star looked to have turned defeat into victory when he struck twice late on at London Road after coming on for the final 20 minutes.

And while celebrations were soured when The Posh snatched a 95th-minute leveller, Trundle hopes his contribution will help win him a long-term Liberty deal.

The 33-year-old, now Swansea's top-scorer with four goals in just one start and six substitute appearances, sees his loan from Bristol City expire at the end of the month.

"I have said all along that Swansea is where I want to play my football and all I can do is try to show what I can do when I get a chance," Trundle said.

"It has been a little frustrating not being involved all the time because everybody knows how much I want to stay here.

"The more you are sitting on the bench or you're not even in the squad, the harder it is to impress because you can't show anything.

"Saying that, we have been on a great run, so you can't really complain, and I understand the way we play.

"We keep the ball in midfield and, if that means coming off the bench and doing the type of thing I did on Saturday, well it's a squad game, isn't it?

"Obviously in an ideal world I would like to play with two strikers — that's how I've played all my career and one up front is new to me.

"But we went with two up front against Peterborough when I came on and thankfully I managed to score a couple of goals, so I think that's shown I've still got something to offer if needed."

Paulo Sousa says he will not decide on Trundle's future until his loan comes to an end, and the striker revealed he has not spoken to his manager about what is around the corner. Asked if he thought Sousa liked him as a player, Trundle said: "He brought me in. I've only made one start, but I have popped up with four goals now so I can't have done myself any harm.

"Whenever the chance comes I'm champing at the bit to do well — I will do everything in my power to stay at Swansea.

"I haven't heard anything from the manager, but obviously I will have to know something this month."

Nottingham Forest set to join race to sign Gareth Bale (Dec 07) 01:40

FORMER double European Cup winners Nottingham Forest are ready to join the January race for Wales star Gareth Bale.

The Championship club are preparing a £3m bid for the left-back.

Birmingham and AC Milan are also said to be amongst the clubs who have been monitoring the lack of football Bale has been given by Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp.

Bale, 20, was picked for the Carling Cup tie with Manchester United in midweek and looked to be Tottenham’s best player.

But he has had to play second fiddle to Benoit Assou-Ekotto this campaign.

Prior to this weekend, Bale had made just two appearances for Tottenham in the Premier League this season, playing a total of 41 minutes.

Ledley and Chopra may miss Cardiff's trip to Brom (Dec 07) 01:30

Cardiff City could be without Joe Ledley and Michael Chopra for Tuesday's trip to West Brom, a game for which striker Jay Bothroyd is suspended. Ledley (groin) came off in Saturday's 1-0 win over Preston and Chopra had a stomach upset ahead of that win.

Bothroyd is out after being booked for the fifth time this season.

But Cardiff boss Dave Jones dismissed fears over Ledley's hip condition, saying similarly affected players have played on.

He cited ex-Bluebirds Roger Johnson and Warren Feeney as players to have suffered the sort of hip problem Ledley, 22, has complained of.

Jones said: "I said the other day that Roger played all last year, Feens played three-and-a-half years with it.

"Joe, if you put him on a scale of one to three and three being the worst, Joe's a stage one.

"And Joe wouldn't play or any other player at this football club if they had an injury.

"If there's anything wrong with any player, no matter how small, if they can't play and they can't do their job then they come under the auspices of the medical team."

Jones says Ledley was asked on Friday if he was fit to face Preston and the player said "yes".

But following a week in which Ledley was publicly criticised by club chairman Peter Ridsdale over his form amid on-going contract negotiations, the player must now deal with a fresh injury.

Welsh league & cup round up. (Dec 06) 15:30

NEWPORT YMCA had a fine 3-1 success over Cwmbran Town yesterday to move closer to the chasing pack in division two.

The goalscorers for the YMCA were Boris Emane-Bidza, Luke Young and Faris Yafai, while James Cooper scored for Town.

In another Gwent derby, Llanwern pipped Tredegar Town, who had Ryan Carniff sent off, 1-0.

The only goal came early on from Mike Aviss.

There was a five goal thriller in the west as Newcastle Emlyn edged out the Students of Uwic 3-2.

A brace of goals from Antony Owens and another from Sean Pemberton completed the home side’s, tally while Donald Rughneen was twice on target for the Students.

Maesteg Park had a disappointing afternoon when they went down 5-2 at home to Treharris Athletic Western. Despite two goals from Justin Pengelly, Maesteg leaked goals at the other end as Jamie Rees (2), Ryan Arthur, Kevin Bounds and Craig Ready all netted for the visitors.

In division three, Pontypridd Town defeated Seven Sisters 2-1 thanks to goals from Lewis Waite and Richard Jago. David Brown was on target for Sisters.

A brace of goals from Seb Haggett was enough to give Cwmaman Institute a 2-0 verdict over Goytre while there were also wins for Aberbargoed Buds, Pentwyn Dynamos and Risca United.

Ammanford Town will play at home to division one leaders Goytre United in the third round of the Nathaniel Car Sales League Cup after beating Pontardawe Town.

Ammanford emerged 2-1 winners with Matthew Fisher and Richard Lewis putting them through after Robbie Daniels had equalised for the hosts.

In yesterday’s third round ties, AFC Porth had a 5-1 victory over Porthcawl Town with a brace from Craig Wells leading the way.

Also on target for Porth were Adam Wright and Ashley Burge, while an own goal completed their tally.

AFC Llwydcoed enjoyed a 4-3 triumph over Cardiff Corries in a thrilling tie. Richard Veale (2) and an own goal kept Corries in the hunt but they were pipped as Lee Phillips and Richard Dennis, both scored a brace to see the visitors through.

Bridgend Town shook off some inconsistent League form with a 3-0 success over West End at the Brewery Field. The hero was two goal Vinnie Wattleworth while Raith Plant was also on target for the winners.

Steelmen crush their North Walian rivals (Dec 06) 15:30

WITH three of the Welsh Premier’s top clubs all facing potential cliff-hangers on their travels, Port Talbot can enhance their European credentials when they meet lowly Porthmadog at the GenQuip Stadium today.

The game marks manager Mark Jones’ one year in charge of the Steelmen and what a transformation there has been since his arrival.

“It’s amazing to think that one year has passed, but I feel we have made good progress with only around six defeats,” Jones said. “The lads are raring to go after our postponement at Newtown last week, but Porthmadog will pose a big threat as they are desperate for some points at the moment.”

Swans settle for a point (Dec 06) 15:30

Aaron Mclean's injury-time strike saved Peterborough after Swansea substitute Lee Trundle netted two late goals.

The visitors dominated the first half but went behind when Chris Whelpdale profited from defensive confusion after Exodus Geohaghon's long throw.

Trundle was introduced on 70 minutes and made an impact with with a low shot past Joe Lewis before shrugging off his marker for an injury-time second.

But in the fourth minute of injury time Mclean scrambled in from close range.

Captain George Boyd provided the assistance, skipping away down the left and driving in a low cross which was missed by two defenders to allow Mclean to steer home at the far post.

Despite the late relief, Peterborough remain rooted to the bottom of the Championship with new manager Mark Cooper still seeking his first win.

Llanelli move clear after victory (Dec 06) 15:30

IT PROVED a good day for Llanelli who went two points clear at the top.

With title rivals The New Saints and Rhyl both dropping points, Andy Legg’s men capitalised by recording their first victory in four years at Maesydre.

They dominated the first half in going 2-0 up, but struggled to shake off their hosts who scored in the second half through Adam Jenkins.

Antonio Corbisiero gave the leaders the perfect start when crashing a superb 25-yarder into the top corner after just two minutes.

The league’s top scorer Rhys Griffiths then got in on the act by netting his 13th league goal on 33 minutes, with the predatory striker pouncing after home keeper Jack Cudworth had saved a strike from Andrew Mumford.

Llanelli could have made the game safe, but after Legg went off early in the second half, they were pegged back when Welshpool 16-year-old Jenkins bundled in a reply on the hour.

The leaders, however, were not to be denied their fourth on their travels that keeps them riding high.

It was also a good day for Llanelli defender Lee Phillips who notched up his 200th league game.

Reid on spot to secure top slot for Newport (Dec 06) 15:30

NEWPORT County could not be deflected from maintaining their grip at the top of the Blue Square South league, despite meeting a Bath City side who have been at the top of their game in recent weeks.

At a very wet and windswept Twerton Park, County took an army of followers to record Bath’s biggest league gate of the season at 1,404.

The home side were keen to build on their 5-0 success against third-placed Woking in midweek.

And the hosts were first to threaten when Kaid Mohamed found space behind the County defence.

But striker Mohamed screwed his shot out of play for a throw-in.

A Sam Foley free-kick on nine minutes warmed Bath goalkeeper Ryan Robinson’s hands, who was relieved to touch the ball over the bar for a County corner.

A corner at the other end, however, provided the game’s first goal, when Bath’s Sido Jombati found space at the near post to flick a header into the net from a fine Lewis Hogg delivery.

County came back strongly though, and in the 21st minute were awarded a penalty for a trip by Bath skipper Chris Holland on Foley.

Craig Reid stepped up to put the spot-kick beyond Robinson.

And the visitors started to produce some flowing football and had the hosts at full stretch as both Reid and Foley linked up with Charlie Henry and Ashan Holgate to create a series of solid half chances.

Holgate could have sent them in in front at the break, but was foiled by Robinson right on the stroke of half-time. And the second period was a much more attritional contest, with few chances at either end of the pitch.

Defeat is a mystery for Merthyr (Dec 06) 15:30

MERTHYR were left scratching their heads as to how they had lost this one, with the truth being that a 30-yard deflection proved to be their undoing.

With Cambridge having only lost just the once this season in the league, The Martyrs knew they had a tough task on the cards but matched their visitors before the break.

Scott Armitage fired just over for Merthyr after seven minutes before Cambridge hit back with both Steve Gentle and Adrian Cambridge having shots deflected over.

If the first half had been end to end, the second was anything but, with Merthyr camped inside the visitors’ half for much of the time.

Steve Williams  delivered an excellent cross to the far post on 50 minutes which was deflected, but Armitage could only direct the ball over.

Ryan Dorrian looked to have given The Martyrs the lead on 65 minutes, only for his far post effort to be somehow scrambled away by Barrett, and just five minutes later Merthyr got literally mugged.

With City’s Cambridge 30 yards out he once more tried his luck from range with a shot which appeared to be going harmlessly wide before a deflection off Merthyr’s Paul Keddle saw it nestle in the opposite corner of the Merthyr net, leaving Delve stranded.

Merthyr rallied in search of the elusive equaliser and Barrett used his fists to punch away a number of dangerous crosses in the swirling conditions but with five minutes remaining, player manager Garry Shephard struck a 20-yard shot on the turn which was just too high.

Newport bolstered by two new boys (Dec 05) 13:30

Newport County boss Dean Holdsworth will have two new faces in his squad today at Twerton Park as the table-topping Exiles face Bath City with a mounting injury crisis.

The Exiles yesterday sealed deals for two players, one on a permanent basis and one temporarily until January 1 and both have received their international clearance for today’s game.

The permanent signing is winger James Coutts, formerly of Bournemouth, Grays Athletic and Weymouth. He has recently been living in and playing in the USA, but Holdsworth secured his signing after he trained with the Exiles on Thursday, having been offered deals with two other clubs.

The 22-year old joins initially on a non-contract basis, but is hopeful of securing a permanent contract.

Holdsworth has also completed a short-term swoop for American Anthony Peters, a 6ft 4in central defender who has featured in the MLS for both Chicago Fire and Cleveland City Stars.

The 26-year old has agreed a pre-contract agreement with Conference outfit Mansfield Town, but can’t play for them until January 1, allowing Holdsworth to agree a short-term switch with his twin brother David, manager of the Stags.

There is no prospect of Peters, described as a “pure athlete,” staying beyond the start of January, but the Argus can exclusively reveal that a new defender will join County permanently once the transfer window re-opens.

“Anthony is another one; it was an ideal situation to bring him here.

“He’s a pure athletic, big, quick and strong and we’ve got him for a month until he goes to Mansfield.”

Holdsworth added: “He is getting rave reviews from my brother and I’ve spoken to Rob Duffy about him as well.

A deal is all but done for a new man to replace Alton Thelwell, who has now signed for Kettering.

“It’s a busy time of the season and we need options and strength in numbers.”

Scorer ban blow for Steelmen (Dec 04) 16:40

PORT Talbot Town will be without leading league scorer Liam McCreesh for Saturday's visit by Porthmadog as the midfielder serves a one-match ban.

The 24-year-old has scored seven league goals already this season including a double strike in the 2-0 win over The New Saints and will return for the Bala match.

Lee Surman may also miss the match as he was forced to withdraw from the Wales semi-professional side with an ankle problem.

Manager Mark Jones will be looking to mark the first anniversary of his return to the club in style against third from bottom Porthmadog as the Steelmen aim to continue a six-game winning run.

"Porthmadog are currently in the wrong half of the table but we will be taking nothing for granted," said Jones.

"They have picked up two fantastic victories over the last three weeks and bring with them an experienced squad of players.

"Tomi Morgan is one of the senior statesmen in the Welsh Premier and I have yet to come up against one of his teams without it being a difficult test."

Boss Ford makes short drive for Barry return (Dec 04) 16:30

BARRY Town and Bryntirion Athletic fight it out tonight to be the first team through to the Nathaniel Car Sales League Cup quarter-finals.

Barry-based Bryntirion boss Fran Ford makes the short journey to Jenner Park for what is likely to be a closely-fought match.

Barry are unbeaten in their last nine MacWhirter Welsh League and cup matches, having drawn 2-2 against defending champions Aberaman Athletic last weekend.

There are five third round matches tomorrow, all kicking off at 1.30pm.

They are Afan Lido v Abertillery Bluebirds, AFC Porth v Porthcawl Town, Bridgend Town v West End, Cardiff Corinthians v AFC Llwydcoed and Llangeinor v Croesyceiliog.

Two second round ties are still to be completed. Pontardawe Town v Ammanford has now been postponed twice because of bad weather and they clash tomorrow.

Cambrian and Clydach-Briton Ferry Llansawel has been postponed three times and was abandoned during the second half in midweek.

Tomorrow, Cambrian entertain Bettws in the league, while their cup-tie against Ferry is on Tuesday.

South Gower are waiting for Cambrian or Briton Ferry, while Pontardawe or Ammanford will be at home to Goytre United.

Dinas Powys, who were due to face Pontardawe in the league, have a re-arranged game at Aberaman Athletic.

Ricki Morgan (2) and Joe Hinds scored for Dinas as they fought back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 at West End.

Manager Danny Kinsey gave Mathew Jones his debut on the right side of midfield, while Ashton Turner returned to the side after relocating to Wiltshire. Josh Refell made his first start on the left of midfield.

The Dinas centre-half pairing of Lloyd Davies and new boy Anthony Roberts were outstanding, winning every ball pumped forward towards them.

Other First Division League matches tomorrow see Ely Rangers host Caerleon, while Taffs Well take on Garden Village at home.

Exiles boss Holdsworth dismisses Bath talk as Hogg-wash (Dec 04) 16:20

NEWPORT County boss Dean Holdsworth has stressed that the Exiles will do their talking on the pitch.

Tomorrow’s cross-border clash at Bath City (3pm) has gone up several notches with some fighting talk coming out of the West Country.

Former Bristol Rovers midfielder Lewis Hogg claimed table-topping County “are not any better” than 14th-placed Bath – despite a 19-point gap between the sides in the Blue Square South.

“Newport are on the crest of a wave, they are winning every week, but they are not any better than us,” said Hogg.

“They’re probably 15 points better off, but we are as good as them.

“It’s up to us to go and show it. I don’t think there is anyone better than us in our league when we are on the top of our game.”

Added Hogg: “The play-offs are definitely within reach.

“We have shown what we can do in the cup, we have just got to go out and do it every Saturday and Tuesday for the next six months.”

But Holdsworth admitted he had to smile when he saw Hogg’s remarks with County eight points clear, and with a game in hand of second-placed Dover Athletic at the halfway point of the season approaches.

“He might just have done my team talk for me there,” said Holdsworth.

“I’ll leave it down to the my players to answer that kind of comment on the pitch where it all matters.

“He’s entitled to his opinion, but certainly I will make sure my players hear what he has to say about the game.

“What I will say is that my players are on the top of their game every week.

“That is why we are where we are because we’re on top of our game more times than they are.

“There is no getting away from it, this is a big game for me, the players and the supporters.

“We want to make sure everything is in place to give us a decent chance of returning to South Wales with a decent result.”

Shephard’s Martyrs flock aiming to fleece top three visitors (Dec 04) 16:10

MERTHYR Tydfil are confident they can add another big scalp to their collection when third-placed Cambridge City visit Penydarren Park tomorrow (3pm).

The Martyrs are second from bottom – nine points ahead of Rugby Town – but player-manager Garry Shephard points out the Zamaretto League table does not paint a true picture of their season to date.

“When you look at the table it give the impression that we are struggling,” explained Shephard.

“You add the minus 10 points we were handed because of the club going into administration in the summer and we would be in a play-off position.

“I think sometimes clubs approach us looking at the table and we are going to be a pushover.

“Once you start a game in that frame of mind it’s very difficult to snap out of it mentally.”

Shephard has praised the special spirit of his battling Merthyr players.

“I’m sure we have caught teams on the back foot, because this team loves to go toe-to-toe with the big hitters in the league,” he said.

“It seems to drive them on even more and that is why we have done well against the top teams in the league this season.

“Cambridge lost to Evesham this season and they certainly would not relish coming to a wet and cold Merthyr.

“Our boys are fired up to turn them, and I want us to unsettle them right from the first whistle. It’s a method that has worked so far this season.”

Shephard has a fully-fit squad to choose from, apart from striker Cortez Belle, with the Martyrs seeking to extend a good home record which has seen them lose only twice at Penydarren Park all season.

Injured Reds play on (Dec 04) 16:00

ANDY Legg is again set to ask his walking wounded to play through the pain barrier at Welshpool tomorrow.

The Reds overcame Aberystwyth a week ago despite the fact Antonio Corbisiero (foot), Craig Moses (groin), Stuart Jones (groin and knee), Rhys Griffiths (flu) and Andrew Mumford (flu) were all below 100 per cent.

And the Llanelli player- manager is calling for more of the same as his side look to hang onto Welsh Premier League top spot.

"I have to credit the players for their attitude — it has been top-class recently," he said.

"We've got a number of lads playing despite carrying knocks, but it just sums up how much these guys want to play for Llanelli."

Reds will be without Lee Jarman for the trip to Mid Wales after he pulled his groin muscle in the win over Aberystwyth, while Legg is hopeful Moses and Corbisiero will feature despite their injuries.

Owain Warlow is expected to be out for a further six weeks, while youngster Ross Jones is a long-term casualty.

But Legg, who saw Rory Smitham leave the club recently, has re-signed midfielder Stephen Evans until the end of the season.

Legg takes Llanelli to a Welshpool side fifth from bottom in the table after only three wins from 14 games so far this season, but buoyed by victory over Elements Cefn Druids in their last outing.

Challengers not so crafty claims Brace (Dec 04) 16:00

DERYN Brace believes Carmarthen Town will face a Neath side that are more graft than guile at Richmond Park tonight.

The mid-table Old Gold take on a Neath outfit with title aspirations after they became fully professional over the summer.

Neath are currently fourth in the Welsh Premier League with games in hand on the teams above them.

And Brace reckons their success has been built on sound organisation.

"They are a no-thrills side but very effective. They get the basics done and very, very well," he said.

"We'll start as underdogs as they've obviously done far better than us in the league so far.

"But we'll come out as organised and as prepared as possible and hopefully put on a better performance than we did in the second half of our last home game."

The Old Gold overcame Bala last weekend, while Neath's match with Prestatyn was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch.

For the Old Gold it was a much-improved performance from the 3-1 home defeat to Porthmadog Town suffered in their previous outing.

"No game is easy," said Brace.

"Neath are a top side and everyone knows the transition they've made over the summer in going full time."

Andrew Dyer's side will look to close the gap on the division's pace-setters Llanelli, who are currently five points ahead having played twice more.

"I've watched Neath on a couple of occasions. We've played them twice in the League Cup so we know a little bit about them," said Brace.

Happy birthday to saviours of County (Dec 03) 13:20

TODAY marks an extremely special anniversary for Newport County, one that it would be easy to overlook or forget about in light of the Exiles’ fantastic form on the field.

The Newport County Supporters Trust, an organisation set-up in a time of crisis, is now flourishing 12 months down the line (to the day, Happy Birthday) having played a huge role in re-establishing Newport County AFC as a club heading towards the Football League, rather than oblivion.

It’s easy to forget what an almighty mess County found themselves in just 12 months ago. They were going down the road that has seen many clubs fall down the football pyramid at best, and at worst, have the unthinkable happen to them, where match days become a memory and the floodlights are turned off for the very last time.

A talented squad had been replaced; a good manager sacked and off the field key personnel were losing heart at the direction the club was taking. Unfortunately, a small group of directors were making every single decision, pouring their own money into the club and seeing very little evidence of progress in return.

Supporters were disheartened by poor performances on the field, a succession of negative headlines off it (Ian Hillier’s sacking, FAW hearing and re-hiring possibly the low point) and turned their backs on a club that was struggling to attract 800 supporters for a home game. They felt disconnected.

Something needed to be done to arrest the slump and I truly believe it is no exaggeration to say that the revival of the Supporters Trust has been the catalyst for all the positive improvements we’ve seen in the past 12 months.

The initial roll of the Supporters Trust was a rescue mission, with around 40 members boosting the club coffers at a key time, enabling the likes of Wayne Turk, Aaron Cook and Sam Foley to arrive, moves that ensured County’s Blue Square South survival.

In the words of Supporters Trust chairman Nigel Dutson, the group were initially helping to “put out fires,” because the board “needed help.”

However, this was to be no temporary boost, the Exiles are now working with the Supporters Trust on a daily basis as the group has continued to grow at an astonishing rate.

A year on from the re-launch, there are now over 400 fully paid up members of the Trust, each contributing at least £10, allowing the group to account for £25,000 this year alone towards paying player wages.

The group now works in tandem with other Newport County supporters groups and finally has a voice in how the club is run.

The Trust is represented at board meetings, has recruited supporters to be trained as match day stewards, organises fund-raising days for the club and has helped to develop the commercial arm of the club.

There are numerous volunteers who work at the club now representing the Trust, many are recognisable faces and, or, voices at Spytty Park and they all deserve thanks and credit for those efforts.

The success of the Trust has been pivotal in inspiring Acorn supremo Matt Southall to re-organise County off the field, the passion of the Trust and its desire to see the club thriving leading to Southall appointing Tim Harris.

Now acting as a link between the board, the Trust, Dean Holdsworth and the players, Harris was finally convinced to return to Newport (at the third time of asking) having finally seen the evidence needed that off the field, County were heading in the right direction.

Fears for Penydarren Park football future (Dec 03) 13:10

FEARS have been raised that football could be lost from Penydarren Park after the deadline for bids to buy the club passed on Monday.

At least two offers – one by the Martyrs to the Cause Supporters’ Trust and another on behalf of Cardiff businessman Annis Abraham – are known to have been made to administrator Mark Bowen.

However, according to Abraham the administrator has hinted a third bid has been made – one which doesn’t have plans for football at the famous ground.

Mr Bowen was unavailable for comment at the time of going to press while Abraham thinks a decision on whose bid is accepted could be announced in January.

As well as raising concerns over a possible third offer, Abraham revealed that should he be successful, the club, as a company, will be renamed as Merthyr Tydfil Football Club 2010.

“We’ve put a bid in and we can’t do more than that now, it’s in the hands of the administrator,” said the millionaire. “I’m confident but also slightly worried as the administrator has hinted a bid has come in from some non-football people.

“We’ve got the backing of everyone at the club so it’s just a case of wait and see now but I’m 110% behind keeping football in Merthyr, no doubt about that.”

Abraham is joined in his bid by business partner Dave Bennett and has also confirmed plans for Striker’s Club are well underway with proposals to rent it out with the proviso that a percentage of the profits go into the club. He has also spoken of his ambitions to attract more youngsters to the Martyrs and has vowed to visit every school in Merthyr to bring in new supporters.

“All I can do now is wait until the end of the season. Even if the club gets relegated I’m hopeful money from myself and sponsors will see it out of trouble,” he added.

Abraham has committed to sponsoring three games in the new year while he added that he would have to concentrate fully on Merthyr should he take over which would mean cutting down the time spent watching his beloved Cardiff City.

The fans’ trust is overseeing the day-to-day running of the club until the end of the season while the administrator looks for the best deal possible for the creditors which include previous owner Wyn Holloway

Another big test for Aber (Dec 03) 13:00

ABERYSTWYTH Town manager Alan Morgan is looking for a positive response from his players after they crashed to their first Welsh Premier League defeat in seven matches at Llanelli.
The Seasiders will be looking to bounce back from their four-goal defeat against the league leaders last Friday night when they take on third-placed Rhyl at Park Avenue this Saturday.
However, Morgan’s troops can expect another tough test against the visiting Lilywhites, who will be determined to make up ground after their home defeat to Haverfordwest County.
Aberystwyth still remain well-placed to secure their place in the new ‘Super 12’ next season, although consistency will be prove crucial in their efforts to achieve a top six final position.
Despite having only lost one league match away from home this season, the Aberystwyth boss admitted that he was now looking for an upturn in his side’s fortunes at Park Avenue.
“We know that we need to improve our home form, these are the games that we need to be winning, and it is important for the home supporters,” he said.
“The team has been on a tremendous run, and you don’t become a bad side overnight, but the lads have got to roll their sleeves up and bounce back.
“We are on a tough run of matches against the top teams, but every other side has had this at some point in the season, and we have got to get on with it.

Skipper Monk faces another fortnight out (Dec 03) 12:40

SWANSEA City have been hit by the news that Garry Monk is likely to be sidelined for at least another fortnight because of an ongoing calf problem.

The Swansea captain has managed just one appearance since suffering the injury in the win over Queens Park Rangers on October 3.

Monk returned four weeks after that to help his team to a clean sheet at Scunthorpe, but broke down in the warm-up before the South Wales derby the following weekend and has not featured since.

Now the 30-year-old seems certain to miss the trip to Peterborough this Saturday as well as home fixtures against Plymouth Argyle and Nottingham Forest next week.

After being told he must rest the injury, Monk's earliest possible return date looks like being December 19, when Swansea go to Sheffield Wednesday.

"Garry has been feeling okay but then suffering recurrences of the injury, as happened before the Cardiff game," a Swansea spokesman said.

"A tear has been found in the calf and he must rest for around two more weeks."

Monk's latest setback is particularly disappointing since Alan Tate, who has been filling in for him at centre-back, must sit out the Peterborough game after collecting his fifth booking of the season at Newcastle last weekend. With those two missing, Albert Serran is in line for his first appearance of the season at London Road.

Monk is not Swansea's only injury concern ahead of Peterborough — Mark Gower is doubtful because of a hamstring problem and striker Stephen Dobbie (ankle) is struggling to be fit.

Boss Alan Davis turns things around at Pontypridd (Dec 03) 12:10

FORMER Burton Albion and Manchester City player Alan Davies is leading Pontypridd Town on a promotion challenge in the MacWhirter Welsh Football League.

Pontypridd have turned their season around and are now in second place in the Third Division, one point behind Corus Steel.

After the first seven league matches Ponty had lost four. That was unexpected as they had completely changed their side from the squad that saw them relegated from Division Two the previous season.

Now, after a further six games, Ponty have won six and drawn one which has lifted them to second place.

The change of the club’s fortunes coincided with the arrival of businessman Phil Gibb, who took up the position of chairman determined to restore the club back into the First Division where they were three seasons ago.

Gibb appointed experienced player-manager Alan Davies, who had played more than 400 games for Burton Albion under Nigel Clough and was with Manchester City and Southampton as a young player.

He earned England international honours at junior level.

Davies quickly brought in former Ponty, ENTO Aberaman and Ton Pentre player Dean Morris to assist him plus Neil Morgan and Marty Ellacott.

Welsh League First Division players Mike Jones, Neil Davies, Ryan Jenkins, Paul Dawes and Nathan Hosgood were signed and Anthony Waters made the switch from Bridgend Town, who, with young Ian Traylor and Richard Jago, form a free-scoring forward line.

Ponty also appointed experienced Adrian Dumphy as secretary, Adele Mansell commercial manager and matchday organiser along with Neil Mansell.

Carmarthen Town prepare for Eagles test (Dec 02) 06:10

DERYN Brace is preparing his side for an acid test when they face Neath on Friday (7.30). The Eagles have emerged as Welsh Premier League title contenders this season after turning full-time over the summer. They are currently fourth in the table — five points behind leaders Llanelli with a game in hand.
Town have already met Andrew Dyer's side twice in the League Cup this season, drawing 0-0 at The Gnoll and losing 3-2 at Richmond Park.
And Brace is expecting another stern challenge when the sides clash for a third time.
"No game is easy. Neath are a top side and everyone knows the transition they've made over the summer in going full-time," he said.
"They've done it quietly and efficiently and credit to Andy Dyer, Simon Dyer and Ray Pennock, who have gone about their jobs fantastically well."
"I've watched Neath on a couple of occasions we've played them a couple of times in the League Cup so we know a little bit about them," said Brace.
"They're a no-thrills side but very, very effective. They get the basics done and very, very well.
"We'll start as underdogs as they've obviously done far better than us in the league so far.

Barry Town aim for cup glory (Dec 01) 05:10

Barry Town are home again this Friday night at Jenner Park to Bryntirion Athletic 7.45pm – a win would secure a place for Barry in the quarter final of the Nathaniel Car Sales League Cup.

Despite the atrocious weather, Barry Town had the best attendance of the season last Saturday. Although the big crowd was disappointed to see the Dragons let slip a 2-0 lead with defender Dan Marshall being sent off and then conceding a penalty, the Town are hoping for another bumper crowd to cheer the team to their best Cup run in over six years.

The Club are again offering free entry to children accompanied by an adult and £2 admission to those under 21. Barry Town are now eight matches unbeaten in all competitions, despite being without three key players due to injury – Marshall becoming a fourth absentee.

Bryntirion, from Bridgend, are managed by former Barry Town assistant manager, Francis Ford, who used to play for Cardiff City. The two teams drew 1-1 in an exciting League match a few weeks ago at Bryntirion where the result could so easily have been 5-5, such were the chances that went begging.

Cardiff City boss Dave Jones gets January transfer go-ahead (Dec 01) 05:10

DAVE Jones has been given the go-ahead to strengthen his Cardiff City squad in January – and boy does he need the new players.

Jones has been left frustrated by City’s refusal to let him bring in new players.

He’s asked chairman Peter Ridsdale every week and been given the same answer: “You were given a budget and you are over that.”

Loan moves for Tony Capaldi (to Leeds United) and Warren Feeney (to Sheffield Wednesday) has eased the pressure a little – and new investment from new director Dato Chan Tien Ghee means he can add to the squad.

His priorities are surely a target-man striker to challenge Jay Bothroyd – and a creative midfield player to add a cutting edge.

That was made abundantly clear again as City slumped to an appalling defeat against Ipswich Town at home.

Cardiff could do with three or four new players in total, but those two are crucial.

And Jones has identified the players he wants in quickly. That could well be a move into the Premier League loan market.

Ridsdale rejects Hammam's request to rejoin Cardiff (Dec 01) 05:10

Cardiff City chairman Peter Ridsdale shunned a request by former owner Sam Hammam to rejoin the board - but insists the club should strike a deal with main debtor Langston by the end of this week.

Ridsdale told a meeting of Bluebirds supporters at Cardiff’s Municipal Club that he and former owner Sam Hammam, who represents the organisation, had agreed a deal which would be officially signed by the end of this week.

Under the proposals, the club will pay Langston £10m by the end of next year.

They hope to start making the payments in January while Langston will also receive £5m in naming rights for the new stadium - but Ridsdale told supporters he had turned down a request by Hammam to rejoin the Cardiff City board.

If the club don’t pay off the debt by the end of next year, £1m will be added to the amount per annum until 2016.

It is hoped the deal will head off any further action Langston could take when a High Court injunction expires in January.

The loan - which originally stood at £24m - was originally taken out during Hammam's spell in charge of the club

He said: “One thing that gives me confidence Sam will sign is that we are paying off a sum each month.

"He can take us to court in January, but then they won’t get a penny before 2016.

“Sam also indicated that he would like to rejoin the board, but that was a two-minute conversation as our board would never allow that.”
