Mike Lewis replaced Brendan Cropley in goal to
make his debut while there were seasonal debuts for Andrew Collins and Matt
Beynon with Shaun Galsworthy and Craig Baker also making their first starts of
the season. having previously been subs.
With a much changed side it was going to take
us time to settle and we conceded several free kicks in the opening minutes, one
resulting in Chris Pridham being booked in 1 minute 25 seconds. From the
free kick conceded Mike Lewis had his first touch when he caught the free kick
which had been over hit. On 4 minutes Craig Baker played the ball forward to
Nathan White whose control was good and he fed Matt Beynon only for the move to
break down as Matt was offside. This was the first of many such decisions.
Nathan White then fed Corey Thomas in the box but Corey delayed his shot and the
defence recovered and crowded him out.
West End put us under pressure and we were
having difficulty clearing our lines before Ryan Frankcom finally managed it.
Then a 1-2 between Nathan White and Matt Beynon found Nathan in space but like
Corey he delayed his shot and was crowded out. At this point one wondered if
these chances would count against us but there were signs of Nathan and Matt
linking well up front. West End were awarded a free kick 10 yards in their own
half which Andrew Collins headed clear, the ball was played back to the edge of
the area and a West End shot came in but it sailed harmlessly over the bar.
On 16 minutes Mike Lewis came out but couldn't
gather the ball, a West End player shot only for Mike to dive and save around
the penalty spot area, the West End dugout as one shouted for handball before
they realised he was the keeper! From Mike's save the ball went straight
to another West End player who shot at goal but Daniel Lancey was covering Mike
and he cleared the danger. We then had a spell of pressure with Nathan White
cutting in from wide and shooting straight at the keeper and from an Andrew
Collins throw near to the corner flag Carl Evans headed wide.
Another West End free kick was headed clear by
Shaun Galsworthy and when the ball was played back in Carl Evans rose highest to
head the ball behind for a corner. On 32 minutes we were awarded a free kick
just outside the area but the defence headed the ball clear. Nathan White was
again prominent cutting in from the left but his shot was well wide of the
target and minutes later he had another chance which was turned behind for a
corner from which Carl Evans was penalised for climbing over the defender.
On 40 minutes Nathan White gave us the lead,
again he combined well with Matt Beynon and with time and space he shot low to
the keeper's right and just inside the post. We then won a couple of
corners, the second was played to Corey Thomas just outside the area and he hit
a powerful shot which the keeper managed to block with his hands before the ball
was cleared.
We started the second half on top and Corey
Thomas had a shot turned over for a corner from which we won a second but Craig
Baker's cross went behind for a goal kick. On 51 minutes Nathan White made it
2-0, Daniel Lancey made ground and passed to Nathan who was tackled and the ball
went out for a throw. From the throw another White-Beynon 1-2 found Nathan in
space in the area and as the keeper came out he coolly chipped him to make it
two. Just after the hour Beynon squared the ball in to White but he delayed and
delayed his shot having a couple blocked before they cleared it. In this
incident Nicky Pritchard in the West End goal was injured and Ashley Wright took
his place with Kieran Cullen coming on as a sub. In what was now a rare West End
attack Shaun Galsworthy lost the ball but the shot from the edge of the area
went wide.
In our eagerness to score we were offside
several times and failed to test the substitute keeper until 75 minutes when we
were awarded a free kick on the half way the ball was played forward to Nathan
White who shot from the edge of the area. The ball bounced in front of the
keeper and he allowed it to slip through his hands into the corner of the net.
Laurent Fodderie and James McEvoy then replaced Shaun Galsworthy and Ryan
Frankcom and West End now had more attacking opportunities but couldn't reduced
the arrears. Following a Lido corner Daniel Lancey made it 4-0, West End cleared
the corner but Daniel Lancey picked it up about 30 yards out. He dribbled
through several defenders and drilled a low shot from just inside the area
inside the far post.
In added on time Laurent Fodderie and Luke
Borrelli combined down the right and Luke squared the ball for Nathan White to
score his fourth of the night.
