AFAN LIDO 0-1 goytre utd (league Cup semi final)

The rain that caused the postponement of the original tie which then allowed several unavailable Goytre players to play in this tie reared it's ugly head again at half time forcing us to face the elements in the second half. We started the better and created several chances in the first half but one mistake at the back gave Goytre their goal and then they do what Goytre do best, slow the game down and defend in depth relying on the one goal to win them the game.

Damon Thomas won an early ball and played it to Robbie Walters who found Nathan White in space but he hurried his shot and it went wide, Then from a Goytre free kick Mike Lewis knocked it long for Nathan White but he again shot wide. Corey Thomas cleared a Goytre attack and played it up to Chris Pridham but Chris was adjudged to have fouled a Goytre player and they were awarded a free kick which they again overhit to Mike Lewis. Carl Payne made a great run forward and played the ball forward, he was cynically brought down after he played the ball away with neither the ref nor the linesman spotting it. Damon Thomas again picked up the ball and fed Mark Jones who made ground into the box, his cross was blocked at the expense of a corner which was cleared. On 20 minutes Goytre had their best attack but Dale Price shot way over the bar. From a Lido free kick on half way it looked as though we had taken the lead but Robbie Walters header went into the side netting. On the half hour Mark Jones and Robbie Walters combined and found Chris Pridham in space in the area, Chris Curtis managed to turn his header away for another corner. A mix up at the back almost cost us, Mike Lewis called for the ball but Damon Thomas cut it out and set up Goytre but the shot went into the side netting. The half ended with both sides cancelling each other out and it looked like one goal or penalties might decide this match.

The second half saw us face the wind and heavy rain, Scott Hillman powered his way out of defence and played the ball forward to Nathan White who started his run too early and was offside. Just before the hour Scott McCoubrey did well down the left but Mark Jones lost the ball in the area. Then on the hour a long high ball was allowed to bounce just short of our penalty area and Dale Price took advantage to take the ball into the area and shoot past Mike Lewis. We responded well with Nathan White playing the ball forward for Mark Jones but it picked up pace on the wet surface and went through to the keeper. With a quarter of an hour to go Carl Payne's cross was cut out but he played it into the box for Mark Jones to shoot, the ball went behind for a corner. Robbie Walters headed the corner on to Scott Hillman whose shot from 12 yards went over the bar. We continued to push forward looking for an equaliser but we failed to create any clear cut openings. We have one more shot at Goytre this season, our home league game. Let's hope we have a team of officials who are aware of the whole pitch and not just follow the ball, that might just make a difference in the result.
