AFAN LIDO 4-0 ELY RANGERS

We continued our good home form but for the first 30 minutes Ely played their part in an entertaining game and seldom looked like a bottom of the table team.
Ely won an early corner which went beyond the far post, an Ely player headed it against the back of Mike Lewis's head and behind for a second corner which we cleared. On 5 minutes we were awarded a free kick 25 yards out which Chris Pridham rolled to Carl Payne but his shot was blocked and cleared. Ely were then awarded a free kick which although we cleared it wasn't confidently but we got the ball to Nathan White who fed Mark Jones but a defender managed to block Mark and clear the ball. Another Ely attack caught us out but Carl Payne got back to clear only for Ely to be awarded a free kick 30 yards out which Carl Evans cleared, the ball came back in and was played across the face of the goal but no Ely player was up to convert the chance and Scott McCoubrey cleared the danger. On 20 minutes we were awarded a free kick on the edge of the area, Carl Payne's free kick was deflected for a corner which Ely cleared. Ely again attacked when Carl Payne lost the ball in midfield but again their shooting lacked accuracy and the ball went over the bar. On 33 minutes our best bit of football saw Scott McCoubrey play the ball into Nathan White in the area, Nathan drew the defender into the foul and the ref had no hesitation in awarding the penalty which Mark Jones blasted home. From the kick off Shaun Galsworthy intercepted a through ball and found Mark Jones, he shot, the keeper saved but didn't hold it but he recovered just before Nathan White got to the ball. 5 minutes before the break Ely won a series of corners the final one going out for a goal kick. Again Carl Evans headed another free kick behind for a corner which Mike Lewis held and played it to Nathan White, Nathan made ground and we won a corner. Scott McCoubrey's corner was perfect and Carl Evans rose highest to head in on the stroke of half time.
Ely started the second half on the attack and Mike Lewis was off his line to just beat an Ely attacker to the ball. Jonathan Hood played the ball wide to Carl Payne who made ground down the right and appeared to win a corner but the officials gave a goal kick instead. We went three up on 61 minutes when Carl Payne out right crossed in for Mark Jones to beat the defender to the ball and head it past the keeper. We were now on top and Carl Payne from a free kick on the edge of the box shot wide. We made it 4-0 on 77 minutes, the ball was played forward to Nathan White who had a clear run on goal, the keeper saved his shot but Jonathan Hood reacted quickest and scored from the rebound for his first goal for the senior team. We continued to look for goals but in a rare Ely attack Mike Lewis made a fine full length save to keep his clean sheet. In the dying moments Mark Jones had chances with a right foot and a left foot shot both of which went wide of the target.
