cardiff corinthians 1-3 AFAN LIDO

The three points puts us 2 points behind league leaders Goytre United having played the same number of matches. Shaun Galsworthy made his first start since the Bala cup tie while youth team member Dean Hudson was amongst the subs for the first time. There were only two disappointing features in this match, the number of chances we failed to take and we allowed them a late goal, our goal difference could have been greatly improved after tonight. An unusual feature in the game was that we had a female assistant referee who was in charge on the dugout side of the field and did very well, so take a bow Chloe Lloyd.

Virtually from the kick off Shaun Galsworthy pumped the ball down the middle of the field over the Corries back four, both Robbie Walters and Mark Jones looked as if they'd score but they both allowed it to run through to the keeper. Shaun again played the ball forward but it was cut out by a defender and Corries mounted their first attack down the left. The ball was played across the face of our goal with no attacker near enough to score. We then won a series of corners, the second was punched by the keeper to Nathan White but before he could shoot the defence closed him down. On 11 minutes Robbie Walters played Mark Jones in but with only the keeper to beat he shot too close to him and he turned the ball away for a corner, again the keeper punched it away, this time to Robbie Walters but he shot over the bar. Mike Lewis hit a long clearance forward to Robbie Walters, he went around two defenders near the goalline but couldn't keep the ball in play. On 18 minutes Nathan White won us a corner which came out to Mark Jones whose left footed shot went over the bar. On 23 minutes we won a free kick 23 yards out in a central position but Robbie Walters kick hit the wall and was cleared. We took the lead on 28 minutes following a corner, Corey Thomas played it to the near post and Damon Thomas gained a yard on his marker to head the ball from the 6 yard line. Although it hit at least one defender on it's way in as it was goalbound Damon gets the goal, his first since Taffs Well away on February 10th.

We should have doubled the lead two minutes later after Damon went down the left and crossed the ball into the 6 yard box, Nathan only managed to head the ball up and then Mark Jones headed it wide from a couple of yards. Nathan was getting frustrated as several of his shots were good enough to beat the keeper but usually were inches wide of the post. He did this on 33 and 35 minutes the second following a great ball to him from Mark Jones. Carl Payne made a terrific run down the right, got into the box and crossed for Mark Jones but his shot hit the crossbar and went over for a goal kick. 5 minutes before the break following yet another corner which the keeper saved off Mark Jones, Damon Thomas picked up the ball went outside the defender and crossed in to Nathan White who headed the ball to the keeper. Mike Lewis punched clear a Corries free kick and we won a free kick on half way but Jonathan Hood wasted it by over hitting it and it went through to the keeper.

We kicked off the second half and immediately put Corries under pressure but they cleared their lines. Scott Hillman then broke up a Corries attack just in our half and carried the ball forward to the byeline but his cross was cut out by a defender. On 53 minutes we were awarded a free kick 30 yards out which the defence knocked behind for a corner which was cleared but two minutes later we finally scored a second when Nathan White took the ball wide left and crossed it in, the defence had trouble clearing it and with the ball roughly on the penalty spot Carl Payne made great strides to claim the ball and he shot first time into the net for his first goal since Taffs Well at home on April 2nd. We now had a bit of breathing space although Corries were now making some substitutions they never looked like scoring which would have put us under a bit of pressure. Then on 69 minutes from our free kick Corries broke quickly and won a corner (their first) on the left which we cleared. Scott Hillman again won the ball on the half way and went charging into the Corries box but shot over the bar. We scored the third on 73 minutes when Carl Payne won the ball passed to Mark Jones who found Robbie Walters in a good position. Robbie's shot beat the keeper but hit the post and rebounded, Mark reacted first and beat the defenders to knock it into the empty net from a couple of yards. Rob Cockings now replaced Shaun Galsworthy and he was immediately into the action winning the ball and finding Mark Jones who again found Robbie Walters in a good position but he shot just wide of the post. Corries scored with 7 minutes left, they went down their left and crossed into the box for Robbie James to shoot from 10 yards giving Mike Lewis no chance. On 90 minutes Mike Lewis hit found Scott McCoubrey who turned and hit it from the edge of the area but their keeper managed to tip it over the crossbar. Corries made one more attempt to reduce the score but from a free kick they headed over the bar before the final whistle sounded.
