Afan Lido FC match reports

Sept 5

Afan Lido 2-1 Bettws

Shaun Galsworthy secured the three points with his first goal for the club with an 88th minute winner.  We welcomed back Scott McCoubrey for his first game since his return from the States.

Bettws attacked from the kick off and won a corner which we managed to head clear.  We went behind on 9 minutes when some poor defending allowed the ball to be played back to Paul Jones on the edge of the area and he shot powerfully to Mike Lewis's left giving him no chance. We responded positively with Carl Baker crossing in for Carl Payne to head goalwards but he was too far out to trouble the keeper.  That was Craig's last involvement as he was fouled not long afterwards and was stretchered off with Jonathan Hood taking his place.

Bettws obviously switched off as from the restart Carl Evans played the ball forward for Scott McCoubrey to run on to and he lobbed the keeper to level the scores. Bettws then attacked down the left but Mike Lewis comfortably held the shot. Scott McCoubrey then did well to hold the ball and play it to Jonathan Hood, he found Carl Payne overlapping but he couldn't control his cross and it went out for a goal kick.  On 25 minutes we could have gone ahead, Carl Payne played the ball to Nathan White whose cross to the far post was just too strong for Corey Thomas and the chance was lost. 5 minutes before the break we should have been ahead, Nathan White had time to pick his spot but his shot was blocked, the ball rebounded to Scott McCoubrey and his shot was also blocked and rebounded to Nathan who had time to pick his spot but shot straight at the keeper. From the kick out Bettws attacked and Mike Lewis made a great one handed save to keep the scores level.

Again we started the second half poorly and conceded a corner which we cleared to Scott McCoubrey who found Nathan White and on to Daniel Lancey, Daniel crossed into the area but it was headed clear.  On 51 minutes Jonathan Hood played a great cross field ball to Carl Payne who made ground into the box he squared the ball for Nathan White but the defender just got ahead of Nathan and got the ball back to the keeper. On the hour we picked out Nathan White down the left, he made ground and played the ball in for Scott McCoubrey, the ball went behind, the ref gave a goal kick while most thought it was a corner. We had a spell of good possession and passing which ended with Scott McCoubrey shooting first time from the edge of the area but his shot just cleared the crossbar with the keeper beaten.  Another attack saw Nathan White putting in an inviting cross but Scott McCoubrey headed over with Shaun Morgan also waiting for the cross.

Bettws pushed forward and had a good spell of pressure, we were finding it difficult clearing our lines on times. Bettws should have taken the lead with 6 minutes to go when we lost the ball from a throw in and they attacked in numbers but the incoming cross went over the bar. With minutes to go Bettws were awarded a free kick in the D, Carl Evans did really well to block the shot and concede a corner. With three minutes to go Carl Payne was fouled 23 yards out, Jonathan Hood took the free kick and hit it deep, the keeper fumbled the ball and lost it, it was half cleared to Shaun Galsworthy 12 yards out and he hit it first time into the net. Despite late Bettws pressure we held out to gain a valuable 3 points.
