We had the better of this top of the table clash
despite Damon Thomas going off injured after only 14 minutes and Carl
Payne being sent off for two yellow cards on 70 minutes. I don't know
about anyone else but this felt like two points lost although we played
a top of the table side.
For the first ten minutes this was like a boxing match with both
sides sparring giving the other the utmost respect. Damon Thomas made
the first telling contribution when he picked up a loose ball and went
wide right before being fouled 30 yards out. The keeper lost the free
kick, the ball going for a corner. It was headed out to Damon some 30
yards out and his first time shot went just over the bar. We were
passing the ball well despite some difficult conditions and we were now
taking the game to Aberaman, one such move found Carl Payne wide left,
he cut inside but shot straight at the keeper. From his kick out
Aberaman attacked and Mike Lewis failed to hold a 30 yard shot but their
forward in following up only managed to shoot wide from close range. On
12 minutes Scott McCoubrey was fouled 25 yards out but the free kick hit
the wall, we picked up the rebound and played it wide to Jonathan Hood
who shot from a tight angle forcing the keeper to save at the near post.
On 21 minutes a Lido attack was broken up and they attacked down our
left side, the winger beating several defenders and winning a corner
which Mike Lewis did well to punch the ball clear under pressure. Mike
then nearly conceded a goal when he came out of the area to head the
ball clear but he only managed to find an Aberaman attacker who shot at
the empty net but Scott Hillman had covered Mike and cleared the danger.
Just after the half hour Nathan White received the ball in the box but
delayed his shot, he played it back to Carl Payne who from a good
position shot wide. Mark Jones tried his luck from 30 yards with the
keeper off his line but he didn't get enough elevation on the ball and
the keeper was able to jump to collect Mark's shot.
Scott McCoubrey was unlucky on 49 minutes
when he took a corner and their keeper managed to punch the ball off the
line and out into the area where an Aberaman defender was able to clear.
Jonathan Hood picked up a loose ball and shot from 25 yards, the ball
his a defender and looped up over everyone and just missed the post, the
ball going out for a corner. Just after the hour Chris Pridham shot from
just outside the area forcing the keeper into a diving save, Nathan
White was first to react, he played it back in but we weren't strong
enough in the area to take advantage. Aberaman should have taken the
lead on 66 minutes when they worked the ball down the left, crossed it
in and had a spare player on the right. He shot from inside the six yard
box but Mike Lewis somehow got a hand to it to turn it over for a
corner. An Aberaman player was booked on the hour and within seconds
Carl Payne followed, worse was to follow for Carl when he and a defender
went to head the ball, they were both injured but on the linesman's say
Carl received a second yellow and was then sent off leaving us 20
minutes to play with 10 men. With 7 minutes to go following a corner
played out to him Nathan White shot first time into a packed goalmouth,
the ball was eventually cleared to Jonathan Hood who shot over the bar
from 25 yards. From the goal kick Gavin Jones made a great run beating
several players before shooting from 25 yards and hitting the post. All
our good work was almost undone in the closing minutes when Mike Lewis
mispunched the ball but with him out of position Shaun Galsworthy
covered and headed a goalbound shot behind for a corner. The game ended
with us again attacking and another Gavin Jones run and shot ended with
the keeper saving. It was interesting that their sponsors named their
keeper as man of the match.
