All good runs of form come to an end but having
got back to 2-2 in added on time to then lose was diabolical. I think a number
of players wished this had been called off as we couldn't string two passes
together for much of the game. Neath could have taken the lead after only two
minutes from a corner but Remi Whitelock headed off the line and Gareth Couch
was then awarded a free kick after he was fouled. They did take the lead and
score the first goal against the Reserves at home this season when they attacked
down the left and crossed into the 6 yard box, the resultant volley flying past
Couchie into the goal.
On 14 minutes they were two up when we
knocked out a corner back to the corner taker, he crossed into the box Couchie
came out and completely misjudged it and the ball flew over his head into the
net. At this point Neath were coasting and it was difficult to see how we were
going to score. In the first half we lost both Corey Thomas (28) and Shaun
Morgan (43) with cuts to their legs.
We won a corner in the opening minutes of
the second half but Aaron Keefe headed over from just inside the six yard box.
Karl Lewis then passed to Adam Beynon with his back to goal but he turned and
shot from the penalty spot bringing a fine save out of the Neath keeper. We
should have pulled one back on 52 minutes when from a long ball out of defence
by Matthew Beynon, Mark Buckley crossed from almost on the byeline to Steve
Hughes who from a couple of yards headed wide. Neath broke up one of our attacks
and broke into the box but shot wide when it was easier to score. The next Neath
attack saw them lob Couchie from outside the box and it looked as though it was
in but it dropped just over the crossbar.
After 67 minutes Karl Lewis shot from just
outside the area, the keeper saved but couldn't hold it and Steve Hughes
followed up to win the ball but was too wide to make use of it but he won a
corner which was cleared. On 81 minutes we pulled a goal back, most people would
have given Neath a free kick for hand ball but the ref missed it and awarded a
goal to Adam Beynon. In the first minute of added time we were level, Remi
Whitelock played a through ball onto Matthew Beynon's head and he beat the
keeper. It looked as though we'd at least keep our unbeaten tag going but after
90 + 3 minutes Gareth Couch had the ball 30 yards from goal, instead of knocking
forward into the Neath area he flicked the ball up to kick it. All he did
was kick the ball against an attacker, the ball ballooned high into the air and
back towards our goal, A Neath attacker got there before us and slotted the ball
into the empty net to undo our recovery. We kicked off and the final whistle
sounded!
