Newport YMCA League game
Good afternoon and
welcome to the officials, players and supporters of Newport YMCA
Football Club to the Marston’s Stadium for this afternoon’s
MacWhirter Welsh League Division One match.
I’d
also like to welcome our referee Richard Harrington from Aberdare and
his assistants Roger Fisher also from Aberdare and Lee Walters from
Treharris.
Our
opponents are currently bottom of the table having lost to Goytre in
midweek. For 30 minutes
they looked anything but a bottom side in taking a deserved lead then
Goytre put their foot on the gas and run out 5-1 winners.
Any game against our opponents is always tough and I'm expecting
no different today.
Our
last home match saw us put in a dreadful performance against Aberaman
losing 3-0 and we just didn't turn up on the day.
Attitude, commitment and desire were all missing and the players
were told in no such circumstances would a performance like that be
tolerated again.
Last
Saturday we visited Caldicot Town and were unlucky not to have come away
with all 3 points after drawing the game 3-3.
We were 3-1 down at half time, once again the side showed great
character in fighting back. Sam Wade came off the bench and made a huge impact in the
game scoring one goal and setting up Scott McCoubrey for his second goal
of the game. We hit the
woodwork twice and on another day could easily have come away with all 3
points.
On
Tuesday we travelled to Barry Town and gained an excellent 2-0 victory.
On a flat pitch which was conducive to play good football we
passed the ball around comfortably and quickly with us going in at the
interval 2-0 up. Goals from Sam Wade and Scott McCoubrey put us in the
ascendency and we held on comfortably in the second half to put us into
7th position. Our very
young side acquitted themselves superbly with 9 of the 14 players being
20 years old or younger. It
was very refreshing to see players like Mark Jones playing in midfield
and Mica Chunuonsee playing in central defence.
Rory McCreesh had a sound game in goals and once again Sam Wade
proved to be a real thorn in their side all evening with his clever
footwork and running.
Enjoy the game,
