Afan Lido FC match reports

Apr 4

Newport YMCA 1-1 Afan Lido

Carl Evans, Justin Williams and Leigh Shrimpton were missing from Tuesday's line up, Daniel Lancey returned from injury with Luke Borrelli and Andrew Collins moving up from the bench. It was 16 year old Collins first start while another 16 year old James McEvoy was on the bench.

One bonus that Andrew Collins provided was a long throw and several times it created problems for the home side. There was drama after 9 minutes when following a throw into the box the YM number 6 Boris Emane allegedly butted Rhys Williams and was sent off while we were awarded a penalty. Scott McCoubrey took the penalty but Scott Anderson the home keeper saved the penalty, the ball rebounded to Scott and with the keeper still on the floor managed to hit the post with his follow up, the ball rebounded to safety. The YM pitch isn't one of the best and ball control is almost impossible, the YM play a long ball game getting it to their front runners as quickly as possible. We went behind on 19 minutes when Luke Borrelli was adjudged to have brought a player down in the area and Gareth Lynch their number 2 scored his penalty with ease, sending Rory McCreesh the wrong way. This lifted the YM who are desperate for points at the bottom of the league and they now played one up and the packed their defence. On 24 minutes James McEvoy replaced Adam Carpenter who had a recurrence of his hamstring injury and his first contribution was to head a Mica Chunuonsee corner over the crossbar. On the half hour Daniel Lancey cut inside and played the ball to Carl Payne who chested the ball into the path of Luke Borrelli he made ground but shot wide from 15 yards. Little went right for us in the first half highlighted by the last action, a Scott McCoubrey corner that hit the side netting. We would need to up our game in the second half to get something out of this.

Our best chance of the second half to date came after 53 minutes when Mika Chunuonsee took a fee kick 25 yards from goal forcing their keeper to make a fine diving save. James McEvoy was doing well in midfield and he spread the ball wide to Carl Payne who squared the ball into Craig Langdon but his shot from the edge of the area went wide. The equaliser came on 65 minutes when for once we took a short free kick and then won a throw level with the area. Andrew Collins launched it into the area and the YM defence failed to deal with it and Scott McCoubrey on the edge of the area scored with a right footed shot just inside the post. This gave us more confidence and deflated to some effect the YM side. However on 73 minutes Rory McCreesh made a first class save to keep the scores level to remind us that the YM were still in the game. Somehow on 83 minutes the YM again failed to score, from our position it looked easier to score than miss but we managed to clear the ball. In the final 5 minutes Craig Langdon received the ball out wide and crossed into the box, the defender just beat Luke Borrelli to it and headed clear. We pressed for a winner in the final moments and their keeper made a save off Mika Chunuonsee while a Craig Langdon cross landed on the roof of the net. In added on time a left wing corner was headed just wide by Rhys Williams. YM in the last 10 minutes picked up three bookings as they tried to unsettle the lads but the referee was wise to their tactics. By the way Vince Lewis replaced Corey Thomas with 18 minutes left and one wag in the crowd reckoned he'd doubled the team's average age.
