When you lose by five goals all you can look for are any positives you can
take from the game. In all honesty I find it difficult to find any.
Taffs Well persisted in playing route one football and we failed to deal with
it, the pitch didn't help our style of football and the result wasn't helped by
two penalties, from memory the first we've conceded this season. Rhys
Williams was ill and replaced by Matthew Beynon at centre back.
Although we went behind in 6 minutes we almost went behind after 2, they
played the ball into the 6 yard box and the player not realising the time he had
back headed the ball over the bar. Taffs Well were awarded a free kick on
half way and with everyone expecting a ball into the box they played it short.
We won the ball and played it forward to Scott McCoubrey who was tackled and
lost possession, the ball was knocked forward to their 10, Jamal Roberts about
40 yards out, he made ground and shot from 25 yards leaving Rory McCreesh
flatfooted on his line.
On 13 minutes they had a throw on the left side
level with the edge of the area, again they could have scored as the throw was
headed on and with Rory rooted to the spot the ball went over the bar from an
overhead kick. We then had our first real chance when Carl Payne played
the ball wide to Daniel Lancey and he crossed low to the far post, it was just
too far ahead of Shaun Morgan but Scott McCoubrey beyond the far post managed to
get a shot in but it lacked direction and power. After 20 minutes the linesman
flagged giving Taffs Well offside but the referee gave them a free kick on half
way for a foul, the kick went into the area but Corey Thomas cleared it after a
Taffs player miskicked when well placed.
After 26 minutes we had our best
move so far when we coolly played the ball out from the back and found Daniel
Lancey wide left he made ground and won a throw on the corner flag. On the
half hour a long ball from the back was headed on by Shaun Morgan to Scott
McCoubrey he cut inside but shot wide from 10 yards. Mica Chunuonsee was
fouled 20 yards out but Scott McCoubrey hit the wall with the free kick.
On 41 minutes we went two down, a long ball into the area wasn't dealt with
properly but the ball was coming out of the area, Carl Payne and a Taffs player
challenged for the ball, Carl won the ball but the Taffs player rolled around as
if he'd been shot and the ref awarded a penalty which Lloyd Toghill (8) netted.
We were awarded the first corner of the game after 61 minutes Corey Thomas had
played the ball wide to Adam Carpenter whose cross was turned behind, Mica took
the corner and it was turned behind for a second. Remi Whitelock took this
but unlike Caerleon where Shaun Morgan headed home from a Remi corner this went
straight to the keeper. We attacked down the left on 69 minutes with
Daniel Lancey crossing in to Scott McCoubrey but he was caught offside. A
minute later we had an indirect free kick in a central position, it was touched
for Scott McCoubrey but he shot into the wall.
On 72 minutes Matthew Beynon knocked the ball behind for a corner which a
Taffs player appeared to head over for a goal kick but they were awarded another
corner which we cleared. This was the start of a disastrous few minutes
for us as on 76 minutes a Taffs cross into the area saw one Taffs player and
three defenders plus Rory. Rory went up with the Taffs player to catch the
ball but he dropped it, normally that would be a free kick but not only did we
not get a free kick but the linesman awarded a penalty for us tugging the Taffs
player's shirt. Again Toghill scored the penalty, minutes later Corey
Thomas clearly headed the ball out for a throw, there didn't appear to be any
contact with any Taffs player but the ref awarded a free kick. We failed
to deal with the free kick and their 14 Stuart Olson who had only been on the
field 3 minutes scored.
In added on time they scored a fifth to send their
supporters into raptures of joy, we returned home to reflect on the game and to
prepare for the semi final against Bridgend on Tuesday.
