Afan Lido FC match reports

SEP 5th

Goytre Utd 2-0 Afan Lido

For 80 minutes we looked as though we would gain at least a point.  We had the better scoring opportunities but failed to take them and it cost us dearly. A big plus was Shaun Morgan's return and he gave a solid
performance in the back four.

We kicked off in torrential rain and both sides started quietly however after 4 minutes we won a corner on the left. Ian Turner swung it in and the ball was headed back out towards him. He knocked in a first time cross and the Goytre defence tried to play the offside trap but they left 4 of our players unmarked in the box. Ian's cross found Mark Jones 12 yards out and he headed it past Chris Curtis in goal but agonisingly inches wide of the right hand post. We continued our good start when Shaun Morgan broke up a Goytre attack and played the ball wide to Tomos Wellington, he crossed the ball in from the right but it eluded everyone and ran out for a goal kick.

After 10 minutes Goytre had their first real sight of goal but David Kingdom blocked the shot and the ball eventually ran out for a goal kick. Again we attacked down the right and again Tomos Wellington played in a cross for Mark Jones but it was just too far ahead of him and was gathered by the keeper. Leon Cosker was called into action on 24 minutes when Robbie Walters got free and shot from just outside the area but Leon dived to his left to save the goalbound effort. Again when Goytre attacked Shaun Morgan defended well and cleared with us winning a throw on the left. Mike Waters took it and threw to Ian Jones, he combined with Mark Jones but when Mark returned the ball to Ian he was adjudged offside just outside the area. Just after the half hour we had a free kick 35 yards out, David Kingdom knocked the ball forward and it ricocheted off a Goytre defender to Shaun Morgan, he managed to knock the ball forward but just out of Mark Jones's path and the ball went behind for a goal kick. We had another opportunity to take the lead 10 minutes before the break, Mark Jones found Ian Jones on the edge of the area, Ian made room and shot but it was a good height for Chris Curtis who saved to his right turning the ball behind for a corner which although bobbling about in the area for a while was eventually cleared. Two minutes later we had another corner which Ian Turner played in to the near post, the ball hit the post before bouncing clear.

5 minutes before the break we had yet another free kick which Curtis punched out to Mike Waters but his shot from just outside the area was charged down and Goytre broke clear to win a corner on their right. It nearly proved costly for us as Darren Lyons arrived late and wasn't picked up and his header went inches wide of the near post. We again attacked down the right and with a player advantage in the middle Damon Thomas's cross was crucially cut out by Ian Morgan. Goytre then attacked and for the first time Richard Ryan was free but he shot wide from just inside the area. Right on half time a Mike Waters free kick by dropped by Chris Curtis but he recovered before we could take advantage. Straight from the second half kick off Goytre attacked down their right and despite us having several chances to clear we managed to give them a corner. The ball was knocked in but David Kingdom got to it first and headed out for a second corner from which we were awarded a goal kick. Ian Turner knocked the ball down the line to Damon Thomas, his cross was punched out to Ian Jones but his shot was saved.

5 minutes into the half Mike Waters played the ball to Ian Jones he ran at the defender before playing the ball to Mark Jones, Mark's shot went wide but Damon Thomas was making ground at the far post but unfortunately he slipped before getting to the ball. From the goal kick we won the ball and played it forward to Mark Jones but his shot was straight at Curtis in goal. On the hour Goytre attacked and played the ball in to the box but it was headed behind for a goal kick. Both sides then had a series of free kicks that came to nothing before Ian Turner crossed to Mark Jones he played it in to Ian Jones but his shot was saved by Curtis. Goytre won a free kick on their right on the edge of the box, Carl Evans did extremely well to head the ball from under the crossbar and away for a corner. We cleared the corner to Mike Waters who made ground and found Ian Jones but Ian was offside. With 9 minutes to go we went behind, Goytre played a long ball out of defence and for once we were the wrong side of Richard Ryan, he made ground and scored from just inside the area giving Cosker no chance. This knocked us and we struggled to get back in the game we conceded a free kick just outside the area, Dale Price hitting the crossbar with his shot. 2 minutes from time we gifted Goytre a second when some poor defending just outside our six yard box allowed Dale Price all the time in the world to select his spot and seal the win.
