Afan Lido FC match reports

Feb 7 - 2009

Afan Lido 1-1 Cwmbran Town

Twelve months ago we drew 1-1 with Cwmbran having had the better of the first half but we allowed them to come back into the game and they got a late equaliser. Roll on 12 months and the same thing happened. Rhys Williams was fit again after last week and Frank Sinatra or Carl Evans as he's known at the Lido made yet another comeback.

We had a chance in the first minute when Mica Chunuonsee played the ball to Scott McCoubrey who beat a couple of players but then shot wide from the edge of the area. We should have taken the lead after 6 minutes when Daniel Lancey made ground down the left and crossed into the area, Mica Chunuonsee made ground and had a free header which he placed to the right of the keeper (Mark Poole) who managed to stick out his arm and divert the ball for a corner.

Cwmbran had their first chance after 9 minutes when they were awarded a free kick just outside the area but Rory McCreesh safely held the shot. We took the lead after 16 minutes when Mica Chunuonsee won a corner kick which Remi Whitelock played in to Scott McCoubrey who flicked the ball on to Carl Payne on the edge of the 6 yard box and he volleyed in with his right foot. A minute later it could have been two but Carl Payne on the edge of the area shot wide when he should at least have hit the target. The referee then played a good advantage to allow Carl Payne to make ground and lay the ball off to Scott McCoubrey but once again from a good position he fired wide. Again the Cwmbran keeper made an important save turning a Daniel Lancey shot behind for a corner but we failed to make it count when Carl Evans headed over the bar. Just before the half hour Cwmbran won a free kick 35 yards out in a central position but Scott Morris (11) shot wide. We continued to press for a second but usually the last pass let us down, 10 minutes before the break Mica Chunuonsee held the ball waiting for support laid it off to Scott McCoubrey but once again he shot wide. 5 minutes before the break we broke quickly and played Daniel Lancey in from the half way but the Cwmbran defence recovered and when he got to the edge of the area they blocked his shot.

From the second half kick off we attacked down the left and Daniel Lancey fired in a shot which the keeper dived to his left to save. With the elements in their favour Cwmbran started playing a long ball down the middle hoping to pick up the loose ball. We responded by winning another corner but it was cleared Cwmbran were then awarded a free kick 35 yards out in a central position but the shot was straight at Rory McCreesh. Too many times in the second half we made ground down the left and crossed to close to the keeper who gathered safely each time. On 73 minutes Cwmbran should have equalised, Adam Carpenter lost the ball they played a long ball forward but shot over the bar from the edge of the area. With 15 minutes to go we should have been two up when the ball was played forward to Daniel Lancey who made ground and shot from just inside the area, the keeper dived and turned the ball onto the post and it was cleared before anyone could follow up. Cwmbran piled on the pressure with 10 minutes to go and we conceded the equaliser, they won a corner on the left which we partially cleared, it was knocked back in to Robbie Fowler who headed in from 6 yards. Encouraged by this Cwmbran poured forward looking for a winner but we almost caught them on the break when Scott McCoubrey went through the middle, knocked it wide to Shaun Best who crossed for Carl Payne but he didn't get a good enough touch on the ball and it went wide. In added on time Cwmbran cleared another attack to Adam Carpenter 30 yards from goal, he shot and for the second time in the game the keeper turned a shot onto the post and away for a corner which we failed to use.

A disappointing result after some good football played especially in the first half but we must learn to be more clinical in front of goal too many chances are being wasted.
