It's difficult to assess this game, is it a point gained having been two
goals down at half time or two points lost because we didn't go on and win.
We started well and settled better than the home side and could have led as
early as the fifth minute when a length of the field move found Scott McCoubrey
but he failed to find any power in his shot which went to the keeper. Two
minutes later Mark Jones made ground into the area but was tackled, the ball
fell to Michael Waters who brought a good save out of the keeper but the ball
fell to Ian Jones 15 yards out and he hit the post with his first time shot.
Again we swept forward when from a Caldicot free kick Leon Cosker threw out to
Mark Jones who held the ball until Michael Waters arrived and we won a free kick
which Tomos Wellington played in and the keeper was forced under pressure to
punch clear. Ian Turner then intercepted a through ball and passed to
Michael Waters, he played a diagonal ball into the box Scott McCoubrey stepped
over it and Ian Jones shot just wide. After all that we went behind,
Caldicot played the ball from a central position to their full back who was
unmarked, he made ground into the area and shot across Leon Cosker into the net.
Within two minutes we were level, a simple ball forward caught out the central
defenders and Scott McCoubrey took the ball past the keeper to knock the ball
into the empty net. Poor defending on our part saw us go 2-1 down after 33
minutes and worse still on 35 we went 3-1 down when we failed to clear a free
kick.
We came out for the second half in determined mood and Mark Jones weaved his way
across the area but wasn't able to get in a shot. We had the bulk of
possession in the early period of the second half but didn't make the best use
of it.
After 54 minutes Michael Waters shot over the bar from the edge of
the area from the goal kick Ian Turner fed Michael Waters who crossed to Mark
Jones but his header was straight at the keeper. We finally pulled a goal
back on 62 minutes when Mark Jones had a shot blocked and it fell to Scott
McCoubrey who beat a defender before shooting low to the keeper's right.
Minutes later Corey Thomas hit the crossbar from just outside the area and we
then won a corner which Tomos Wellington knocked in to the near post, the keeper
fumbled it under pressure but the ball went the wrong side of the post for
another corner to us.
From the pressure we were putting on it was unlikely
we wouldn't score but when it came it was in unusual circumstances. It
stemmed from a Caldicot goal kick which the keeper knocked straight to Ian Jones
some 25 yards out, Ian made ground and played it into Sam Wade's path, as the
keeper closed him down he steered it past him into the net. We now had 19
minutes to find a winner but we needed an excellent save from Leon Cosker to
keep the scores level when he tipped over a free kick. We kept throwing
bodies forward and the only way Caldicot were going to score was by catching us
on the break.
With 7 minutes to go Michael Waters fed Corey Thomas who
from the edge of the area shot through a crowd of players but straight at the
keeper. In added on time a cross from Tomos Wellington to the far post was
headed wide by Mark Jones with Ian Jones behind him in a better position to
score.
