A minutes silence was held ahead of the kick off in memory of former keeper
Colin Rees who sadly passed away last week.
Three goals in a six minute spell just after the half hour settled this
game. The only disappointing feature was that we failed to increase our
goal tally.
We played with a strong breeze and created most of the early chances and in
the 6th minute we should have been ahead. Scott McCoubrey took a right
wing
corner and found Karl Lewis but his free header went just wide. Mark Jones
showed good strength in the area when he beat a couple of defenders but shot
over the bar.
Caerleon's best effort of the game came in the 19th minute
when Carl Evans lost the ball and Luke Cueto shot from the edge of the area,
the ball trickling agonisingly (for them) inches wide. Minutes later a
long
ball caught us out but Shaun Morgan recovered to give away a corner. Shaun
then lost the ball on half way but again recovered to make a good challenge
in the area. Just on the half hour we had a free kick which the Caerleon
defence failed to clear and Ian Turner crossed in but Mark Jones header went
over the bar. Then on 33 minutes we took the lead, Scott McCoubrey fed
Darren Griffiths wide left, he beat a couple of players and crossed into the
six yard box where Scott just beat a couple of other Lido players to tap it
in from a couple of yards. Two minutes later Scott almost made it two when
he lobbed the keeper but a defender managed to get back and lift the ball
via the crossbar for a corner.
The second goal wasn't long in coming
however when we took a quick free kick on the left touchline Michael Waters
fed Karl Lewis who found Scott McCoubrey who picked out Mark Jones in the
six yard box, he turned and shot across the keeper and into the net. On 39
minutes it was three, Caerleon again failed to deal with a free kick,
Michael Waters knocked it into the far post and Mark Jones had the simple
task of heading it into the net. Then Scott McCoubrey received the ball
wide left, he cut inside a shot but his shot drifted just wide of the far
post.
5 minutes into the second half Scott McCoubrey was at it again, he beat a
couple of defenders but again he shot wide of the far post. We continued
to
control the second half but were guilty of over elaborating on times.
Several good opportunities were passed up, Caerleon's only chance of the
half came from a thirty yard free kick which Leon Cosker dived to save.
With a quarter of an hour to go both Mark Jones and Scott McCoubrey had
efforts cleared off the line while their keeper made a good save off an Ian
Jones header just before the end. In the last minute following a corner we
were awarded a penalty for hand ball. Same Wade took it and coolly slotted
it past the keeper.
