Before this match Caerleon had won only one and lost eight of their nine home
games. A couple of weeks ago this would have been a banker away win but
with changes that have taken place that was no longer a probability. But with
four minutes left on the clock we were two ahead and looking good for a first
win at Caerleon. They were pushing forward looking for some consolation
but unfortunately they got a second bite of the cherry and earned an unlikely
point.
We started the game well and took the lead after 4 minutes when Remi Whitelock
perfectly delivered a right wing corner onto the head of Shaun Morgan who
buried his header giving the keeper no chance. This was just what we
needed and it's the first time we've been in the lead at Caerleon. Daniel Lancey
cut in from the left and squared the ball to the waiting Shaun Morgan but the
ball was cut out by a defender just before it reached Shaun who was well placed
in the area. On the quarter hour Adam Carpenter played a diagonal ball
into the box and found Corey Thomas in space but his first time shot lacked
power and was easily saved by the keeper. A rare Caerleon attack was
broken up but there was an element of panic in the defence, something that was
going to come back and haunt us in the dying minutes. Having cleared the ball we
again played Corey Thomas into the box but again his shot lacked power and the
chance was lost. Another Remi Whitelock corner was headed out by the
defence to Matthew Beynon who was lurking unmarked beyond the far post but his
first time shot hit the side netting. Rory McCreesh wasn't called into action
until the 28th minute and he comfortably held a 30 yard shot, the ball was
played forward to Scott McCoubrey who cut in and shot from 30 yards. There
was plenty of power in the shot and the ball was swerving but the keeper
managed to keep it out. 5 minutes before the break Rhys Williams, Scott
McCoubrey and Shaun Morgan combined and Shaun played the ball in for Adam
Carpenter but the Caerleon defence once again just intercepted.
Straight from the restart Caerleon attacked and Rory McCreesh dived to his left
to make a comfortable save. Scott McCoubrey tried his luck with a 30 yard
free kick which went just over the bar. Caerleon responded with a free
kick of their own but again their effort went over the bar. Daniel Lancey
was having a good game on the left and after Matthew Beynon found him with a cross field pass he beat the defender but shot just wide. We should have
gone two up after 64 minutes when their keeper fumbled a Scott McCoubrey free
kick, Matthew Beynon followed up and shot from a couple of yards, the keeper was
still on the floor but he stuck his leg out to divert the shot over the bar.
Another fine passing movement saw Mika Chunuonsee lay the ball into Shaun
Morgan's path and his shot from the edge of the box was inches wide. After
69 minutes we got the goal we deserved, Daniel Lancey again cut in from the left
and he shot wide of the keeper and into the right hand side of the goal.
Yet another free kick for us almost gave us a third goal, again we combined well
and Shaun Morgan's shot was saved by the keeper at the expense of another
corner. Out of the blue Caerleon pulled a goal back on 87 minutes when
they played a free kick into the area, we struggled to clear it with a couple of
players miskicking. The ball was played to the far post where Luke Cueto
who had played full back all the game headed in. Straight from the kick off
Matthew Beynon conceded a free kick 20 yards out but they fired it straight into
the wall and we cleared it but Caerleon had their tails up now and kept pressing
forward. We were unable to cope with this and it was no surprise that in
the 93 minute Cueto was there to head in what 10 minutes earlier was an unlikely
equaliser.
