A 90th minute goal by Scott McCoubrey, his
thirteenth league goal, gave us a league double over the home side. Leigh
Shrimpton, Daniel Lancey and Craig Langdon were all injured from the cup final
line up so Shaun Best and Remi Whitelock moved up from the bench, Adam Carpenter
who was cup tied returned with Luke Borrelli being called up to the bench.
Bryntirion played towards the club end with a
strong breeze at their backs and they attacked from the kick off but the ball
ran out for a goal kick. We should have taken the lead after 6 minutes when Mika
Chunuonsee took a quick free kick in the centre circle and found Carl Payne
unmarked on the edge of the area. Carl took a couple of touches and shot, the
ball ending in the side netting with Josh Payne in goal being credited with the
save. Bryntirion were awarded a couple of free kicks which if they hit long
tended to go out for a goal kick or went through to Rory McCreesh in goal.
However one they played short and only a well timed tackle in the box by Shaun
Best prevented a cross into the danger zone.
We were putting ourselves under pressure
because we were clearing the Bryntirion attacks but not finding our players so
the ball was coming straight back into the danger area. On 19 minutes under
extreme pressure Carl Evans rose above everyone and cleared from in the 6 yard
box but it seemed a matter of time before Bryntirion would score. After 22
minutes we were awarded a free kick which found Carl Payne he laid the ball off
to Carl Evans who found Scott McCoubrey on the edge of the area but the
Bryntirion defence quickly closed him down and they cleared the ball. Rory
McCreesh was alert and dived to save at his near post from a quickly taken
Bryntirion free kick and from his clearance we were awarded a free kick. Mika
Chunuonsee found Scott McCoubrey in space but Scott was unable to control the
ball and it was cleared. 7 minutes before the break a Bryntirion throw into the
box caused problems and only a brilliant Carl Evans header from under the
crossbar kept the blank scoreline. Scott McCoubrey headed a Lido free kick at
the keeper and his long clearance caught us out. The ball was played wide right
and crossed into the box but David Ham (9) shot over the bar from 7 yards.
We started the second half more positively
with James McEvoy replacing Remi Whitelock and Adam Carpenter switching to left
back. On 50 minutes Carl Payne played Scott McCoubrey into the box, Scott went
down under the defender's challenge but the ref waved play on. Bryntirion
perhaps should have gone ahead after 54 minutes when a free kick was played to
the far post and two of them went for the same back and they only succeeded in
knocking it out for a goal kick. Adam Carpenter knocked a great ball in to Scott
McCoubrey but the ball picked up pace off the pitch and he failed to control it
when in a good position. On the hour Rhys Williams in trying to clear from our
right hand corner was boxed in and in trying to clear fouled and was booked.
From the free kick Carl Evans headed it straight to an attacker who again fired
over the bar. We almost took the lead on 69 minutes following a free kick by the
corner flag. The ball was played in and Carl Evans got above everyone and
directed his header goalwards but a defender on the line managed to head it out.
A minute later Carl Evans was booked and in the same incident Shaun Best and
Bryntirion's Craig Rees were sent off.
After 75 minutes Adam Carpenter had the ball
wide left and his cross beat everyone and hit the post before going out for a
goal kick. With 6 minutes to go Corey Thomas was fouled 25 yards out in a
central position but Scott McCoubrey's shot sailed over the crossbar. Corey had
to come off just afterwards and Vince Lewis took his place and he almost won the
game but he failed to get a touch to a Mika Chunuonsee free kick with only the
keeper to beat. However on 90 minutes Vince was instrumental in us getting the
winner when from a Carl Evans pass he headed the ball through for Scott
McCoubrey some 25 yards out. Scott had timed his run and beaten the offside trap
and as the keeper came out shot past him into the right hand corner. There was 4
minutes of added time which we saw out without too much alarm.
