report by Peter Reynolds
With Taffs Well
fighting relegation this was always going to be a difficult game
but was made all the more difficult by some incompetent
refereeing. Players on both sides were booked for contesting
awards of free kicks against them but some awful challenges only
resulted in free kicks.
As the Welsh
Premier season has ended Taffs brought Haydn Fleming in to their
side while Steve Loverso who has also been playing for Cwmbran was
available.
Taffs took the
lead after 14 minutes, Wyn Walters punched clear a corner which
went straight to Adam Moore who shot, Wyn got his hands to it but
couldn't keep it out. Not the stormiest of characters Wyn
protested to the ref that he'd been impeded but all he had was a
yellow card for his trouble.
We equalised on
27 minutes when we played the ball over their defence, their
keeper came racing outside the area but Ian Jones just got to it
before him and fed the supporting Liam McCreesh who fired the ball
into the empty net.
Rhys Jones of
Taffs was sent off after 68 minutes for a second yellow and four
minutes later they took the lead in controversial circumstances.
Liam was injured in the Taffs penalty area but they didn't knock
the ball out of play.
Haydn Fleming
charged forward and shot from 25 yards forcing Wyn into a flying
save at the expense of a corner. The referee then allowed Liam
treatment but wouldn't allow a substitution until the corner was
taken, as you'd expect, Taffs scored from the corner, Steve
Loverso heading home at the near post.
The ref then allowed our substitution but not before he dismissed
Phil Holmes from the dugout for protesting about the decision.
On 78 minutes Ian
Jones levelled matters when Craig Jones sent in a diagonal cross
for Ian to head home from around the penalty spot.
We still had time
for more controversy as Phil Holmes was a sub and was going to
replace Craig Martin but the referee refused to allow the
substitution even threatening to abandon the game despite the
injuries, substitutions and the disagreement with Phil, the ref
blew up with 44 minutes 55 seconds on my stopwatch which I started
at kick off and didn't stop during the half.
Taffs Well now
have one game left, Bettws away on Saturday, anything more than a
win and they will join Briton Ferry and Llwydcoed in Division 2.
