WELSH LEAGUE U19

PORT TALBOT 3-1 AFAN LIDO

By Peter Reynolds

If we've played worse than this this season then I'm glad I missed it. Players seemed to think they only had to go on the field and the game was won. Some players took delight in hitting 50 and 60 yard passes, unfortunately most went to a blue jersey. Early on we fed Luke Borrelli but as the game wore on this option seemed to disappear. It could have been so different, inside the first 10 minutes a Luke Borrelli cross was cut out but the ball reached Carl Payne whose shot hit the keepers legs and bounced to safety. Luke then shot from outside the box but his shot went wide, we pushed forward and Port Talbot tried to catch us on the break. We could easily have conceded a penalty on the half hour, Nathan Hodgson tackled a forward from behind, he went down but the ref gave a goal kick. We went down the other end and Joel Kabia hit the crossbar from eight yards. Port Talbot attacked and their centre forward turned Darren Franks made ground and hit the post with Rory McCreesh beaten. This gave the home side a lift and they then won a corner, a poor clearance by Remi Whitelock forced Rory to punch the ball clear under pressure.

5 minutes before the interval we went behind, it led from a Lido free kick which was cleared up to their main striker, he was one on one with Darren Franks who managed to knock the ball out for a throw. The throw went into the box, one striker with at least four defenders, the striker shot first time and found the back of the net. If that was bad enough we went 2-0 down within 22 seconds of the second half, Port Talbot kicked off and attacked, Nathan Hodgson missed his tackle allowing the striker to shoot and beat Rory McCreesh for number two. From the kick off we were awarded a free kick, the ball was played into the box and Matthew Beynon in a pack of players headed home to at least give us a chance. Another Lido free kick was punched clear by the keeper and they broke quickly forcing a save from Rory McCreesh.

On 64 minutes we should have been level, Luke Borrelli crossed from the right, it beat the keeper and Damon Thomas with an open goal didn't make contact from six yards. It was to prove a critical miss as we then lost the ball in the back to allow another strike which made it 3-1 and unless things changed for the better it was game over. With just over twenty minutes to go Port Talbot hit the post and we then had a goal disallowed when an Umberto Brassiello shot was parried by the keeper and Joel Kabia following up netted but the linesman gave offside. We forced several corners in the last few minutes but other than an overhead Carl Payne shot which went straight to the keeper Port Talbot dealt with them.
