WELSH LEAGUE U19

AFAN LIDO 0-4 Merthyr Tydfil

By Peter Reynolds

An under strength side struggled against, on this form the best youth side to have played at the Marston's Stadium so far this season. Merthyr had all the early pressure and as early as the fourth minute Rory McCreesh was called into action making a one handed save low to his left with the ball being cleared for a corner.

Our earliest opportunity fell to Damon Thomas some 30 yards out but his shot flew wide.  We went behind after twelve minutes when after a left wing throw in we failed to clear the ball out of the area, the ball going straight to their striker 12 yards out and he made no mistake.  We responded with a corner, Corey Thomas shot but the keeper saved, within seconds we were again closing in on the keeper but he again came out on top making a second save.

On the half hour a left wing cross was headed just over the bar by Ceri Cook and 5 minutes later Rory saved a one on one to deny Merthyr a second goal.  We went two down in the early part of the second half, we gave the ball away in midfield and they went past a couple of poor challenges to give Rory no chance in goal.

We had a free kick in a good position but the cross was cleared to Tom Darlington but his shot was blocked and cleared.  On the hour we went three down again their forwards beat off a couple of weak challenges to score with ease.

We weren't attacking with any authority one of the few chances we had was a Carl Payne shot that went wide.  We conceded a fourth from a corner when Rory made a save and the Merthyr lads reacted quicker than us to force the ball home.
