WELSH LEAGUE U19

AFAN LIDO 3-2 HAVERFORDWEST

By Peter Reynolds

When Carl Payne scored our third in the fiftieth minute it was game over, or it should have been but no-one told the visitors. They scored twice in a five minute spell and should have at least drawn the game while our lads went off the boil.

Our first meaningful attack resulted in a corner which went right across the face of the goal with no-one getting a touch and the ball was cleared. After 11 minutes the ref was injured and the senior assistant took over, the fact he was only 15 did worry us slightly but our fears were unfounded as he did extremely well in the circumstances. Neither side got on top in the early stages but we did get in a couple of shots that all flew over the bar.

On 25 minutes we took the lead when from a free kick 25 yards out in a central position the keeper fumbled the shot however we failed to score from the tap in and the ball went wide right. The ball was played in and we hit the post before Shaun Morgan finally turned the ball in. Two minutes later Nathan Hodgson from inside the six yard box hit the crossbar from a Corey Thomas cross. Just after the half hour Rory McCreesh dallied on the ball and was caught in possession inside our area luckily the visiting striker had pushed the ball wide and couldn't score from that position.

On 36 minutes we went two up when Nathan Hodgson headed in following a right wing thrown in and a header on to him. 5 minutes before the interval Antonio Facciuto received a long cross but only succeeded in guiding his first time effort wide of the far post. Corey Thomas had the first chance of the second half when a left wing cross was headed on to him but his header was straight at the keeper, however in the fiftieth minute we did increase our lead when an attack was only half cleared and Carl Payne picked up the ball just outside the area, he shot first time, the ball taking a deflection and wrong footing the keeper. Instead of this being the signal to dominate the game and improve our goal difference we seemed to switch off and allow Haverfordwest time and space to attack us.

They made it 3-1 in the sixty fifth minute when the defence stood and watched a long ball over the top, no-one chased back and the attacker had time to beat Rory in goal. 5 minutes later another ball over the top and another goal 3-2, it was game on but we didn't respond to this. On 76 minutes another ball over the top caught us out again but this time Rory saved it, two minutes later we attacked wide left through Ceri Cook but his shot from outside the box clipped the top of the crossbar. Dale Lambrick was booked with 10 minutes to go when he contested a hand ball decision against him. Luke Borrelli then received the ball wide right, made ground and crossed to Ceri Cook, his effort on goal was blocked but fell to Corey Thomas, his shot produced a fine save from the keeper to keep the visitors in touch. Haverfordwest then won a corner right side which was half cleared, Rory then saved a shot at the expense of another corner followed by yet another before we cleared to touch.

We weren't able to clear our lines and get the ball forward to a red jersey, this last 10 minutes was desperate defending. Haverfordwest had a further corner which Rory held under the crossbar before they twice should have at least equalised in the 88th and 91st minutes when despite being well placed they failed to hit the target. Thankfully the referee blew his whistle to give us a thoroughly undeserved three points, hopefully we will play better than this next week at Llanelli.
