WELSH LEAGUE U19

Goytre Utd 1-3 Afan Lido

By Peter Reynolds

Two second half goals ensured we completed a league double over Goytre United. Straight from the kick off we conceded a corner, the ball was played in and they hit the side netting with a first time shot. We then broke up another attack and played the ball forward but Joel Kabia was caught offside.

We should have taken the lead after 6 minutes when following a Remi Whitelock throw the ball was played into the area, their keeper didn't react and just when it seemed we would score a defender managed to clear the ball for a corner. On 11 minutes we again could have gone ahead following a flowing move involving several players Luke Borrelli crossed first time from the touchline to Steve Hughes but his first time shot was straight at the keeper. Joel Kabia then got on the end of a long ball out of defence and lobbed the keeper but the ball went the wrong side of the post.

On 13 minutes we could have been behind, a Goytre attack wasn't dealt with and a cross hit one of our defenders and Rory McCreesh reacted well to turn the ball behind for a corner. Goytre did take the lead on 21 minutes when they attacked quickly and the shot from outside the area gave McCreesh little chance. We should have equalised two minutes later when Luke Borrelli took a quick throw in and found Joel Kabia, he made ground into the box but shot at the keeper, the ball rebounded to Steve Hughes and again he shot at the keeper. Luke Borrelli won the ball just outside the area beat a couple of players and with only the keeper to beat shot wide. A minute later the goal our pressure deserved duly arrived.

We were awarded a free kick in the centre circle, Corey Thomas took it quickly and found Joel Kabia, again he shot at the keeper but this time Steve Hughes netted the rebound. From the kick off in the second half we were awarded a free kick but Damon Thomas shot straight at the keeper. On 50 minutes a Remi Whitelock free kick was cleared to Carl Payne but his shot lacked any power and failed to trouble the keeper. On 52 minutes we took the lead, Corey Thomas won the ball in our half and found Damon Thomas, he played the ball in behind the defence for Joel Kabia to hit it first time from just inside the area, his shot flew past the keeper giving him no chance. Straight from the restart we attacked again but Damon Thomas shot wide from a good position. Damon then found Carl Payne wide right, he crossed into the area but a defender just got ahead of Corey Thomas and turned the ball behind for a corner.

On 58 minutes we had a free kick wide left, Remi Whitelock put the ball on a sixpence but from a good position we managed to head the ball wide. The third goal which would wrap up the game arrived on 68 minutes, we won a throw 15 yards from the byeline, Remi Whitelock found Joel Kabia who passed to Steve Hughes, the ball went across the area to the unmarked Luke Borrelli just beyond the far post, he shot first time to score with ease. Rory McCreesh cleared the ball out to Remi Whitelock who made ground down the left and passed inside to Carl Payne. Carl made ground and passed just ahead of Joel Kabia who had to hit it first time and shot into the side netting. We played out the final minutes without too many problems, this was one of our better performances with us playing a lot of good football.
