AFAN LIDO 6-1 BRITON FERRY
By Peter Reynolds
The youth kicked
off their season with a comprehensive win over local rivals
Briton Ferry.
The Ferry started the better earning an early corner before a
through ball
saw a Corey Thomas shot saved by the keeper.
On 10
minutes Damon Thomas
beat a couple of players before getting into the area where a last
ditch
tackle saw the defender clear to touch. A minute later
Remi Whitelock took
a corner which Sean Morgan headed over from a good position.
We
finally
made the breakthrough on 20 minutes when from a left wing free kick
Steve
Hughes headed in at the far post. We continued to attack
but couldn't put
the keeper under pressure then from a rare Ferry attack they split
our
defence but Luke Evans read the situation well covered back and
cleared the
danger.
With two minutes of the half remaining we doubled
our lead, a cross
from the right eluded everyone but Corey Thomas who was at the far
post and
he drilled home with his right foot giving the keeper no chance.
We kicked off the second half and found Luke Borrelli who did well
to get to
the byeline but his cross was just behind Remi Whitelock and the
ball was
cleared. Remi wasn't to be denied however and 5 minutes
later a free kick
found Sean Morgan in space but he miscued his shot which went
straight to
Remi who sidefooted the third in off the keeper.
On 55
minutes we had a
series of corners with Carl Payne having a couple of efforts blocked
on the
line. Three minutes later we went 4-0 up when the keeper
spilled the ball,
Luke Borrelli and Ceri Cooke competed for the chance with Luke
claiming the
goal After 71 minutes the Ferry reduced the arrears when
their striker
evaded a couple of challenges, went around Rory McCreesh and scored.
Any
thoughts of a recovery were dashed three minutes later when Ceri
Cooke
bustled his way through and won the ball laid it back to Remi
Whitelock some
35 yards out. Remi hit a left foot screamer which flew
into the net giving
the keeper no chance.
From the restart we won a corner
which Remi played
into the near post, Ceri Cooke headed across goal and just wide of
the far
post. We rounded things off with 4 minutes to go when
Corey Thomas made
ground into the area and squared the ball for Carl Payne to score.
