BRITON FERRY 1-3 AFAN LIDO
By Peter Reynolds
Torrential rain for three quarters
of the game didn't stop both sides
contributing to an entertaining game of football sensibly refereed
by Keith Wilkshire.
We were missing several players through injury and
suspension.
Briton Ferry had the earliest chance when they won a corner after 5
minutes
but the shot went over the bar. Our first opportunity was
after 13 minutes
but Remi Whitelock's free kick from 25 yards was well wide of the
target. A
couple of minutes later a left wing cross was dropped by the Ferry
keeper
and fell to Nathan Hodgson but his first time shot was blocked and
cleared.
Both sides were defying the conditions and producing some good
football and
on twenty minutes a Ferry throw into the box was pounced on and a
shot
produced a diving save from Rory McCreesh at the expense of an
unproductive
corner.
On 23 minutes Ferry had another corner as a result of
a perfectly
timed tackle in the box by Matthew Beynon. We cleared the
corner went down
the other end with several players involved before the ball reached
Nathan
Hodgson who coolly fired home from ten yards to give us the lead.
Just
before half time we played Remi Whitlock in but unfortunately he had
strayed
offside and the chance was lost. We won the ball back from the
free kick
and Nathan Hodgson was unlucky when the keeper again made a good
save.
The Ferry came out looking for the equaliser and had both a free
kick and a
corner in the first minutes of the half. The Nathan Hodgson -
Ferry keeper
contest was again won by the keeper when he turned another Nathan
shot
around for a corner which Tony Davies headed over from inside the
six yard
box.
We took control of the game and another corner was
cleared to Umberto
Brassiello who laid it off for Steve Hughes but his volley just
skimmed the
crossbar. Just after the hour we scored our second and it came
out of
nothing. A Ferry defender had the ball just inside their area,
Umberto
Brassiello tackled him and won the ball, he made ground and as the
keeper
came out he coolly slotted it past him. Shaun Morgan replaced
Tom
Darlington and he scored the third after 73 minutes when he hit a
loose ball
from the edge of the area giving the Ferry keeper no chance.
Josh Cockings
then replaced Sam Nolan who in a rare start played very well.
Jay Evans
replaced Tony Davies on 81 minutes and two minutes later the Ferry
scored
their only goal giving Rory no chance.
In the closing minutes
the Ferry
keeper twice came out on top in his duel with Nathan Hodgson making
two good
saves before Rory McCreesh made an excellent save right on the
whistle.
