AFAN LIDO 0-1 CARMARTHEN TOWN
By Peter Reynolds
Before the game
both sides boasted a 100% record in this early stage of the
season. But it's Carmarthen who continue theirs while we
need to reflect on
a generally lacklustre performance.
Despite that we still
had chances to
get something out of the game but our shooting was mainly high wide
and not
very handsome.
Carmarthen seized the early initiative and had a corner after only
20
seconds. We went down the other end and Steve Hughes
fired over the bar
from a good position. After 10 minutes Remi Whitelock
took a free kick from
just outside the area and so wide was the kick that it didn't enter
the goal
area. After 20 minutes Rory McCreesh made a diving save
to his right from a
free kick from just outside the area. The resultant
corner was cleared off
the line, none of our defenders claimed the cross allowing an
attempt at
goal by the visitors.
Both Damon and Corey Thomas then
had shots that
sailed over the bar before Carl Payne played the ball wide to Luke
Borrelli
who cut inside and shot. The keeper saved it at the
expense of an
unproductive corner. Just before half time a Damon Thomas
shot was saved at
the second attempt by the keeper with no-one following up to
challenge.
On 49 minutes the visitors thought they had scored, the assistant
referee
flagged for offside but play continued for some time and they put
the ball
in the net. Luckily for us the assistant kept his flag up
and the 'goal'
was disallowed much to Carmarthen's disgust but they hadn't seen the
assistant flagging. We almost took the lead after 52
minutes, firstly a
Luke Borrelli cross was just ahead of Corey Thomas, the ball was
half
cleared and Carl Payne shot from 30 yards, the keeper just got
enough of a
touch to divert the shot onto the crossbar.
Just after
our best spell
Carmarthen scored, again we failed to clear properly and the ball
went wide
left of our area. The striker's shot across the goal into
the far corner
had too much power for Rory McCreesh to save.
With a
quarter of an hour to
go Luke Borrelli found Antonio Facciuto and his cross found Nathan
Hodgson
in front of goal sadly he turned his shot wide from a good position. Luke
Borrelli tried his luck from 25 yards but again the keeper saved
then with 5
minutes to go Damon Thomas shot from all of 35 yards the ball
beating the
keeper but going just wide of the right hand upright. Just
before the end
the keeper dropped a cross and Matthew Beynon instinctively stuck
out a leg
but once again the ball cleared the crossbar.
On another
night it might
have been us carry forward our unbeaten record but despite the
chances
missed the general consensus was that we failed to turn up tonight. We
weren't as sharp as we should have been and we paid the price.
