AFAN LIDO
8-2 CAMBRIAN & CLYDACH
By Peter Reynolds
At last the 19's have found the goal trail and
progress through to Round 3
of the FAW Welsh Youth Cup after a comfortable win over 11 man Cambrian who
paid the penalty for not having any subs with them. Steve Davies was
available and played in midfield.
After 5 minutes our first meaningful attack saw Corey Thomas feed Steve
Davies who played it wide to Luke Borrelli whose first time cross found
Nathan Hodgson, he shot across the goal but just in front on two onrushing
forwards and the chance was lost.
Cambrian had a free kick on the edge of
the box but they shot straight at Rory McCreesh in goal. On 13 minutes we
had the breakthrough, Luke Borrelli found Steve Davies who played it wide to
Nathan Hodgson and his first time cross was nodded in from 6 yards by Ceri
Cook, it was a move that deserved a goal. On 15 minutes the Cambrian
keeper
miskicked a goal kick which went straight to Ceri Cook, he knocked it wide
left to Remi Whitelock who shot across the keeper who made a good diving
save to his left.
After 20 minutes a Rory McCreesh kick out beat the
defender, Ceri Cook raced on to it but dragged his shot just wide. Four
minutes later it was 2-0, the ball was played wide to Luke Borrelli, his
cross found Nathan Hodgson who controlled the ball instantly with his left
foot and fired home with his right for another quality goal. Steve
Davies
was enjoying himself in midfield spraying passes all around but on the half
hour he picked the ball up in midfield and ran forward 30 yards before
shooting just wide from the edge of the area.
It wasn't long however
before
it was 3-0 when Steve again picked up the ball in midfield and played it
wide right to Luke Borrelli and his first time cross beat the keeper for
Nathan Hodgson to tap in from 6 yards. Just before half time Cambrian had
a
lifeline, Matthew Beynon was booked for a foul just outside the area and
they scored directly from the free kick giving Rory McCreesh little chance.
Going in 3-1 at half time we knew that for the early part of the second half
Cambrian would give it a go and for the first few minutes they held the
upper hand before Steve Davies played the ball wide to Luke Borrelli but
this time the keeper cut out the cross. Carl Payne lost the ball near the
half way and left us exposed at the back but luckily the shot lacked power
and was straight at Rory in goal. We then had a free kick 40 yards out
which Steve Davies took and found Nathan Hodgson in space but he headed
wide. Just before the hour mark we went 4-1 up Remi Whitelock took a
corner
which Cambrian failed to clear and as the ball bobbled around in the 6 yard
box, Ceri Cook controlled it and fired home for his second.
Steve Hughes
came on in place of Steve Davies and within 2 minutes he played an inch
perfect pass from wide left which Ceri Cook took on his chest and before the
keeper could react nodded it over him for his hat trick. Tom Darlington
replaced Darren Franks on 68 minutes and within 3 minutes he chipped the
keeper from the edge of the box to make it 6-1. 10 minutes from time Corey
Thomas received the ball from Tom Darlington and fired in a powerful shot
which the keeper did well to tip over for a corner. The ensuing corner was
cleared but not to be outdone the same combination made it 7-1 when Tom
again fed Corey and this time he made no mistake from just inside the area.
Disappointingly inside the last 10 minutes we conceded a second goal
although by now we didn't have a central defender on the field as they'd
both been substituted.
With 4 minutes to go Carl Payne made it 8-2, he
made
ground and shot, the ball going for a corner, Ceri Cook took it and found
Nathan Hodgson who headed it back to Ceri. He crossed again and found Carl
in acres of room for a simple tap in to round off an excellent performance
