WELSH LEAGUE U19

Bryntirion 1-1 Afan Lido

By Peter Reynolds

In a reverse of the first team game on Tuesday we scored in the 91st minute to go above Carmarthen into second place in the table, only West End can now overtake us. Of the seven who started for the firsts on Tuesday four started in this match, disappointingly Shaun Morgan had two yellow cards and now misses the firsts match on Saturday against Bridgend. We could have gone have gone behind after four minutes following some indecision between Shaun Morgan and Rory McCreesh which allowed a striker to get between them however he shot straight at Rory who made a comfortable save.

Three minutes later Bryntirion had a free kick 25 yards out and with the ball heading for the top corner Rory made an excellent save tipping the ball over for a corner. Damon Thomas then played the ball out to Tom Darlington who made ground down the left and crossed in to Umberto Brassiello but his first time shot was held by the keeper low to his left. Steve Hughes played a crossfield pass to Umberto who went down the right but his cross drifted behind for a goal kick. Bryntirion won a corner on their right which we cleared to Joel Kabia he crossed and found Tom Darlington on the edge of the area but he shot over the bar. Again Rory McCreesh made a critical save on 37 minutes when the Bryntirion wide man went past Darren Franks before crossing, again Rory went high to his left to turn the goalbound shot over for a corner. Just afterwards we went behind, the back four stood appealing for offside but Darren Franks hadn't moved out and played the striker onside he made ground and scored with ease.

We responded with Damon Thomas playing the ball out to Luke Borrelli, he had 3 defenders around him but won a throw. The ball reached Tom Darlington and he crossed but behind the onrushing Matthew Beynon and the chance was lost. We should have equalised after 58 minutes when a through ball reached Umberto Brassiello behind the back four, he rounded the keeper but shot wide of an unguarded goal. We had a free kick in a central position just outside the area but Damon Thomas shot wide. We continued to press forward in search of an equaliser and Tom Darlington crossed into the box for Joel Kabia but he was stretching for the ball and shot over the bar. Minutes later Shaun Morgan headed a corner over the bar and despite creating these chances it looked as if the goal wouldn't come. To make it worse Shaun Morgan was booked on 77 minutes for taking a player out on the half way and with 7 minutes to go he had a second card for dissent. Just when it looked as if we wouldn't score the goal came, we were awarded a free kick just inside the Bryntirion half near the touchline, Rory McCreesh knocked the ball into the area and from the ensuing scramble we scored. It was impossible to see who scored but in the dressing room afterwards Umberto claimed the goal. There was still time for Bryntirion to attack and be awarded a free kick in a dangerous position but we cleared the ball and the final whistle sounded.
