At last the reserves
have begun their season after their opening fixture
with Bridgend was called off when they withdrew from the league. It now
appears that the Central Division will continue with Cardiff Corries being
introduced into the section.
Porthcawl had the better of the opening exchanges on a glorious afternoon
with no wind, a rarity at Locks Lane. Our first chance fell to the
returning John Felton playing his first game of the season. Corey Thomas had
received a long ball from defence and crossed for John but unfortunately it
was just behind him and the chance was lost. However on 10 minutes we took
the lead, again Corey was in space, this time on our right, he drew two
defenders and crossed to John Felton, he cut inside the defender and his
left footed shot flew past the keeper with a aid of a deflection. Adam
Beynon lost the ball in midfield but the Porthcawl shot was straight at Wyn
Walters in goal.
On 26 minutes Porthcawl should have equalised when they
played the ball wide left, the winger cut inside but shot wide of the far
post. They were made to pay for that miss when Shaun Best got into the
Porthcawl area but lost the ball, it fell kindly to John Felton who fired
high into the net from 15 yards. 5 minutes later it was 3-0 when Corey
Thomas played the ball wide to John Felton, he hit it hard and low across
the keeper who fumbled it allowing Shaun Best to score from almost on the
line.
On 35 minutes Corey Thomas made it 4-0 when he picked up a loose ball
25 yards out, cut inside and shot, again the ball took a deflection giving
the keeper no chance. It was 5-0 on 43 minutes when for the umpteenth time
Corey Thomas picked up the ball in midfield, he fed Shaun Best who drew the
keeper and put it wide of him into the net.
Porthcawl reduced the arrears on 50 minutes when after one of our attacks
broke down we were sadly lacking in defence and their four attackers were
too much for our one defender. John Felton was twice unlucky when Shaun
Best played him into the area but the keeper made a good block then Andrew
Wright crossed just behind John whose bicycle kick effort was equally
brilliantly saved by the keeper at the expense of a corner.
From the corner
a Luke Borelli shot appeared to be handled on the line but the ball came
back out to John Felton who buried number 6. On the hour Shaun Best picked
up a throw got to the byeline but his cross was too high for Luke Borelli
with the goal gaping. Again Luke did well to beat a couple of defenders, he
got in his shot which went just over the crossbar for yet another corner. Wyn Walters made a good save on 72 minutes when Porthcawl made ground down
their left and he was forced to turn the shot behind for a corner.
With 11
minutes to go we made it 7-1 when a corner was partially cleared we played
it in to Matthew Beynon who drew the keeper and slotted past him into the
far corner. On 89 minutes we were awarded a penalty Craig Martin netted to
the keepers left. To round off a disappointing afternoon for Porthcawl they
then had a player sent off for fouling Shaun Best just outside the area.
