19's secure victory over West End |
|
It was 2nd versus 3rd
when the Lido took on West End in Mayhill today.
And it was the Lido
that won the day, with their 12th league win of the season, and have
now created a 9 point lead over West End in 3rd, though they do have 5
games in hand.
Our scorers were
Steve Hughes & Joel Kabia.
This was 16 year old
striker Joel Kabia's first game and goal for Lido. Joel was sighed
last week following his release by Swansea City. Joel's dad Jimmy was
a former striker and played in the football league and played
for Boston in the conference league.

ENTO
Aberaman match preview |
|
The race for league
honours seems to be hotting up, with the closest race for years as at
least 6 teams have a realistic chance for the title and runners up
spot.
Ton Pentre looked to
have all but sealed top spot, but following 2 home defeats on the trot
against Dinas Powys and Bryntirion, the race is now opened up again,
with Goytre now just 2 points behind the Bulldogs and with a game in
hand.
Our next
opponents this Saturday ENTO Aberaman have been on the back of a good
run, but they slipped up to the improving Caldicot Town last time out
losing 3-1. Following Bryntirion's
4-1 win at Ynys Park they have pushed us down to 4th level on points
with us, but they do have a game in hand.
Our poor 2nd half
performance at home to ENTO back in January when they scored 4 2nd
half goals was the last time we tasted defeat and the last time we
have conceded more than 1 goal in a game, our defence is now settled
under the new gaffers and we have kept 7 clean sheets in the 11 games
since the ENTO defeat.
We have a small squad
these days following several players leaving, but there is quality
throughout the squad, as has been seen with a few injuries and players
unavailable due to work commitments, the players that have come in
have all contributed to our 11 game unbeaten run.
Saturday will be a
good test of how far the team has come since the ENTO defeat as most
of our games since then have been against teams in the mid and lower
reaches of the league, we defend our unbeaten away record on Saturday
and can boast just 2 league defeats all season the next best is Ton
Pentre with 4 losses, but our lack turning chances into of goals has
seen us draw 9 of our 24 games, and is the reason we lie in 4th place
and not 1st.
So hopefully our
strikers and midfielders will have their shooting boots on against
ENTO and keep us in the hunt for promotion.

All
square @ the Marston |
|
Tonight's game against Cambrian
& Clydach ended in a goalless draw and from reports at the game,
the game was spoilt by the referee. Our lead at the top improves to 3
points over 3rd placed Bryntirion, (and our unbeaten run extends to 11
games) but they now have 2 games in hand.
We have to hope the
top teams take points off each other tomorrow to make up for our draw
tonight, as Bryntirion host 5th placed ENTO Aberaman, and table
toppers Ton Pentre host 6th placed Dinas Powys, while 4th placed
Goytre Utd are away to mid table Bridgend.
Our next 5 games will
make or break our promotion hopes as we face ENTO Aberaman (A), Dinas
Powys (H), Newport YMCA (A), Goytre United (A), Bryntirion Athletic
(A).
More on tonight's
game tomorrow.

Pontypridd
match preview |
|
Tonight we take on
Pontypridd Town at the Marston. Pontypridd are struggling in the
relegation places. A far cry from the team that was pushing for
promotion to the Welsh Premier league less than 12 months ago. But the
withdrawal of their major backer and the £30,000 that came with them
has seen their fortunes take a massive nose dive in the table, To
quote last seasons results would be meaningless as their team does not
resemble that of last seasons (come to think of it neither does ours)
Pontypridd's recent
form is nothing to write home about, apart from their last game a win
against rock bottom Garw 7-1 you have to go back 10 games to their
last win in the league, and they have only taken 1 point from their
last 9 games (prior to the Garw victory) and one of those defeats was
at home to us when we won 3-0.
So on paper it should
be a comfortable win and 3 points for Lido, but putting the ball in
the back of the net has been our biggest downfall this season. Take
away our 11-0 win over Garw we have only scored 29 goals in 21 games,
and we could be well clear in 2nd place had we found the net a little
more frequently.
To show our lack of
goals you only have to look at who are the top scorers for Lido in the
league this season, our 2 top scores have both left the club, Mark
Jones tops the table with 6 and Andy Pearson is 2nd with 5, and they only
played 14 games between them, and our use of players also has a
bearing, in total we have used 39 players in all 22 league games. (me
thinks only Cwmbran have used more players) But of late we have
fielded a familiar and more settled line up under the new gaffers and
this is now starting to reap rewards on the pitch.
By the time I come
back from Edinburgh This Friday we could/should be 5 points clear in
2nd place with 2 home wins over Ponty and Cambrian & Clydach and
their is also a chance our near rivals will do us a few favours as
well, as on Saturday Bryntirion host Aberaman, and Ton Pentre host
Dinas Powys and Goytre face a tough test away to Bridgend.
Good luck to the team
& gaffers in both home games and hopefully our recent excellent
form will continue, I look forward to Alan's frequent goals updates
tonight as long as they are for the right team as I munch my way
through the copious amounts of pork scratching's I intend to consume
;)

A good
day for Lido & we didn't kick a ball |
|
Afan Lido can be pleased
with today's division one results even though we never kicked a ball.
Two of our closest rivals for a top two spot both lost, Dinas Powys
for the second home game on the trot were beaten, today by Caerleon
who have the best away record in the league with eight wins &
three draws from their twelve away games (just as well for the rest of
the teams their home is so poor) Caerleon came away with a 2-1 win,
their sixth away game without defeat.
The other excellent
result for Lido was at Aberaman Park where Newport YMCA were the
visitors, and YM have finally brushed away their welsh cup hangover,
and in doing so inflicted only ENTO's third home defeat of the season
with the final scoreline being 3-1 to the Gwent side.
Their was only one
other game played today when Croesyceiliog beat bottom club Garw 5-1
to move four points clear of the drop zone, so a good day for the
three Gwent sides playing all registering wins.
Tuesday Night we play
Pontypridd Town at the Marston and a win will see us move into second
place in the table and two points clear of current second placed
Bryntirion. We need to make the most of our next three home games
(Pontypridd, Camb & Clydach & Dinas Powys) as we have to play
seven away games in the next ten, and some very tough games against
the teams around us in the table. Which include trips to ENTO
Aberaman, Newport YMCA, Goytre and Bryntirion.

Youth's
draw with West End |
|
Our youth's entertained
Swansea side West End last night at the Marston, and they finished the
game all square in a 2-2 draw.
It was just our 2nd
draw of the season, and consolidates our 2nd place in the table. The
point for West End see's them leap frog Carmarthen into 3rd place.
West End lie 6 points
behind us but they do have 5 games in hand and are a major threat to
overtaking us for that 2nd spot, Llanelli still top the division with
36 points from 12 games and look uncatchable.
More details to
follow.

Cwmbran
game updates |
|
Afan Lido end the first
half 1 goal up against Cwmbran Town.
The games only goal
so far came from Steve Cox, Coxy put us in front in he 40th minute,
and the lead could have been bigger, as Cwmbran twice cleared off
their goal line.
Those 2 misses look
like coming back to haunt us as Cwmbran level things up on 82 minutes,
score 1-1.
Final score 1-1. Once
again lack of goals was our undoing, 9 games unbeaten but 2 points
lost today.
With all the results
in we are now down to 4th following Bryntirion's 3-2 home win over
Goytre, and it's mighty tight at the top with just 2 points separating
2nd placed Bryntirion & 6th place Dinas Powys. But top place looks
the sole possession of Ton Pentre who are now 7 points clear following
their 6-1 home win over Croesyceiliog.

to Merthyr Tydfil for a youth league clash, it was 4th against 2nd,
and despite Merthyr's close 3-2 victory neither side moved in the
table.

youths is another tough game when West End are the visitors to the
Marston, The Townhill side lie in 5th place with only 2 defeats in the
league and many games in hand on all the teams above them.

Live updates
on tonight's game |
|
With just 6 minutes
played on the clock Lido take the lead with a goal from Steve Cox his
2nd league goal of the season.
No more goals in the
1st 45.
An uneventful 2nd
half with no goals, which means a 1-0 win for Lido and 3 points, which
see us move up to 3rd in the table. Our unbeaten run stretches back 8
games with 7 wins and a draw, and 5 clean sheets in the last 8 games.
The squads response since that 4-1 home defeat to ENTO Aberaman 8
games ago has seen the team climb the league to the verge of the
promotion places.

home games, the first next Saturday against Cwmbran Town.
Squad:
L Cosker - R McCreesh - J Williams - S Parry - S Morgan - S Cox - D Williams

Team
news for the YM game tonight |
|
We have a full squad to
choose from for tonight's game (except Dan McGrath - out for 3 more
weeks)
Back for tonight's
game are Captain Karl and Shaun Best.
YM are flying on all
fronts, with their memorable welsh cup quarter final win last Saturday
against Welshpool. Their league form is only bettered by ourselves and
Ton Pentre. They have suffered just one defeat in their last ten
league games (2-1 loss away to Dinas Powys) and they have faired well
against the top sides, with a 3-2 win over Camb & Clydach and
draws against Ton Pentre and ENTO Aberaman.
So it's going to be a
tough game for Lido, but a win tonight will see us jump to 3rd in the
table, a point off 2nd placed Goytre and 6 points adrift of table
toppers Ton Pentre.
Last seasons result
would be welcome tonight, as we ran out 5-2 victors with goals from I
Jones (2) J Felton, C Jones, C Evans.
A good turn out
tonight in the stands would give the players a lift so forget the
champions league and make ur way to the Marston and cheer on the team.
Squad:
L Cosker - R McCreesh - J Williams - S Parry - S Morgan - S Cox - D Williams
- S Davies - K Lewis
M Waters -
K Howells - D Thomas - K Roberts - S Best - Ianto - C Thomas.

Lido's
unbeaten away record continues |
|
Afan Lido took another
step closer to catching the top 5 teams with a hard fought 1-0 win
away at Dinas Powys Murch Ground.
In the first half we had
the strong breeze in our favour, but the half time whistle ended all
square.
And the 90 minutes
ended all square at 0-0, but 2 minutes into injury time Kieran Howells
got the Lido winner, and time ran out for for the home side.
We continue our
unbeaten away games record into March and march on up the table as
well.

Lido
squad for the Dinas Powys game |
|
Following our recent
good run in the league with 5 wins and a draw in our last 6 games, it
has given us a chance to catch up to the teams above, and still a very
remote chance of a top 2 finish, but victory over Dinas is a must to
keep that slim chance alive.
We are the only team in
the division that can still boast and unbeaten away record, but 5 of
our 8 games have finished in draws, but we have won those last 3 games
on the trot after 5 away draws. And we have conceded just 3 away goals
in those 8 games.
Dinas have a good home
record of 7 wins 1 draw and 1 defeat in their 9 home games. Their only
home defeat came at the hands of Goytre Utd 3-2 back in late
September. Dinas are enjoying their best season in the welsh league in
4th but have games in hand of the next 2 teams above, it's going to be
a tough test today, but not an impossible one.
Squad:
L Cosker - R McCreesh - J Williams - S Parry - S Morgan - S Cox - D Williams
- S Davies - M Waters
K Howells - D Thomas - K Roberts - L Borrelli - Ianto - C Thomas.
Out of the squad is Dan
McGrath
who was injured in
training, Dan tore a hamstring and could be out for two weeks.
