The season ended at Newport on
Saturday with a 0-3 defeat but with a number
of senior players unavailable it can be put down to another stage in the
experience of the younger players. We were unable to cope with the height
of the YM's strikers and it caused us problems throughout the match.
We went behind in 8 minutes when a long diagonal ball to the YM right found
their 7 Junior Borg unmarked almost on the edge of our area. He steadied
himself and with no challenge shot across Rory McCreesh and just inside the
far post. YM continued to dictate matters and could have gone two up after
13 minutes but headed over from a corner when really they should have
scored.
After 15 minutes we caught out the YM at the back but the linesman
flagged for offside when Remi Whitelock was running through from an onside
position. In this move Dan McGrath was injured with a repeat of his
hamstring injury and he was replaced by Steve Hughes. We went two down
after 22 minutes when following a left sided corner Lewis Sommers at 6' 5''
plus headed in unopposed.
Our inexperienced was showing as we persisted in
hitting high balls forward to Shaun Best who had no chance against another 6
foot plus in the back. Just after the half hour YM hit the post and Lewis
Sommers managed to hit the rebound over the bar from inside the six yard
box. We were awarded a free kick which Dan Williams knocked into the box
but someone breathed on the keeper and YM were awarded a free kick.
Early in the second half Rory McCreesh held a cross and rolled the ball out
but it was intercepted by Sommers who again managed to shoot wide. Our day
was summed up when Carl Payne won the ball and passed to Michael Waters who
made ground and shot from the edge of the area and nearly hit the corner
flag. YM attacked again and were helped when Dan Williams slipped, Rory
Made an excellent save tipping the shot over for a corner which Matt Beynon
cleared. We went down the other end Steve Davies knocked the ball wide to
Steve Hughes who won a corner, from point blank range Shaun Best hit the
keeper the ball was cleared and Rory McCreesh made another excellent save.
It looked as if we'd keep the score to 2-0 but with 15 minutes to go Carl
Payne played a square ball straight to Junior Borg who ran forward to score
his second of the match.
