We moved into second place as a result of this win but we could have at
least doubled our score if even half the chances on offer were taken.
We had our first chance after 5 minutes when Leon Cosker's kick was headed
on by Ian Jones to Michael Waters, the chance opened up for Michael but he
cut back onto his left foot and was then crowded out. Steve Davies picked
up the loose ball, beat his defender and crossed, the ref gave a goal kick
deciding the ball had come off Steve Cox rather than the defender.
On 9
minutes Dan Williams fed Steve Davies who beat a couple of defenders and won
a corner. Michael Waters played it in to the near post where Ian Jones got
in a header but put it wide. Both sides at this point were playing at 100
miles an hour with no-one putting their foot on the ball. To his credit
Kieran Howells was picking up a lot in midfield and it was he who gave us
the lead on 18 minutes. We again won a corner right side, Michael Waters
swung it over beyond the far post, Karl Lewis headed at goal and Kieran
reacted quickest to nod it past the keeper from a couple of yards for his
fourth goal of the season. Both Karl Roberts and Dan Williams lost
possession in our half but Pontypridd
failed to take advantage either time.
On 24 minutes we had the cushion of a second goal and again it came from a
corner. Steve Davies took it from the left side and swung it into the six
yard box where both Karl Lewis and Corey Thomas competed for the header
which Corey won for his fourth goal of the season. We now started to knock
the ball around making the Pontypridd
defence work overtime and 10 minutes
before half time it should have been 3-0, from a free kick on the half way
Steve Cox played it on to Ian Jones who shot to the keepers right but he
dived and knocked the ball away for a corner.
5 minutes before the break a
through ball found Steve Cox but he shot wide from just inside the area.
Steve Davies won the ball and crossed to Ian Jones his first time shot was
blocked by the keeper and went back to Steve, he crossed and with Ian
waiting to pounce a defender just got a head to it to clear.
Early in the second half we had a series of corners, the keeper finally
punching the ball clear but straight to Karl Roberts thirty yards out.
Karl
steadied himself to shoot but the onrushing defenders blocked his shot and
Pontypridd
broke with a four to one advantage. Karl got back and managed to
knock the ball out for a throw in but once again we could have been caught
out and allowed Pontypridd
back into the match. Just before the hour mark
we had a free kick on the half way Dan Williams found Karl Lewis who headed
it to Michael Waters, Michael's cross found Ian Jones a couple of yards out
but he shot straight at the keeper.
5 minutes later Michael Waters again
played Ian in, this time he chipped the keeper but missed the target.
Kieran Howells played a great ball through for Shaun Best who won a corner,
again the ball was knocked behind for a second corner which under pressure
the defence cleared. With just over a quarter of an hour to go we sealed
the three points, Corey Thomas beat the offside trap and squared the ball to
Ian Jones, the keeper had failed to cut out the cross so Ian had the simple
task of knocking the ball into the empty net. 9 minutes from time we were
awarded a penalty when Ian was brought down in the area, Leon Cosker took it
and planted it into the net. There was still time for a couple of chances
to be missed against what was now a bedraggled Pontypridd
defence.
