| This
was two points dropped against a Maesteg side still being put
together. The first 30 minutes against Garw came back to haunt us
and lasted the whole 90, chance after chance went begging with
no-one clinical enough to score. We started the game slowly and
allowed Maesteg an easy 5 minutes to get themselves into the game.
Our first attack of
note was a Steve Davies run down the right but his cross, not for
the only time was blocked. We were awarded a free kick 30 yards out
but Tomas Wellington hit the wall with the ball going for a
corner. Steve Parry's corner was dropped by the keeper, another
feature of the game, but we were second to the ball and it was
cleared. On 6 minutes we had another corner but Mark Jones headed
over, 4 minutes later Maesteg had their best chance of the game when
a ball out to their left was knocked back into the box and was
cleared for a corner. On 14 minutes Steve Parry took another corner
which beat everyone in the area except Mark Jones but he was unable
to score from inside the 6 yard box. When the corner was taken
Justin Williams went to the near post and in his efforts to head the
ball collided with the post, it survived the ordeal, Justin had to
have treatment.
Over the next
twenty minutes we had a succession of corners or shots that were
either saved or went over the bar. On 35 minutes in a scramble Chris
Latham hit the crossbar with Mark Jones unable to force home the
rebound. Just before half time we had a corner on the left it hit 2
Maesteg players with the keeper clawing the ball from the goal in a
desperate attempt to keep it out. At half time we replaced Andrew
Wright with Kieran Howells making his debut at his former club.
We had a better
start to the second half with a Chris Latham shot saved but not held
with the rebound being cleared before we could get there. On 52
minutes Mark Jones fed Steve Davies but his shot was saved, minutes
later Kieran Howells fed Chris Latham who found Steve Davies but he
failed to find the target when well placed. The story of our night
was summed up when Corey Thomas beat the offside trap raced into the
area and fed Mark Jones, his shot beat the keeper but cannoned back
off the post.
We continued to
have the majority of the game but our finishing was wasteful,
numerous efforts went high or wide. With 10 minutes to go following
a corner we had another effort cleared off the line and with a
minute to go a Carl Edwards cross was dropped by the keeper but
again there was no-one challenging. In the last minute Phil Holmes
challenged the keeper but the keeper won a goal kick by pushing the
ball against Phil to ensure a hard earned point for the home side.
