First half goals from Steve
Davies and Shaun Morgan meant a happy return to
Glenhafod Park for Craig and Dai.
We started brightly from the kick off with Corey Thomas feeding Damon Thomas
on to Michael Waters but his cross was cut out, Steve Davies won the ball
back and crossed but this time Chris Curtis held the cross. A second
minute
free kick some 35 yards out for a foul on Kieran Howells was played in by
Daniel Williams but it hit Steve Cox and was cleared. Steve Davies then
played the ball to Damon Thomas but it was slightly over hit, Goytre knocked
the ball forward to Richard Ryan in space but Leon Cosker dived to save his goal bound
shot. We could have been in front after 8 minutes when Damon
Thomas challenged Chris Curtis and won the ball but shot against him, the
ball rebounded to Damon and with the keeper out of position he shot over the
bar from just inside the box. Richard Ryan then netted but it was
disallowed for a foul, he was however proving difficult to handle and we
again allowed him acres of room to get his shot away. Again Leon Cosker
dived full length to save at the expense of a corner. It was end to end at
this point and Corey and Damon Thomas combined to give Steve Cox a shooting
opportunity from 30 yards which went just wide of the right hand post.
Steve Davies wasted a free kick in a favourable position by over hitting the
kick and the ball sailed harmlessly away for a goal kick. We took the lead
on 23 minutes, Damon Thomas won the ball but was fouled, Steve Davies took
the kick which went for a corner, Michael Waters corner was cleared to the
waiting Steve Davies some 30 yards out and he did exceptionally well to keep
his shot down and on target the ball hitting the inside of the post before
nestling in the back of the net. Kieran Howells then lost the ball in the
centre circle, the ball was played through and with the defence appealing
for offside Richard Ryan lobbed Leon Cosker from the edge of the area but
the ball also cleared the crossbar.
We went two up on 37 minutes and again
it followed a corner, Chris Curtis dropped Michael Waters cross and the
Goytre defence failed to clear their lines, the ball was knocked forward and
from 2 yards Shaun Morgan turned it in at the far post. Two minutes before
half time Richard Ryan was injured and after some minutes treatment on the
field was carried off. This led to a longer than usual first half but he
was ok to return just before the half time whistle which was after 50
minutes.
With Goytre two down we knew they would have to come at us if they were to
get back into the game and on 48 minutes Leon Cosker again tipped a Richard
Ryan shot over for a corner. We were awarded a free kick just in the
Goytre
half for a foul on Corey Thomas, Steve Parry played it short to Michael
Waters but the ball was cleared and Goytre then broke quickly, Daniel
Williams clearly won the ball with a clean tackle but the referee awarded a
free kick but Richard Ryan shot over the bar. Goytre were now being
awarded
several free kicks around the area, Johnny Walkley tried his luck but shot
wide. The inevitable goal came after 53 minutes when yet another free kick
was charged down but fell for Steve Conaty to shoot through a mass of
players into the net.
Goytre were more dangerous on the break and Steve
Conaty could have equalised after 65 minutes but shot wide when well placed.
Out of the blue a shot from wide left looked to be going in but somehow Leon
Cosker managed to dive high to his right to turn the ball behind for a
corner. A couple of miss kicks in our defence resulted in a second corner
which we headed behind for a third before we managed to clear our lines.
With just over a quarter of an hour to go Michael Waters played in Steve
Parry on the overlap, Steve made ground and his cross went across the face
of the goal and was picked up by Steve Davies on the right hand touchline.
He crossed in but no-one had gambled so the ball was cleared. Goytre were
awarded a free kick for a foul on Richard Ryan, again the ball was turned
behind for a corner which again became a series of three before we cleared
our lines. With 10 minutes to go a right wing cross found Corey Thomas
unmarked but from a good position he headed over the bar. Michael Waters
received the ball in space and took on his defender but shot wide when well
placed. The last 10 minutes was back to the wall stuff but the lads
defended well to ensure the three points were won.
