Garw Athletic 0-4 Afan Lido

With Karl Roberts and Steve Davies missing from Saturday Remi Whitelock and Carl Payne came in for their second starts in the Welsh League while Luke Borrelli made his first. Nathan Hodgson made a second appearance on the bench with Steve Hughes getting a first call up. While Garw made it difficult for us, they missed several reasonable attempts on goal they also seemed intent on getting someone sent off with several off the ball challenges which went unnoticed by the officials.

In the first half we were caught offside at least 9 times, 1 of them from a free kick which Dan Williams knocked 60 yards for Kieran Howells to head home, as he did so the flag went up but when you consider the distance the ball travelled it was probably a poor decision.

We took the lead on 6 minutes when Dan Williams knocked a ball over the Garw back four for Shaun Best to chase and with the keeper charging off his line Shaun knocked it over him and into the net from 25 yards. Garw almost equalised 2 minutes later when following a throw in a forward headed over Leon Cosker but he just managed to get a touch to it and knock it onto the crossbar and away for a corner. On the 15 minute mark Luke Borrelli found Shaun Best in space, his shot was turned behind for a corner. We then broke down the left, Michael Waters found Carl Payne who crossed to the far post but there was no-one there to turn in an easy chance.

We could have gone 2 up when a left wing cross was turned onto the crossbar by a defender from inside the 6 yard box. Just before the half hour another through ball found Shaun Best, he made ground into the box and went down but the ref waved on play. 10 minutes before the break we had a free kick on half way, the ball went through to the keeper who under no pressure dropped it but managed to recover before anyone could turn it in. We went 2 up on 43 minutes when Corey Thomas who had replaced Steve Cox passed to Shaun Best, he went past the keeper and his shot hit a defender before going into the net.

On 45 minutes Leon Cosker dropped the ball, Justin Williams in clearing only found a forward 25 yards out but with Leon still making it back to the goal the forward's shot went wide. In added on time we had the Kieran Howells disallowed goal. The first meaningful attack of the second half saw Shaun Best knock the ball wide to Corey Thomas, Corey crossed to Luke Borrelli 10 yards out Luke headed the ball goalwards but the keeper saved it. Shaun Best and Corey Thomas teamed up with Corey getting into the area he shot across the keeper but just wide of the far post.

On the hour Garw made their second attempt to give us a goal, Leon Cosker kicked the ball downfield and a defender headed the ball over the keeper as he came out but just wide of the post. Garw attacked and won a corner which a forward headed over the bar from 8 yards. This was another warning that a 2 goal lead might not be enough. Michael Waters then found Luke Borrelli who hit a diagonal ball to Carl Payne whose first time shot went just wide.

We netted the all important third goal on 74 minutes, Shaun Best wide left played the ball inside to Corey Thomas, Corey held the ball and played it across the area into the path of Carl Payne who shot first time and beat the keeper's despairing dive. Two minutes later Michael Waters went through and shot across goal but wide of the far post. Having got a three goal advantage we almost conceded when Remi Whitelock tried to head back to Leon Cosker but didn't get enough power on his header. A Garw forward shot but Cosker turned it wide for a corner. Shaun Best wrapped up the scoring after 88 minutes when he ran on to a through ball and as the keeper came out slotted it left foot past him into the net for his first senior hat trick.

Other than perhaps not scoring more, the one criticism we could have was that we were a bit sloppy at the back, perhaps because it was too easy but Dan Williams lost the ball in the final moments of the game and again Leon Cosker saved at the expense of a corner. Still job done, there were only three points on offer tonight whether it was 11-0 or 1-0 and with the number of youngsters being introduced it can only be good for our future.
