Despite Ian Jones missing a
penalty on the stroke of half time we won 2-1 to
keep up our challenge for the top spots.
There was a quiet opening to the game with neither side able to take
control. The nearest either side had to score in the first 20 minutes fell
to Caldicot, there was a mix up between Dan Williams and Leon Cosker and the
ball broke for the Caldicot striker but with an open goal he shot over from
the edge of the area. Kieran Howells was booked on 25 minutes for what
looked like a straight forward tackle, the ref took some time before showing
him the card.
We were struggling to put our game together and Caldicot won
couple of corners which we cleared. Then on 28 minutes Kieran Howells won
the ball in midfield and passed to Steve Davies who returned the ball to
Kieran who again fed Steve but his first time shot was straight at the
keeper. Three minutes later we took the lead, Justin Williams made ground
down the right and crossed in to Ian Jones, Ian controlled the ball and
turned to shoot low to the keeper's right to put us one up. This gave us
some impetus and we then forced a corner which was cleared but we then had a
free kick for a foul on Kieran Howells which was played in to Ian Jones
whose header was turned behind for a corner.
On 42 minutes we could have
gone two up, a cross from Corey Thomas caused some confusion between the
keeper and a defender, however Ian Jones hadn't followed up for what could
have been a tap in. Right on half time we should have been two up, we were
awarded a penalty when Steve Davies was brought down in the box, Ian Jones
took the penalty, the keeper guessed right and made an easy save.
In the second minute of the second half we had a free kick 40 yards out, Dan
Williams played it in to Ian Jones but the ball was cleared, we played it
back in to Corey Thomas but it was blocked and cleared as he tried to bring
it under control. Caldicot defensively were struggling but we weren't
putting them under pressure so they had time to clear the ball. As the
other night we weren't holding the ball up front so it was coming straight
back at the defence. #
However on 66 minutes we went two up, Steve Parry
made
ground down the left and passed to Ian Jones who flicked it on into Kieran
Howells path. Kieran left side of goal with a narrow angle scored with his
left foot the ball ending just inside the far post. That should have been
game over but with thirteen minutes to go Steve Parry under no pressure
failed to control the ball. Gareth Cullimore picked the ball up thirty
yards out with no-one ahead of him. He drew Cosker and fired home from the
edge of the area. Heartened by this Caldicot pressed forward and with 8
minutes to go a cross come shot landed on the top of the net. They pressed
forward but we managed to clear the danger then with two minutes to go we
were awarded a free kick on the half way but Dan Williams free kick went
straight to a Caldicot player wide left, he made ground but wasn't able to
take advantage and another chance was lost. The last action of the game
saw
Caldicot awarded a free kick on half way which the keeper pumped into the
box, Ian Jones headed it out but a Caldicot player's through ball was too
strong and went for a goal kick which was game over.
