Caerleon 2-1 Afan Lido

The curse of Caerleon struck again, since we've been back in the league this is our third straight defeat there. Our performance deserved something but we just don't seem to get the rub of the green at this ground.

We went behind after 7 minutes, there was no danger to us after they played a long ball out of defence but for some reason Leon Cosker arrived 30 yards from goal, didn't get a touch on the ball allowing Luke Cueto to score. We pushed forward and Steve Davies, Shaun Best and Steve Cox combined giving Steve the chance to shoot, however his shot was blocked by the defence.

We should have equalised on 22 minutes when a right wing cross found Corey Thomas unmarked in the area but he snatched at it and shot wide from a good position. Caerleon pushed forward and Leon Cosker made a good save holding a powerful shot at the second attempt. We were awarded a free kick which Dan Williams knocked into the area, under pressure the keeper punched the ball clear. Justin Williams intercepted a Caerleon free kick and passed to Steve Davies then on to Kieran Howells and Corey Thomas before Michael Waters headed over the crossbar. On a difficult surface we were playing some neat football but Caerleon were trying to catch us on the break. Steve Davies took a left wing corner and swung it in under the bar, it hit someone in the mass of bodies and hit the crossbar and was eventually cleared. Right on half time a right wing corner from Michael Waters was headed goalwards by Steve Cox and cleared to the shouts of handball.

There was still time for a further free kick which was headed out to Michael Waters but again the Caerleon defence blocked his effort. Straight from the second half kick off Leon Cosker miskicked and had to make a diving save to keep it at 0-1. Steve Cox combined with Corey Thomas who found Steve Davies wide right, Steve made ground and got to the byeline but just couldn't keep the ball in play. On the hour Kieran Howells found Steve Davies who crossed into Shaun Best, he hit it first time and hit the crossbar with an effort on the turn. With Caerleon playing a waiting game we would be vulnerable to a quick break, somehow coming from a Lido throw on half way wasn't in the script. From no danger we lost the ball at the throw and the ball was played into the box and hit their 9 Chris Pearce and looped up and over Cosker giving him no chance. Cosker then made an excellent save tipping away a goalbound shot before Caerleon were reduced to 10 men their full back wasting time and trying the ref's patience (and ours) a little too much. Belying the fact they were down to 10 men Caerleon then hit the post with the ball going out for a goal kick. We played some excellent football in the last twenty minutes but a goal just wouldn't come, Steve Davies played in Luke Borrelli but the keeper just got to the ball ahead of him.

With 2 minutes to go Dan McGrath went down under a challenge in the area but a goal kick was given. Dan then tried his luck from 25 yards but the keeper made a good diving save. In 90 + 2 we finally got the goal our performance deserved, Justin Williams gave the ball to Steve Davies in the centre circle, he passed it on to Michael Waters who from inside the centre circle beat several players before shooting low to the left of the keeper from just inside the box. There was still time for Luke Borrelli to place a free kick under the crossbar but try as we might we just couldn't get an equaliser.
