Despite being under the cosh
for long periods of the game we held on to share the spoils against a strong
Bryntirion side. They made the better start but after 3 minutes Luke Borrelli
went down the left and with Corey Thomas waiting the keeper just held on to
Luke's cross. Michael Waters knocked the ball forward to Shaun Best but he was
tackled right on the edge of the area.
On 10 minutes Dan Williams
knocked a long ball to Shaun Best who headed on for Carl Payne in the area but
Carl was outmuscled by the defence and the ball was cleared. Bryntirion had a
corner right side we defended pretty poorly but luckily the Bryntirion player
mishit his shot and Leon Cosker was able to save diving to his left.
On 20 minutes we had a free
kick 35 yards out Michael Waters took it but it was straight at the keeper who
released it quickly and they caught us on the break only to shoot wide from a
good position. Justin Williams struggled to clear a ball in the box on 37
minutes but Leon Cosker was aware and saved Robbie Walters overhead shot at the
near post.
6 minutes before half time we
were awarded a free kick 25 yards out but this time Michael Waters failed to get
enough height on the ball and it was cleared by the first defender. Michael then
took a corner left side after Dan McGrath had switched play to Luke Borrelli but
his advance down the left was halted by the tackle. Michael played the ball in
the Bryntirion defence cleared, we played the ball back in but shot wide.
Right on half time and out of
the blue we scored, again we had a left sided corner but this time Luke Borrelli
took it, the keeper came out to claim it but dropped it Carl Payne knocked it
goalwards and Dan McGrath shot to score from a couple of yards. Given the timing
it couldn't have been better, we now had something to hold on to in the second
half.
Leon Cosker complained of being
unwell at half time and was physically sick behind the goal early in the half.
He continued after treatment but was possibly at fault for the equaliser. Shaun
Best took the wrong option when he broke down the right after 51 minutes, with
players waiting for a cross he chose to shoot and the keeper saved with ease.
They cleared the ball and Leon decided to punch the ball, his contact wasn't
great and the ball fell to Jonathan Cuss who did what all good strikers do, hit
the back of the net despite a challenge from Shaun Morgan. This unsettled us and
they attacked again and no-one took charge in the area allowing the ball to
bounce around before we knocked it behind for a corner. The corner came in and
they shot over the bar from 10 yards. Shaun Morgan then knocked a long ball
forward to Carl Payne who chested it into the path of Shaun Best. Shaun made
ground into the area but he sliced his shot wide from a good position. We
continued to be under pressure but several times when we cleared into the
Bryntirion half we were caught offside.
With 15 minutes to go we had
our best chance for some time, Carl Payne knocked the ball wide to Michael
Waters who cut inside and shot, the ball went for a corner which Michael took
and found Steve Cox beyond the far post. Steve hooked the ball with his left
foot just over the crossbar. Bryntirion again pushed forward and from a free
kick Leon Cosker came out to claim the cross and again relieve the pressure. We
continued to battle against a very good side and despite creating few chances
were probably worth the point we earned.
