Bryntirion Ath 1-2 Afan Lido

This proved a first success at Bryntirion on a rain soaked night. Until the last ten minutes or so there was always a danger of the match being abandoned but to be fair to the referee he used some common sense to see the game to it's conclusion. Dan Williams made his fiftieth Welsh League start. The match started in unusual circumstances when we went behind from a debatable free kick. Leon Cosker picked up the ball after a Bryntirion attack broke up, he made his way to the edge of the box but before he could clear the ball he was penalised for holding the ball for more than six seconds. Most spectators felt we were hard done by, even more so when the free kick was blocked and the ref ordered a retake presumably for encroachment. From the second attempt their 7 Gavin Thomas scored with a low shot. We kicked off and won a free kick, the ball was played into the penalty area and the ref blew and awarded us a penalty. Michael Waters stepped up and coolly slotted the ball into the net to level matters. Bryntirion were playing with a strong wind at their backs and they had a few efforts go harmlessly over the bar.

On 25 minutes they had a free kick 35 yards out played into the box but the forward got too much height on the ball and it went over for a goal kick. We now had the added problem of a monsoon in our faces, if we could hold out until half time and the rain continued then this would hopefully be to our advantage. Just after the half hour Steve Davies made ground down the right and found Michael Waters, he got to the byeline but lost the ball which was cleared straight to Kieran Howells 25 yards out. He hit it first time but his shot sailed harmlessly wide. Just before the interval Bryntirion were awarded a free kick and played a long ball in, it was headed across the face of our goal and from 6 yards their 6 Mika Chunuonsee somehow headed wide. Despite us now having the elements in our favour Bryntirion still tried to knock the ball around, Ian Gearie got to the byeline and crossed but Steve Parry cut it out and cleared and minutes later Steve Davies broke up an attack and cleared.

On 56 minutes we went ahead, Michael Waters had got to the byeline and passed to Steve Davies whose cross was cleared but picked up by Steve Parry who made ground before being fouled some 25 yards out on the left. Steve Davies whipped the free kick in and it eluded everyone before nestling in the goal. Just short of the hour a left wing cross was punched out by Leon Cosker and a shot came in, Steve Davies made a terrific stop virtually on the goal line to protect our lead. We then had a free kick in an almost identical spot to the goal, Steve Davies this time played it high into the goal, the keeper did well to hold the ball under the crossbar. Following a Lido throw the ball was played into Steve Cox but his shot went over the bar. Bryntirion won a corner which we cleared only for them to be awarded a free kick on the edge of the box. Again their 7 Gavin Thomas took it, Leon Cosker made an excellent save to his left to keep the dipping free kick out.

With 10 minutes to go Bryntirion won a corner on the left which we headed behind for a corner on the right. This was knocked in and Leon Cosker just got a touch on the ball to lift it over the head of a striker waiting to score. We cleared the ball up to Shaun Best who fed Steve Davies, he made ground into the box and from a tight angle shot over the bar. Bryntirion attacked again and Leon Cosker dived at the attacker's feet to knock the ball away the ball came back in and this time he saved the rebound. We were awarded a free kick in the centre circle and played it out to Luke Borrelli who having beaten the defender was fouled. Michael Waters took the free kick wide right and played it under the bar, the keeper tipped it over for a corner. Back came Bryntirion but again we cleared only for another shot to come in and go inches wide.

In the 89th minute Leon Cosker again made a critical save the ball again going to a Bryntirion shirt but the shot was high over the crossbar. In added on time Shaun Best handled the ball on the half way allowing Bryntirion one last chance, the ball was cleared and the final whistle sounded.
