Bluebirds fall fowl of bottom club
Gefni |
|
Gefni won their first ever
game in the top flight with a 2-1 win over Harry West, the win takes them off
the bottom spot on goal difference. While Harry West lost out on the chance to
move into 4th spot and within touching distance of the big three, they remain in
6th place.
Things look bright for the Anglesey
outfit when they took the lead in the 17 minute when Ywain
Gwynedd put them in front. And Gwynedd got his and Gefni's 2nd just 4 minutes
later.
The visitors gave themselves a
chance when they pulled a goal back in the 58th minute with a goal from Neil
Thomas, but Llangefni went onto win 2-1 and recorded their 2nd victory in 5
days, and alarm bells are starting to sound for Harry West, having taken just 1
point from their last 3 games.

Llangefni out to break their league duck |
|
CLUB captain Graham Austin could be back after a
four-match injury absence when Llangefni Town host Haverfordwest County at
Talwrn Road today.
Austin has been sidelined by a nagging groin
strain, but manager Adie Jones said the forward was ready for a return, although
Danny Roberts needs to check out groin problem.
Mark Jones and Chris Evans are definite
non-starters and Jones has a choice of goalkeeper between Farai Jackson, who did
well in the Loosemores Cup midweek 3-1 success over Caernarfon Town, and rival
Simon Williams.
Newcomers Llangefni currently prop up the table
as the only pointless side, but were encouraged by their Wednesday win.
Jones said: “Haverfordwest will present a
different challenge, recalling – from what I hear – perhaps seven players who
were not involved in their midweek cup tie so they will be fresh.
“We are on a bit of a high right now and a
back-to-back win would be tremendous for everyone at the club, but we realise
the lads must apply themselves all over again.
“What happened on Wednesday is behind us.
“But I am satisfied that we are creating enough
chances and we have done so in our last four games.”

Llanelli win seven goal thriller |
|
In an outstanding game at The Oval, Llanelli
extended their lead at the top of the Principality Welsh Premier Table with a
remarkable 4-3 win against Caernarfon, who lead 3-1 at one stage.
The League leaders made the perfect start
through a Rhys Griffiths strike after just 1 minute, but the lead was
short-lived as the Canaries levelled through Mark Thomas on eight minutes. They
then stunned Peter Nicholas' side with a double salvo in three minutes as
firstly James Glendenning (21) and then Bobby Jones (24) gave the Cofis a 3-1
advantage. In an amazing first half, the Reds pulled one back through
central-defender Wyn Thomas to make the Half-Time score 3-2.
Young pint-sized striker, Jordon Follows
brought the sides back level just after the hour in an absorbing contest.
Griffiths got his second to give the Reds the lead for the second time with
twelve minutes remaining.

Welsh Premier League round up |

TNS too good for
Carmarthen
The New Saints continued their rise up the table
into third place with an outstanding 3-0 win against Carmarthen Town. After a
goal-less first-half, TNS came out after the break flying with Mike Wilde
scoring a minute after the interval before Steven Beck added a second on 48
minutes for the Champions to take a 2-0 goal lead at Richmond Park.
Chris King made it three shortly after for Ken McKenna's side.
Neath hit by Williams double
A brace from Marc Lloyd Williams and
a Danny Jellicoe goal for Newtown gave the hosts a comfortable win at
Latham Park. Defender Jellicoe broke the
dead-lock three minutes after the interval and the prolific Lloyd
Williams doubled the advantage for the hosts and then finished on 84
minutes for his second
and put an end to
Neath's hopes of completing their first back to back double in the top
flight. Tommy Mutton was
named in the Robins starting line-up for his debut.
Bangor held by Caersws
At Farrar Road, Bangor's Sion Edwards scored the
first goal of the day inside the first minute to add to the woes of struggling
Caersws, but they managed to level on 19 minutes when Graham Evans scored from
the spot, his second successful penalty in as many games to gain a good point
for the Bluebirds.
Porthmadog back to
losing ways
NEWI Cefn Druids gained a very valuable three
points at Y Traeth with a good win against Clayton Blackmore's
Porthmadog. Druids winger Kevin Holsgrove scored after just two
minutes to give the visitors the early lead at Y Traeth, before the
in-form Paul Roberts equalised on 16 minutes for Port. The Druids
regained the lead on 21 minutes though as striker Mike Heverin scored,
which proved to be the winner.

Taz aims to kick-start
career at the Martyrs |
|
TAREQ Khalil has come home to Wales.
Tenacious central midfielder Khalil,
who spent nine years with Cardiff City, has signed for BGB Premier League club
Merthyr Tydfil.
Cardiff-born Khalil, 21, left the
Bluebirds to sign for Coca-Cola League One club AFC Bournemouth, but was
released during the summer.
Merthyr manager Garry Shephard
believes Khalil’s drive and passing ability can help give his team an extra edge
in midfield.
Khalil, whose mother is Welsh and his
father from Yemen, first signed for Cardiff at the age of 10. He was
highly-rated, but suffered injuries which knocked him back.
He suffered a serious knee injury
during an FA Youth Cup tie against Charlton Athletic in December 2002 and was
out for the rest of the season. Then he suffered a dislocated shoulder and was
out for five months.
But, after surgery on the shoulder,
Khalil returned to play in two cup finals, helping Cardiff City win the Youth
Alliance Cup, crushing Tranmere Rovers 6-1, and the Welsh Youth Cup, beating
Swansea City 4-1.
“I suffered a couple of bad injuries
while I was with Cardiff,” says Khalil. “I broke my kneecap and dislocated my
shoulder. But I’m 100 per cent now and looking forward to my time with Merthyr.”

Cardiff slip up late on an end
with a point |
|
Brian Howard's 84th-minute header salvaged a
point for Barnsley.
Cardiff started brightly but needed Kevin McNaughton to
clear Stephen Foster's header off the goal line.
The visitors' appeals for a penalty were turned down
just before the break, and manager Dave Jones was sent to the stands for his
protests.
Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink made Cardiff's pressure pay to
score with a near-post header on 73 minutes but a late home rally saw Howard
head in to equalise.
Cardiff came closest to securing the points in the dying
stages when Paul Parry, who had crossed for Hasselbaink's opener, screwed his
shot wide when well placed.
Barnsley also had a penalty claim turned down when Joe
Ledley appeared to handle the ball in the penalty area.
"We have big referees come down to this division, and he
hasn't put in a big performance.
Jones said
"I don't know why they are dropping down if they are not
performing in the Premier League.
"They should send them into the Sunday morning football
leagues if they need to drop down some divisions!
"The non-penalty was a decision which changed the game
even though it was only 0-0 at the time.
"I thought we totally dominated and should have won the
game and that decision has cost us."
Cardiff: Oakes, McNaughton, Johnson, Loovens,
Capaldi, Ledley, Rae, McPhail, Sinclair (Parry 67), Hasselbaink, Fowler.
Subs Not Used: Turnbull, Whittingham, Green, Gunter.

Swansea's disappointing home form continued |
|
Brighton held out for a deserved draw at the Liberty
Stadium.
The visitors created the best chances of a subdued
first-half, with Nicky Forster bringing the best out of home goalkeeper Dorus De
Vires.
Swansea improved after the break but a lack of cutting
edge up front meant many promising attacks came to nothing.
Brighton almost snatched a last-minute winner but Bas
Savage's bending left-foot effort hit the crossbar.
Swansea: De Vries, Monk, Rangel, Lawrence,
Painter, Bodde, Pratley, Orlandi (Bauza 90), Butler, Feeney (Anderson 63),

Subs Not Used: Knight, Austin, O'Leary.

Wrexham win bottom of the table
clash |
|
Wrexham ended a run of six successive defeats in all
competitions to claim a crucial victory at the Racecourse and climb off the
bottom of the table.
Adie Moses fouled Marc Williams to concede an early
penalty, but Alan Marriott saved Neil Roberts' strike.
In a rare moment of quality after the break, Williams
curled in a spectacular shot from the edge of the box.
To compound Lincoln's woes, Gary Croft was sent off on
the hour for a second bookable offence.
Wrexham: Anthony Williams, Danny Williams, Evans,
Hope, Carvill, Crowell, Garrett, Mark Jones, Taylor (Done 82), Marc Williams,
Roberts (Johnson 88).
Subs Not Used: Michael Jones, Pejic, Spender.

Steelmen
see off Aberystwyth |
|
Port
Talbot Town maintained their excellent unbeaten home record with a good 2-1
win over Aberystwyth Town at the Re/Max Stadium.
It was a
double-salvo in the first half for Tony Pennock's men that proved to be the
difference, despite Aneurin Thomas' goal for the visitors just two minutes
after the break.
Influential
midfielder Liam McCreesh opened the scoring with a 13th minute effort for
the hosts and the lead was doubled on 39 minutes with an effort from the
increasingly impressive Kerry Morgan, who struck his sixth goal in four
games for Port Talbot since his move from Swansea City.
The
Seasiders were given hope by defender Thomas, but they failed to grab a
second and the home side took all three point son offer.

Moran
Spot On for Lilywhites |
|
Hot-shot
Andy Moran struck twice for Rhyl to gain three points for John Hulse's side
against a spirited Airbus UK Broughton at Belle Vue.
Rhyl are
now level on goal difference with League leaders Llanelli, following their
2-1 win over the Wingmakers this evening, who were agonisingly denied a
point when striker Moran stepped up to convert an 84th minute penalty
.
The same
man had given the hosts the lead on seven minutes and it looked as though it
would turn into a convincing win for the home side. Gareth Owen's team had
different ideas though and they drew level when James McIntosh equalised on
38 minutes.
It then
looked as though the visitors would hang on before the spot-kick was
awarded. The Lilywhites have now gained 19 points from their eight matches,
adding pressure on the Reds who face a long trip North to Caernarfon Town on
Saturday.

All
square at the Deeside Stadium |
|
It was honours even at the
Deeside Stadium in a six-goal thriller as Connah's Quay Nomads twice came
from behind to gain a point against Welshpool.
The visitors made the
perfect start when midfielder Richard Harris struck for 'pool after just six
minutes. Nomads striker John McAllister drew the sides level after quarter
of an hour, before winger Stuart Cook gave the hosts the lead.
There was still more to
come in the first half though, as Welshpool striker Calvin Davies brought
the sides back level with six minutes left of the opening period.
Davies grabbed his second
to give Welshpool the lead again, but the Nomads showed character to come
back again, when defender Chris Williams, who has been on trial with
Millwall this week, struck his fourth goal of the season with a 71st minute
penalty.

Saints
pose big test for Brace |
|
CARMARTHEN
TOWN player manager Deryn Brace believes this afternoon’s home clash with
champions The New Saints will be a pointer to his team’s prospects this
season.
Having
taken over in the summer from his successful predecessor Mark Jones, Brace
could not have had a more depressing start as he saw the Old Golds pummelled
14-3 on aggregate by Norwegian giants FK Brann.
But since
losing their opening match of the campaign at Rhyl, the Richmond Park club
have been on a tremendous run of five wins and a draw from their last six
matches.
It has
swept them up to second spot, two places in front of the Saints, although
just one point separates the sides.
“The
Brann result could have ruined us, but the lads have stuck together and made
giant strides since then,” Brace said. “They have made things easy for
me and are an honest, hard-working set of players.
“We
have started well, but TNS is the big test of how far we’ve come or how
far we still need to go. They are the side all teams must try to emulate.”
Brace
added, “I’ve heard Ken (McKenna) feels his team have not performed to
their potential and I hope they don’t reach that against us. They have
secured five wins on the trot, so teams will have to watch out when they do
fire.”

Neath
target back to back wins |
|
Neath
manager Andrew Dyer is looking for back- to-back wins for the first time
since promotion to the Welsh Premier at Newtown. Last week's 2-1 triumph at
Caernarfon was a major boost and, with Newton's form patchy, Neath boss Dyer
sees further success tomorrow as a real option.
"It's the Newtown's, not the Llangefni's we must target if we are to
rise to mid-table, which is our objective this season,'' he said.
"Back-to-back victories would give the whole club confidence in what we
are trying to do.
"If we achieve it, it would give us four wins, four
defeats from our first eight matches and I'll take that.''
Dyer was also encouraged by the number of chances his side created midweek
against Llanelli in the Loosemores Challenge Cup group match, despite going
down 3-1.
"Unfortunately, our keeper gifted them a freak sixth-minute goal, but
we put in a gutsy performance and it was pleasing we created so much. But
once again we contributed to our own downfall.''
"If we can match the concentration levels we maintained at Caernarfon
I'm hopeful we can produce a result at Newtown.''
Billy Timothy and Rob Folland return to the squad, but Chris Pridham
(hamstring) is absent, as is Nicky Jones who has decided his future lies
elsewhere.

Exiles
facing tough start in cup |
|
NEWPORT County start their FA
Cup journey once again tomorrow with manager Peter Beadle hoping to finally
put the events at last year's Swansea City tie to bed.
The club were fined £3,000
and Beadle £1,500 after the first round match last November descended into
chaos when Beadle was sent off for arguing with officials and a coin thrown
from the stands struck a linesman.
The Exiles travel to face
Blue Square South rivals Basingstoke Town in the second qualifying round
(kick-off 3pm) with Beadle eager to put that day behind him once and for
all.
"It's in the past now.
We'd like to remember that day for the right reasons because I think we
played some good stuff but it was obviously overshadowed and we all learned
lessons from it," he said.
With County running into
form with three straight league wins, some may see Saturday's tie as a
distraction but Beadle insists that an FA Cup run is important to the club.
"It's the best cup
competition in the world and it's a chance for a bit of glory," he
added. "A good run in the cup boosts confidence and helps build morale
and will also be good financially."

Upbeat
Blackmore seeks a repeat |
|
PORTHMADOG, upbeat after their
opening win over Welshpool by an emphatic 3-0, are keen to bank more points
at home against Newi Cefn Druids today.
“We played well in our
last three games but did not get the right results against Airbus or TNS”,
said player-manager Clayton Blackmore.
“Now that we have
achieved the breakthrough, the important thing is to keep it up, especially
with a Premier Cup game against Port Talbot to follow on Tuesday.
“There are no new injury
worries, which is a help, after all the disruption of the early season when
we were having to change half the team every game.”
Midfielder Danny Hughes and
forward Jason Sadler are still out because of groin injuries, but striker
Paul Roberts, who bagged a brace at Welshpool, will be involved despite a
problem ankle.

City's
Veterans ready to silence doubters |
|
CARDIFF
CITY boss Dave Jones believes his Bluebird “veterans” are starting to
ram the words back down the throats of all those critics who said they were
past their sell-by dates.
And
Jones, whose side are back in Championship action at Barnsley tomorrow,
insists there is still even more to come from Robbie Fowler, Jimmy-Floyd
Hasselbaink and Trevor Sinclair.
Eyebrows
were raised during the summer when Jones brought in 32-year-old Fowler,
35-year-old Hasselbaink and 34-year-old Sinclair with some forecasting that
despite their excellent pedigrees they were over the hill and would never
flourish in the Championship.
After
a slow start, during which Fowler in particular was fighting for match
fitness, the doom merchants looked like they had a point, but now Jones’
gamble on the trio looks to be starting to pay off big time.

Steelmen
lose long serving defender |
|
Hugely popular Port Talbot
Town defender Robert Cockings has left the club to re-join South Wales
Amateur team Trefelin Boys and Girls Club, some ten years after he made the
reverse switch.
He joined the Steelmen when
they played in the Welsh League in 1997 and he played an important part in
the club gaining promotion to the Welsh Premier League in 2000. He has
remained a regular player in the side ever since although injury problems
and increased work commitments limited his opportunities in 2006-2007, but
he has remained a key member of the squad under six different managers
during his time at the club. An impressive debut season in the Welsh Premier
League prompted interest from Barry Town and Aberystwyth Town, but Robert
remained loyal despite the lucrative offers available to him.
He has made just two
appearances for Tony Pennock's side this term, both from the bench and he is
the second player to leave the Principality Welsh Premier side since the
closing of the Transfer window. This must be a concern for the club as they
cannot sign any new players to replace the duo until the Transfer Window
re-opens in January.

Real Madrid - then it's Caernarfon |
|
Andy
Legg faces Real Madrid today hoping to pick up his first piece of silverware
this season. The Llanelli midfielder will go up against the likes of Madrid
legends Fernando Hierro, Fernando Redondo and Alfonso Perez in the European
Charity Cup.
Legg will represent a celebrity XI against the Real Madrid Maestros at the
Spanish giants' training ground.
The former Welsh international took part in the game last year, which the
celebrities lost 5-0.
But the game is expected to be tighter this time around
with Legg being joined by the likes of Wales keeper Paul Jones, ex-England
star Luther Blissett and a few former professionals.
This week will prove quite a testing one for Legg.
He drove down from his family home in Nottingham for Tuesday night's League
Cup clash at Neath Athletic before jetting off for Madrid.
Following today's charity game, he will fly back to Luton before joining up
with the Llanelli squad for Saturday's trip to Caernarfon.
"It's a busy week," said Legg. "But the charity game is a
good crack. I think our team is taking it more seriously this year.
"We are playing against some legends of Real Madrid and it's a great
experience.
"Then it's all about Caernarfon on Saturday."

Aber
boss hoping for an extended run |
|
ABERYSTWYTH boss Brian Coyne
is looking for his side to string together an extended unbeaten run in their
efforts to keep in touch with the top six teams in the Welsh Premier. Having
made a steady start to the season, the Seasiders will be aiming to build on
their midweek draw at Caersws, and an encouraging home win over Bangor City
last weekend. With only seven matches played, the Aber manager is determined
to see his side keep in touch with the leading pack, and is looking for a
positive result at Port Talbot on Friday.
Having only managed to
scrape a draw at lowly Caersws last Tuesday, Coyne said that he was pleased
with the way his side then bounced back to beat Bangor at Park Avenue. “It
was always going to be a tough game against Bangor, especially after their
big win the previous weekend, but the boys played very well and got what
they deserved,” he said. “We didn’t really perform at Caersws, and in
the end we were relieved to get a point, we just about scraped the draw,
Geoff Kellaway came on and scored to get us out of a hole.
“We were disappointed
with the result, but it was still a point away from home, and their draw
against league leaders Llanelli at the weekend per-haps puts things in
perspective. “Yet, the boys responded well very on Saturday, it was a
terrific result, and the important thing is that we keep in touch with the
top sides, and do not fall too far behind them. “It is still very early in
the season, but I feel that we have made a steady start, and having taken
four points from our last two games, I would like us to keep the unbeaten
run going.” Having only played three matches on a Saturday so far this
season, the Seasiders return to Friday night football when they travel to
Port Talbot’s Remax Stadium this Friday.

League
could axe Premier reserves |
THE future make-up of the Spar
Mid Wales League will be discussed at a crunch meeting next month.
The Welsh FA has previously
granted dispensation for the league to permit reserve sides to participate.
However Welsh FA councillor and Spar Mid Wales League secretary Phil Woosnam
confirmed the such allowances would not be made in the future.
“The Welsh FA regards the creation of a reserve league in Mid Wales highly
on their agenda,” said Woosnam.
“The meeting is a chance for league officials to hear the views and
thoughts of clubs on what they would like to see happening in the future.”
Currently Newtown, Aberystwyth Town, Caersws and The New Saints field
reserve strings in the Spar Mid Wales League. However there is a growing
argument among other clubs in the league that the time is right to remove
all reserve sides from the pyramid.
“Some clubs will be thinking in terms of self preservation as this season
will definitely see the league enforce relegation while others will argue
that the reserve sides have helped raise the standards of the entire
league,” added Woosnam.

Mutton
on the menu for Neath clash |
TOMMY Mutton looks set to
make his Newtown bow in this weekend's clash with Neath Athletic.
The 29-year-old striker has
been unavailable since his deadline day switch from Welsh Premier rivals
Bangor City.
However his return to availability provides the Robins with a massive
boost ahead of the visit of the league newboys.
Assistant manager Mike Davies said: “Neath are a decent side and not to
be taken lightly. They have a good defensive record and will provide a
very good test for our lads.”
The Robins’ hopes of a three pronged forward line could be dashed though
with Craig Moses facing a late fitness test.
Defender Hugh Clarke is also a major doubt with a neck injury, which
forced him out of the Robins victory over Llangefni Town last weekend.
“We have a few promising lads knocking on the door and it’s a nice
problem for the management to face going into the game with Neath.”

I won't
crack says Carey |
BRIAN CAREY today gave his
most honest assessment of the position he and rock bottom Wrexham
Football Club find themselves in.
Amid boos and criticism
from die- hard fans after the club's worst start to a season in years,
Carey insisted he is not feeling under any pressure in the cut-throat
world of 'results-mean-everything' football management.
Carey says he is determined to take Wrexham up the League Two table,
starting at home to Lincoln City on Saturday.
"There's no pressure," said Carey today. "All along I
have said that it is not about me.
"I am not worried about anything that may or may not happen in the
future. I am just concentrating on the Lincoln match, and getting the
club up the table.
"Yes, things have to improve, everyone knows what football is like.
I'm not stupid, and I know what happens when things are going wrong.
"We have to improve and get the job done because the club does not
deserve to be bottom of the league."
Wrexham, who have lost their last six matches – four in League Two –
will aim to end their slump when they play host to struggling Lincoln on
Saturday.
The Reds then follow that up with another home match against high-flying
Chesterfield on Tuesday evening.

Can new
boss stop Garw’s losing streak? |
|
ALTHOUGH
Garw stumbled to an eighth successive defeat this season – this time
in the first round of the Nathaniel Cars League Cup – there were signs
here that new manager Mike Colcombe is beginning to have an impact.
At
the start of the season, the Blandy boys were beginning to fade by
half-time, but against the Rice Roaders that wasn’t the case until the
80-minute mark.
At this stage, Garw were
well in contention at 3-3, but two late goals allowed the
Carmarthenshire side to make cup progress.
“The
boys played well and there was much more of a buzz in the changing room
afterwards,” said Garw chairman Michael Lambert.
“Mike
Colcombe’s work at the club is beginning to tell, and hopefully the
worst is now behind us.”

A
fantastic start for Ton's new youth side |
|
TON
Pentre AFC have formed a youth side for the first time in the clubs
history.
The
junior Bulldogs have enjoyed a great start to the season and have a 100
per cent record after two games.
The
team started the season with a 2 - 0 win against Caerleon at Ynys Park
in the East Division of the Welsh Football Youth League.
Both
goals were scored by Leon Jacka to give Ton all three points.
In
their next game Ton beat Cardiff Corries by five goals to four with
Jonathan Hood scoring a fantastic hat-trick.
The
side is managed by former first-team coach John Emmanuel who brings a
wealth of experience to the team.
He
played international football for Wales and once took Ton into the
Intertoto Cup.
Jill
Evans MEP, who sponsors the Ton Pentre Youth team, said: "It's
always a pleasure to support local projects that give young people a
chance to shine and develop.
"It
also continues my family's links with the club. My grandfather's brother
Stan Yeates, built the stands at Ynys Park and his son John also played
for the club.
"With
the new youth set-up, I hope these young players will move on to play
for the first team, therefore providing even greater success in the
future.
"Who
knows? With increased support from the local and wider community some of
the youth players of today many be representing the Bulldogs in the

Celtic
shock below-par County |
|
Cwmbran Celtic 3 County 0
CWMBRAN Celtic upset the odds
to record a famous victory over a jaded looking Newport County last night.
The MacWhirter Welsh League
Division Two outfit moved into the semi-finals of the Gwent Senior Cup with a
comprehensive 3-0 win over a County side showing 11 changes from Saturday's
2-0 win over Braintree.
First-team squad players
Shane Brewer, Lee Fowler, Sam O'Sullivan and Craig Hughes all started the
game, however, and there was a welcome return for central defender Paul
Cochlin, coming on from the bench to make his first appearance since December
last year.
The rest of the side was made
up of first and second year youth players and it was no surprise that they
looked tired as most of them had played in the FA Youth Cup extra-time defeat
at Merthyr on Tuesday night.
That's to take nothing away
from Cwmbran Celtic who approached the game with a determined attitude and
gave an excellent all-round team performance.
The lively red-haired striker
Shane Williamson scored with two beautiful efforts, the first an unstoppable
drive from 30 yards after 28 minutes and the second a well-placed curler on 73
minutes.
In between Craig Cheedy
netted Celtic's second just after the hour mark when he found himself alone on
the edge of the box from a corner and coolly side-footed the ball through a
crowd of players and into goalkeeper David Pearce's net.
"It was the biggest
competitive game in our history and we all played well and we deserved it.
"I'm knackered but I was
delighted with the clean sheet and Tom Morgan in goal did brilliantly for a
lad of 16 on his debut.
"I'm pleased for Shane
Williamson too, he doesn't score any tap-ins, only screamers, and they were
both great goals.
"The league is more
important but it was a great night and we're in the semis so we're looking to
win the cup now."

aiming to build on cup win |
|
Manager Dave
Jones is hoping Cardiff can repeat their Carling Cup exploits when they return
to Championship action at Barnsley on Saturday.
The Bluebirds tore West Brom
apart in Tuesday's 4-2 win and Jones knows his side will be full of
confidence.
"We want to get to that
level of consistency that we've all been looking for," Jones told BBC
Wales Sport.
"Tuesday should give
them a massive boost of confidence going into the game against Barnsley."
Jones is hopeful defender
Kevin McNaughton will be available for the trip to Oakwell after he came off
before the end of the West Brom win.
The 25-year-old defender has
struggled with a hamstring injury, although he is not expected to miss out.
Captain Darren Purse is
unlikely to make the trip despite coming through a reserve match unscathed on
Wednesday, as Jones feels Barnsley may be "too soon" for him.
But Jones will be looking for
fit-again Robbie Fowler and Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink to fire in front of goal
after both finally got off the mark.
"The two of them know
that because of what they have done in their careers, they are always going to
be up there to be shot at," he said.
"They've got a point to
prove as if they were 22, rather than 32. They knew the sooner they got off
the mark, the better it was for everybody.
"But as I said earlier
in the season, to do that they've got to be fit.

Feeney
out to take Swans chance |
|
Warren Feeney is set for his
first start for Swansea after a groin strain ruled Darryl Duffy out of
Saturday's clash at home to Brighton.
The on-loan Cardiff striker
has been pushed down the pecking order at Ninian Park following the arrivals
of Robbie Fowler and Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink.
But he said: "You don't
wish for anyone to get injured but it's a chance.
"I'm here to play
football and I want to do well for Swansea so I will grab it with both
hands."
Feeney is the fourth player
in the last 10 years to have played for the Swans having previously been at
Cardiff.
Kevin Nugent, Terry Evans and
Tony Bird are the others, although they arrived from different clubs.
But Feeney says he knows all
about the rivalry between the two south Wales clubs.
"It was a pure football
decision to come here," he said. "I know the rivalry between the
fans, but fans are fans and I respect that.
"As long as you're
honest and have a go, they'll respect that. I don't want to let anyone down.
"Hopefully I will get my
chance on Saturday and hopefully I can shine."

Nomads
Williams on trial at Millwall |
CONNAH'S Quay centre back Chris
Williams has spent the first half of this week on trial with Millwall.
Nomads boss Jim Hackett spent the back end of last season working in a
scouting capacity for the League One outfit and says: "I was contacted by
chief scout Pat Holland three weeks ago enquiring about Bungle.
"I have kept in touch
with Pat since taking on the Nomads job and it was agreed, with the chairman's
blessing, for Bungle to go down and train with Millwall for a couple of days
when time allowed," says Hackett.
"This week was seen as
an ideal time for him to go, the idea being for them to look at him as a
possible future signing and him to look at the level of League 1 footballers
and set his own playing standards based on what he saw.
"He wasn't allowed to
play in any matches and trained with the first team squad as agreed."
Williams, who is contracted to the Nomads until the end of the season and was
a target for ex-boss Nev Powell at Bangor City this summer, has now returned
to Deeside.
Hackett added that he would
be contacting the Lions' management later this week to find out their feelings
about the player.

Whitfield
leaves Rhyl for Lairds |
|
AFTER losing his place in the
Belle Vue pecking order following the arrival of Lee Kendall, goalkeeper Paul
Whitfield has left Rhyl to sign for Cammell Laird.
He joins several other former
Lilywhites at the Unibond Division One South club, including Lee Atherton,
Carl Clampitt, Alex Hay and Chris Taylor, alongside former Rhyl assistant boss
Neil Young.
A former Wrexham trainee and Wales Under-21 international, Whitfield made 91
Welsh Premier appearances, also wearing the colours of Connah's Quay, Newtown,
Airbus UK and Bangor but, after injury in a North Wales Coast Cup game, found
himself second choice behind John Gann at Rhyl last season.
"I wish Paul all the
best," Rhyl manager John Hulse told Lilywhites Online.
"He never let anyone down, but it simply wasn't viable to keep three
keepers at the club."

Hughes
concern over Wrexham's woe |
|
Mark Hughes has expressed his
concern over Wrexham's current plight at the bottom of the Football League.
The Blackburn boss, who was
raised near Wrexham, said he has been surprised by Dragons' poor start to the
season.
"It's disappointing. We
played them in pre-season and they quite impressed me," Hughes told BBC
Sport. "I thought they had the makings of a good team.
"I was hopeful, as a
Wrexham lad, they would have a decent season and not be in the same situation
as last season."
Wrexham avoided relegation to
the Conference on the final day of last season by beating Boston at an
emotionally charged Racecourse.
Manager Brian Carey then
immediately promised to rebuild the squad and restore the club's fortunes,
setting his sights on promotion this season to League One.
Five new players were
recruited over the summer, but the changes have had little effect as Wrexham
have managed just three points from their first six league games.
"Maybe it's a case of it
being the start of the season and that the new players are finding their feet
and getting used to the surroundings," added Hughes.
"Hopefully once that
period is over then they'll get their game going and they'll be able to climb
the league.

Crows
focused on return flight to the Premier |
|
CWMBRAN
Town are still focused on winning the MacWhirter Welsh Football League title.
They
fielded a complete reserve team in the Nathaniel Car Sales League Cup defeat
against Abertillery Excelsiors and lost 5-1, but Crows secretary Ian Greaney
said: “Our priority is the league and there are a lot of injuries in the
squad.
“The
manager, Guilermo Ganet, opted to rest players and allow injuries to clear up.
The League Cup tie at Abertillery was an ideal chance to do that.”
Ganet has
signed a number of players from his football academy in London and they travel
to train and play for Cwmbran Town, including top scorer John Black N’Gody
from Cameroon.
“The
whole first team will be at training today and on Thursday,” said Greaney.
“And they
will be involved in Saturday’s First Division match against Maesteg Park at
home.
“We
realise there are some quality teams in the Welsh League and it’s going to
be a tough fight, but the manager has set a target of earning promotion within
two years. If we can achieve that in the first season everybody would be
delighted.”

Bluebirds
romp home against West Brom |
|
Robbie Fowler grabbed a brace as
Cardiff tore West Brom apart to reach the fourth round of the Carling Cup.
He put the Bluebirds ahead
after four minutes converting Stephen McPhail's cross before Jimmy-Floyd
Hasselbaink doubled the lead with a 20-yard strike.
Fowler got his second from
the penalty spot after Joe Ledley was felled in the box and Trevor Sinclair
made it 4-0 inside the first 30 minutes.
Ishmael Miller pulled two
goals back for West Brom with one from the spot.
Cardiff manager Dave Jones:
"I thought the performance would come at home, I didn't think it would
come away and I said if those two (Fowler and Hasselbaink) fired well, someone
was going to come on the backlash of it and fortunately, West Brom got it in
the first half.
"The problem we had was
getting them fit. I'm pleased for the pair of them because they have worked
really hard and they've had to do that because they've been playing catch-up.
"The second half was
just about killing it off and settling it down."

Six of

Rhyl have beaten an under
strength Connah's Quay Nomads 6-1 in the Loosemores Cup. Striker Lee Hunt went
straight back into the Rhyl side following his three match suspension and the
dangerman scored twice to mark his return.
He played alongside Dave
Cameron who also grabbed a brace after his boss publicly requested that the
Scot score more goals. Fellow-striker Andy Moran also got in on the act,
whilst defender Matthew Holt bagged his first senior goal.
Ex-Bangor City skipper Paul
O'Neil was left on the bench in favour of the former Everton youngster Holt,
whilst Jimmy Kelly returned from injury to partner Gareth Wilson in midfield.
It was a great night for striker Chris Sharpe who featured on the bench for
the first time in over a year following a career-threatening knee injury.
Jim Hackett made seven
changes from Saturday's defeat to TNS with experienced duo Gary Pinch and
Chris Williams not featuring, but Paul Glynn, Wayne Morgan, Adam Hitchin,
Jamie Petrie, Chris Herbert, Stewart White and Stuart Cook all gained recalls
on a poor night for the Nomads

Llanelli
win again against Neath |
|
The main talking point at
Llandarcy Park was the full debut of former Wales midfielder Matthew Jones in
the Llanelli midfield. The ex-Leeds Utd man played instead of the suspended
Antonio Corbisiero, whilst Nicky Holland and Sam Small both started at Andy
Mumford's and Stuart Jones' expense. Neath left top scorer and captain Andy
Hill on the bench, giving Andrew Fairburn a chance to impress.
Llanelli repeated last week's
Welsh Premier success at Neath, winning 3-1 this time around. But the victory
came at a price after defender Gary Lloyd was red-carded in the 32nd-minute
when the Reds were already two goals to the good through a Craig Williams
double.
Jarrod Price did pull a goal
back for the Eagles, but the 10 men went on to add another in the second half
thanks to Craig Jones.

The
best is yet to come from Robbie – Jones |
|
ROBBIE
Fowler’s first goals for Cardiff City at least gave manager Dave Jones some
crumbs of comfort after another frustrating performance at Ninian Park.
The
former England striker twice gave the Bluebirds the lead against Preston with
a couple of classic poacher’s goals, and enjoyed his best game yet in a City
shirt.
“Robbie
took his goals well,” said Jones, “and we know he’ll just get better and
better.
“He’s
looking sharper all the time, and that first goal for us clearly gave him a
huge boost in confidence.”
“I
bumped into Robbie and his family on Saturday night, and he was obviously
pleased to get off the mark.
“You
could see the weight visibly lift off his shoulders when the ball hit the
net.”
The
32-year-old opened his Cardiff account three days after fellow summer signing
Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink fired his first City goal in the 2-1 defeat at home to
Watford.
Jones
is convinced the former Premiership duo can forge a successful partnership for
the Bluebirds, but only as long as the rest of his players can provide the
pair with a better service.
“Jimmy
and Robbie are working well together,” said Jones.
“But
the defence and midfield have got to deliver the ball far better to them.
“We
need to pass the ball with quality instead of humping it.”

Pennock
delight after timely win |
|
Port
Talbot Town manager Tony Pennock admitted that his side's superb 5-1
demolition of Newi Cefn Druids at the Remax Stadium provided a timely and
much-needed boost. Inspired by Swansea City wizard Kerry Morgan, who slammed
in a magnificent hat-trick, the Steelmen secured only their second victory of
the campaign.
Ironically, the other success was also at home, against Newtown, and by the
same scoreline.
''I probably sound happier than I have done for a few weeks and for good
reason,'' said Pennock. ''We desperately needed that win.
''It was a better victory than the one against Newtown as we
played the football I know we are capable of in the style myself and Paul
(Reid) want to play.
''We were unbelievable for the first 35 minutes and scored three in a great
five-minute spell.''
Pennock maintains that his side are under-deliverers so far but warned: ''We
are a match for any team in this league, especially with everyone fighting for
the cause.''
And he reserved special praise for three-goal hero Morgan. ''He's always a
real threat, gives 100 per cent every match, is a real jack-in-the-box and his
finishing, as he showed today, is fantastic.''

Lido
scuffle riles Caerleon’s boss Dowd |
|
The ugly side of football reared
its head at Cold Bath Lane with both clubs now facing hefty fines after the
clash was called off with 30 minutes still remaining.
Allegedly Afan Lido had
generally persisted in preventing Caerleon from playing the game by foul
means.
Matters, however, came to a
head when a Lido player appeared to kick Caerleon's Paul Shephard in the face,
an act which prompted a mass free-for-all.
Punches and kicks were
exchanged, and after the dust had settled Mr Fisher sent off Caerleon's Jason
Price and Lido pair Carl Evans and Brian Thomas, the goalkeeper.
But there was more to come.
The official next brought together both sets of management teams and informed
them that he had had enough and had abandoned the match.
But the decision was wrong,
according to Caerleon boss Brendan Dowd: "He told us that he had sent off
the players who had caused and been involved in all the trouble, so I can't
see what the problem was.
"He should have
restarted the game, and then if there had been further trouble, then that's
when he should have called it off.
"I have to defend my
players and tell you that they endured much throughout the game before they
decided there was only so much they could take.
"They were kicked,
punched, had their shirts pulled on a regular basis, all virtually right from
the word go."
Officials of the Welsh League
will now await the referee's match report before deciding on what course of
action to take in terms of any punishment.

Beadle:
County are on the up |
|
NEWPORT County boss Peter Beadle
is promising his side can perform much better despite soaring into the
Conference South playoff positions.
The Exiles have moved up to
fourth in the league after beating Braintree at the weekend, winning 2-0 for
the third time in a week.
Beadle's boys have kept clean
sheets in six of their opening ten games this season, but Beadle sees his side
getting even better as the weeks go by.
Just a fortnight ago some
supporters were criticising the manager after successive away defeats, but
Beadle insists his team are just getting started.
"I still think we can
get much better, on Saturday I thought we were sloppy at times and a little
bit lethargic, particularly in the first half," he explained.
I told the players what I
thought, just because we won 2-0 and have won three on the game doesn't mean
we can't improve.
"Teams will expect us to
be tough, physical and energetic and we don't want to show them differently
and help to get our opponents tails up."

Jones
is backing Ridsdale |
|
Cardiff boss Dave Jones said it
would be "stupid" if chairman Peter Ridsdale walked out on the club
over abusive texts from fans.
The former Leeds supremo
offered his resignation to the club's board which was unanimously rejected.
"If Peter walked away
and the board walked away I don't know what would happen," said Jones.
"You've got to go and
try and find someone who can re-live the dream again and that just seems
stupid to me."
Jones gave his full backing
to Ridsdale saying he was key to the club's transformation over the last 18
months.
"Peter has worked his
socks off and all the board are too," he said.
"The biggest mistake
this football club would make at this moment in time is if they (supporters)
pull the plug on Peter and the board because they are pushing the club forward
no ends.
"It's unbelievable
what's gone on in the last 18 months. It's frightening when you consider the
club didn't have to what it could have in the next 18 months.
"Every player here he's
had a big say in bringing in because he's had to give the go-ahead.
"It's not just my
decision who comes in. It's the chairman and the board's decision because they
have to back it and make sure the finances are right.
"They are not doing it
to fail, they are doing it because they want to do well, just like me.

Thomas
concerned by Wrexham form |
|
Mickey Thomas feels Wrexham's
players cannot handle the pressure as they look to lift themselves off the
bottom of the Football League.
But the Wrexham legend
insists the club's board should keep faith in manager Brian Carey.
"I think some of the
players are feeling the pressure from the fans' anger and
disappointment," said Thomas.
"It's how you adapt and
maybe that's the telling moment that they can't handle the pressure."
Thomas spoke out on the back
of the Dragons' latest loss at Stockport, which has left them with five
defeats out of their opening six league outings.
"It's disappointing
reading of the table when you see them at the bottom but I think you have to
keep the faith in Brian Carey and his backroom staff," he said.
"Brian has made one or
two additions to the squad which I thought would make them better, but at the
moment results aren't going their way.
"There is immense
pressure. You are in a winning related business where you have to win football
games to take the pressure off you.
"This is a difficult
time and this will show how good Brian is. Can they get the results turned
around?"
Thomas stressed it was
important to pick up a result within the next couple of games to avoid
confidence being drained away.

Cardiff
'stopped rot' says Jones |
|
Despite twice being pegged back
by Preston in Saturday's 2-2 draw, Dave Jones was at least relieved it stopped
a run of three home league defeats.
"If we're going to take
any consolation it's that we've stopped the rot here, which was becoming a
little bit annoying," said the Cardiff manager.
"I could feel the
tension before the match... but to be fair we caused havoc and their keeper
made some great saves.
"At the moment we're
trying to put one or two square pegs in round holes."
Roger Johnson was carried off
on a stretcher after getting a blow to the head in the last moments at Ninian
Park.
The centre-back recovered in
the dressing room afterwards but remains a doubt for Tuesday night's third
round Carling Cup match at West Bromwich Albion.
With Darren Purse and Glenn
Loovens already out injured, Jones may have to field a very makeshift defence.

Martinez: We
have tough lessons to learn |
|
ROBERTO
Martinez admitted his Swans side will learn the lessons from their toughest
trip of the season – but insisted he wouldn’t swap squads with Dennis
Wise.
Martinez
refused to be downbeat after Swansea struggled to get a look-in at Elland
Road, but did concede his team need to match Leeds’ winning mentality. And
he remained adamant his style of football will eventually win through after
the fallen Premiership giants’ powerhouse performance shut out the Swans.
“We will come out of this stronger,” he said. “If I am being a bit harsh
I would say we didn’t play as well as we could have.
“We need
to come to places like this and still be ourselves so perhaps we need to
develop a winning mentality like Leeds have shown.
“They
have huge momentum and the 15-point deduction has helped them because they
don’t have to be pretty, just effective and win games. But I wouldn’t swap
squads with them. We will improve after this.”
Martinez
would not accept Leeds’ rough and relentless style completely overpowered
Swansea, adding: “They are a different team to us but I didn’t think it
was too difficult to cope with. We were coming back into the game and there
wasn’t much in it, we were cancelling each other out.
“They play percentage
football and don’t take too many chances but if we can keep playing as well
as we can then we will be okay.”

Wrexham 'keeper Anthony Williams

The Dragons are struggling at
the foot of the League Two table after losing 2-1 to Stockport at the weekend.
And Williams insists that
Wrexham need to turn the corner soon, otherwise they will face another
relegation dogfight.
"People need to stand up
and be counted and we need to show people we care and give it 100%," said
Williams.
He added: "It is not
about what you do with the ball, it is about what we do without it, and we
need to be switched on for 90 minutes.
"We are trying to turn
the corner and we have to go into Tuesday's game full of confidence and put

Hulse
& McKenna not happy with performances |
|
WITH leaders Llanelli dropping
two home points, Rhyl failed to capitalise after a 1-1 draw at Haverfordwest
and the Lillies' boss John Hulse was scathing in his criticism of his side's
failure to put away their chances.
"I know players don't
miss chances on purpose but that was pathetic," said Hulse.
"Schoolboys of under eight would have been disappointed with that
finishing today."
The New Saints' manager Ken
McKenna was also disappointed despite a 3-1 home win over Connah's Quay Nomads
that takes his side up to fourth in the table.
The visitors got back into the game with a Mark Cadwallader shot after
trailing by three goals, and then had a Stewart White goal disallowed for
offside.
"I can't quite put my

"Sometimes when we're controlling a game there's a tendency to switch off

Cymru
Alliance round up |
|
BALA
Town’s proud unbeaten record as the Alliance’s early leaders was shattered
by a shock 2-1 show at mid-table Guilsfield, whose Simon Edwards and Emyr
Roberts featured as the scorers.
A reply
goal from Jonathan Newell was not enough to rescue the top team’s six-match
success run and now Colin Caton’s men find their lead is trimmed to just one
point.
Llandudno
Town are closing up as well, in third place, after a satisfying 3-1 home feat
against the former champions Glantraeth, in which Lee Thomas bagged a brace of
goals.
Bryn
Jenkins opened the Seasiders’ account after a quarter-of-an-hour and Thomas
joined in after 20 and 87 minutes, with team-mate Ben Dews conceding an own
goal to help Glantraeth’s cause.
Lex picked
up a goal in each half to add to the woes of bottom club Bodedern, who are
still seeking their first win, and the damage was imposed by Steve Holman
after 22 minutes and Tinashe Mutanha after 50.
A 3-3
thriller was played out by Llanfairpwll and Penrhyncoch, with six different
scorers involved, crucially Iwan Roberts firing the visitors’ 74th minute
equaliser.
Prestatyn
Town rediscovered winning ways with a 3-1 home victory over Holyhead Hotspur.
Dave Hayes
headed the Seasiders into the lead on seven minutes, but on the half hour Ian
Williams equalised.
Town took
over in the second half and although Hotspur keeper Liam Shanahan did well to
keep out a Steve Bowes shot, player/manager Neil Gibson put away the rebound.
Russ Jones
added a third with a close-range header and Holyhead were reduced to 10 men in
the last minute when Dean Garmey was dismissed for a bad challenge.
After a
goal-less first half, Denbigh Town turned on the style to beat Mynydd Isa 3-0
at Central Park.
Luke
O'Mahoney struck on 47 and 51 minutes, latching onto through balls by Paul
Edwards and Tommy Harrison respectively to apply fine finishes. In the 90th
minute a foul on Harrison resulted in a penalty which Kenny Burgess put away.
Llandyrnog
United were thankful to pip Queen's Park 1-0 in a close call. Dyrny got the
only goal on 73 minutes through skipper Chris Williams who netted after Neal
Hughes pulled the ball back after a good run. Queen's might have levelled when
Ed Morris Jones's thunderous shot hit a post. Kevin Leach clattered the

Caernarfon
striker gets 7 month ban |
|
Caernarfon Town have been rocked
with the news that striker Chris Noone, who has scored four goals, in four
League matches for the Canaries has been suspended for over seven months,
until 10th April 2008.
The suspension carries over
from an incident, whilst he was playing in the English system. The suspension
had not been processed by the FA at the time when International Clearance was
applied for following his transfer to Caernarfon Town from Vauxhall Motors.
The incident was brought to
the attention of the FAW by the FA who informed the Association that he was
subject to an interim suspension prior to the player appearing before a
Disciplinary commission to consider the charge against him. The FAW
implemented this suspension which resulted in him missing last weekend's match
at home to Rhyl and the midweek win over Llangefni.
Following a hearing this
week, the FAW were informed that the player would be suspended until April
10th next year, which means that his season is all but over and Caernarfon
Town will certainly miss the forward who has made an immediate impact at the
club. The International Clearance which was granted has been rescinded.

did wonders for the goal difference too, and he has the advantage of working
with a young squad. Speaking after the game, he was reluctant to single out
individuals – emphasising that it had been a good team effort, particularly
in the first half, when they built a 4 - 1 lead.
However,
you can't ignore hat-tricks, and new striker Ceri Morgan caught the eye with
two goals in the first half, and another 20 minutes from time.
Pennock
did single out Liam McCreesh, who has made the short journey from Afan Lido,
and who scored an excellent goal, with a fierce shot from the edge of the
area. Pennock praised his versatility and overall contribution to the team.
The final goal came from
Martin Rose, now in his second season at Port Talbot, and who is forging a
promising partnership with Morgan.

Neath
see off Caernarfon |
|
A
DRAMATIC penalty, converted by Andy Hill three minutes into stoppage time,
enabled Neath to plunder an unlikely win on their first visit to Caernarfon.
Hill
steered the gift of a chance into the net past the hosts’ stand-in keeper
James Glendenning.
And
the lacklustre contest suddenly erupted as Caernarfon’s keeper Vinnie Whelan
appeared to head-butt Hill and was shown the red card.
Town
finished with nine players in a game where neither keeper was seriously
tested.
The
hosts forced seven corners to the visitors’ two, with nothing to show for
them.
Then
on 39 minutes Neath grabbed the lead when Brian Showdery headed on target
following a right-wing cross.
The
situation became 1-1 on 67 minutes, when Town’s sub John Rowley turned in a
corner from the left and that deadlock seemed to be heading towards the result
– until the stoppage time explosion.

Llanelli
10-men draw with Caersws |
|
THE
HOME fans must have expected Llanelli to extend their 100 per cent start with
a win over Caersws, who have had a distinctly under whelming start to the
season.
Indeed,
the game could have been tied up within the first half hour.
First,
Rhys Griffiths found himself in a good position after just two minutes, but
shot over the bar.
Then,
Llanelli’s new young striker, Mark Pritchard, was twice in on goal but each
time the chance went begging.
Finally,
Pritchard made amends after 26 minutes, when he seized on a good cross from
Antonio Corbisiero and forced the ball past the despairing dive of Caersws
keeper Andy Mulliner.
The
first moment that brought a sense of unease to the watching home fans came
when Caersws striker Graham Evans raced clear after a through ball eluded the
Llanelli central defenders. He advanced on keeper Ryan Harris but shot wide.
The
shape of the game changed completely, however, in first half injury time, when
Corbisiero stopped a goal-bound effort, in the referee’s opinion, with his
hand. There were plenty of home fans who were prepared to swear it was some
other part of his anatomy, but it did no good.
The
Spaniard was shown the red card and Graham Evans rubbed salt into the wound by
converting the penalty.
However,
the old cliche about 10 men being more difficult to play against than 11 held
true, and a re-shaped Llanelli had the better of the second half. It was a
more compact formation, but they had the lion’s share of the possession,
although neither side could claim to have created much in the way of clear-cut
chances.
The
closest that the home side came to scoring was through the introduction of the
former Welsh international Matthew Jones. Forced to give up his career with
Leeds United after a bad injury, he still has to get back to full match
fitness, but he showed flashes of real class – the highlight being a 25-yard
shot that clipped the top of the bar.
In
the end, Llanelli were relieved to maintain their three point-lead at the top
of the table, after Rhyl were held to a one-all draw at Haverfordwest.

Rhyl
turn the heat up on Harry West |
|
HAVERFORDWEST,
despite taking the lead in first half injury time, were content in the end to
settle for a draw – after Rhyl had pressed for most of the second half.
That
first goal, however, gave the home fans a warm glow, coming from 19-year-old
youth team product Nicky Woodrow.
He
raced onto a through ball and was confronted with goalkeeper Lee Kendal – a
mainstay in the home team for the last five years.
That
counted for nothing as the teenager coolly rounded him to open the scoring.
The
first half had been pretty even, but the visitors were clearly determined not
to lose ground on leaders Llanelli, and their pressure was rewarded when the
experienced Andy Moran shot home from 12 yards after a scramble on the edge of
the penalty area.
Rhyl
continued to press, but a well-organised Haverfordwest defence kept them at
arm’s length. The home team's new keeper, Lee Idzi, was not called upon to
produce any heroics, as one attack after another foundered on the edge of the
box.

Nomads
too late to attack TNS |
|
THE
New Saints made up more ground on the leaders with their fifth straight win as
the Nomads endured another fruitless trek to the defending champions.
But
Ken McKenna's men were again guilty of taking the foot off the pedal after
opening up a three-goal lead inside the hour, with the Nomads sparking some
late scares as they threatened a comeback.
Having
lost their previous nine visits to the Saints, the Deesiders had hoped to
improve the record but found themselves two goals down in 20 minutes. First,
the impressive Luke Holden saw his left wing cross turned in the at the far
post by Mike Wilde.
Alfie
Carter then made it two with his seventh league goal of the campaign as he
broke through to lob keeper Paul Pritchard, with defender Ben Alston only able
to help the ball into the net.
Holden
again sparked the Saints into action in the second half, feeding Scott Ruscoe
whose low cross was turned into his own net by Gary Pinch on 53 minutes.
But
the hosts eased up and almost paid the price. Substitute Stewart White had the
ball in the net 10 minutes from time only to be ruled offside – a decision
which led to Nomads’ boss Jim Hackett being red-carded from the dugout.

Sherborn
brace seals Aber win |
|
ABERYSTWYTH
Town came from behind with a Luke Sherbon double to clinch the spoils in a
keenly fought, close Park Avenue encounter.
The
young Aber midfielder was man of the match for an all-round performance making
the difference between the sides, with Bangor looking vulnerable when he was
in possession.
After
an even start, Bangor took control and looked set for a half-time advantage,
courtesy of Les Davies’ 25th minute strike. But late Aber pressure saw
Sherbon equalise.
Davies
had earlier missed the first of Bangor’s numerous chances, firing wide from
15 yards on six minutes.
Geoff
Kellaway, given his first Aber start of the season, then fired over at the
other end.
Bangor
finally scored when Aber failed to deal with a long clearance from goalie Paul
Smith, allowing Davies to pick his spot past Aber keeper Richard Morgan.
A
37th minute goal-line clearance from Aneurin Thomas prevented Marc Smyth
doubling City’s advantage, and the miss proved costly six minutes later.
Sion Edwards, otherwise outstanding, played a back pass woefully short,
allowing
Sherbon
to coolly take the ball into the area before shooting past Smith.
Both
sides could have taken the lead within seconds of the restart, Jamie Reed
going close for Aber, and Sion Edwards for the visitors.
Geraint
Passmore then missed half chances for Aber before they notched what proved to
be the winner.
Aneurin
Thomas powerful header was goal-bound until defender Peter Hoy pushed it over
the crossbar for a red card. Hoy’s misery was complete when Sherbon slotted
home the penalty.
There
was plenty of time for City to hit back and they caused Aber anxious moments.
But
the Seasiders held out and could have made the game safe if a late Geoff
Callaway effort had not been blocked by Paul Smith.

Welsh
Premier League round up |
|
Aberystwyth 2-1 Bangor City:
A brace from Luke Sherbon secured all three points for Aberystwyth.
Les Davies had given the
visitors a 24th minute lead. But Sherbon equalised just before the break, and
then slotted home a 55th minute penalty to secure all three points.
Airbus UK 0-1 Carmarthen:
Sasha Walters' late goal for Carmarthen continued their fine start to the
season as they continue to put pressure on Llanelli.
Caernarfon 1-2 Neath:
Andy Hill's injury time winner gave Neath a much needed victory over
Caernarfon.
Brian Showdery gave the
visitors a first half lead, but John Rowley equalised for Caernarfon after 67
minutes. But Hill's late goal gave his side all three points. Neath's Paul
Addo and Caernarfon's Vinny Wealan were also sent off.
Haverfordwest 1-1 Rhyl:
Andy Moran's equaliser rescued a point for his side after Haverfordwest had
taken a 49th minute lead through Nicky Woodrow.
Llanelli 1-1 Caersws:
Llanelli dropped their first points of the season on the day that Matthew
Jones made his football comeback.
Jones was a second-half
replacement for former Swansea midfielder Andrew Mumford but was powerless to
help his side claim all three points.
Things had been going well
for Peter Nicholas' side after Mark Pritchard gave them a 26th minute lead.
But Graham Evans put them level in first-half injury time with a penalty and
that is how the score stayed.
Llanelli stay top with a three point lead.
Newtown 2-1 Llangefni
Town: Llangefni's dismal start to the season continues and the Welsh
Premier League newcomers are now pointless after seven games.
A first-half brace from Marc
LLoyd-Williams secured all three points for Newtown although Chris Jones did
make a game of it with his 44th minute goal.
Port Talbot 5-1 Newi Cefn
Druids: Port Talbot romped to victory thanks largely to Kerry Morgan's
hat-trick. Liam McCreesh and Martin Rose also netted for the hosts with Kevin
Holsgrove grabbing a consolation for Kevin Holsgrove.
The New Saints 3-1
Connah's Quay Nomads: TNS continue to close the gap on the leaders after
their latest victory.
Mike Wilde gave them a 12th
minute lead before goals from Alfie Carter and Gary Pinch secured all three
points. Mark Cadwallader salvaged some pride with a 68th minute goal.
Welshpool Town 0-3
Porthmadog: Porthmadog claimed their first victory of the season with an
impressive win over Welshpool Town.
Two goals from Paul Roberts
and a last minute effort from Carl Owen secured all three points for Clayton
Blackmore's side.

Every

|
NEW SAINTS
manager Ken McKenna believes his side’s quest for a record-equalling fourth
successive Welsh Premier title will be their most difficult challenge yet.
Ahead of
this afternoon’s testing visit of Connah’s Quay Nomads, McKenna, whose
side scraped an injury time 1-0 victory at Porthmadog midweek said, “It’s
going to be really hard to win the title again this season.
“I feel
clubs are getting fed up with us winning the league so often and they see
playing us as their cup final.
“Porthmadog
were fantastic against us and deserved something from the match, but I have to
applaud my players for battling until the final whistle.”
New striker
Ronnie Morgan broke down again in training this week so will miss Nomads’
visit and John Toner will be absent for around six weeks following a hernia

Ridsdale
offers to quit Cardiff |
|
Cardiff chairman Peter Ridsdale
has offered to quit the club because he is fed up with abuse from supporters.
He confirmed to BBC Wales he
feels he is being driven out by fans who he says want former chairman and
owner Sam Hammam back in charge of the club.
"I am getting more stick
for saving Cardiff City than I did when things went wrong at Leeds," said
Ridsdale.
"If the fans want Sam
Hammam back in charge, as many of them are telling me, then maybe they should
have him."
Former Leeds chairman
Ridsdale, who openly talks to supporters and hands out his mobile number,
said a number of abusive texts have pushed him to the brink.
Some have called for the
return of Hammam, with one text saying: "We want Sam Hammam back."
Ridsdale offered his
resignation at a board meeting but was unanimously turned down by the club's
directors.
"Right now, I feel like
walking away," he said. "The future for the football club would be
bleak, maybe even liquidation.
"Do I want to do that?
No, I really am passionate about what's happening.
"Am I being driven away?
Yes. I believe I am."

Ponty
old boys in a return to Ynysangharad |

PONTYPRIDD
Town face up to four of their players from last season when Dinas Powys make
the trip to Ynysangharad Park tomorrow.
Dinas
travel to Ponty in the MacWhirter Welsh League Nathan Car Sales Cup (2pm
kick-off).
It has been
a tough start for Pontypridd and their new manager Mal Camilleri, who has
taken on the task of rebuilding a team which broke up during the summer
because of financial difficulties.
Four of the
Dinas players were in the Pontypridd squad as they pressed for promotion last
season and they are Geza Hajgato, Danny Street, Nathan Hosgood and Chris
Ashley.
All made
the switch to Dinas Powys’ Murchfield home for the new season.
Dinas Powys
also welcome back 2006-2007 player of the year Ricky Morgan, now back in South
Wales after a coaching stint in California.
There has
been a departure from Dinas Powys, though, with John Herniman leaving the club
by mutual consent.
Gareth

Hulse
laments the loss of Brewerton |
|
SECOND-PLACED Rhyl look like
having to face danger side Haverfordwest County in far-off west Wales today
without experienced pair Lee Hunt and James Brewerton.
Striker Hunt completes his
three-match ban today but Brewerton had to come off after collecting a knee
injury in his recuperative run-out with the reserves against Glan Conwy in
midweek and is doubtful.
“It never rains but it
pours,” said boss John Hulse. “Just as it was looking as if James would be
back in contention he gets this set-back. We’re hoping it was just one of
those niggling knocks and won’t prove too serious but I’m not expecting
him to be fit in time for the Haverfordwest trip.”
Brighter prospects surround
Jimmy Kelly, who has resumed training and is a strong contender for a return
today, as Rhyl look to keep maximum-points leaders Llanelli in their sights
after securing a 2-1 win over Newtown last Tuesday.

Swans
boss Martinez takes swipe at Leeds |
|
SWANSEA
CITY boss Roberto Martinez has added extra spice to today’s big Elland Road
showdown by criticising the controversial decision to take Leeds United into
administration at the end of last season.
Leeds took
a 10-point hit after being relegated from the Championship, hoping that the
slate would be wiped clean before their League One campaign.
But Leeds
were then docked 15 points for breaching Football League insolvency rules –
and Martinez insists what happened at Elland Road at the end of last season
was “not fair play.”
“It
sounds a bit away from football when you try to send your club into
administration on the very last day of the season,” said Martinez.
“Boston
did exactly the same thing and it’s something that’s trying to find a gap
in the rules.
“We’re
always talking about fair play and sporting behaviour and I don’t think that
goes along those lines.”

Bangor
looking for away success |
|
BANGOR City’s Nev Powell is
likely to opt for an unchanged line-up at Aberystwyth today, hoping to
maintain the excellence of the 5-1 Tuesday trouncing of Newi Cefn Druids.
“We played well, won with a
bit of style and could have got a few more goals, which was all very
satisfying,” said City’s manager.
“We have a number of young
lads in the team and confidence is important to them, to go along with their
obvious ability – and the mood is really upbeat right now.
“We have been playing well
at home but our away form and results must be improved.
“Aberystwyth have a nice
big pitch where we can express ourselves.”
Successive Bangor sides have
fared well at Park Avenue – and Powell said his side will target three
points again.
Teenager Michael Johnston,
who has created a significant presence in the heart of City’s defence since
his arrival from Tranmere, is expected to start again.
But Lee Webber’s knee
injury means he may not be risked, while Kieran Killackey has shrugged off an
ankle knock.

Wrexham
"We’ve got
a manager thank you" |
|
YES, I know Jose Mourinho’s
free, but we’ve got a manager thank you.
And I think we’ve all got
to remember that.
I’ve even seen fans on message boards
drawing up lists of people they’d like to take over the club, but this is
all too premature.
We’ve had a bad start to
the season – I think that’s evident to everyone (not least Big Bri) –
but we are only five games into a very long season.
Against Rotherham we were
clueless, but things did pick up against Macclesfield.
Silvio Spann seems to be a
good signing, while Mike Carvill showed well in his first start of the season.
We’ll have a back four for
today’s game, and a certain Juan Ugarte.
No one polarises opinion like
the man from Sociedad at the moment.
He’s been injured for two
years, but last season he was inexplicably given a two-year deal.
Since then all we’ve had is
a few reserve matches from him and many think he has been an expensive
mistake.
However, we all know that a
fully-fit and goal-hungry Juan Ugarte can be a formidable weapon.
He’s had a bad knee injury,
but as long as he can still run about, he can get you goals.
It doesn’t matter if he’s
lost pace, because he never had much anyway.
Juan is a fox in the box, and
you’d hope he’d still have the fitness to do that.

Bay
boss taking
nothing for granted |
|
ALTHOUGH Colwyn Bay have already
beaten Kidsgrove Athletic at home this season, Seagulls manager Gary Finley is
expecting a tougher test when his men visit the Stan Brown Stadium for a
return Unibond Division One South clash this afternoon (kick-off 3pm).
Eleven days ago goals from
Neil Black and John Boardman earned the Bay a 2-0 victory over the
Stoke-on-Trent outfit at Llanelian Road, but Finley knows that result does not
guarantee a repeat success today.
“No two games are the
same,” said the Colwyn chief. “Just because we beat them at home it
doesn’t give us a divine right to another three points, but if our
organisation and attitude is good there is no reason why we can’t produce
the right result.”
Bay remain unbeaten in all
competitions this term, a run of nine matches which has lifted them to third
in the league and landed them a glamour trip to Blue Square Conference North
outfit Barrow in the FA Cup second qualifying round.
“The longer the run goes on
the more it becomes a pride thing with the lads that they want to keep the
record going,” added Finley.
“We’re really pleased the
way things are going, but it’s only nine games into the season – it’s
very early days.”

Pennock
mystified at Steelmen's poor start |
Port Talbot manager Tony Pennock
acknowledges he is mystified at his team's poor start to the campaign.
The Steelmen languish in the lower regions of the top flight with just five
points from their opening six matches.
This includes a 1-1 draw at home to Welshpool on Tuesday night, despite the
fact that the visitors were reduced to nine men when Geraint Windsor and John
Keegan both saw red.
Tomorrow, Town host Newi Cefn Druids and Pennock wants nothing less than a
home win.
"I was disappointed we failed to seal victory against nine men and Paul
(Reid) and myself are trying to put our finger on why it happened," he
said.
"A draw at home is not sufficient. We have to go for three points against
Druids.
"There have been few changes from last season's squad but we have so far
failed to gel. I want the players to express themselves and I want it to
happen sooner rather than later."
Illness forced Craig Hanford to miss the Welshpool encounter, but it is hoped
he will recover in time to help his side secure what would be only their
second victory of the campaign.

Martinez
set for tough test against Leeds |
Roberto
Martinez comes face to face with old pal Gus Poyet at Leeds tomorrow believing
Swansea City will not face a tougher test all season.
Poyet was a senior pro when Martinez was a youngster coming through the ranks
at Real Zaragoza in the early 1990s.
They will be reunited at Elland Road, where former Uruguay star Poyet is
assistant boss to ex-England player Dennis Wise.
And Martinez
has warned his team that the two ex-Chelsea midfielders will send out a side
primed to chalk up a club-record equalling seventh straight victory.
"I played with Gus at Zaragoza," smiled the Swansea boss, "and
I think you would have got long odds then on us being in opposite dugouts in
League One now.
"Gus is a winner and I know he will pass that on now he is a coach.
"He has had a very, very successful career and he will have a huge
influence on the Leeds players.
"The way he is, and the way Dennis Wise is, they'll treat every game as a
final.
"They'll make sure everyone knows they won't accept second best and
they'll not allow anyone to underachieve.
"And the fact that they come into this game with six straight wins behind
them means Leeds will have even more belief. I can guarantee you it's going to
be a massive test for us."

Financing
Rhyl’s ambitions is no joke |
|
PETER PARRY sighs. Rhyl’s
President has heard this one before, a well-worn joke among football chairmen.
How do you make a man a millionaire? You take a multi-millionaire then place
him in charge of a football club.
“It doesn’t have to be
that way,” responds an unimpressed Parry. “Not if the club is run
responsibly.”
Nevertheless, bringing
stability and success to Belle Vue has not been achieved without great
personal expense to the former Lilywhites captain.
A decade after a brain
haemorrhage claimed his playing career – and almost his life – at the age
of 22, Parry walked through the doors of a club facing its own battle for
survival.
In the seven years since
taking the helm of an outfit fighting relegation and financial ruin, the
self-made millionaire has established Rhyl among the Welsh Premier’s elite,
while redeveloping a ground now the envy of the division.
It is a spell which has
included a first league title for the club – in 2003/04 – and four
consecutive seasons of European football. Figures are never discussed, but the
club’s biggest backer is unequivocal about the key feature in Rhyl’s
revival.
“Make no mistake, first and
foremost it is about money,” said Parry, who insists that the spending is
not about to be halted.
Not if he is to achieve a
list of ambitions for Rhyl which include usurping TNS as the dominant force,
improving the club’s record in European competition and establishing Belle
Vue as the FAW’s identified 3,000 seater ground in the North.

New
manager is no fairytale for Garw |
|
IT was a
case of new manager, same kind of result for Garw.
That was
the harsh conclusion when the managerial reign of Mike Colcombe got underway

There was
to be no fairytale story for Garw in the cup despite giving it their best shot

However,
there were some positives last week to be drawn from the dire situation at

The
Lancashire-based Swansea University student has re-signed for Garw, and the

Colcombe is

County
are on a revenge mission |
|
NEWPORT County boss Peter Beadle
is asking for more of the same from his troops as they get ready to take on
the most frustrating side in the Blue Square Conference South tomorrow.
The Exiles entertain
Braintree at Spytty Park (kick-off 3pm) hot on the heels of their superb
victory over Eastleigh on Tuesday.
The game is something of a
revenge mission after Braintree did the double over County last term, but
patience may well prove to be key.
Braintree are so defensive
they make high-flying Lewes look like Brazil and Beadle is prepared for a
tough afternoon.
He explained: "Braintree
is a difficult game, although we know what to expect from them, they will come
here and defend in numbers.
"They'll be set up with
a 4-5-1 and it is down to us to break them down and to probe and keep the
ball.
"I think the worst thing
you can do is come to Spytty Park and defend, but that is what I expect from
them.
"What I expect from us
is more of the same!
"I have asked the boys
to get back to basics and work incredibly hard and in the last two games they
have done just that."
The Exiles are boosted by the
return of striker Craig Hughes, who has shrugged off a stomach bug, but Ian
Hillier is suspended.

Jones
set for Saturday debut for Reds |
|
Matthew
Jones is 90 per cent certain he will make his Llanelli debut in Saturday's
home clash with Caersws (2.30).In a sensational twist, the former Welsh
international has been told by his insurers that he is allowed to play
professionally in Wales.
It has emerged that the documentation filed following the payout he received
after announcing his retirement through injury three years ago rules him out
of playing professionally in England and Scotland - but not Wales.
It is a huge boost for Jones, and he will now concentrate on becoming a
full-time member of Peter Nicholas's squad.
That could come as early as Saturday, should he come through
training with flying colours this week.
"It's the news I've been waiting for," said Jones. "I want to
play on Saturday - that is what I am aiming for.
"I am more than 90 per cent confident I will play on Saturday if the week
goes well.
"It is a bit of luck that the Welsh system was not included in the
details, but it allows me to play and I can't wait."

represent the villagers again - ending his six year stint and 160 game spell
at Caersws.
"It's a shame because obviously I rate Colin Reynolds as a top player but
we will not be standing in his way," confirmed Barton.
"With the Welsh Premier transfer window closed until the New Year there
will be no move to another Welsh Premier club but we have received seven days
notice from Carno.
"When those seven days have expired Carno will be free to talk to Colin
and I have no plans to persuade him to change his mind.
"I would like to thank Colin for his efforts and wish him well for the
rest of his career."
Reynolds is regarded as one of the top players in the Welsh Premier having
captained Newtown to two runners-up spots during 312 games with the Robins
from 1992 to 2002.
Reynolds also represented both clubs in European competition - 1996 and 1998
with Newtown and in 2002 with the Bluebirds.

Reds
move 3 points clear at the top
|
|
LLANELLI
moved three points clear of Rhyl at the top of the
Welsh Premier following a workmanlike 2-0 victory over
Neath Athletic at Llandarcy Park last night.
The
game was won in the first half, Rhys Griffiths bagging
a brace to take his season’s tally to seven courtesy
of a penalty and a firm header.
A
trip by Carl Jenkins led to the spot-kick award in the
28th minute, while, seven minutes later, Andy Legg’s
cross earned Griffiths his brace.
In
the second period, Neath showed their growing
confidence in the higher level with a 20-minute
bombardment of the Llanelli goal, but to no avail.
Fellow
newcomers Llangefni Town lost their sixth successive
top-tier encounter when they went down 2-1 to
Caernarfon Town at Cae Bob Parry.
The
visitors went ahead through Mark Thomas in the 16th
minute, Kevin Lloyd (22) levelled from Dylan Owen’s
supply, but Bobby Jones settled the issue 11 minutes
later. Llangefni were unlucky to be twice denied by
the woodwork in a spirited display.

More
home gloom for City
|
|
CARDIFF
CITY last night crashed to their third consecutive
Championship defeat at Ninian Park leaving manager
Dave Jones with some serous questions to ponder about
his side’s home form.
It
was Watford striker Darius Henderson who grabbed both
the Hornets goals to propel his team back to the top
of the table.
A
rain-sodden evening was only briefly brightened for
frustrated City fans by striker Jimmy-Floyd
Hasselbaink scoring his first goal for the club,
indeed the first league goal any Cardiff player has
managed at Ninian Park so far this season.
One
could say the result was hard on Cardiff, who enjoyed
the lion’s share of possession and stroked the ball
fluently and with some style for long periods.
But,
again, their defensive frailties let them down for
both Watford goals. Lapses in concentration at the
back are becoming a habit for City and one they must
break quickly if the division’s pacesetters are not
to pull away from them.

Difficult
draw for Gwent pair
|
| THERE
were mixed fortunes for Gwent clubs in the
second-round Welsh Cup draw with Newport YMCA and
Croesyceiliog handed particularly difficult tasks on
October 6.
YMCA
took their unbeaten run to a fifth game on Saturday
with a 2-0 home first-round win over Gwent rivals
Gotyre, but must now entertain high-flying MacWhirter
Welsh League Division One rivals Cambrian &
Clydach.
The
Rhondda Valley outfit have won all six league and cup
matches this season, although they are currently
without a manager following the resignation of Neil
Foulks for personal reasons.
"It'll
be a big test for us, but one we are very much looking
forward to," said YMCA boss Mark Coldrick.
"All you can ask for in a cup tie is a home game
and we're delighted to have got that."
Croesyceiliog
are finding life tough this season because of
unavailability of many first-choice players, although
they received a huge tonic last Saturday by travelling
to knock out Troedyrhiw 7-3.
Now,
however, they must make the trip west to meet former
top-flight club Afan Lido, who are unbeaten in five
league and cup outings.
"That's
a toughie," exclaimed Croesyceiliog joint manager
Chris Evans. "They are a good side at home,
although I'm sure we'll be able to give a fair account
of ourselves down there."

Stadium
switch turns spotlight on Arms Park
|
|
THE
departure of the Blues leaves significant question
marks hanging over the future of the Arms Park.
When
the rugby region move to the new state-of-the-art
stadium on the outskirts of the capital in 2009 the
city-centre venue will remain the home of Cardiff RFC,
the Welsh Premiership side who attract regular crowds
in the region of 1,000 supporters.
Cardiff
RFC currently have a 15-year lease for use of the
stadium, but it seems impossible the club will be able
to sustain itself in the Arms Park for any significant
length of time.
The
club will inevitably move to another location in
Cardiff, with the facilities where the Welsh rugby
squad currently train in Sophia Gardens being strongly
linked.
The
land on which the Arms Park stands is owned by Cardiff
Athletic Club and it is they who must make a decision
over the future of the historic venue.
The
land was originally donated by the Marquis of Bute
with a covenant that it be used for sporting purposes,
but the fact it is one of the prime pieces of real
estate in the Welsh capital could see that
interpretation stretched to the limit.

Nine-Man
Welshpool gain point against Steelmen |
|
Nine-man Welshpool produced a
determined second-half rearguard to return from the Remax Stadium with a
valuable point.
A first-half header from Brett
Jefferies had the mid Wales men contemplating their fifth win in a row, but the
complexion of the encounter changed following a double dismissal after the
break.
Defender Geraint Windsor was
the first to go on 53 minutes after picking up his second booking, and 13
minutes later the Pool back line was further depleted when John Keegan was given
his marching orders after picking up two bookings.
Lee Surman levelled matters for
the Steelmen with a close range effort on 70 minutes but Pool, with all thoughts
on defence, held firm at the back to ensure they returned home with a
hard-earned point.
The visitors had led after just
six minutes when a Ross Stephens corner was headed into the net by Brett
Jefferies.

Old
Gold win west Wales derby |
|
Carmarthen Town moved up to the
third in the table after a 2-1 home win over Haverfordwest in a match refereed
by Richie Winter from Dublin.
In an excellent flowing game
former County striker Tim Hicks put Town ahead on 35 minutes after he started
and finished the move. Having headed out from defence to Nathan Cotterrall who
made ground, Jamal Easter saw his shot parried but Hicks, who had ran the length
of the field, fired in the rebound.
Earlier County's Jon Coates'
volley hit the top of the bar for the Bluebirds and on the stroke of half time
Gareth Elliot's headed effort also rattled the woodwork. Following the break the
visitors put Town under pressure as Lee Hudgell's shot was parried by Neil
Thomas and the striker also saw a second goal-bound effort scooped out by the
Town keeper.
With the game ebbing and
flowing County equalised with a cracking goal when Hudgell got between the Town
defence and Thomas to volley home sub Chris O'Sullivans cross on 81'. But, Town
had the final word when sub Sacha Walters rose above the defence at the far post
to power home Nathan Cotterralls cross in time added on.

Swans
are comeback kings again |
|
Andy Robinson's thunderous
25-yard drive gave Swansea a comeback victory against Cheltenham at Whaddon
Road.
Ashley Vincent's tidy
finish put the home side ahead on four minutes, Andy Lindegaard almost doubling
the lead before half time.
Jason Scotland brought
Swansea level five minutes into the second with a composed finished.
Swansea's second-half
dominance finally paid off when Robinson cut inside and fired a drive into the
bottom corner.
The visitors continued to
create chances in the final 20 minutes, but they needed a fine save from
goalkeeper Dorus de Vries to deny former Swans striker Paul Connor.
Swansea's win came at a
cost, though, as Robinson and Leon Britton picked up hamstring injuries.

Cup
reward for Saints |
|
MERTHYR
SAINTS will have a chance to secure another major scalp in the second round of
the Welsh Cup next month, writes Chris Smart.
Their
2-0 victory over Cwmbran Town was the only real shock of round one on Saturday
and the Saints’ reward for that excellent success is a home tie against cup
holders Carmarthen Town.
There
are just two all-Welsh Premier battles on October 6 and both are in the north
where Porthmadog entertain Welshpool and Connahs Quay Nomads host The New
Saints.
Brymbo,

Rhyl
on rise after victory |

RHYL moved
level on points with Welsh Premier leaders Llanelli following a nervous 2-1
victory over Newtown at Belle Vue Stadium last night.
Stuart Graves
put the Lilliwhites in front inside 29 seconds and David Cameron’s 31st-minute
cross was met by Craig Jones, who buried the second.
The Robins
fought back in the second period and Craig Moses pulled one back on the hour.
The visitors
had Damien Daniels sent off late on.
Champions the
New Saints, had to wait until injury time before securing a 1-0 triumph at
Porthmadog, Phil Baker heading home after Marcus Orlik and Gareth Parry had both
hit the woodwork for the hosts.
There was
another dramatic finish at Carmarthen when Sacha Walters fired home in injury
time to give the home side a 2-1 victory over Haverfordwest.
Earlier, Tim
Hicks (35), had given Carmarthen the lead before Lee Hudgell (81) levelled.
Welshpool
finished with nine men at Port Talbot – Geraint Windsor and John Keegan both
red-carded – but still managed to hang on for a 1-1 draw. Brett Jefferies
netted for Pool in the sixth minute, Lee Surman equalising 20 minutes from time.
Connah’s
Quay Nomads inflicted a first league defeat of the season on Airbus UK.
Nomads went
ahead on 33 minutes through a 55-yard, wind-assisted effort by Chris Williams
but were battered in the second half as the Wingmakers piled on the pressure,
with Gareth Owen striking the post from a 20-yard free-kick.

WALES have
gained a significant leap in the FIFA World rankings.
John Toshack's men have risen 21 to 53rd place as a reward for ending the

England

Wins
over Israel and Russia saw England up to ninth, putting them back in the top 10
for the first time since June.
They
also edge ahead of Group E rivals Croatia who have dropped four places to 10th

Barry

BARRY
Town travel to Llanwern for the final Welsh Cup second round tie tomorrow
evening.
The
Dragons travel to play fellow MacWhirter Welsh League team Llanwern at Newport

Barry,
managed by Gavin Chesterfield, have lost only once in their first five Second
Division League matches and face a Llanwern team who are placed just above them

Owner
Stuart Lovering has predicted this term will be Barry’s best in four years

Swansea City pair Owain Tudur
Jones and Darren Way are set to make their return from injury on Tuesday night.
Jones and Way have been
missing for almost a year, but after a long absence the pair return in a
friendly against Cheltenham at Port Talbot.
"It is a very
exciting time for me, to step onto the pitch again," said Jones.
"It is nice to be
back involved with the lads training and I'm thoroughly looking forward to
it," added Way.
Jones' promising young
career has been hampered with knee injuries over the past couple of years.
His re-habilitation has
included flying over to America to see specialist Dr Richard Steadman.
And now midfielder
Jones, who has been involved with the Wales squad, is ready to resume his
career and get back on the pitch.
"It has been quite
a lonely year for me in terms of my footballing career and am just looking
forward to getting back into the swing of things," said Jones, 23.
"I want to get my
match fitness together, get sharp and cause the manager a headache and force
my way back into the side."
Midfielder Way suffered
a shin injury last October and after 11 months out is also relishing a return

Porthmadog seeking a boost

|
PORTHMADOG, anxious to break
their duck after six attempts, tackle champions The New Saints tonight.
“We are getting
stronger, the mood in the dressing room is upbeat and we have shown in the past
that we can compete with the best,” said player-manager Clayton Blackmore.
“Against Airbus UK on
Saturday, we were victims of some dubious decisions by the officials. Losing to
a couple of late goals was heartbreaking for the lads, who had worked so hard.
“What we all need is a
huge boost and that would come from a win against the odds when we take on
TNS.”
Manager Ken McKenna admits
The New Saints still have plenty of work to do if they hope to challenge for

“We’re still not

Rhyl

|
RHYL manager John Hulse will
again be without key player Jimmy Kelly for tonight’s game against Newtown at

“I’m hoping he will be

But better news for Hulse
is that striker David Cameron has completed his three-match suspension and looks
set for a welcome return.
He and strike partner Lee
Hunt were among the six absentees at Caernarfon as they serve out respective

Another defender, Martin

Bangor are smarting after

Thompson:
I’m hungry to restart my career |
|
CARDIFF
City comeback hero Steve Thompson admitted he was fired up for his surprise
return to action at Plymouth on Saturday.
The
former Rangers striker got the late equaliser that earned the Bluebirds a 2-2
draw at Home Park having been out since the summer with a groin injury.
"I’ve
been doing an awful lot of work in rehab and was able to come back earlier than
scheduled," said Thompson, talking to Cardiff City World after scoring at
Plymouth Argyle.
"I’ve
been doing double and treble sessions with physio Sean Connelly and fitness
coach Alex Armstrong and right now I feel stronger than I have ever been.
"I
was pleased to score, but maybe even more pleased just to be out there playing.
"I
had only been training with the boys for five days, but the manager asked me if
I could be involved against Plymouth.
"He
felt I could do a job coming off the bench. I scored, which was great, but I was
also pleased with other parts of my game, particularly heading and making a

Shaw
& French give Neath historic win |
|
Two
second-half goals in a 13-minute period from Carl Shaw and Richard French saw
Neath chalk up a historic first Welsh Premier home win against Llangefni at
Llandarcy Park. Shaw headed home a corner midway into the second period, then
with 10 minutes remaining former Port Talbot Town striker French drilled home a
low shot from 18 yards.
There was early indication that the North Wales outfit could pose a threat when
frontrunner Chris Jones, a recent signing from Caernarfon Town, shook off the
attention of Lee Bevan just outside the Neath penalty area but the Neath player
regained his composure to prevent Jones from picking out the unmarked Chris
Evans.
Neath could have gone ahead midway into the opening half, but French shot just
wide of the upright. Then
a Jarrod Price header scraped the top of the crossbar, after a French cross had
been deflected into his path by Mark Jones.
Eleven minutes before the turnaround Andy Hill picked out Price at the far post,
and the former Llwydcoed player drove in a close-range shot, only for it to be
blocked by visiting keeper Simon Williams.
Just before the interval Neath had a narrow escape when Darren Hughes's cross
just eluded Richard Hughes.
Seven minutes into the second half, Bevan sent in a terrific header from eight
yards, with Williams reacting instantly from a Rees corner kick to deny Neath
the lead.
Neath sent on Shaw for Price on 63 minutes and four minutes later he put his
side in front
A quality corner from Rees saw Shaw score with a fine header from six yards .
Llangefni's Dylan Owen then hit a post before Neath made the game safe on 80
minutes.
Carl Jenkins linked with Shaw and then French, on an overlapping run, finished
superbly from the edge of the penalty area - his shot finding the bottom corner
of the net.
Neath manager Andrew Dyer said: "Thankfully we've at last managed to get
the home campaign up and running, but it was not easy with Llangefni coming here
to try to frustrate us.
"We've kept a clean sheet, being pretty solid throughout the 90 minutes and
at the end we could have possibly scored another two goals."

New
Saints must improve |
|
CHAMPIONS
The New Saints are starting to rise from the wreckage of a disastrous start to

Manager

end,” he said.
“We
should have had five or six, but it’s another three points. But we will need
to improve if we are going to challenge again this season.”
A
defensive error led to Saints’ opener in the 25th minute, the ball falling
kindly to Alfie Carter, who stroked home his sixth goal of the season.
Seven
minutes later, Michael Wilde left two visiting defenders in his wake to double
the lead, but former Swansea City striker Chad Bond (44) hit back for the

Welsh cup round up |

MERTHYR
Saints caused the one significant upset of the first round of the Welsh Cup
yesterday when they sent former Premier League side Cwmbran Town crashing on to
the sidelines.
Following a goalless opening half the Saints, who play in Division 3 of the
MacWhirter Welsh League, scored twice through Chris Lewis and Chris Duggan to
earn their place in the next round.
Goytre United carried their league form with them into the Cup when they
overwhelmed Pontardawe 3-0 thanks to goals by Michael Waters, Steve Conaty and
Luke Bowen.
Dinas Powys who have made a sparkling start to their league campaign were far
too good for Penrhiwceiber and ran out comfortable 3-0 victors with goals by
Jason Cowan, Nana Baah and Shelton Payne.
Bridgend Town, after a poor run of four defeats on the bounce, arrested their
slide by defeating Garden Village 3-1, Ryan Jenkins bagging a brace of goals and
Dale Raven getting the other.
Bryntirion were the latest side to inflict misery on struggling Pontypridd as
they romped into round three with a 6-1 success, Robbie Walters getting five of
their goals.
Llansawel battled bravely against high flyers ENTO Aberaman but had to play
second fiddle in extra time and went down 5-2 after the sides had been level
following 90 minutes play.
Maesteg Park, below strength, required extra time to put out Seven Sisters 2-1.
It had been 1-1 at the end of 90 minutes but Maesteg managed to get the winner
through Michael Nessbert.
The much travelled Dean Beniamous scored twice for Cwmamman United in a 3-0
victory over AFC Llwydcoed, while Carl Smitham and Jonathan Keaveney netted for
West End, beating Bettws 2-1.
Welsh League First Division leaders Cambrian & Clydach had their work cut out in
overcoming Pontyclun 2-1. Sean Thackrell and Darren John were on target for
Cambrian.
Gavin Bennett scored twice for Taffs Well as they put out Caldicot 3-2, and
Christian Orchard grabbed a brace as Ton Pentre overcame Aberbargoed Buds 3-0.
Cardiff Corries needed penalties to put out Tredegar Town while Llantwit Fardre
overcame Ely Rangers 4-1 with the help of a hat-trick by Ryan Prosser. Elsewhere
there were victories for Newport YMCA, Croesyceiliog, Caerau Ely and Caerleon.

Steve Thompson salvaged
a point for Cardiff with an 89th-minute equaliser.
Sylvan Ebanks-Blake twice pounced

comeback on 70 minutes when he tapped in after Paul Parry's low shot was

Swansea were being booed by some sections of their own support with 10 minutes
remaining and the Cumbrians leading 1-0.
But within seconds Darryl Duffy ended his long search for a first goal of the
season - and two minutes later Paul Anderson curled home his third of the
campaign to send the Liberty into raptures.
The moans and groans were long forgotten as Swansea snatched a first home league
success of 2007-8 at the third attempt.
"It's a real test of character when you go behind like we did," Martinez said.
"We all know there are huge expectations at this club and that can work against
you in a situation like that.
"But I was really proud of the way the fans and the players reacted. The players
kept on playing, they stayed patient even though they were trying to break down
a side with 10 men behind the ball.
"And the fans stayed with them. If there was some frustration you could
understand it because we are all human, but I didn't notice it if there was."
Martinez claimed Duffy's strike was his third of the season after the Scotsman
finally broke his duck.
"I consider Andy Robinson's first goal at Walsall to be Darryl's because it hit
his belly on the way in, and he also gets the credit for one against Millwall
which went down as an own goal," Martinez said.
"And the winner was definitely Paul Anderson's. When Andy Robinson finds out the
Tannoy announcer gave it to him he'll probably be claiming it, but it was Paul
claiming it in the dressing room."
One blow for Swansea last night was an injury to Joe Allen, whose full league
debut was cut short by a worrying knee ligament injury.

Welsh Premier League round up |
|
Airbus UK Broughton 2-0 Porthmadog:
Airbus inflicted Porthmadog's fifth straight defeat of the season with two
second-half goals. Gareth Owen scored the first on 65 minutes and James McIntosh
made sure with a 90th-minute effort.
Caernarfon Town 0-1 Rhyl: Andy Moran's
68th-minute strike gave Rhyl three points at the Oval - keeping them within
three points of leaders Llanelli and sending Caernarfon to their first league
defeat this season.
Haverfordwest County 6-2 Connah's Quay Nomads:
Nicky Woodrow and Lee Hudgell both scored twice as Haverfordwest ran riot
against Connah's Quay. The visitors had taken a 17th-minute lead through Ryan
Durham's own-goal, but Christopher levelled a minute later and the home side did
not look back.
Neath Athletic 2-0 Llangefni Town: Neath won the
battle of the Welsh Premier League newcomers as they claimed their first points
since the opening weekend of the season. Carl Shaw (66 minutes) and Richard
French (78m) were on target.
Newtown 0-1 Carmarthen Town: Nathan Cotterrall
struck on 83 minutes to snatch the three points at Latham Park.
The New Saints 2-1 Port Talbot Town: The Saints'
revival continued as they recorded their third victory in a row. Alfie Cater and
Mike Wilde gave the home side a lead after 32 minutes, and they held on in the
second half despite Chad Bond's 44th-minute reply.
Welshpool Town 2-0 Bangor City: Two second-half
goals gave Welshpool their fourth win in a row. Ross Jeffries (56m) and Chris
Venables (69m) increased the pressure on new Bangor boss Nev Powell as his side
crashed to a three straight defeat.

Wrexham remain at rock bottom |
Wrexham remain rooted to the
foot of the Football League following a second successive defeat in front of
their own fans at the Racecourse this afternoon.
In a dour clash of very few chances, Rotherham defended strongly throughout and
snatched all three points through substitute Chris O’Grady’s 77th minute goal.
Looking very rusty following a two-week lay-off, the home side took a long time
to settle into any sort of rhythm, but with manager Brian Carey wanting a big
performance from his experienced players, it was youngsters Simon Spender and
Matty Done who stood out.
Spender made several crucial interceptions at the back and Done posed a constant
threat with raids down the left, although too often his final delivery lacked
any real menace.
Dragons keeper Anthony Williams was kept busier than his United counterpart, his
job made easier by a couple of poor efforts from Marcus Bean, but there wasn’t
too much to enthuse a disappointing crowd.
Wrexham made a change at the break, Matt Crowell in his first senior outing
since January replacing an out-of-sorts Mark Jones in a bid to beef up the
midfield.
It was the visitors, though, who picked up the pace and Peter Holmes spurned a
great chance, heading wide from six yards and Williams then had to make a fine
save to deny Steve Brogan.
Another change saw Chris Llewellyn replace Done and the Wales international hit
a superb shot that was turned over his bar by Andy Warrington.
But United went ahead with 13 minutes left, Andy Todd bursting through to set
the ball up for Chris O’Grady to fire home from close range.

Casual County collect 3 Points |
|
COUNTY won a decanter against
a Sutton side struggling at the wrong end of the table.
Newport are yet to produce
the exhilarating form of last spring but a record of four goals conceded in
eight games has given them a solid base from which to launch a promotion
challenge.
Jason Bowen nodded them in
front in the 22nd minute with his fourth goal of the season.
His score cane after Julien
Allsop beat the Sutton defence to head on a Damon Searle free kick.
County were casual at times
but a red card for Sutton’s Lewis Gonsalves early in the second half - following
two cautions for the defender - scuppered the south London club’s hopes of
revival.
County missed some chances
with substitute Charlie Griffin and manager Peter Beadle acknowledged that his
side made hard work of their win.
But he added he was content
with the outcome.
“I asked for an increased
effort and collectively I’m reasonable pleased with the team,” he said.
“But we are yet to play as
well as we can.”

Martyrs’ bite hits Bitton |
|
WITH everyone tipping western
outfit Bitton for a giant-killing over Southern League premier division side
Merthyr, one could have been forgiven for thinking that the Martyrs would get
off to a nervous start.
But Merthyr raced into a
two-goal lead inside 13 minutes to stun the hosts.
Darren Davies struck first
with a free-kick on eight minutes before Matthew Harris placed a superb second
five minutes later.
The Martyrs peppered the home
goal and corner after corner bombarded the keeper’s six-yard box.
The home side went close with
one effort but the visitors were back in control when Harris struck his second
goal and Merthyr’s third, again from 20 yards.
Jon McAlinden reduced the
arrears for Bitton but their hopes were short-lived when Craig Stiens grabbed
Merthyr’s fourth on 55 minutes.
The final goal was a penalty
converted by Mike Meeker after Dale Griffiths had fouled the same player inside
the box.

Reds
stay top with win over Aber
|
|
Llanelli maintained their
unblemished record to stay top of the Principality Welsh Premier League
courtesy of a solitary Mark Pritchard strike.
The Reds were not at
their convincing best at Stebonheath on the night, but the return of Andy
Legg for the hosts meant that the former Welsh International controlled
the midfield. The goal came when ex-Swansea City striker Mark Pritchard
took advantage of a lapse in concentration by Matthew Roberts at the far
post and when the diminutive striker got a touch to it, the ball lobbed
over Richard Morgan in the Aber goal.
The match marked the
first game of the season that star striker Rhys Griffiths failed to score
in, whilst Aber's own key forward Jamie Reed failed to make an impression
as a lone striker. Wales' Semi Professional Manager Tony Pennock was
watching the game as he prepares for the selection of his first Under 23
squad and with a goal this evening, Pritchard would have made an
impression.

Late
strikes earn Swans victory
|
|
Two late goals in two
minutes from Darryl Duffy and Andy Robinson saw Swansea seal a comeback
victory.
The home side dominated
the first half, but wasteful finishing from Duffy, Robinson and Jason
Scotland cost them.
After the break Leon
Britton tripped Jeff Smith to concede a penalty, Danny Graham converting
from the spot.
But a saved Robinson shot
fell to Duffy who got his first of the season from a narrow angle, then
Robinson deflected in a fine, curling Paul Anderson shot.
The win was Swansea's
first at the Liberty Stadium this season.

Big
day for Welsh Premier new boys
|
|
WELSH
PREMIER newcomers Llangefni Town and Neath Athletic meet today seeking
springboards after difficult starts to their campaign.
The
North Wales visitors are pointless after four matches and Neath have
secured just three points from an opening-day victory at Porthmadog, so
the importance of the game is not lost on either manager.
“We
have played Connah’s Quay, Carmarthen, Rhyl and Llanelli, so we have
been thrown in the deep end,” said Llangefni boss Adrian Jones. “But
my lads have not lost their belief, they will be battling until the final
ball of the season.”
Llangefni
are buoyed by the availability of Kevin Lloyd, Keith Hughes and Craig
Hogg, who returns following 12 months out. But Danny Glyn Roberts, Farai
Jackson and Adie Jones are out and skipper Graham Austin faces a late
fitness test.
Neath
are without the suspended David D’Auria, who was sent off at Rhyl.

Fowler
tipped to storm back to best

CARDIFF
CITY boss Dave Jones is expecting Robbie Fowler to storm back to form just
like his former-Liverpool team-mate Michael Owen.
After
recovering from a serious knee injury, Owen has returned to regular action
for Newcastle and England, firing five goals already this season,
including a brace in his country’s midweek win over Russia.
Following
his arrival at Ninian Park in the summer, 32-year-old Fowler has been
fighting for match fitness.
He
overcame a thigh strain to figure for 90 minutes in the Bluebirds’
Carling Cup victory over Leyton Orient and lasted an hour in City’s win
at Norwich two weeks ago.
Fowler
is yet to find the net for his new club and put in a muted performance at
Carrow Road. But he looks set to partner Jimmy Floyd-Hasselbaink up front

WPL has
to make room for young talent
|
|
BRIAN COYNE believes there
is a dearth of young talent in the Welsh Premier.
The Aberystwyth boss
celebrated more games at the helm in the Welsh top flight than any other
manager last weekend when his Green and Blacks beat Newi Cefn Druids 1-0.
Having led both Cwmbran
Town and Newtown into Europe – the latter during a 10-year stint at the
club which ended in 2003 – Coyne is well placed to give his opinion on
how the league is progressing.
But Coyne reckons the
Welsh Premier will suffer if it doesn’t attract more quality youngsters
into its ranks.
“The big thing for me
is that if you look at the other teams in the league, a big percentage of
them seem to have the same players they’ve had for four, five, six years
– some even longer than that,” said Coyne.
“When we played Newi
Cefn Druids on Sunday the two best players on the pitch were Timmy Edwards
and Aneurin Thomas, who’ve both been playing for years.
“I think there’s some
good young players in the league but I’m not sure they’re in any great
number.
“If you look at the
likes of Colin Reynolds, he’s still going strong at Caersws – guys
like these have been going for 10, 12 years and I’m not sure whether the
young players are coming through in the numbers that are needed to push
the league on.

The former Afan Lido and

Wayne Davies signed him
in 2003 and he scored 10 goals in 58 appearances for the club while on
dual registration with Goytre and Neath Athletic. The transfer window for
the Welsh League closes on the 24th October while the Welsh Premier League

NEWI Cefn Druids enjoyed an
emphatic victory against a struggling Caersws side, who were humbled 4-0.
Mike Heverin was the star of the show for the home side as he grabbed an
impressive hat-trick, whilst Chris McGinn got his first for the club.
Heverin opened the
scoring on seven minutes before McGinn doubled the advantage six minutes
later. The match was almost over just after the half hour when Heverin got
his second and he got to take the Match ball at home in the 90th minute by

Aber
looking to carry winning run against Reds
|
|
Seasiders
face league leaders in confident mood having claimed two successive wins
ABERYSTWYTH Town boss
Brian Coyne is looking for his players to maintain their momentum, as they
bid to become the first side to take points off Llanelli this season. Yet
Coyne, who has now chalked more games as a manager in the Welsh Premier
League than any other boss, will be under no illusions as to the size of
his team’s task at Stebonheath Park this Friday.
Llanelli are all set to
provide a massive challenge, having won all five of their league and cup
matches this season, culminating in a 5-1 demolition of newcomers
Llangefni Town. However, Coyne, who surpassed the record set by ex-Caersws
manager Mickey Evans, by being in charge of his 523rd Welsh Premier match
last weekend, will certainly not be overawed by the challenge.
The Scotsman has stressed
that the pressure will be off his players, and his side will take heart at
having already defied the odds this season, by smashing five goals
against TNS. “Llanelli are absolutely flying at the moment,” commented
Coyne. “Nobody will give us a chance, but when we played TNS, the
bookies were giving 7-1 odds on us winning then. “While Llanelli may be
firm favourites to beat us, our lads will really be looking forward to the
game.
They are enjoying their
football, and can go into the match with confidence.” Coyne, who has
also managed Newtown and Cwmbran Town, had reason to be satisfied with his
side’s hard earned draw against an experienced Newi Cefn Druids on
Sunday. “We knew it was going to be a very tough match, and that we
would have to work hard to grind out a result against perhaps the most
experienced side in the league,”

CAERSWS manager Mike Barton
could unveil his crop of new signings in tonight's (Friday) clash at Cefn

The Bluebirds manager has
snapped up several new players after a winless start to the season.
Midfielder Sion Meredith arrives from Penrhyncoch and Mike Sawtell will
boost the defence after switching from Llangefni Town.
Midfielder Andy Davies has also signed after missing the opening month of
the season.
Fellow new arrival Darren Leonard misses the trip to Plas Kynaston through
suspension, while Nathan Prodger is struggling with a knock picked up
against Welshpool.
Barton said: “We have virtually a full bill of health for the trip to
Cefn Druids and we must be confident of getting a result. The 3-0 scoreline
against Welshpool Town last week flattered the opposition but we must not
be despondent and focus on getting things right.”
Meanwhile Market Drayton Town midfielder Paul McMullan has rejected a

DARREN Ryan's plan to make
Latham Park a fortress faces its sternest test yet when Carmarthen Town

“Carmarthen are a top team and Deryn Brace is one of the top managers
in the league,” said Ryan.
“The match will pose our most difficult of the season so far but
confidence in the camp is high and we will certainly not be overawed by
Carmarthen.”
Striker Tommy Mutton is eligible following his 11th hour switch from
Bangor City where he struggled to make an impact.
Mutton links-up again with former Connah’s Quay Nomads team-mate Danny
Jellicoe who is back to fitness.
Richard Williams-Cooke returns to contention but midfielder Mattie Lewis
is a doubt with an ankle injury.”
Meanwhile the Robins’ bid to bring veteran defender Colin Reynolds

Striking
Dilemmas for Hulse and O'Shaughnessy
|
|
When Rhyl meet fellow
high-flyers Caernarfon Town at the Oval on Saturday in a North Wales
Coast derby, the two sides are both missing two key front-men
through suspension. John Hulse's second placed Lilywhites now have
star striker Lee Hunt out through suspension following his dismissal
against Neath last weekend, whilst fiery Scot Dave Cameron is also
on the sidelines as he sees out the last game of his suspension
following his sending-off at Belle Vue against Llanelli.
Things don't get
any better for the Canaries boss, Steve O'Shaughnessy either as his
deadly duo of former Vauxhall Motors double-act Paul Addo and Chris
Noone are also suspended for the match on the weekend. The loss of
the two goal-scorers from the home side's line-up, is a massive blow
as they have both been revelations since joining the club. Addo was
one of the main reasons that kept the Cofis up in the League with
his excellent scoring record towards the end of the season, whilst
new kid on the block Noone, has bagged four goals in four League
games for his new club since signing on the eve of the Big Kick-Off.
The Caernarfon boss
will now have to chose which of John Rowley, Bobby Jones and recent
capture Dave Ojapah, brother of Canaries winger Timmy Ojapah, will
start up front against the Lilywhites. Only Rowley has made a League
start for the club and with him scoring already twice this campaign,
he is likely to get the nod with the latter two battling out for the
other starting place.
O'Shaughnessy also
has the option to hand a League debut to another new boy, teenage
defender Kevin McGarry (17) who arrived from Tranmere Rovers last
week.

Swan's
Duffy eager to end goal drought
|
|
Darryl Duffy is hoping
to finally get his first goal of the season when Swansea take on
Carlisle at the Liberty Stadium on Friday (19:45 BST).
The Scottish
striker has yet to score since making his move from Hull permanent
in the summer.
"It's been
really frustrating," said Duffy. "Five games into the
season now and I've not got off the mark yet.
"But I'm quite
a slow starter in league campaigns. I've always been that way, but I
don't know why."
Duffy says he is
not too concerned about his lack of goals as long as other
team-mates are getting them.
"I've always
come good in the end and I'm confident the goals will start to
come," he said.
"But Jason
[Scotland] is coming through one of those spells at the minute
where he's got the golden touch.
"Every time he
comes on the pitch he looks like he's going to score a goal or he
does score.
"As long as
one of the two of us are banging in the goals and we're winning the
games, then we're quite happy."
And a win is what
is vital as the Swans continue the search for their first league win
at home.

WELSHPOOL Town continue

Welshpool Town spokesman Wyn Jones said: “Bangor City always

Bluebirds
boss Jones facing reshuffle
|
|
Cardiff boss Dave
Jones is facing a defensive headache ahead of Saturday's trip to
Plymouth with Darren Purse out and Glenn Loovens also a doubt.
Purse, 30, picked
up an infection after surgery to repair cartilage damage in his knee
two weeks ago. And Loovens, 23,
has had a recurrence of a foot injury he suffered last year.
"Every injury
you have is always a frustration," said Jones. "That's why
we try to get more depth within the squad so we can cover the
injuries."
Purse was
expected back in training on Monday and available for the visit to
Home Park.
But Jones said:
"He got an infection [an abscess] after the operation he had,
so he had to go in to hospital and put on a drip and antibiotics
to clear it up, so that's a big disappointment.
"He probably
won't join us until next week if the infection clears up.
"We are
waiting on Glen Loovens who has had a re-occurrence to the foot
injury he had last year, so we will see if that settles down.
"Last year
it was very difficult for us. This year it is a little bit easier
because of the depth that we have in the squad so no matter what
you've got, you've still got to put a team out, and the team that
I put out I will be confident with."
And Jones is
hoping his side will make it a hat-trick of wins on the road this
season as they look to build on their strong start away from home.
"All that
happened was because of the home games we lost we had to go away
and win to keep within the pack," he said.
"It means
you're confident when you go away. We know we should be two or
three points better off. You always look at it.
"As long as
we stay in the pack and we can get a run of games and a little bit
of continuity and stability from now, then hopefully we will be
the ones that jump out the pack because nobody is at the moment.

Home is
where the points are for Wrexham
|
ANTHONY WILLIAMS today
insisted Wrexham must turn The Racecourse into a fortress.
Goalkeeper Williams
wants an air of invincibility to surround The Racecourse in order to
make it a place where not only away teams fear – but a place where
Wrexham rarely fail.
The rallying cry comes after Wrexham slumped to the bottom of the
Football League following Accrington Stanley's 4-1 victory against
Grismby last weekend. The Reds were not in action because their
match against Rochdale was postponed due to international call-ups.
"Every successful club has a fortress at home and that is what
we need to develop here at The Racecourse," Williams said
today.
"Obviously you also need to have good form away from home but
the main basis of where you are going to finish in the league comes
from your home form."
Wrexham's last home match was a disappointing 2-0 defeat against
Hereford and the players were booed off the pitch at the final
whistle.
However, Williams is adamant that everyone understands the
performance levels against the Bulls were far from acceptable and
after a two-week break he said the players are aiming to put things
right when Rotherham come visiting on Saturday.

Legg
happy to back at Stebo

Andy
Legg has clocked up considerable mileage during an illustrious career, but
he's still prepared to put in the hard yards. The former Welsh international
is back at Stebonheath Park for his third stint with the Reds following his
resignation as player-manager of Blue Square North side Hucknall Town.
Despite joining the English club to be near his family home in Nottingham,
Legg admits he could not resist having another go with the Reds.
The 41-year-old has already had two stints with the Reds - at the beginning
of last season and for a one-off appearance in this season's Intertoto Cup -
and he's looking forward to the task ahead.
So much so that he turned down offers from a couple of Blue
Square Premier clubs.
"It's good to be back," Legg admitted.
"The set-up here is fantastic and the staff really look after their
players and the fans are positive.
"The players are a good bunch. They are a close group and I'm glad to
be a part of it again.
"Peter Nicholas was straight on the phone when he heard I resigned from

Jones
can't wait for Reds debut

|
Matthew
Jones admits he can't wait to make his Llanelli debut after signing
non-contract terms before Monday night's transfer deadline. The Welsh
international signed terms for his hometown club before the closure of the
transfer window and is now officially part of Peter Nicholas's squad.
He will also hold a consultant's role to build commercial opportunities.
The 27-year-old will not feature in tomorrow's Welsh Premier League clash
with Aberystwyth at Stebonheath Park. Instead he will be unveiled to Reds
fans prior to kick-off.
But Jones, who returns to the game despite retiring through
injury three years ago, is relishing his return to the pitch.
"I have missed the game so, so much and to have the opportunity to play
again is wonderful," said Jones, who won 13 international caps.
"When I was a kid, Stebo was like Wembley to me and it is still a very
special place.
"I've played in the Premiership, Champions League and at international
level, but the motivation is there to play in the Welsh Premier League.
"When I was told I wouldn't play again that was shattering. This gives
me an opportunity to do the thing I love.
"In the summer I spoke to my surgeon and physio and they gave me the
all clear to play - so three years on, I'm on the fringe of playing
again."
Jones added: "I have been fortunate enough to play at the highest level
and I will always treasure those memories.
"But now I am looking forward to playing with the Reds - my hometown
team.
"I just want to get my boots back on and gain some satisfaction and put
a smile on my face and that of the supporters."LS

Bangor
Chairman says "come on board"

BANGOR City Football Club
chairman Ken Jones has invited local businessmen to join the club in an
exciting venture into the future.
The Principality Building Society Welsh Premier club is moving to a new

people to push the future of the club.
"The club has a history second to none in Welsh football but now it is
time to make the most of this great opportunity," said the City
chairman. "The club has enjoyed a period of stability for the past
couple of seasons, and has a huge
fan base and flourishing
supporters association who have representation on the board.
"We now have a manager whose lives and breathes Bangor City following
an illustrious period at Farrar Road as a player."
Farrar Road has seen many great footballing occasions over the years, and
their exploits against AC Napoli in 1962 is the stuff of legends in soccer
circles.
Regular forays into European competition has seen the club wear the badge of
Bangor with pride and distinction. Arch soccer rivals Rhyl have shown what
can be achieved with the right people involved and Jones is determined to
bring back the glory days to the club at Nantporth.
"This is a massive opportunity for a young, enthusiastic business
person to be involved in this new venture which is guaranteed to raise the

Hey
Amigo Orlandi makes good start
|
|
Colin
Pascoe has backed Swansea City's third amigo to be a real hit at the club
after shining on his debut. Spaniard Andrea Orlandi made his first appearance
in Swansea colours in the reserves' Pontin's Holiday Combinations defeat at
Swindon.
And reserve team manager Pascoe gave Orlandi - the third Spanish signing under
Roberto Martinez - a glowing report.
The former Alaves and Barcelona man made some useful contributions in front of
Martinez and assistant Graeme Jones.
"He looked very comfortable on the ball and showed some lovely
touches," said Pascoe.
"He doesn't speak a lot of English but the Spanish lads can help him
along. Football is an international language, so I don't expect that to be
much of a problem."
Orlandi arrived in South Wales offering options in any position down the left
flank, which will provide Swansea with an extra option.
Pascoe believes Orlandi can settle into British football without any problems.
"He is a tall lad with great feet and he will give Roberto plenty of
options down the left," said Pascoe. "He looks comfortable in any
part of the pitch which is pleasing for a coach.
"He has an eye for goal and can also thread through some neat passes. I
was impressed by what I saw.
"He also took a few kicks from the opposition but he showed great
attitude in getting up unfazed and getting on with it.
"There are certain aspects we have to work on with him and time will tell
what kind of contribution he will make, but he looks a good prospect."

Bellamy
the ace with five-star show
|
|
IF
John Toshack didn’t know the importance of captain Craig Bellamy to his
Wales side after the sterile weekend performance against Germany, he does now.
The
scowl on Toshack’s face on Saturday was replaced by a wide smile as Bellamy
– who had missed Germany’s 2-0 win in Cardiff to be with his ill new-born
daughter – was at the heart of a Wales performance to cherish.
Having
survived a shaky start to gain some much-needed revenge against Slovakia,
Wales scored five away goals for the first time since thumping San Marino 5-0
in June 1996
It
also gave Wales a first competitive away win in nearly two years, since
Northern Ireland were beaten 3-2 in Belfast.

Carey:
We must get off league basement
|
|
WREXHAM boss Brian Carey warned
Rotherham they will feel the heat of a backlash at the Racecourse on Saturday.
The Dragons boss said nothing
less than a win would do as his side look to get off the bottom of the
Football League.
But he insisted there was no
panic despite Wrexham propping up the League Two table following the
international break.
Carey said yesterday: “We
absolutely want to get ourselves off the bottom of the league on Saturday.
“The league table doesn’t
make good reading, but what we mustn’t do is panic.
“We’ve got to just hold
our nerve and take the game to them with a high-tempo, high energy game.”
Mark Jones is due to report
to Wrexham’s Colliers Park training ground this morning after returning home
from Wales duty with a virus – although it is unclear as yet whether the
midfielder will be fit to play on Saturday.
Carey said: “He’s still
on antibiotics so we’ll have to assess how he is in the morning.”
Matt Crowell scored as he and
striker Juan Ugarte helped Wrexham beat Northern Ireland under-19s 4-1 in a
friendly yesterday.
The two senior players, plus
first-year professional Wes Baynes, joined the Dragons’ youth team in the
match at Lilleshall.
Midfielder Crowell hit the
top corner with a strike from long range as he and Basque striker Ugarte
completed another 60 minutes of football each.
Both are on their way back to
first-team action after long-term knee injuries.
The rout was completed by Tom
Matischok and two goals from Obi Anuruo.

MacLean
in a City vow
|
|
STEVE
MacLean has vowed that the battle to oust Robbie Fowler and Jimmy Floyd
Hasselbaink from the Cardiff City team will intensify when he regains his
fitness.
The former
Sheffield Wednesday hitman is out for at least another two and a half months
after damaging ankle ligaments in a reserve game against Bristol City last
month.
But he
insists there will be no let-up when he returns.
“As soon
as I am fit my entire focus will be on earning me place in the starting
line-up,” says the former Rangers and Sheffield Wednesday player.
“I will
fight tooth and nail to be out there – and when I get the chance I will
score goals.”
Meanwhile both Fowler and
Hasselbaink are likely to start when the Bluebirds resume their Championship
campaign at Plymouth Argyle on Saturday evening (5.20pm).

Brace
praises Towns spirit
|
Carmarthen Town boss Deryn Brace
hailed his side's battling qualities after they claimed a 1-1 draw against
Caernarfon.
Town battled back from a goal down to claim a share of the points, a result
that leaves them ninth in the Welsh Premier table after their opening four
matches.
Brace, who left the field after suffering a cut to the head, said: "I'm
quite relieved more than anything because we didn't play well.
"Having said that, we created quite a few second-half chances. But this
is the poorest we've been in the league this season.
"They had the better of the first half and we clearly had the better of
the second. The only way they were going to beat us was by hitting us on the
break, but it did look for a time as if we couldn't break them down.
"While it would have been hard on them and a fantastic result for us if
we had won, we didn't deserve to lose either. In the end a draw was most
probably the fairest outcome."
Town coach Mark Aizlewood felt his side had created enough chances to have
claimed all three points.
"We've had a couple of decent results but we maybe forgot to do the
basics. That's what wins games.
"They were organised but didn't unduly trouble us. They used the long
ball and had some pace up front.
"But in the second half we created some decent chances - enough to win
the game - and we need to make sure we perform for 90 minutes, not 30 or 45.
"We're now in a position that the players on the bench are recognised
Welsh Premier players. We have a decent squad and therefore quality
substitutes and that makes a big difference to a side."

Johns
decision to leave angers Beadle
|
|
LEE John sensationally quit
Newport County and re-signed for Welsh Premier outfit Port Talbot just 69 days
after joining the Exiles.
However, John's decision to
leave the Exiles has upset and angered manager Peter Beadle.
Boss Beadle admitted he is
astonished by what has happened.
He said: "I am very
disappointed, I worked tirelessly to bring Lee to the club and we did
everything in our capabilities to make it easy for him to settle in.
"Lee has told us the
issue is his job, but they have some very long away trips in the WPL and I
don't really see what the difference is.
"We feel he's taking a
step down in terms of his football career and it is hard to swallow. We got
him on a two-year deal so he could adjust and become a big player for us.
"His job was discussed
when he signed and we were assured it wouldn't be a problem, but now it is. I
have my own theories, I think some players take the option to have an easier
life and don't want to test themselves.
"I stick by my decision
to sign him and I am very disappointed because I think he could be a very good
player at this level. But we'll move on and if the right player comes along I
will now be able to do something."

Savage
takes new swipe at Toshack
|
|
Controversial midfielder Robbie
Savage has launched another blistering attack on Wales manager John Toshack.
The pair fell out in 2005
when Toshack informed Savage he was no longer part of his plans for the
national side.
And Savage insists Wales are
now even further away from qualifying for a major international tournament. "There's more chance of
me flying Concorde to the moon blindfolded than there is of him taking Wales
to the South African World Cup," he said.
Speaking to the Daily
Mirror newspaper he added: "John Toshack told us to judge him after the
European qualifying games. The truth is we have gone a long way backwards.
"I do hope he doesn't
start the 'we'll make it to South Africa' stuff because that would be
utterly ridiculous and we all know it."
Wales face Slovakia at 1730
BST on Wednesday, having lost to Germany 2-0 on Saturday.
Their hopes of qualifying
for the European Championships are effectively over.
And Blackburn Rovers
midfielder Savage believes Wales have gone backwards under Toshack's
management.
"I do hope we aren't
going to get a load of stuff about how Wales will qualify for South
Africa," he said.
"It's not going to
happen and as a Wales fan I'm as dejected as the rest of the nation.
"Only 25,000 turned up
for a qualifier against one of the world's best teams - that tells you
everything."
Savage feels it is time for
a change and, although he admits his own international career is over, he
reckons that his former international team-mate and current Real Sociedad
manager Chris Coleman should get the job.
He said: "I think the
time has come to make a change at the top and Chris Coleman has to be a
candidate.
"He did well at Fulham
and is a young man with ideas. We need that because we can't go on as we
are."

Martinez:
Early break could prove vital
|
|
Roberto
Martinez believes his Swansea City side are refreshed and raring to roar up
the League One table after their early-season break. Martinez pulled the plug
on the trip to Cheltenham scheduled for last Friday because three of his squad
members were away on international duty.
But the key reason for postponing that game was to give his players a weekend
off.
"We needed to give everybody a rest," said Martinez.
"It was something that was really needed after a very
busy period of football and I'm sure we can step up the intensity more than
ever now.
"After so many games in August, and especially with the rules in the
Johnstone's Paint Trophy which stopped us freshening things up, this little
break has been perfect.
"We've had a mini pre-season where the boys have been able to work on
certain things and it has set us up perfectly for a demanding September."
The 10-day stretch without a fixture has also allowed Marcos Painter time to
recover from the foot injury which has sidelined him since the second week of
the season.
The former Birmingham left-back has returned to training and could be in
contention to return against Carlisle on Friday.

Coleman
warning for fans
|
|
CHRIS
COLEMAN has called for patience amongst Real Sociedad fans amid speculation he
is already facing the bullet as coach of the Spanish club.
Coleman’s
team have lost two of their opening three matches in the Spanish second
division and face a tough clash away to Las Palmas this weekend.
The Real
fans expressed their displeasure with Coleman in traditional Spanish sporting
manner ... by waving white handkerchiefs during the team’s 1-0 home loss to
Polideportivo Ejido at the weekend.
Coleman’s
men had also lost 2-0 to Castellon in their previous home encounter, when
murmurs of discontent first started, and they have dipped towards the bottom
of the table.
But
Coleman, tipped by many as a future Wales manager one day, insists the fans
have to bide their time and remains adamant he can turn the team’s fortunes
around.
And he
emphasised that the great old Real Sociedad days under John Toshack, when the
team thumped Real Madrid 4-0 in the Bernebeu and also won the Spanish Cup,
have gone.
Today’s
team is nowhere near as good, Coleman emphasised, and supporters had to be
more realistic with their expectations.
Coleman was
a shock choice as Real Sociedad coach, after Wales boss Toshack turned down
the opportunity to manage the club for a fourth time.
While he
understands the frustrations among the fans following the team's indifferent
start to the season, Coleman insists there us no quick-fix solution as he
looks to build a team capable of winning promotion back to La Liga.

Cambrian,

Neil

Davies
puts revenge on the Welsh menu
|
|
SIMON
DAVIES wants to put the record straight against Slovakia by avenging the
defeat which ruined Wales’ Euro 2008 hopes.
The
crushing 5-1 loss to the Slovaks in Cardiff last October put a huge dent in
Wales’ qualification ambitions and Davies is hoping to settle the score when
the two sides meet again tomorrow night.
The Fulham
midfielder is also hoping it will help them forget a dismal performance on
Saturday when they subsided 2-0 to Group D table-toppers Germany.
“We’ve
just about got over it,” he admitted. “It’s a new week and we have a new
game to look forward to, all we can do is go out there and try and do better.
“The
early goal really killed us off and the Germans just went into a class of
their own. They outclassed us and really gave us a lesson.
Davies
still has a bitter taste in his mouth from Slovakia’s Millennium Stadium
romp and he expects a far closer contest in Trnava tomorrow.
“We owe
them one,” he stressed. “The last result at home was obviously
disappointing to say the least.
“To lose
5-1 at home is not nice and it’s not nice to look back on, so hopefully we
can go out there and do better for ourselves. No one saw it coming. We had a
couple of good results before it and we were really looking forward to the
game.

Bay
must land first blow

COLWYN Bay manager Gary Finley
wants to see his side strike first when they entertain Kidsgrove Athletic
tonight (7.30pm).
The Seagulls are unbeaten and
lying second in Unibond Division One South, but have had to come from behind
to get results from their last three matches.
The latest recovery act
happened at Alsager on Saturday, where the Bay fought back from an early
deficit to claim a thrilling 3-2 victory.
"We can't keep leaving
ourselves with too much to do," said Finley. "I've got every
confidence we can keep coming back, but it would be nice to see us score first
tonight.
“We're still showing signs
of naivety at the back and that's something we need to address."
But Finley admits he could
not be happier with his team's high-scoring start to the campaign which has
left them the only undefeated side in their division and guided them into the
second qualifying round of the FA Cup.
"We're on a good run. It
means a lot to the lads and we want to keep it going," added the Colwyn
chief.
Finley reports no injuries
ahead of tonight's clash at Llanelian Road.

Lee
John back at the REMAX
|
|
The good news for all Port
Talbot fans is former favorite Lee John has been transferred back to Port
Talbot on transfer deadline day.
The fee to re-sign John is undisclosed,
their Chairman stated “We are delighted to
have Lee back at Port Talbot Town”, beamed Chairman Andrew Edwards. “His
influence on our side over the last few years has been immense. We were
extremely disappointed to lose his services to Newport County in the Summer
and his importance to our side can be shown in our desire to bring him
back”.
The
reason behind Lee John leaving was his lack of first team opportunities as he
was rarely used by Newport manager Peter Beadle.
Steelmen boss, Tony Pennock,
who described selling John in the first place as 'probably the hardest thing
I'll ever do as a Manager'
"I'm so delighted to
have Lee back. I'm disappointed for him and Newport that his move didn't work

"He's a terrific lad and
an outstanding player so he'll be a great asset again for us" he added.

Port
Talbot's poor form continues

|
THE small
band of supporters who turned their backs on Wales’ World Cup rugby

This was a
dire encounter with neither side looking capable of breaking down packed

The best
opportunity fell to Port Talbot striker Martin Rose, but he fluffed his lines

Man Caernarfon still unbeaten in the league

CAERNARFON
finished with 10 men, but still maintained their unbeaten league record thanks
to another goal from Chris Noone, who is proving one of the captures of the

The

the ball past Neil Thomas in the home goal after being set up by Layton

Thomas and showed great presence to battle his way into the heart of the
defence before toe-poking the ball into the net.

One
goal from Aber enough to sink Druids

AN early
Gareth Hughes strike was enough to give the Seasiders the points at sun

The hosts

Aber should

Beadle
gets tough on County players
|
|
DESPITE an improved away
performance, Newport County boss Peter Beadle has ripped into his
under-performing side, writes Michael Pearlman.
Boss Beadle was not a happy
man after Friday's Blue Square South draw at Bath City, and has let his squad
know in no uncertain terms that he expects a big improvement - soon.
He explained: "The
performance was not good enough and not acceptable, reputation means nothing
to me.
"Results will come if
performances are right and at the moment we can't learn to cope with what is
thrown at us.
"I thought we defended
poorly against a very one-dimensional team, and until Friday defending had
been our strength this season.
"I thought we looked
ragged, but Bath were so predictable we always knew what was coming and we
still didn't deal with it.
"We knew they were a
threat from set pieces and we conceded from one, disappointing, we're too
nice.
"We've put a very good
squad together, our best for a few years, but if they don't want to go out
there and are not prepared to put it all on the line it means nothing.
"Reputations mean
nothing in this game, you have to earn respect and at the moment we are not
earning it. We should be one of the most feared teams in the league and at the
moment we are nowhere near to being that team."

Poor

THE margin
of defeat may be a little unfair on the Martyrs as they were in this game
until four minutes from full-time, but, by the same token, this was probably
Merthyr’s poorest display of the season so far.
Disjointed
by a late arrival in the New Forest they gifted their hosts an opener aafter
eight minutes, Ryan Moss allowed the freedom to sprint through the defence.
But, after
a poor first half Merthyr looked more purposeful after the break and it was
the home side’s turn to ride their luck as Michael Jones and Marcus

price as the hosts scored through Richard Gillespie after 86 minutes and
Jeremy Tarr on 90.

Earnshaw’s
plea for place in starting line-up

ROB
EARNSHAW has outlined his dismay at being overlooked for John Toshack’s

Earnshaw
hinted strongly afterwards that he believes Toshack should have picked him as

Instead,
Earnshaw said he was left bemused as Toshack opted to pick Cardiff midfielder

Earnshaw,

The Welsh

showdown with Porthmadog.
The Bluebirds deserved their
2-0 victory after dominating Porthmadog throughout and scoring in each half.
Midfielder Neil Thomas opened
the scoring with a scorching 20-yard shot that gave keeper Joe Sagar no
chance, and Lee Hudgell supplying the left wing cross for Phil Catlin to score
at the far post in the 68th minute.
Porthmadog boss Clayton
Blackmore gave a debut to 19 year-old former Bolton Wanderers player Karl
Luisi, and the Luisi went closest to a goal for Porthmadog only to see his
attempt saved by Haverfordwest's keeper Lee Idzi.
County now move up to 4th in
the league following today's win, a position they have not enjoyed for a few
seasons, but it is fair to say they have not met any team in the top half of
the table either.

City
set to bring in loan signings
|
|
CARDIFF
City are planning ‘emergency loan’ swoops over the next month.
The main
transfer window is now closed until January, but Cardiff City and all clubs
within the English pyramid system can still bring in short-term loan
signings.
Bluebirds’
manager Dave Jones is keen to strengthen with a central defender and,
following the injury to Steve MacLean, a striker.
Jones,
though, is also under pressure to move players out and reduce the wage bill.
Transfer-listed
Kevin Cooper could well go out on loan to find first team football.
Steve
Thompson has confirmed he is hoping to be playing again within a month or so
and that, too, would ease the pressure on Cardiff City in attack. They have
Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Robbie Fowler as a front two, but MacLean’s
injury means there are no players with Championship experience to cover.
Paul
Parry has been used as a stand-in striker – and he’s done a terrific job
including a goal at Queens Park Rangers – while Matt Green and Jason Byrne
are also available.

Monk
revelling in his ‘second chance’
|
|
GARRY
MONK waited a year to do his talking on the pitch – and already it’s
speaking volumes,
When
players are out injured, their stock tends to rise in the eyes of
supporters, their absence is pointed to as an excuse why the team hasn’t
got the win they wanted.
Strangely,
and somewhat unfairly, that wasn’t the case with Monk.
As he
fought his way back to fitness over a long 12 months, the 28-year-old had to
suffer supporters willing to snipe and write off his previous contribution
to a side that had won one promotion and came within a penalty shoot-out of
another.
Then, as
the Swans’ contract saga played out over the summer, there were those who
seemingly couldn’t care whether the former Southampton defender stayed or
not.

Martinez
backing a more mature Ferrie
|
|
Roberto
Martinez has backed Ferrie Bodde to return a more mature man following his
red mist in the defeat to Doncaster Rovers last week. The Dutchman was sent
off for butting Rovers midfielder Brian Stock during their League One clash
at the Liberty Stadium last Saturday, and it proved a significant moment for
Martinez's side.
They had led 1-0 until Bodde's 60th dismissal, with Richie Wellens levelling
seven minutes later before he settled the game with a late volley to condemn
Swansea to their first home league defeat.
With Bodde now serving a suspension, Martinez believes he has learned his
lesson and will be a stronger player for the experience.
"Ferrie felt the responsibility straight away,"
said the Spaniard.
"He is a responsible character and he wants to put that right. His
attitude in training and around the players has been spot on and he will
want to make up for his mistake to his team-mates.
"He let everyone down but I'm sure we will see a more mature and more
accomplished Ferrie Bodde when he returns."
The likelihood now is that Bodde, who has been outstanding for Swansea since
his arrival in the summer, will be targeted by teams as they look to catch
the 25-year-old out.
But Martinez is confident he won't fall foul of the same mistake again.
"Ferrie has come from a completely different type of football - they
interpret it in a different way, whereas in Britain there is more fair
play," he said.
"But it is not an excuse, it was unacceptable. He will be ready should
the same situation arise.

Bangor City 1-2 The New
Saints: Defending champions The New Saints came back from a goal behind
to take all three points at Farrar Road. Marc Smyth gave Bangor a
sixth-minute lead, but Alfie Carter equaliser on the half hour and Mike
Wilde's 68th minute strike gave the visitors their second league of the
season. Martin Beattie was sent off for Bangor 20 minutes time.
Caersws 0-3 Welshpool: Welshpool
moved up to second thanks to their third away win of the season. Chris
Venables opened the scoring in first-half injury time, Ross Jefferies
doubling the lead on 63 minutes and Will Thomas.
Connah's Quay Nomads 1-1
Newtown: Tom Baker put the Nomads ahead on 61 minutes, and Newtown's
prospects looked bleak when Kevin Scott was sent off two minutes later. But
Craig Moses found an equaliser for the visitors moments later and they held
on for a draw.
Llangefni Town 1-5
Llanelli: Llangefni's troubles continue as Llanelli eased to victory on
Anglesey. Rhys Griffiths and Andrew Mumford both scored twice, with Mark

Rush
handed Trust coaching role
|
|
Former Wales and Liverpool
striker Ian Rush has been named as elite performance director of the Welsh
Football Trust.
Rush will assist the
Trust's technical director Osian Roberts to develop the next generation of
Welsh players.
His part-time position will
see him help out with coaching the under-16 regional and national
development squads.
"I am delighted to be
joining the Trust in this exciting new role," he said.
"It is great to have
the opportunity to give something back to the game at grass roots
level," Rush added.
"To be successful on
the international stage in the future Wales must produce better players
through well-structured development programmes and high-quality coaching.
"I believe the Trust
is on track to achieve this and I hope to play my part in helping them to
deliver their vital work for Welsh Football."
Rush's previous coaching
included a stint as manager of Chester, although that lasted less than a
year, and a spell working with Wales' under-17 team as coach.

City
ground 'delayed to May 2009'
|
|
Cardiff City FC's
30,000-seater stadium will not be finished until May 2009, says chairman
Peter Ridsdale.
He had previously said the
team would be playing at the new ground near the existing Ninian Park by
Christmas 2008.
The news comes as the club
faces High Court action by its financial backers Langston, which claims it
is owed £31m.
But Mr Ridsdale told city
councillors neither the club nor stadium was at risk from the legal action,
and the club will file a defence on Tuesday.
The club has claimed it
has until 2016 to pay £15m to Langston.
Mr Ridsdale told Cardiff
Council's economic scrutiny committee that club officials had spent
several hours with lawyers this week preparing the defence to Langston's
allegations.
Responding to a question
from city councillor Michael Michael, a life-long Bluebirds fan, Mr
Ridsdale said he did not believe the club was at risk from the legal
challenge.
Mr Michael said: "He
was fairly constrained about what he could say, but he more or less said
people would be silly not to get round the table and resolve it.
"What he said was
that Cardiff City would be robustly defending when they go to court next
week."

Both

League
is aiming to boost TV audiences
|
|
LEAGUE secretary John Deakin
is to press S4C for more English-language television coverage of the Welsh
Premier.
A new TV deal was announced
last week which will see highlights from the league continue to be screened
on S4C’s Y Clwb Pel Droed programme into the 2008-9 season.
But with no subtitles as
yet on the programme, and with many Welsh Premier clubs attracting large
followings from outside Welsh-language heartlands, Deakin wants S4C to make
more provision for non-Welsh speakers.
“I’m somewhat keen to
ensure that there’s more English-language exposure than there has been,”
explained Deakin.
“I need to talk to the
broadcaster regarding that, given that for the great majority of people in
Wales their first language is English.
“I think the Clwb Pel
Droed programme has been very positive for the league, even for non-Welsh
speakers.
“An awful lot of them
tune in. But for features I see no reason why they couldn’t make some
provision for non-Welsh speakers, perhaps in the form of subtitles.”
Deakin added: “I’m
obviously concerned that non-Welsh speakers are catered for and I need to
clarify certain situations.”

Nev:
We have the talent to beat TNS
|
|
BANGOR City, boosted by their
Loosemores Cup win at Connah’s Quay Nomads in midweek, are upbeat about
tackling champions The New Saints at Farrar Road tonight.
“We will have to be at
our very best to get the result we want, but with the talent in our ranks we
are perfectly capable of pulling it off,” said manager Nev Powell.
“There is keen
competition for places and at Connah’s Quay we brought in lads who had not
played before and they did well in a very pleasing 3-0 win.
“TNS have a tremendous
reputation as the reigning champions and are an outstanding side. They are
always the team to beat.
“I have not seen them
recently but most of their players have been there for a couple of seasons
and they have added to their strength by bringing in more quality.”
Midfielder Gareth Parry
(groin) is Bangor’s only injury doubt because of a persistent groin
strain, but Kieran Killackey (hip) had 70 minutes at Nomads and emerged with
no ill effects.
Two extra additions are
forward Chris Sergeant, a scorer at Connah’s Quay, and keeper Jack
Millward, both secured from Powell’s former club Nomads.

Mixed
news on TNS strike duo
|
|
TNS have been handed mixed
news on two of their long-term casualties, writes John Bridgwater. Strike
duo John Toner and new signing Ronnie Morgan have both missed the start of
the campaign.
While Morgan hopes to
return to training soon following an abductor muscle problem, the club’s
all-time top scorer Toner faces an uncertain few months.
The forward has been
suffering from what was thought to be a groin strain, but it could now be a
hernia problem which will mean at least another six weeks on the sidelines.
Midfielder Steven Beck is
struggling with a hamstring injury picked up last week, but Phil Baker,
Tommy Holmes and Chris King now seem to be back to full fitness.
The Saints are relieved to
have picked up their first points last weekend in the 6-0 win over Caersws
at their new Park Hall ground.
“The most important thing
was that we got our season up and running,” said manager Ken McKenna.
“Last week has now given us a good platform, we’ve just got to hang in
there as it is a transitional period for the club at the moment with the new
ground.
“We’ve had a bit of a
hangover from Europe, but hopefully that is behind us now.”

Martinez
vows to get his man
|
|
Swansea
City are determined to recruit a high-class centre-back when the Football
League loan window opens this weekend. Roberto Martinez's attempts to
strengthen his defensive options before last Friday's deadline for permanent
deals came to nothing.
But the Swansea manager still views a new central defender as a top priority
- and he has not given up hope of landing Darren Moore.
The Derby County defender twice visited the Liberty Stadium in the summer
for talks and is a friend of Swansea assistant boss Graeme Jones, who he
played with at Doncaster.
Moore started the season in the Rams first team, but the
fact he has been on the bench for their last two Premiership games has
increased Swansea's hopes of bringing him to Wales.
However, the 33-year-old's wages, which are way above what Swansea would be
prepared to pay, could prove a stumbling block.

Relish
battle ahead
|
|
NEWPORT County manager Peter
Beadle is relishing the chance to pit his wits against a true icon of the
club tomorrow night.
The Exiles travel to
Twerton Park to take on high-flying Bath City (kick-off 7.45pm) where Beadle
will come head-to-head with John Relish.
Relish, 53, is a real
legend among the Spytty Park faithful after 13 years as a player and four as
a manager.
His superb leadership has
seen Bath achieve promotion in just his second season at the helm and
they've been excellent since joining the Blue Square South, currently
sitting proudly in third spot.
With the added spice of
this being something of a derby for the Exiles, boss Beadle is anticipating
the clash.
He explained: "Friday
has all the ingredients to be a great night of football. The floodlights
will add to the occasion, we are facing a good footballing side and it is a
bit of a derby as well.
"I have watched Bath
twice this season and we are looking forward to the game, John Relish is a
great bloke and the kind of manager you look up to and respect.
"He's been patient
since joining Bath and has done a fantastic job.
"He knows Newport
County inside out."
Beadle is backing his
strikers to start firing again after a stuttering start to the season.
"We are making
progress and have only conceded three goals in six games, but it is in front
of goal we are having problems," he said.

Ex-Wales
defender Stevenson dies
|
|
Former Wales international
defender Byron Stevenson has died from throat cancer at the age of 50.
Llanelli-born Stevenson
played for his country 15 times between 1978 and 1982, adding to his Wales
youth and U21 caps.
He was probably best
remembered for his controversial sending off in Turkey in 1979 where he
allegedly fractured opponent Buyak Mustafa's cheekbone.
Wales' European
Championship ambitions were over and Stevenson was given a four-and-a-half
year European ban.
The suspension and injury
ended his Wales career, but he certainly ended it in style, swapping
shirts with a certain Michel Platini, arguably the world's greatest player
at that time.
Stevenson started his
career at Leeds United in 1972, who were then one of the forces in
European club football.
He made his debut in 1975
and went on to establish himself in the side making 95 appearances before
being sold to Birmingham in 1981, where he played over 100 times.
He later joined Bristol
Rovers in 1985, but decided to retire the following summer aged 29, after
struggling with injuries.
Stevenson made his Wales
debut at the Racecourse in the 1-0 win over Northern Ireland in the
British Championship in May 1978.

Flynn
excited to hit the jackpot
|
|
Brian Flynn is backing Wales
Under-21 stars Aaron Ramsey and Joe Allen to lead their country to glory in
France.
The pair are set to play
together in central midfield for the UEFA Championship qualifier against the
French on Friday (1800 BST).
"I am excited by what
I am seeing from them, it is an eye-catching partnership and both are making
rapid improvement," said Flynn.
"I do not expect it to
be long before Tosh puts them into the senior squad."
Flynn's side have lost
just two of their last 10 games at this level, on the back of a run of 26
games over six seasons without a victory.
And Allen scored the
winner on his debut in the 4-3 win over Sweden last month.
"I am not surprised at
Allen's improvement," added Flynn. "I hear that his Swansea
coaches say the lad will become a Wales legend and I can only echo that.
"People keep telling
me he is too small, but my answer is that he is bigger than me and I didn't
have a bad career.
"He is on a par with
Ramsey and the two are progressing well together through the ranks, and from
my point of view, it's 'bingo', we have hit the jackpot."
The emergence of £1million-rated
Ramsey, 16, and Allen, 17 are still virtually untried at club level with
Cardiff and Swansea respectively.
But Flynn believes the
pairing of the two in central midfield could produce a double act to serve
Wales for a generation.

Blackmore
strengthens his squad with Quartet
|
|
Porthmadog boss Clayton
Blackmore has responded to a poor start to their Season and their
unfortunate injury crisis by signing a quartet of players as the transfer
deadline looms.
With the window shutting at
midnight on Monday evening until the New Year, there should be some frantic
transfer and registration activity within the League and it is the ex-Wales
International who has seen his side struggle thus far, who has been the
busiest.
There are four new arrivals
at Y Traeth today, with only one player who has played within the
Principality Welsh Premier League so far. He is tall defender Adam Docker
who is well known to boss Blackmore as he played under him at Bangor City.
The 21-year old is a former member of Altrincham's reserve squad with
previous experience at Bury. He joined Bangor City in season 2005/6 but
played just 9 (+1) matches for the Citizens. He was released from Farrar
Road at the start of 2007 when Steve Bleasdale took the helm and joined
Unibond outfit Chorley.
Also joining Port is Warren
Beattie a 20-year old midfield player who is a product of the Preston youth
system and was recently on trial at Fleetwood. The Port boss had been
monitoring Beattie throughout the summer, but injury restricted his chances
to see the player in action until last week.
Also linking up at Y Traeth
is Karl Luisi , a striker who was with Bolton at Academy and Reserves level
and Andrew Maitland , who has been with Bradford City previously.
All players, except for
Maitland who has picked up an ankle injury before even kicking a ball for
the club, will be considered for the squad on Sunday, subject to
International clearance, for their home game against Haverfordwest County.

But the League One side

busy midfielder then supplied Andrew Mumford, who buried the third midway
through the second half.

Hartson
poised for Swans move
|
|
WALES
striker John Hartson is set to quit Championship side West Brom and join
home-city club Swansea within the next 24 hours.
The
32-year-old former Celtic star met with Swans chairman Huw Jenkins,
multi-millionaire club backer Martin Morgan and manager Roberto Martinez in
the five-star Morgan’s Hotel in Swansea on Monday and watched the Swans’
home Johnstone’s Paint Trophy clash against Millwall last night.
Swansea-born
Hartson, who scored more than 100 goals in five years at Parkhead, will
initially land at the Liberty Stadium on an emergency loan – the player
then sealing a £12,000 per week permanent deal when the transfer window
reopens in January, the Baggies settling the remainder of the Welshman’s
£1m per year Hawthorns contract.
Receiving
a call from the Swans, the Welsh-speaking ex-Arsenal and West Ham predator
swiftly rejected a firm approach from troubled Nottingham Forest at the 11th
hour last Friday.
Wealthy
controller Jenkins confirmed the swoop saying, “The whole thing has been
going on for a while. We’ve had a recent meeting. We are very hopeful of
things reaching a satisfactory conclusion – although I must stress that
nothing is yet settled.
“We are
reasonably optimistic. John coming to Swansea would certainly capture a lot
of our followers’ imagination – it would be a high-profile capture.”
And a
source close to Hartson insists the attacker wants to return home to fulfil
a lifelong ambition. “John has supported the Swans since his dad Cyril
took him down the old Vetch Field on his shoulders,” the source said.
“He loves the club and wants to fire the goals that would take Swansea
into the Championship. He has longed for the day that he could wear the
club’s shirt.”

Earnie:
I’m the man to shoot down Germany
|
|
WALES
striker Robert Earnshaw has urged John Toshack to let him loose against
Germany on Saturday.
Though
Freddy Eastwood – who scored on his Wales debut in Bulgaria last month –
is likely to get the nod, Earnshaw believes he is the best man to partner
skipper Craig Bellamy.
“I want
to play for Wales and the last couple of games with Craig I feel we’ve
connected,” said the Derby striker.
“He is
a great player and I help him and he helps me when we play together. I think
that has shown recently.
“I
think the performances have been there, but we have just needed that little
bit more luck to get the goals. Hopefully that will come now.”

Swans
take five-goal thriller
|
|
Zak Whitbread's own goal put
Swansea through to the next round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.
Paul Anderson put the Swans
ahead on 16 minutes, tapping in Tom Butler's cross from six yards.
But Ben May levelled
moments later on the counter attack and Jay Simpson put Millwall 2-1 up
after the break, scoring from a tight angle.
Jason Scotland equalised
after the hour before Whitbred directed Darryl Duffy's cross into his own
net.
Millwall were reduced to
10-men in injury time after Jamie O'Hara was sent off for a professional

Group 5
looks the toughest group and Aberystwyth kept their hopes of qualification
to the quarter-finals alive with a workmanlike 2-1 victory at Haverfordwest.
Stuart
Roberts and Gavin Cadwallader gave the Seasiders a 2-0 interval lead, but
Nicky Woodrow made it a tense finish with an 86th-minute response.
Holders
Caersws, who prop up the Welsh Premier, maintained their grip on Group 4
with a handsome 5-1 success at Newtown.
The
Robins took an early lead through Robert James, but Nathan Prodger’s
magnificent second-half hat-trick, plus further goals by Marcus Sharrod and
Tom Reynolds, sealed a famous Bluebirds victory.
Former
Connah’s Quay Nomads manager Neville Powell returned to Deeside College

Chris
Sergeant, Marc Limbert and Sion Edwards were on target for the Citizens,
while a solitary Jay Foran goal earned Newi Cefn Druids a 1-0 home success

In Group

Porthmadog, but the visitors fought back bravely to secure a point via Paul

Don’t
write off our chances yet
|
|
WREXHAM midfielder Danny
Williams is urging fans not to write their season off just yet.
A chorus of boos rang out
around the Racecourse after Saturday’s disappointing 2-0 defeat to
Hereford United and manager Brian Carey himself even admitted he would have
done the same had he paid for his ticket and watched such a dismal
performance.
And already some people
have discussed relegation and Wrexham in the same breath, much to the
annoyance of Williams.
“Apart from Saturday
it’s not been too bad so far this season,” said 28-year-old Williams.
“We lost at Bradford when we shouldn’t have done and at Darlington when
we might not have deserved the win, but we certainly didn’t deserve to
lose.
“The performances
haven’t been that bad and we have played some good football in parts, but
on Saturday against Hereford we got exactly what we deserved from the game.
That was nothing.”
And on the fans showing
their disapproval at the final whistle, Williams added: “They pay their
money and they are entitled to their opinion. And on Saturday they certainly
told us what they thought.

Double
coup for Haverfordwest
|
|
Haverfordwest County have pulled off a tremendous signing as ex-Carmarthen
Town midfielder Tom Ramasut has joined the Bridge Meadow Stadium club and he
will make his debut this evening in the Loosemores Cup match against
Aberystwyth Town at his new home. This is a double coup for the Bluebirds as
their boss, Derek Brazil agreed a new two-year deal at the club on the same
day. The Irishman said;
"I am delighted that we have signed a player of Tom's ability and he will
bring added strength to what, I believe, to be a very strong squad... I would
like to thank the Carmarthen Town manager, Deryn Brace, for his co-operation
in allowing the transfer to proceed swiftly" he added.
Despite attracting interest from full-timers Llanelli on the eve of the
season, Ramasut has made the surprise switch further west and links up with
another former Old Gold player Terry Evans at County. Reds' boss Peter
Nicholas served seven days notice of approach on the ex-Barry Town man and the
creative midfielder didn't feature domestically for the Old Gold this term,
which signalled a move away. However, that switch didn't materialise and he
has now joined Derek Brazil's young squad.
Ramasut was influential in the Carmarthen squad last year, which won the Welsh
Cup in his first and only season at the club, and he made 40 starts for Town
last season in all competitions. After an outstanding first year at the club,
Ramasut would have been a key-man at Richmond Park this year and he was
involved in both European games against SK Brann in the summer.
Ramasut, who has recently turned 30, has played for the Bluebirds before in
the 2000/01 season making 27 appearances and he also made two more the
following season, before transferring to Barry Town, where he won the
Championship. He started his career at Norwich City, but joined Bristol Rovers
following his release from Carrow Road without playing a first team game. He
played for Rovers 42 times before signing for hometown club, Cardiff City in
1998/99. He left Ninian Park, again without playing in the First team and
joined Llanelli, for whom he played eight times, scoring one goal.
After two spells at Merthyr Tydfil, then Haverfordwest and Barry, for whom he
also played in the Champions League, Tom joined Bath City and played just half
a game before switching to Aylesbury United. There, he made a big impression,
whether deployed as a winger or central midfielder, but he left the Ducks as
the club entered turmoil in Christmas 2003. He has also played for Wales at
Under 16, Under 21 and Wales 'B' level.

Pennock
adds two, but issues Warning
|
|
Port Talbot Town manager Tony
Pennock has warned his players they face a difficult season unless they
start taking their chances in front of goal and tighten up at the back
writes the club's Official Website.
"We keep shooting
ourselves in the foot and we are not putting chances away," said
Pennock following Friday's defeat at Haverfordwest. "Two bad mistakes
on the edge of our box cost us and the result was decided by the fact that
they took their chances while we squandered ours."
Two defensive mistakes gave
Haverfordwest a two-goal advantage while seventeen chances on goal at the
other end for Port Talbot, ten of which were on target, were wasted.
"If we don't take our opportunities and stop giving away soft goals we
are going to be fighting a battle this season" was the stark warning.
The side are in action at
league leaders Llanelli this evening in the next round of games in the
Loosemores Solicitors Challenge Cup. Both sides are expected to make changes
although Port Talbot are currently top of the group following their 3-0
victory over Neath.
Two bad mistakes on the
edge of our box cost us and the result was decided by the fact that they
took their chances while we squandered ours
Pennock has strengthened
his squad ahead of the transfer window deadline with the acquisition of
striker Michael Whapham, who is a highly rated goal-scorer following his
performances in the Welsh League for Ystradgynlais and he has also completed
the signing of former Swansea City youth team captain Matthew Thompson who
featured for Llanelli last season and in the Intertoto Cup this year.
Thompson was a regular in
Brian Flynn's Wales youth set-up of over the last few years and the young
midfielder will be looking to make an impression. Whapham had been
Ystradgynlais' top scorer since their promotion to the Welsh League. Both
are expected to feature this evening.

Gavin
offers Rae of hope
|
|
CARDIFF
CITY midfielder Gavin Rae has warned the Bluebirds must play a whole lot
better if they are to even consider promotion to the Premiership.
A
below-par Cardiff came from behind at Carrow Road on Saturday to earn a 2-1
victory thanks to goals from Peter Whittingham and Roger Johnson.
It was a
real smash-and-grab raid as City recorded a second away win in the
Championship (they also triumphed 2-0 at Queens Park Rangers) to help make
up for opening home defeats to Stoke and Coventry.
But
Scottish midfielder Rae said it also showed the resilience that Cardiff are
going to need in an extremely competitive league this season.
“Norwich
was probably the worst we’ve played this season, but it really is all
about getting results,” said the 29-year-old Rae. “As a team we didn’t
play as well as we could have. But these things happen now and again.
“We
know we can play better than that, and we do need to put in better
performances.
“You’ve
got to take the ups-and-downs in the game, as I say, we’ve played better
than that and lost.
“I
thought the lads battled well to get a result and we were delighted with the
win.
“The
good thing was it showed the side has a bit of resilience about it. We were
under the cosh at times against Norwich to be fair.”
On a
rollercoaster afternoon in Norfolk, where many Cardiff players failed to
shine, Rae’s all-action performance was singled out for praise by City
boss Dave Jones after the final whistle.
The Scot
had to spend as much time helping out his over-worked defence as trying to
supply the strike duo of Robbie Fowler and Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink.

CAERNARFON
Town will introduce several newcomers at The Oval tonight when they stage a
Loosemores’ Cup Group One derby against Porthmadog.
As many
as five changes could be made by manager Steve O’Shaughnessy, as he bids
to freshen up and his large squad.
The
Canaries’ boss said: “Some of these players have not been involved so
far in our first three games and, as well as seeing what they have to offer,
we are hoping they will provide competition.”
Likely
inclusions in the starting line-up will be midfielder Leyton Maxwell, who
has been restricted to the substitutes bench, and forward Bobby Jones.
Others in
contention will be Jones’ brother Mike, a full-back, Dave O’Japheth from
Marine and Kevin McGarry from Tranmere Roberts.

Tredegar
ready for County – Gwent Senior Cup
|
|
TREDEGAR Town boss Rob Ellis
is promising his side will not compromise their footballing philosophy when
they entertain Newport County in the Gwent Senior Cup tonight (kick-off

Blue Square South outfit
County are likely to send a strong squad for the clash but Ellis is
insistent his MacWhirter Welsh League Division Two side are looking to
entertain.
His commendable approach
will be especially welcome to weary County fans who in all probability have
strained neck muscles after witnessing Sunday's long ball fest at Lewes.
Ellis explained: "This
is obviously an extremely hard game for us and not a priority, we are more
focused on the league and the Welsh Cup.
"However, it is a
great chance for us to test ourselves against good players and I can promise
anyone thinking of coming to the game that they will not be disappointed.
"Our facilities are
very good, the pitch is in excellent condition and we are a side who like to
get the ball down and play.
"You won't see any
long ball stuff from us, we will try to play football and to be as
competitive as we can.
"We would also like to
extend our thanks to Newport for letting us switch the tie, hopefully it'll
generate a bit of cash which will make a big difference to us."
Tredegar's form looks to be

Our big guns are ready to fire
|
|
WALES
take on the might of Germany this weekend with the nation’s big guns ready
to fire and John Toshack declaring, “This game couldn’t have come at a
better time for us.”
Toshack’s
men go into Saturday’s Euro 2008 qualifier at the Millennium Stadium off
the back of an encouraging draw against the Czech Republic in June and last
month’s excellent friendly victory over Bulgaria.
Now the
Wales boss welcomes back a host of senior players who missed the 1-0 win in
Bouras for one of the toughest tests in European football – Germany
currently topping Group D with six wins and a draw to their name.
Captain
Craig Bellamy, playmaker Jason Koumas, defender James Collins and
midfielders Carl Robinson and Carl Fletcher all return to bolster
Toshack’s options.
The only
absentees are from the fringes of the squad with Cardiff City’s Paul Parry
out for personal reasons and Sunderland defender Danny Collins a late
withdrawal with an ankle injury.
Wrexham
defender Steve Evans is also doubtful with an ankle injury, as is QPR
striker Danny Nardiello with a back problem.
While
Toshack has no problem with Parry’s withdrawal, he seemed unhappy about
Collins’ decision to pull out and suggested the 27-year-old’s
international future was in doubt.
But
Toshack was keen to focus on the huge challenge facing his team this
weekend.

Neath
boss Dyer facing big task

Neath
Athletic entered a new chapter in their history when Carmarthen Town became
the first Welsh Premier visitors to Llandarcy Park. But it all ended in
disappointment as the hosts went down 2-1, leaving manager Andrew Dyer to
contemplate the major task facing him this season.
The euphoria of the opening day 2-0 victory at Porthmadog has been replaced
by reality after successive defeats to Connah's Quay Nomads and now
Carmarthen.
"I was chuffed with our performance, but worried by the mistakes that
gifted Carmarthen their goals," said Dyer.
"We should have earned the point our performance
warranted, but we have to remain positive that we can turn things around.
"As at Connah's Quay, we contributed to our own downfall and Chris
Pridham, Andy Hill and Richard French all missed good opportunities."
"Ideally, I would like to bring in a few experienced players to help
the youngsters, but the resources here are limited," he added.
"There are going to be six or seven clubs at the bottom end of the
table that we need to target as games we have to get something from. I'm
sure, though, other clubs will feel exactly the same."

Newcomers
Llangefni still upbeat
|
|
TITLE
hopefuls Rhyl banked the three points as expected, courtesy of Lee Hunt’s
double and a Chris Roberts goal in between, but new boys Llangefni were not
disgraced.
Even
though the league’s newcomers remain pointless after three matches, all at
their own Talwrn Road ground, they remain upbeat.
Manager
Adie Jones said: “We will have Llanelli here on Friday, to complete an
awesome first set of four games against top opponents, and then our season
proper will start after that.
“Rhyl
were worthy winners and nothing can be said to detract from that, because
they are big, strong and talented – and were far better than us.
“Even
so, we had our moments, playing better than in our previous outing against
Carmarthen, and it took a brilliant save by Lee Kendall to turn away a
goal-bound shot from Darren Thomas.
“It was
a pity about Rhyl’s third goal right at the end, because that took the
shine off our performance.”
Rhyl
manager John Hulse said: “We dominated for long periods and gave a very
professional performance.
“Perhaps
we should have scored a few more goals, but to win 3-0 away is satisfying
and we were quite content with the outcome.
“Llangefni,
having come up from a lower league, were very spirited and had a good go
from the first whistle to the last, but we were too strong for them.”

Bluebirds
boss Dave Jones had witnessed his side snatch the most unlikely of
victories, while Canaries counterpart Peter Grant had seen his side throw

For
Jones, the three points were reward for home defeats to Stoke and Coventry
which he felt his side should have got more from.
“We
probably dominated our five previous games to this and not got our reward
from them,” said Jones.
“Against
Norwich, we rode our luck, it was probably our worst performance so far and
we got away with it.
“Norwich

“I’ve

JUST

Learn
your lesson "Martinez"
|
|
Face
the consequences and learn from your mistakes - that was the message Roberto
Martinez today gave to Ferrie Bodde following the Dutchman's dismissal in
Saturday's home defeat to Doncaster. With Swansea 1-0 ahead in a game that
failed to live up to the standards set so far under the Spaniard's reign,
midfielder Bodde saw red for aiming a headbutt at Doncaster's Brian Stock
following a tackle between the pair.
Television replays confirmed he had made contact with the former Preston
midfielder and referee Dean Whitestone was correct in sending Bodde off.
Whitestone had a particularly fussy afternoon, booking four players in a
game that never threatened to get the blood boiling apart from Bodde's
slip-up and pulled play back for what appeared to be legitimate challenges. And
while Martinez criticised the official, he centred his comments mostly on
Bodde's indiscretion.
'I don't like to speak about referees, but he (Whitestone) had a poor
afternoon,'' said Martinez. ''He let Doncaster slow the tempo down and he
didn't have the same criteria for both teams.
'But we are not going to blame anyone but ourselves.
'Incidents like this always happen and Ferrie needs to take responsibility.
In that respect he needs to learn and know everyone is really, really
disappointed.
'This is a team game and that could have been a selfish act. The dismissal
has been his only black mark in what has been a superb start to the
campaign.
However, Martinez believes the switch from football on the continent to the
British style is something Bodde is going to have to get used to.
'You have a learning curve when you come into the British game,'' he said.
''Certain actions on the continent do not get punished and if you get a
referee like we had it is something he needs to learn.
''Ferrie is very disappointed and he has apologised to his team-mates.'

Steve
Evans out for Wales' big Euro qualifiers
|
|
WREXHAM
defender Steve Evans is set to withdraw from the Wales squad for the
forthcoming European Championship qualifiers against Germany and Slovakia.
Evans,
recalled to the Dragons side for his first League Two start of the season
against Hereford United on Saturday, lasted just 17 minutes before limping
off with what is feared to be a recurrence of the ankle ligament damage he
suffered during the pre-season build-up.
Racecourse
boss Brian Carey was not optimistic about Evans' chances of travelling to
join John Toshack's squad later today, although the player will have an
x-ray before a final decision is made.
“Steve
went over on his ankle again and has the same injury he picked up at Newtown
in July," said Carey.
"The
Hereford player landed on him when he went over on it and so we’ll have to
see how he is, but I think it’s very unlikely he will report for duty with
the Wales squad."
Evans
was one of three Dragons players named in the national squad, along with
Mark Jones and Chris Lewellyn for Saturday's Millennium Stadium clash
against Germany, which is followed by an away game in Slovakia on Wednesday

Jones:
I’ve got players I need
|
|
WHILE the
end of the transfer window can leave even the greatest managers in a spin
Dave Jones insists his squad is ready and raring for the season ahead.
The
Cardiff boss watched as substitute Peter Whittingham inspired a second-half
comeback that handed the Bluebirds an impressive win at Norwich.
And while
Jones wasn’t about to predict promotion he admitted last year's excuses
would fall on deaf ears this time around.
“Your
team is only as strong as what you’ve got on the bench,” said Jones.
“I didn’t have enough players last season, but I believe I do now.
“I was
moaning a lot last year because I didn’t have strength in depth but that

“With

fitness, remains confident the former Premiership goal kings will live up to

Martinez
blames Swans for losing
|
|
Martinez:
‘This is all our own fault’
ROBERTO
Martinez refused to blame referee Dean Whitestone for his first home defeat
– and admitted Swansea were to blame for their own downfall.
The Swans
boss admitted his side had slipped from the high standards set so far this
season and were not helped by Ferrie Bodde’s sending off just after the
hour mark.
Martinez
would not comment fully on the incident having not seen the replays, but
conceded the Dutchman must take responsibility for his actions.
The
Spaniard will now assess whether to fine Bodde for his actions and said:
“The disappointing thing is that we created our own problems. We gave them
the initiative when we went down to 10 men and although we were not
outplayed, I was not happy with many of our departments.
“I
thought the referee had a poor game but I will not blame anyone apart from
ourselves and Ferrie has to take some responsibility.
“I do
not know exactly what happened but he needs to know we are all disappointed
because sometimes you need to walk away – this is a team game and that
could have been a selfish act.”
Martinez
confirmed Bodde had apologised to his team-mates following the final whistle
but the Liberty boss did not want to lose sight of his side’s other
failings.
He said:
“We’re not going to play well and the way we want every game but I
expect a lot from my players. We have to learn and improve from this.”

Town was cancelled out by a Connah's Quay equaliser with debutant Matt
Atherton heading in a Chris Williams corner.
Any remaining euphoria from last Sunday's demolition of The New Saints was
washed away at Aberystwyth by visitors Welshpool Town, who triumphed 3-2
with a brace from Calvin Davies. On-loan Wrexham starlet Jamie Reed gave the
Seasiders hope with his fourth goal in two games, an 18-yard shot over
keeper Gerard McGuigan, but Tomi Morgan's side held out.
TNS themselves took no time at all to settle into life at their new Park
Hall stadium, taking a second minute lead against Caersws through Alfie
Carter, who went on to complete a hat-trick in a facile 6-0 success.
Rhyl were
too strong for newly-promoted Llangefni Town, Lee Hunt leading the way with
a brace. The Talwrn Road outfit have lost their first three games, all at
home, and face a visit from table-topping Llanelli next weekend.
Injury-stricken
Porthmadog were overpowered by the league's all-time leading goal scorer
Marc Lloyd Williams, who scored twice in Newtown's 4-2 success. It was a
torrid debut for ex-Glasgow Rangers stand-in keeper Joe Sager from Mossley,
who was beaten four times in the first 26 minutes.
Along with Llangefni and Caersws, the Traeth outfit are still seeking their
first league point of the new campaign.

Scotland’s
Welsh love affair
|
|
JASON
SCOTLAND has revealed how he put his honeymoon on hold – because he knew
Swansea was the perfect match for him.
The
Trinidad talisman got hitched to sweetheart Nimphe in Scotland in the
summer, just days before linking up with his new team-mates for the first
time.
But
although it may be a tough way to start married life, Scotland insists the
offer of proving himself south of the border was the challenge he had been
waiting for.
“The
wedding had been planned for a long while, so there wasn’t much we could
do about it,” said the 28-year-old ex-World Cup star.
“We
didn’t have much time afterwards and we didn’t have a honeymoon.
“But I
always wanted to prove myself here so we just accepted it.
“I
could have opted for an easy life and stayed and not test myself, but I
wanted to push on and see how far I could go.”
Scotland
plans to get married again in his native country next year having begun a
new life in South Wales.

Carey:
Fans right to boo Wrexham
|
|
after
they slumped to their first league defeat at the Racecourse.
The
Dragons boss saw his side enjoy plenty of possession but they created few
clear-cut chances and were undone by second-half goals from Kris Taylor and
Trevor Benjamin.
Wrexham’s
players were booed off after the final whistle, and Carey said: “The fans
are entitled to their opinion. I probably would have booed myself if I’d
have been in the crowd and seen some of the things we did today.
“People
pay their money and they expect to be entertained. That’s what we’re
here for and we didn’t do that today.
Wrexham
found themselves a goal down when Kris Taylor fired home in the 53rd minute
after Richard Hope had blocked a Theo Robinson shot following a defensive
mix-up. The Bulls made it two when substitute Trevor Benjamin converted a
Clint Easton cross on 74 minutes.
The
defeat was Wrexham’s third in a row, following Tuesday’s 5-0 Carling Cup
capitulation to Aston Villa at the Racecourse and last weekend’s 2-1
League Two loss at Bradford City.
“I’m
bitterly disappointed,” Carey added. “We were very ineffective today.
Hereford
came and frustrated us early on and we didn’t ask them enough questions.
“We
started well – Matty Done in particular started well – but the longer
the game went on Hereford got more into the game and it gave them
confidence.”
Defender
Steve Evans went over on his ankle early in the game, and Carey said it was
doubtful the Wales defender would join up with John Toshack’s squad next
week

Please
lay off Warren
|

ANDY LEGG
insists Swans fans should be fair on Warren Feeney following his shock
switch from bitter rivals Cardiff City.
The
former Wales international was the last man to cross the Cardiff-Swansea
divide and suffered his share of stick because of it.
But Legg
believes Feeney’s loan move shouldn’t present the same problems.
He said:
“Warren has not long been associated with Cardiff and is not part of the
furniture.
“I was
in a no-win situation as I was a Welshman who had been associated with one
club for many years. The Swansea fans hated me for going to Cardiff and the
Cardiff fans didn’t like the fact I had played for Swansea.”

Joy and
despair for TNS at their new home
|
|
TNS played their first ever
home game at their new home at Park Hall Oswestry.
And it didn't take them
long to get the upper hand on Caersws in this Mid-Wales derby.
The New Saints took the
lead after just 2 minutes when Alfie Carter become the first scorer for The
Saints at their new home.
Carter went onto score a
hat-trick, Mike Wilde added a brace with Luke Holden completing TNS's demolition
of Caersws and but for the woodwork they could have a few more as well.
They have now wiped out
their minus goal difference in just one game and look to be back firing on
all cylinders as they move off the bottom to 13th in the league.
That's was the joy for TNS
today the despair is that just 312 (just 2 more than at Afan Lido's home
game last night) turned out to see the first ever game in the town by the professional
outfit, and for a derby game as well, all doesn't bode well crowd wise for
the Saints at their new home, but hopefully for Mike Harris's side the
crowds will start to turn out as they inevitably move up the table, or is it
the fact they have a team that doesn't share the town's name, but still
carries the initials of the Total Network Solutions side from Llansantffraid.
C'mon Mike what about the Oswestry Saints? I'm sure that would go down
better with the locals.

Wingmakers
On Cloud Nine as they go Top
|

Airbus UK Broughton are top of
the Principality Welsh Premier League for the first time in their history
after an excellent 1-0 win over Nev Powell's Bangor City at the Airfield
this evening. James McIntosh was the hero for the hosts with his second of
the season after 48 minutes as Gareth Owen's side won their second match of
the season, and they remain unbeaten. For the Citizens, ex-Nomad Craig
Hutchinson was picked in the starting eleven in place of the injured Gareth
Parry, whilst Tommy Mutton was left on the bench for the whole game.
Neath Athletic didn't enjoy
their first taste of top flight action at their Llandarcy Park home as they
were defeated 2-1 by Carmarthen Town. In an evenly contested opening half,
neither could make the breakthrough but the goals flowed in the opening
quarter of the second half. Firstly, Danny Thomas scored his third goal in
two games when he broke the deadlock on 55 minutes and the advantage was
doubled just three minutes when Sasha Walters struck his first of the
season. The home side were given hope when their skipper, Andy Hill scored
his third of the campaign, but the scores remained 2-1 in favour of the Old
Gold as they recorded their second League victory. The former Cardiff City
connection at Richmond Park was again evident as Deryn Brace handed a debut
to Jamal Easter, the brother of Wales International Jermaine, and he came on
just after the hour for Walters. Easter's former Wales Under 17 and
Bluebirds team-mates Gregg Coombes and Curtis McDonald are both now with
Carmarthen, and although Coombes played this evening, McDonald was injured.
In the evening's other
game, Derek Brazil will be delighted with his team's 2-1 victory over Tony
Pennock's Port Talbot Town. Similarly to the match in Llandarcy Park, all
three goals came in the second half and it was the Bluebirds young striker,
Jack Christopher who grabbed the opener on the hour. Winger Lee Hudgell,
making his first start of the season doubled the lead nine minutes later,
and although Liam McCreesh scored his first for the club with nine minutes
remaining, the Bluebirds managed to hang on to claim their second maximum
haul of the season and maintain their 100% record at the Bridge Meadow
Stadium.

Cardiff
hit by Purse injury blow
|
|
Cardiff City captain Darren
Purse is set to have surgery on Friday to repair cartilage damage in his
knee.
Purse, 30, fell awkwardly
in Tuesday's Carling Cup win over Leyton Orient, and a scan has revealed a
tear in his lateral cartilage.
Bluebirds manager Dave
Jones said he expects centre-back Purse to be out for at least three weeks.
"The best thing to do
is to get it repaired now and not to wait to see if rest will do,"
Jones told BBC Sport.
"He's had a bit of a
torrid time with injuries. He thought he was back up to full pelt but
unfortunately he fell awkwardly and tweaked the cartilage.
"Hopefully our club
surgeon will have time on Friday to get it repaired and then he won't be out
for that long."
Purse's injury leaves Jones
will Glenn Loovens and Roger Johnson as his only recognised centre-backs.
The situation could force
Jones to dip into the transfer market before Friday's transfer window
deadline.
"We were trying to
bring in new players on Thursday but unless other clubs want to sell there's
nothing we can do," Jones added.
"It will all start up
again in a week's time when club's will be looking for loans."

Swansea have
signed Andrea Orlandi on a free transfer from Alaves.
Orlandi, 23, can play
anywhere down the left or up front, and has signed a one-year deal at the
Liberty Stadium with an option to extend his stay.
"Andrea came over to
Swansea back in June for a look around, and we've been trying to sign him
ever since," boss Roberto Martinez told City's website.
"He will be a
fantastic addition to our squad."

No
Swans deal for Feeney
|
|
A DEAL to
take Cardiff City striker Warren Feeney on loan to Swansea City collapsed at
the 11th hour last night.
The
Northern Irish international was close to making the move from Ninian Park
to the Liberty Stadium when negotiations finally broke down, Bluebirds
chairman Peter Ridsdale confirmed to the Western Mail.
Feeney
started Cardiff’s opening match of the season against Stoke, but since
then has had to make do with a place on the bench. With Robbie Fowler and
Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink now fit, the 26-year-old’s chances at Cardiff look
limited.
Ridsdale
said, “It was on and off all day yesterday, but a deal could not be done
and Warren will not be going to Swansea.”

Quartet
look to Cwmbran
|
|
CAERLEON,
Caldicot Town, Croesyceiliog and Newport YMCA will doubtless look towards
Gwent rivals Cwmbran Town to do them all a massive favour tomorrow when they
host Division One leaders Dinas Powys.
The
top of the table outfit have won all five of their league matches and
already have the look of championship title material in the first month of
the new campaign.
So
now it falls to the full strength Crows to stop Dinas' bandwagon from
rolling on at Cwmbran Stadium, where the visitors will include former Crow
Danny Street in their squad.
YMCA
entertain struggling Pontypridd Town at Mendalgief Road seeking to stretch
their unbeaten run to a fourth game under manager Mark Coldrick.
He
reports top scorer Aaron Stewart has been receiving treatment to a hamstring
strain, striker Chris Egitto is still two weeks away from being fit and that
defender Craig James (holiday) and midfielder Steve Edwards (honeymoon) are
unavailable.
However,
left-back Craig Ford has recovered from a back strain picked up during the
2-2 home draw with Pontardawe Town last time out.
Caerleon
are another club set to face struggling opposition, they travel to meet
Maesteg Park Athletic whose only match to date resulted in last Saturday's
6-0 defeat at Dinas Powys.
To
add to Maesteg's woes they could face returning striker Chris Pearce, who
has been sidelined with ankle ligament damage - although he will almost
certainly be introduced from the substitute's bench tomorrow.
Caerleon
boss Brendan Dowd however, is unsure if he will be able to call on
midfielder Ben Davies, who this week has been the subject of interest from
English outfit Yate Town.
Davies
is an influential member of the Cold Bath Lane side, a fact illustrated by
his winner in last Saturday's 1-0 victory over much-fancied Bridgend Town.
Croesyceiliog
travel to face unbeaten Cambrian & Clydach hoping for a win, which would
help them move away from the lower reaches of the table.
However,
they will be minus suspended defender Mike Dewar, Jamie and Danny Jenkins
through holiday and work commitments respectively plus Daniel Clouth, who is
also on holiday.
But
the biggest blow to Croesyceiliog's hopes is the absence of goalkeeper John
Bailey, who has been ruled out until Christmas following hand surgery.
With
number one choice Pat O'Hagan also sidelined through injury, manager Chris
Evans has been searching around to sign a replacement stopper - a task not
helped by the new one player-one club rule.
Caldicot
Town host Goytre United minus Karl Stevens and David Lloyd, both of whom are
suspended after being sent off in last Saturday's 3-0 home defeat at the
hands of Cwmbran.

RICHARD
Ryan is leading Goytre United's chase for a third successive top two finish
in the MacWhirter Welsh Football League.
Ryan
has netted eight goals already this season and tomorrow leads the Goytre
attack at Caldicot in Division One.
Leaders
Dinas Powys, who still have a 100 per cent record, travel to play Cwmbran
Town, where Spanish coach Guilermo Ganet is leading a cultural revolution
with players of many nationalities.
Bridgend
Town are at home to in-form Ton Pentre, while in Division Two, Barry Town
travel to play Tredegar Town.
Cardiff
students Uwic have started their season strongly and they make a trip to
play Treharris Athletic.
