Crunch time for cash strapped Cwmbran

A question mark today hangs over the future of Cwmbran Town as the cash-strapped club edges ever closer to financial disaster.

The players were told this week there is no money to pay them after sponsorship the club had been praying for did not materialise.

However, in the short term, the players - who earn up to £50 a week - have given their commitment to the club and will be lining up for the Principality Building Society Welsh Premier League meeting with Aberystwyth at Cwmbran Stadium on Friday night

Michael Lewis, acting club chairman, said: "We have told the players there is no money to pay them but they have given their commitment to the club for the immediate future. But a lot depends on the players.

"And certain rumours circulating in the town that manager Sean Wharton is about to resign are not true.

"We are continuing to work hard and try to attract local business but it is proving extremely difficult. We have tried our best but sponsorship is not forthcoming - it is crunch time."

There have been rumours that a consortium was interested in taking over the club but Lewis said: "To my knowledge there is no consortium. An individual made an offer which was not agreeable to the committee."

The Crows, inaugural winners of the league which carried them into the European Cup and a meeting with Cork City, have been acting out a King Canute role in trying to stem the tide over the past year.

It has been "Mission Impossible" since long-term benefactor John Colley took a back seat - although he is the club's shirt sponsor - and it was a year ago that the club suffered an exodus of players.

A defiant Lewis is hoping that the fans who turned up for the last home game against Welshpool - nearly 300 of them - will back the club for Aberystwyth's visit.

Admission for the Welshpool game was free - the cost covered by a sponsor - and young fans received gifts, including a season ticket for the rest of the season.

Sean Wharton, who took over when Brian Coyne departed, said: "It is a nightmare time to be without money. It is a shame because the players deserve better.

"We have had to cut back on training and that has coincided with our dip in form.

"I have tried to protect the players from what has been going on but I had to tell them at training that the club has absolutely no money.

"The players deserve better than what we are giving them. I don't think it is the money so much as the time they giving up when they could be working and earning money.

"They have families and I am extremely gutted for the players.

"I do not want to be the manager who takes Cwmbran down and, apart from thinking of the players, I have to think of myself."

Carmarthen "we're in the money"

Carmarthen Town are on the verge of a major cash windfall.

Victory over Bangor City last week at the last-16 stage of the FAW Welsh Premier Cup has put the club in with the likes of Swansea City, Cardiff City and Wrexham in the quarter-finals of the lucrative competition.

It has also guaranteed them at least £15,000.

Making it through the last four would see that amount take a huge jump - big money for any Welsh Premier outfit.

"We'll have one of the big boys in the next round and we'll be looking to put on another great show at Richmond."

New Saints get down to business

MILLIONAIRE soccer fan Mike Harris and Oswestry Borough Council could yet breathe some life into proposals to build a Euro soccer stadium in the town.

Bosses from The New Saints and council chiefs plan to meet before Christmas to assess whether the proposed new lifestyle centre at Oswald Park and a Euro-standard soccer stadium are compatible and can be completed together in 2008.

“We will be meeting next month to see where they are with that particular project, said TNS general manager Ian Williams.

“It is certainly not dead. We would be looking for external funding for the stadium and the support of the local authority,” he added.

What is certainly going ahead is the eight-lane bowling alley and restaurant which is currently being built on the former home of Oswestry Town Football Club at Park Hall.

Mike Harris has poured around £2.5m of his money into a scheme to develop a third generation Astroturf pitch as a training facility for both TNS and the local community, with the intention of creating funding for the continued success of the TNS soccer team in Welsh soccer circles.

Another west Wales bluebird flies away

Haverfordwest County has released midfielder Nicky Palmer.

Nicky a former Newport County & Llanelli player joined the bluebirds in the 2003/04 season.

Nicky made 86 league appearances for the club and was only a sub on 6 occasions. In those games he scored 4 goals, and was selected by WPL managers in the first 11 of last seasons welsh premier league team of the season.

Nicky becomes the 4th player under contract to be released by the Haverfordwest following the release of Deryn Brace, Adie Harris & Tony Bird.

All square at Coychurch Road last night

Bridgend Town 0-0 Pontardawe Town

Strangely enough this was the first draw for both sides in their 10 league games they have both played so far this season.

Bridgend's poor home form came back to haunt them as they have now only managed 4 points in 5 home games.

Ponty's away form consists of 2 away wins (we wont mention who they beat on the 19th Aug) & their 2nd win came at Maesteg earlier this month.

The point a piece moves both teams up a place, with Bridgend now up to 10th, while Ponty move up to 14th.

Looking good for the away teams

After the first leg of the Loosemoores cup it turned out to be a good night for both away teams.

At Park Avenue Caersws hold the upper hand as they came away with a 2-1 win, not before the game was delayed for an hour, as the floodlights failed.

Caersws went into the lead with a goal from new signing Martin Plant (no not Platt ex Corrie star) In the second half Caersws doubled the lead to make it 2-0, but Aberystwyth pulled a goal back 2 minutes from normal time with a goal from Stuart Roberts.

At The Traeth Porthmadog could not repeat their recent good cup form as they were held to a  0-0 to league leaders Rhyl.

The second leg of this tie will be at Belle Vue next Tuesday evening, 5th December, while Caersws entertain Aberystwyth a week later on 12th December.

The final will be played earlier than usual this season, with a late February/early March Sunday date, and venue to be decided after the Semi Finals.

League have grounds for concern

There are two big issues for MacWhirter Welsh League clubs to consider going into the new year, writes Terry Phillips.

The first concerns facilities at First Division grounds in particular, while the second will mean clubs adapting to the 'one player, one club' rule coming in for 2007-2008.

That would stop clubs signing players to help in an emergency. Pontypridd Town moved quickly when their keeper, Mark Poole, was ruled out for one match.

They were able to sign Geraint Williams of Llanelli on a dual registration which allowed him to cover for Poole.

From next season Ponty and others who have used the system would have to sign the player they want and he would not be able to play anywhere else.

It was less than 20 years ago, of course, when players could sign for as many clubs as they wanted provided none were in the same League.

From next season players must decide which club they sign for and then stick - or transfer.

Welsh League officials have been considering a growing problem over facilities.

First Division clubs are, in many cases, falling a long way behind on facilities when compared to Principality Welsh Premier League clubs.

With one promotion place available each season that needs to be addressed.

The league committee have talked about different ground criteria levels for each of their three divisions, raising expectations for those in Division One to take them close to the WPL.

There is likely to be a special meeting of clubs in the new year, probably February, to discuss the matter.

Welsh League secretary Ken Tucker has now sent out letters to all Division One clubs asking which of them wish to be considered for promotion to the Premier League.

One, Aberaman Athletic, have already filed their application.

Bridgend Town, Neath Athletic, Pontypridd Town and last seasons champions Goytre United are also likely to put their names forward.

League Cup Semis look finely balanced

The First legs of the Loosemores League cup Semi Final will be played on Tuesday evening with Aberystwyth Town and Porthmadog entertaining Caersws and Rhyl respectively.

Both ties are likely to be closely contested over the two legs, but at Park Avenue, the in form Seasiders must be favourites to build a lead over the Bluebirds, who have been all over the place in League matches of late, but they did cause a minor surprise in the Quarter Final by deflating Carmarthen.

It could be much closer at Y Traeth, but Porthmadog will be confident of gaining a first leg advantage on the evidence of their recent Cup form. Over the past month, they have put Bangor out of the Welsh Cup, defeated Llanelli in the financially lucrative FAW Premier Cup and put holders The New Saints out of this competition.

While Rhyl have been far from impressive on the road in Knock Out competitions, losing to Welsh League side Ton Pentre in the Welsh Cup and then at Port Talbot in the Premier Cup.

The second leg of this tie will be at Belle Vue next Tuesday evening, 5th December, while Caersws entertain Aberystwyth a week later on 12th December.

The final will be played earlier than usual this season, with a late February/early March Sunday date and venue to be decided after the Semi Finals.

Bridgend looking to make up ground

Bridgend are looking to make up ground in the league with 3 games in the next week.

On Wednesday night they are home to Pontardawe Town, then on Saturday UWIC travel to Coychurch Road. The following Wednesday they visit Neath. 3 wins from those games would lift Bridgend up with the leading pack.

Bridgend have made their intensions clear about seeking promotion to the welsh premier league, should they be in a position to qualify.

They have had a mixed season so far winning 5 and losing 4, they have a 100% winning record on the road winning all 4 of their away games, and none more impressive than last Saturdays 4-0 demolition of league leaders ENTO Aberaman, with Nicky Burke, Darren Robinson, Sam Small and Ryland Morgans getting Bridgend's goals.

Their home form has kept them in mid-table, as they have won just once at home and suffered 4 defeats. Their only success at home was a 3-1 win over Newport YMCA, and their 3 defeats all came to top half opposition, Ton Pentre 0-2, Maesteg Park 1-2 & Pontypridd 1-3.

WPL clubs vote for status quo

At a meeting held in Caersws on Sunday, following a lively debate regarding the future size and structure of the league, the seventeen member clubs voted to retain the status quo.

This will mean that the league will revert to a membership of 18 for the 2007/2008 season, providing that at least one club from the feeder leagues wins promotion.

In the event of two clubs qualifying and desiring promotion, the bottom club in this seasons championship will be relegated to the appropriate feeder league.

The clubs also indicated that the future development of all aspects of the league should be discussed at a tripartite meeting with the FAW and FAW Trust, considering that this would be particularly helpful given the demands placed upon them by the introduction of the FAW Domestic Licensing System next season.

Another concern was the imminent introduction of the new UEFA ground regulations, due to be applied from the 2008/2009 season, which are likely to have an impact on those clubs qualifying for UEFA Club Competitions. This will also be taken into consideration by the Board of Directors when the allocations of future ground improvement grant aid is discussed at a special meeting planned for Monday 18th December.
Geraint Evans of G2 Sports Management, the leagues marketing partners made a presentation to clubs, following which it was decided that a Marketing Seminar for clubs be held in the new year.

In his presentation Mr Evans highlighted the small percentage of female supporters that attend Principality Building Society Welsh Premier League games, which was indicated in the recent supporters online survey. This was disputed by some of the clubs present , but the imitative in primary schools being taken by some clubs was considered to be a positive development, in efforts to attract more spectators to league matches.

Weekends welsh league round up

ENTO Aberaman Athletic's shock 4-0 home defeat by Bridgend Town allowed Neath Athletic to leapfrog them to the top of Division One.

Aberaman slumped to the Coychurch Road visitors as Nicky Burke, Darren Robinson, Sam Small and Ryland Morgans all netted. It was Bridgend's fourth league win on the road, where they seem more comfortable at the moment.

Meanwhile, Neath were winning 2-1 at Llandarcy Park against newly-promoted Gwent outfit Croesyceiliog in the division's only other game to survive.

In an incident-strewn first half, Jamie Jenkins put the visitors ahead before Steve Pockett levelled. Then Andy Hill scored from the spot to put Neath firmly back on course.

Division Two leaders Troedyrhiw and second-placed Garw Athletic were held 0-0 and 1-1 against Tredegar Town and Cardiff Corinthians respectively, while late strikes by Anthony Rawlins (88) and Robbie Hugglestone (92) gave Bettws a 2-0 verdict over Morriston Town.

A hat-trick from Lee Grant led Division Three leaders Pentwyn Dynamo to a thumping 5-0 win over Goytre, but second-placed Llanwern slipped up, being held 2-2 by Newcastle Emlyn, who go fourth.

Welsh Premier review

Cwmbran fell to a two goal blast on the hour mark at a rain-lashed Remax Stadium and it's now a worrying eight Welsh Premier League games without a win for the Gwent outfit.
The Crows recalled midfielders Kris Leek, Dale Raven and Michael Pattimore into the starting line-up at the expense of Sam Small, Geraint Goodrich and Steve Loverso respectively.
This enabled skipper Josh Collins to start up front with midfielder Rhys Williams dropping back into the centre of defence.
Port Talbot were first to press with midfielder Andrew Mumford firing a 25-yard free kick inches wide.
Collins popped up in his own penalty area to block a goal-bound effort by Martin Rose before he moved forward to test home goalkeeper Kristian Rogers.
Williams saved goalkeeper Gareth Wesson from being brought into action for the first time with a superb tackle on Rose as the striker shaped to shoot.
Mumford was again off target with another long range free kick awarded for a foul on Dane Williams by Leek, who was booked.
As the opening period came to a conclusion Dane Williams went close with a fierce drive before Mumford was yellow carded for a foul on Raven.
Shortly after the start of the second period the injured Rose gave way for substitue striker Chad Bond. Soon after Mumford side-footed inches wide after being set up by Lee John.
As heavy rain fell, Port Talbot got on top and took the lead when left back Dyfan Pierce beat Wesson from 18 yards.
And just three minutes later it was 2-0 when John was left with time and space to pass the ball past Wesson.
The Crows made a double substitution by bringing on Kristian Hanbury and Small for Michael Parkin and Pattimore respectively.
Although the switches created chances for top scorer Jody Jenkins and left back Gareth Wysome, the Steelmen played the game out to record a comfortable victory.

Cornering the record

HOTSHOT Andrew Edwards may well have kicked his way into the world record books with one of the most amazing feats ever seen on a football pitch, writes Ray Parker.

The 25-year-old Caldicot player, who lives in Newport, scored a hat-trick - the three goals all direct from corners - in a MacWhirter Welsh League, Reserve Division (East) win over Risca.

And not even the Association of Football Statisticians have heard of anyone managing such an achievement before.

Edwards' staggering efforts earned him a first-team call and he came off the substitutes' bench to score a third goal for Caldicot in their 3-0 away win over Briton Ferry in the Second Division.

Edwards said: "I have never scored direct from a corner before. But on this occasion they were all from in swingers - two with my right foot and the third from the left. The opening goal was in the first half with the wind against me and the two remaining goals were in the second-half with the wind going for me."

A modest Edwards added: "I was very pleased - but more pleased that we won. I didn't play too badly which I was more pleased about."

A spokesman for the Association of Football Statisticians, said: "I have never heard of that happening and I doubt if it has happened. I think it is unique."

Now that the AFS have been informed they will be circulating their members of the achievement to see if there is a recording of such a feat.

And fiancé Jacqui wasn't going to miss out on the action. "He couldn't have achieved it without me washing his kit every week!"

Bookmakers William Hill said they would have offered odds of 10,000-1 on Andrew's incredible treble.

Welsh Premier review

Rhyl took advantage of the inactivity of Llanelli and The New Saints to go to the top of The Principality Building Society Welsh Premier League as a result of a 4-0 drubbing of Airbus UK at Belle Vue. Andy Moran opened the scoring for the Lilywhites after 38 minutes, with Lee Hunt adding a second on 63. Phillips contributed an own goal after 70, while Dave Cameron sealed an impressive victory on 79 minutes after coming on as sub 8 minutes earlier.

It was a similar scoreline at Y Traeth, but all of Porthmadog's goals came in the first half against a depleted Caersws outfit. Gareth Parry got the first after 20 minutes, with the talented Les Davies adding a second 8 minutes later. Jason Sadler made it 3-0 to the home side 5 minutes before the interval, with Davies really spoiling the Bluebirds half time cup of tea, by adding a fourth in the 45th minute.
At Maes Y Dre Steve Rodgers was in hat trick form for Welshpool, adding to Caernarfon Town's already considerable problems. All of Rodgers' goals came in the second half to make it a misreable journey home for the beleaguered Canaries.

There was an excellent game at Park Avenue between two of the Leagues in form teams, Aberystwyth Town and Connah's Quay. Adam Dickenson got the 34th minute opener for the Nomads, only to see the Seasiders, Stuart Roberts, cancel it out after 74.
Friday nights only game saw Port Talbot record their first League win since 8th October, defeating Cwmbran Town 2-0.

Rees in our time

FAW president Peter Rees could soon become one of the most powerful men in world football.

Rees is aiming to become the first Welshman ever to be elected to the vice presidency of FIFA.

Welsh football's top bod will go head-to-head with the English and Northern Ireland FAs in a bid to succeed Scotland's David Will when he steps down from the position next year.

Will has been in the influential position for the past 16 years but will vacate it after the FIFA congress next May.

But Rees faces competition for the prized seat on the executive committee from FA chairman Geoff Thompson and his Belfast counterpart Jim Boyce.

"This is an important role at the top table of world football and a chance for Wales to have a strong voice within FIFA," said Rees. "It is difficult to underestimate how important this could be for Welsh football." Wales have never had a representative inside the corridors of power of the world governing body while Northern Ireland's Harry Cavan held the role for 30 years before Will.

Secretary general David Collins enjoys a close personal friendship with Blatter and was placed in charge of Leipzig during this summer's World Cup in Germany.

Roberts after the Welsh job

Porthmadog manager Osian Roberts is keen to take on the Wales semi-professional national team.

The Football Association of Wales have advertised for a manager to replace Andy Beattie, who stepped down after leading Wales to the Four Nations title last May.

Roberts is the only Principality Welsh Premier League manager to hold the Uefa pro licence.

He was a manager in the American professional league, has been manager of Porthmadog for six years and has experience with Welsh youth teams.

"I would love to manage at international level again," said Roberts.

"I'm highly qualified, experienced and above all, I know what tournament competitions are all about."

Ponty boss may put the boots back on

Former Cardiff City and Leeds United midfield man Ryan Nicholls is considering a comeback as player/manager of Pontypridd Town.

Nicholls, 33, this week had surgery on the cruciate knee ligament damage that ended his playing days and was on crutches as he took charge of the Pontypridd team for their MacWhirter Welsh League match against Afan Lido today.

"Ryan is considering a comeback, but no decision will be made until he can train and test the knee," said Ponty press officer Clive Harry.

Nicholls is manager of a Pontypridd Town team intent on earning promotion to the Principality Welsh Premier League.

He steered Ponty to the Division Two championship last season, went 30-plus game unbeaten at one stage and reached the last 16 of the Welsh Cup.

Now the task is for Nicholls and Co to finish champions of Welsh League Division and secure promotion.

Nicholas puts faith in Jesus

Latest Spanish signing Juan Jesus Perez Jabalera will not feature for Llanelli in tomorrow's home derby clash with Carmarthen (7.30).

The third Spaniard at Stebonheath joins fellow countrymen Jacob Mingorance and Efren Fernandez, but won't play a part in manager Peter Nicholas's plans against the Old Gold.

The Spaniard has finally been given international clearance and has signed on non-contract terms from CD Santa Fe.

But he will have to wait for his Stebo bow as the Reds look to bounce back from two successive defeats.

Nicholas admits he has not got a full assessment of his latest signing despite welcoming him to the club.

His arrival sparked the end of a long chase for the 20-year-old, who underwent a training programme before moving to Wales.

"He will not be involved this week," he confirmed.

"He's more likely to be involved next week. I've not really had a proper look at him but what I do know is that he is energetic and a good passer of the ball.

"We tried to get him here before the European games but he could not get international clearance.

"The Challenge Cup would have been a good place to try him out, but obviously we couldn't sign him then."

Nomads target Europe & build for future

WHAT a difference a year makes.

Connah’s Quay Nomads are currently one of the form sides in the Welsh Premier, lying third with European football a real prospect for next season.

Nev Powell’s side are just two points off the top after a tremendous start to their campaign with seven wins from 12.

Nomads’ proud standing reflects a remarkable transformation from last Christmas, when they were 15 points adrift at the foot of the table with relegation looking almost a certainty.

They eventually finished a respectable 12th, and on current form would eclipse their highest ever fifth-place finish in the Welsh Premier.

The club is set to move to a new stadium in 2010 – by which time Nomads may have even joined Saints and Llanelli as full-time professionals.

"We’re trying to build for that possibility one day," says Powell, Nomads manager since 1993.

"Connah’s Quay Nomads could be full-time – we’ve already got a good youth structure.

"At the moment we’re just glad to be in third, but what the chairman and the board members and I have said is that we want is to try and get into Europe and get a good, settled squad.

Prolific striker calls it a day at Newtown

DANNY Barton has called time on his career with Newtown following three goal laden years at G F Grigg Latham Park.

The 32-year-old insisted his motives for leaving were purely based on “football reasons,” while thanking the club’s loyal support for their continued faith in the club.

Barton arrived in 2003 as a key signing of Roger Preece.

Barton formed a feared partnership with Peter Smith in his first season but has struggled to make an impact in recent months.

A change in work commitments have limited Barton’s opportunities to train and he marked his final Robins appearance with the equalising goal in their draw at Cefn Druids last Friday evening.

"I would like to stress that my decision was made mutually between myself and the club, and was based on football reasons,” he said. I would like to thank Newtown Football Club for some happy times and memories."

Barton broke onto the scene as a prolific striker with Spar Mid Wales League side Berriew, before launching a Welsh Premier career that took in spells at Oswestry Town, Welshpool Town, TNS, Rhyl and Caernarfon Town.

Barton scored 127 goals in 241 top flight appearances and is seventh in the all-time Welsh Premier top scorer chart.

However Barton has indicated a possible return to football in the future.

Lloyd & Nicholas scoop awards

Llanelli Football Club have double reason to celebrate at next month's Brin Isaac Memorial Fund awards dinner. Experienced left-back Gary Lloyd has won the main sportsperson of the year award while manager Peter Nicholas has scooped the coach of the year title. Llanelli product Lloyd, 34, joins the likes of previous winners Simon Jones, Scott Quinnell, Robert Croft and Matthew Jones on the list of recipients.

His return from Carmarthen to Stebonheath Park last February proved hugely popular with the Reds faithful.

He helped the club to the Welsh Cup semi-final before steering them to their highest placing in the Welsh Premier League - second.

That helped them reach the Uefa Cup qualifying stages where they knocked out Swedish outfit Gefle, finding Danish side Odense too tough in the next round.

Nicholas scoops the accolade of coach of the year after a truly remarkable turnaround in fortunes at Stebo.

He originally joined as an assistant to then director of football Lucas Cazorla following the takeover of current owners Jesco Group during July last year.

But with Cazorla departing seven months later, Nicholas took over the reins.

The former Barry and Newport boss guided the club to a cup victory over TNS before writing a new chapter in the club's history with their European exploits.

Following the defeat to Odense, Nicholas saw his side go 18 matches unbeaten before losing to Aberystwyth last week.

Aber depleted ahead of Nomads game

Back-to-back victories came at a cost for Aberystwyth as the casualty list grew further Injuries have left Aber severely depleted

ABERYSTWYTH Town manager Brian Coyne has conceded that a superb run of four successive wins has come at a heavy cost, as the casualty list grew further last weekend. A superb week saw the Seasiders book their place in the semi-finals of the Loosemores League Cup, as well as moving within three points of the Welsh Premier League leaders. Yet success came at a price, as midfielder Geraint Passmore and striker Andy Evans both sustained long term injuries, while Craig Jones and Geoff Kellaway pulled hamstrings.

The injuries have left them severely depleted ahead of Saturday’s home clash with third-placed Connah’s Quay, and their semi-final first leg clash with Caersws next Tuesday. Coyne said: “I am delighted that we have won our last four games, but it has come at a cost, with Geraint Passmore break-ing his leg in our quarter-final against Llanelli in midweek. “Geraint has been a revelation since joining us in the summer and had only just won the Welsh Premier Goal of the Month competition, so the injury was very upsetting. “Andy Evans then broke a bone in his foot at Caersws and could also be out for up to six weeks, and on top of this, Craig Jones and Geoff Kellaway also picked up hamstring injuries. “We will be severely depleted against Connah’s Quay, which will be a massive game for us this Saturday, but there is no point in moaning about it, we’ll just have to get though it.”

On a positive note, long term casualty Glyndwr Hughes made a promising comeback in the reserve team, following his leg infection, and may be avail-able for first team selection. Meanwhile Rob King, who has recently turned down an offer to join Mid Wales rivals New-town, has also made a welcome return to the first team set-up, along with Gareth Watkins. There will be possible call-ups for young reserve players Stuart Fraser and Chris Wilkins, as the Aberystwyth manager looks to make the most of what will be a very stretched squad.

Back trouble costs Town

Carmarthen Town boss Mark Jones has urged his side to sort out their defensive problems.

With a trip to high-flying Llanelli facing Town on Friday, Jones is aware any lapses at the back will be punished.

Town go into the local derby having suffered a poor week by their own high standards.

On Tuesday they crashed out of the Loosemores Cup at the quarter-final stage at Caersws, while on Saturday they were held to a 1-1 draw by Porthmadog, who equalised in the 89th minute.

"We have a bad habit of not being able to keep clean sheets," said Jones. "Defensive lapses. All the time there is something wrong.

"We have to be a bit uglier instead of pretty.

"Some people might say that we should play our way out of the back but you have to get your foot behind the ball and clear your lines - especially in the last couple of minutes."

Llanelli look to bounce back

Llanelli head into tomorrow's Welsh Premier League derby clash with Carmarthen at Stebonheath Park desperate to return to winning ways (7.30).The Reds have lost their last three games - the latest at the hands of Porthmadog in their FAW Premier Cup second round clash on Tuesday night.

Last week's 4-0 defeat to Bangor was Peter Nicholas's side's first league defeat, but they will have to beat Carmarthen if they want to maintain top spot in the league.

Carmarthen, who booked an FAW Premier Cup quarter-final spot after defeating Bangor 3-1, have ex-Reds target Deryn Brace in their squad for tomorrow's clash while Llanelli's new Spaniard Juan Jesus Perez Jabalera is not expected to feature.

The former Santa Fe midfielder has arrived at Stebo on a non-contract basis and should be available for selection from next week.

Ford's task to put Bryntirion in a forward gear

Bryntirion Athletic aim to step up their quest for MacWhirter Welsh Football League honours tomorrow evening when they entertain Caerleon (7.30pm).

Former Cardiff City player Francis Ford is manager at Bryntirion Stadium and his task is to mould a team capable of taking the club to promotion.

Ford took charge at Bryntirion last summer from Phil Clay, who had led the club from the South Wales Amateur League into Welsh League football.

Long-serving Ceri Thomas, who has been with Bryntirion since their days in the Amateur League, is captain and Scott Lanyon top scorer on five in a team who share out the goals.

Bryntirion have been in the Welsh League for five seasons, spending two in Division Three, one in the Second and now two in the First Division.

They are handily placed in the top third of the table and have installed new floodlights in the quest for Principality Welsh Premier League status.

The club directors will decide whether Bryntirion are ready for that move yet and they have plenty of time before an application must be put forward for promotion.

Bridgend Town are thinking ahead

Bridgend Town are thinking ahead. They are ambitious and are planning a new stadium within the next couple of years.

Bridgend will complete the current campaign at Coychurch Road before making way for an Asda superstore. That will give the club more than £2m to spend on a new stadium, which will be built at Aberkenfig or Litchard, to the north of Bridgend.

Town are challenging near the top of Division One, while they are also through to the last 16 of the Shamrock Travel Cup after beating AFC Porth at home 4-3.

The draw for the next round is tonight and the 16 involved are Bridgend, Maesteg Park, Bettws, Afan Lido, Caerau Ely, Cambrian Clydach, Aberaman, Goytre, Ammanford, Neath, Llanwern, Llansawel, Morriston, Tredegar, Ystradgynlais and Caldicot.

Port Talbot in last 8 of Prem cup

Further along the coast at Port Talbot both teams “huffed and puffed” without either side really adopting any control in the first half, which was high on commitment, but not quality.

The best chance fell to Lee Hunt of the visitors after 25 mins when he failed to hit the target with a free header. With both teams having 5 in midfield it was hard to see how the deadlock would be broken. The second half was so different, with plenty of chances at both ends.

Hunt put the visitors ahead after 60 mins, only for Matthew Rees to scramble the equaliser after 76 mins when a corner wasn’t cleared to take the game into extra time.

It was Chad Bond who clinched the win for the home side on the stroke of half time in extra time and despite considerable Rhyl pressure the home team held out.

There was a major shock at the Traeth as CPD Porthmadog beat the full timers, Llanelli to round off a bad week for the West Walians.

Playing with a strong wind at their backs, the visitors dominated the first half laying siege to the home goal with Richard Harvey performing wonders.

It was a real surprise when the home team took the lead after 12 mins, when Wyn Thomas slipped under pressure from Les Davies to allow Jason Sadler to fire home left footed from 10 yards.

The rest of the half was Llanelli’s, but without success. With just 8 mins left Wyn Thomas atoned for his earlier mistake, firing home from the edge of the box as the home team failed to clear a corner with a weak header.

Then 3 mins into stoppage time, the home team claimed the winner as Sadler’s corner was headed back across goal by Rhys Roberts for Ryan Davies to force home from 2 yards for a stunning winner.

Carmarthen see off Bangor top make last 8

At Richmond Park, the game was quite open with both teams creating chances in an entertaining first half with Danny Thomas missing the best chance for the home team and Marc Lloyd Williams for the visitors.

Neither side was able to find the target however. Things opened up in the second half as the home team cruised to a comfortable win by two clear goals in the end.

Cotterrall broke the deadlock on the hour when he was fouled in the box and picked himself up to score from the spot. A second goal after 73 mins seemed to seal the win, although there was some doubt as to whether it was a Scott own goal or Kaid Mohamed got the final touch.

Bangor fought back with Stott scoring at the other end with 10 mins left and then looking as if they were going to draw level, but Mark Dodds cleared off the line.

With Bangor numbers limited at the back, Cotterrall sealed the win in the final minute with a 3rd goal.

County make into quarter-final of Prem cup

Newport County made it into the quarter-finals of the BBC Premier cup tonight when they beat NEWI Cefn Druids 2-1

The tie originally due to have been played at Spytty Park, but was switched to Plas Kynaston Lane because County's floodlights did not meet the required standard.

It was the home side who broke first blood just before half time when Osian Jones put the Druids one up.

They held onto their lead until the 80th minute when Julian Alsop put County level.

The game finished 1-1 after normal time, and County made sure of a home tie in the quarters when they scored the winner in the extra time courtesy of a Sam O'Sullivan goal.

County will have to wait to find out who their opponents will be, and perhaps if they will be penalised home advantage again due to their lighting.

Principality Building Society is calling all budding young designers to enter a unique competition to design the winning trophy for the Principality Building Society Welsh Premier Football League.

Caersws could quit the premier league

CAERSWS Football Club face an uncertain future, with John Baker confirming spiralling costs could force them out of the Welsh Premier League.

The Bluebirds acting chairman says the club will have to “modernise” with an advisory committee already formed to help raise funds.

Baker said: “We are confident of raising sufficient funds to complete the season but we don’t know what is going to happen long-term.

“The main thing is that Caersws Football Club survives and can continue to offer opportunities to local people while playing at the highest standard possible.”

The resignation of long-term financial backer Garth Williams has hit the Bluebirds hard and the club say they are grateful to supporters for financial donations since their plight became known.

Baker said: “I am more confident for the future since the meeting with local businessmen who were very supportive of the club’s cause.”

The club are considering becoming a public limited company with Baker insisting the 127-year-old institution must modernise if it is to survive beyond 2006.

“We cannot continue to run Caersws Football Club like a small village club. We are playing in the national league of Wales and must be ready to re-structure,” he said.

Baker said the new domestic licence demands, which include a minimum 500 seats will force many clubs into difficulties.

Port Talbot's slide continues

Port Talbot's slide down the welsh prem league table continued on Saturday when they lost away to Connah's Quay Nomads.

Lee John gave Port Talbot an early lead at Connah's Quay, but the Nomads fought back after the break.

Chris Sargeant equalised, and veteran Tommy Mutton got an 83rd-minute winner for the high-flying home team.

Port Talbot have only taken 1 point from their last 5 league games, and Lee John's goal on Saturday was their only goal in their last 5 games.

It is a strange down turn in fortunes for Port, as they previously had won 5 games on the trot with their last win coming over league champions the New Saints.

There are rumours that Saturdays goal scorer Lee John, has been the subject of a 7 day approach by Llanelli, that would another blow to their squad.

Nomad Earns Stockport Trial

CONNAH'S Quay midfielder Adam Dickinson returns from a holiday in Egypt today, blissfully unaware that he will report for a week's trial at Stockport County on Monday.

The 19-year old former Tranmere Rovers starlet has impressed since arriving on Deeside in the summer and now has the opportunity to show the League Two outfit what he can do.

"The scout was hugely impressed by Adam which doesn't surprise me," says Nomads' manager Nev Powell. "But what may come of it we can only wait and see."

Division 1 round up

Reigning champions Goytre kept up the pressure near the top of the First Division as they defeated Taffs Well 4-2 with Richard Ryan bagging two of the goals, one from the penalty spot, and Andrew Pearson also weighing in with a brace. Stephen Arthur scored for Taffs Well, who also gained a late own-goal.

Ton Pentre slipped to a surprise 1-0 home defeat by Croesyceiliog which brought to an end a highly successful run from them. A Chris Watkins penalty as early as the first minute was sufficient to give Croesy the points.

The visitors actually finished the game with only 10 men after the sending off of Chris Pritchard.

Elsewhere Ben Davies scored twice for Caerleon in their 4-2 victory over Dinas Powys, while Lewis Summers was Newport YMCA's scorer in their 1-0 home defeat of Ely Rangers and Maesteg Park fought out a goalless draw with ENTO Aberaman.

Bryntirion Athletic beat Grange Quins 3-1 courtesy of goals by Keri Thomas, Sean Cronin and Ben Bannon.

Division 2 & 3 round up

TROEDYRHIW are three points clear of the chasing pack in the Second Division of the Welsh League - but they had their work cut out to overcome struggling bottom club AFC Llwydcoed 2-1.

Garw who missed out on promotion last season by fielding an ineligible player, are their nearest challengers following a 5-1 caning of Caerau Ely.

Briton Ferry, a former League of Wales club, were disappointed to go down 3-0 at home to Caldicot, while Tredegar Town gave an impressive performance to overcome Cardiff Corries 2-1.

There is no change at the top of Division Three after the leading trio all won their matches yesterday.

Pentwyn Dynamo squeezed home 2-1 at Risca, while Llanwern triumphed 2-0 at Abertillery and new boys Llangeinor were 4-2 winners over Cwmamman United.

Seven Sisters were very much on song as they hammered Chepstow 6-2, and Gwynfi United are still looking for their first point of the season after crashing to their 12th defeat, going down 5-3 at home to Ystradgynlais.

Improving Porthcawl Town won 2-1 at Newcastle Emlyn thanks to a brace of goals by Tom Warren, while Cwmbran Celtic edged home 1-0 at Goytre and Llansawel newcomers to the league, beat Llantwit Fardre 2-0 courtesy of goals by Paul Carpenter and Lee Fleming.

Welsh premier results round up

If Steve Bleasdale wanted to make a good first impression on the passionate Bangor City fans, then today was the perfect start. Llanelli arrived at Farrar Road having won their last eight Principality Welsh Premier League games, and the inconsistent Citizens slammed them 4-0 in Bleasdale's first match since his appointment on Tuesday.

Lee Webber struck his first for the club just before half time and Michael Walsh scored either side of a brace from Marc Lloyd Williams to send the leaders home with a lot to think about, if they are to dispose TNS of the crown this year.

Connah's Quay Nomads continued their excellent run of form to go second in the League against Port Talbot. The Steelmen took the lead through Lee John but second half goals from Christian Sergeant and Tommy Mutton gave Nev Powell's men the three points.

Aberystwyth also continued their excellent run of form with a 1-0 win over Mid Wales rivals, Caersws. It took a late Barri Morgan goal, just two minutes from time to seal it. The two meet in the Loosemores Cup Semi Final in ten days, so Aber have the confidence boost going into that one.

Mark Jones' Carmarthen were held at home by a late Porthmadog effort. Kaid Mohammed is in great form for the Old Golds and he scored just after the half hour to give the home side the lead, but the visitors equalised through Kevin Roberts in the last minute of normal time.

Welshpool are quietly climbing up the table and easily disposed of Cwmbran at the Stadium. The visitors scored three first half goals with leading scorer Calvin Davies netting a brace and Aden Shannon scoring the third. Mike Parkins gave the Crows hope by pulling one back on the stroke of Half Time, but Steve Rogers added the fourth with seven minutes remaining for a comfortable win.

Struggling Caernarfon were slammed 4-1 at home by the rejuvenated Haverfordwest. Winger Chris O'Sullivan gave the Bluebirds the perfect start on seven minutes, before Richie Adams scored a first half brace. Former Colwyn Bay striker, Darren Wright scored his first for the club on the hour but County's Jack Christopher responded within five minutes to make the long journey home a very pleasant one.

Financial backing for Cwmbran

CWMBRAN Town have been walking one of the longest financial tightropes since benefactor John Colley, took a back seat.

But while he has gone out of the limelight he is not forgotten and remains very much concerned over the club's future in the Principality Building Society Welsh Premier League.

It is understood that he is using his influence in trying to land a major sponsor for the club who have a Father Christmas - although I believe it should be Mother Christmas on this occasion - arriving early to stand the admission prices for fans attending tomorrow afternoon's home game with Welshpool (kick-off 2.30pm).

And for the game all under-12s must be accompanied by an adult and will receive a goody bag along with a free season ticket for the remainder of the season.

It is undoubtedly a hard time for Cwmbran - and that's really nothing new - but the club is playing the cash-backing card tightly to their chest, although I understand their is more than one person (or organisation) interested in helping.

Latest Welsh premier transfers

Connah's Quay has completed the re-signing of his former skipper, Danny Jelicoe. The central defender has returned to the Nomads after spending just over five months with Hednesford Town. He was immediately appointed skipper of the Unibond Premier League outfit but Pitmen's manager, Phil Starbuck relinquished those duties from him in October stating that he was struggling with the responsibility of being a player and the captain. Things didn't get much better and with the bright start to the Nomads season, the opportunity to return to Nev Powell's fold was too good an opportunity to miss.

Jellicoe first signed for Connah's Quay in July 2004 from Kidsgrove Athletic and previously, he played at Newtown and Caernarfon in the Welsh Premier. To date, he has made 118 Welsh Premier appearances for the Nomads, Newtown and Caernarfon and will go straight into the side for tomorrow's match against Port Talbot at Cae-y-castell. Chris Taylor and skipper Marc Limbert are both still suspended so the 30 year old Clatterbridge born defender should replace Taylor at centre back and could even replace Limbo as captain.

Also on the move is Caersws left back, Tom Sparey. The former Shrewsbury Town trainee joined the Bluebirds last season, but has never commanded a regular first team spot. Sparey had been linked with local rivals Newtown, but he has opted to become the first signing of new Bangor boss, Steve Bleasdale. Meanwhile, robust midfielder, Dane Williams, has joined Port Talbot Town from Merthyr. A former Welsh League player with Blaenrhondda, Williams scored over 30 goals at the Valley club and he is an excellent finisher and known for his out-of-the-box efforts.

Newtown have further strengthened their squad with the signing of striker Tom Reynolds from Aberystwyth. Reynolds spent four years at Latham Park making around fifty appearances, whilst youngster Barry Bellis has joined from Bettws. He is a former TNS Youth and Reserves midfielder, who has sat on the bench for the Saints in the League, but didn't make a First team appearance.

Llanelli out to make up for cup loss

Llanelli head to Bangor tomorrow looking to extend their lead at the top of the Principality Welsh Premier to five points. With The New Saints and Rhyl meeting at Treflan on Sunday in a televised showdown, the Reds get the opportunity to increase the pressure on their main rivals with a victory at Farrar Road.

A repeat of last season's 3-1 triumph would certainly satisfy visiting manager Peter Nicholas who was desperately disappointed with his side's first domestic loss of the season in midweek - 2-1 at home to Aberystwyth Town in the quarter-finals of the Loosemores League Cup

"It was very disappointing to lose that one," Nicholas said.

"It was a cup we were keen to win as the prize money for collecting the trophy is £10,000.

"The weather was atrocious. Conditions were really bad and that was a great leveller. That said, we had enough chances to have won it."

Turning to tomorrow's match, Nicholas said: "Bangor are always difficult to beat on their own ground and their players will be keen to impress their new manager which will make it an even more difficult task for us."

Bangor release Clayton Blackmore

Bangor city have wasted little time in releasing former player/manager Clayton Blackmore.

The 42 year old had had looked to stay on at Farrar Road as a player, but in the identical case of Deryn Brace at Haverfordwest, the new managers look to stamp their own authority on the squad, and quickly moved out the former managers.

Blackmore had played near 200 welsh premier games for the club, since he joined back in October 2000.

Many had thought that at 42 Blackmore would finally call it a day after a very successful career which included 39 caps for Wales.

But he has chosen not to hang up the boots just yet and has signed for fellow north Wales side Porthmadog.

Carmarthen target top four

Mark Jones has urged his side to bounce back from back-to-back defeats and climb back into the Welsh Premier's top four with victory over Porthmadog on Saturday (2.30).

Carmarthen Town lost to Caersws in the Challenge Cup and Aberystwyth in the league last week, and Jones hopes the Old Gold can catch up with the title-chasing pack with three points this weekend.

The 4-2 defeat by Aberystwyth saw Town fall three points behind fourth-placed Connah's Quay Nomads, but a win at Richmond Park over 14th-placed Porthmadog would put them back in the melting pot.

"We have got to beat Porthmadog on Saturday," said Jones. "I would like to think we can. We have tasted European football for the past two seasons, and if we have ambitions of doing so next season, we have to be in the mix at the top spots.

"The top four is our target and a win on Saturday would put us right back in there. They will be no pushovers, that's for sure. They have already beaten The New Saints in the Cup on their own turf, so that is an indication of what they are capable of."

Jones is expected to have a full squad available but for defender Liam Hancock, who starts a three-match ban after being sent off after 31 minutes of Town's league defeat to Aberystwyth.

Included in the squad however is midfielder Paul Fowler. Not to be confused with the former Llanelli striker of the same name, Town's 21-year-old former Bridgend Street star has started the club's previous two games after impressing in training.

County and Beadle hit by FAW charges

An FAW statement released today says: Following its investigation into the events that occurred during the FA Cup match Newport County v Swansea City played on the November 11, 2006, the FAW has issued charges of misconduct against Newport County FC relating specifically to the alleged improper conduct of their manager, Mr Peter Beadle, and the alleged missile throwing by their supporters.

The Football Association of Wales has also issued charges of misconduct against Mr Peter Beadle relating specifically to the allegations of his use of offensive and insulting language, as well as his aggressive and provocative conduct.

Newport County FC and Mr Peter Beadle have ten days to respond to the charges.

The case against Beadle relates to allegations of his use of offensive and insulting language, as well as the referee’s complaint of aggressive and provocative conduct.

Gwent police are also scrutinising TV footage of the match at Spytty Park, together with video recordings taken by their own officers.

Keep your noses out, FAW rap Assembly

WELSH football chiefs have launched an extraordinary blast at the Assembly for trying to reform the way the game is run here.

FA of Wales bosses had already riled the political powers-that-be by refusing to attend a meeting of the Assembly's culture committee held specifically to debate a major restructuring of Welsh football.

And FAW secretary David Collins followed that up with an outspoken article about the whole matter in the Wales v Liechtenstein match programme.

Collins even declared that if the FAW took notice of the Assembly's suggestions of how they should fund affiliated leagues and clubs, they would face potential bankruptcy.

"Will the siren of voices who would have us dispose of our funds assist us then?" asked Collins.

In the programme article, titled Paying Our Way, Collins defends the way the FAW spend their money and is heavily critical of attempts from the Assembly to interfere and dictate where that funding should go.

He says FAW "actions" speak louder than the "words" of a few politicians.

Collins' comments, which come on top of the FAW's decision to snub the September culture committee meeting, are sure to anger Minister Alan Pugh and his fellow AMs.

The FAW resistance to political interference comes at a time when the English FA have agreed a root and branch reform of their own organisation following the Government commissioned Burns report.

But Collins makes it clear in his programme article that no such thing will happen in Wales and that the FAW are happy with the way they run the game.

Carmarthen Brace themselves for new arrival

Carmarthen Town have today completed the transfer of former Haverfordwest Manager Deryn Brace. The defender, 31, spent five seasons at the New Bridge Meadow but was surprisingly replaced last month by Derek Brazil, citing extra work commitments as the reason for his and the club's amicable decision.
Brace stated that he would continue to play for the Bluebirds but immediately took a break from the game. However, it became more and more evident that he would not be returning to the club and then a few weeks later, County issued a statement confirming that fact. He played for the Bluebirds 130 times, scoring just the one goal.

Brace has played for the Richmond Park side before, making ten full appearances in 2000/01 season after leaving Wrexham and also played for Llanelli twice in the same year. He then went back home to his local Welsh Premier Side and the man from Tenby became an instant hit. He became the club's Player/Manager in June 2002, replacing John Lewis and is the most successful Manager in the club's history. Brace took his side to a highest ever third position in 2003/04 and they subsequently played in the UEFA Cup.

He is unlikely to have a coaching role in the First team set-up as Manager Mark Jones is well assisted by John Karamousis and Mark Aizlewood, but his experience as a player will be invaluable at the back. Nobody has made either full back slot their own for Carmarthen this season since the departure of last term regulars Martyn Giles and Luke Hardy, who have left for Hereford United and Ireland respectively. New signings Terry Evans, Tom Ramasut, Lee Denner and Stewart Edwards as well as Hayden Fleming have all been tried but Jones may have found his solution at Right Back in Brace.

Meanwhile, the rumour mill is turning thick and fast at the moment and it is likely that Adie Harris and Tony Bird, who ironically, were two of Deryn Brace's final signings look set to leave with Tiverton Town a likely destination for Harris.

Aberaman 1st club to apply to join WPL

ENTO Aberaman currently lying top of the welsh league division 1, have become the first feeder club to officially apply to join the welsh premier league.

having already shown their intent to make a mark in the top flight feeder division by signing former nationwide striker Kurt Nogan, and recently making a bid to sign Swansea City's Leon Knight.

But the club admits they have a lot of work to do at Aberaman Park before it could host welsh premier football.

But they are hoping to use the Michael Sobell Sports Centre Stadium, while they complete the necessary work to their own ground, and they are seeking the help of the local council to find a siutable alternative in the short term.

One of the main forces behind the club is former FAW president Brian Fear, Fear still maintains a daily interest in the club.

Ponty looking to get back to winning ways

Pontypridd Town aim to shake off their cup blues when they return to MacWhirter Welsh Football League action against Barry Town at Ynysangharad Park tonight (7pm).

They have crashed out of the Welsh and Shamrock Cup in their last two matches, going down 4-2 at home to Caldicot Town in their latest outing.

Ponty have been hit by an injury crisis, had only 10 fit players for the tie against Caldicot and will be without goalkeeper Mark Poole against Barry.

Poole is unavailable due to work commitments and Ponty didn't have a back-up 'keeper until they signed Llanelli's Gareth Williams today.

He joins Ponty on a dual contract with the Welsh Premier side.

If manager Ryan Nicholls' search had failed then he would have gone between the posts himself.

He played twice last season and would have to be pressed into service again.

Atif Bashir was due to make his debut for Pontypridd against Caldicot, but had to cry off injured. Former Dinas Powys player Nathan Hosgood, signed from Bettws, makes his first appearance for Pontypridd evening.

Steve Evans will make a surprise debut for Wales in Tuesday's friendly with Liechtenstein at Wrexham's Racecourse.
