WELSH LEAGUE U19

AFAN LIDO 2-0 PONTARDAWE

By Peter Reynolds

Having watched this game the surprise was that we won 2-0.

For large periods of the first have we were outplayed while both sides missed chances to improve the score in the second half.
We started the game strongly and had all the early pressure with Remi Whitelock testing the keeper with an early shot.
We took the lead on 7 minutes when a Corey Thomas cross was missed by a defender and Steve Hughes scored from close range. We continued to take the game to the visitors and it was no surprise when we doubled our lead after 14 minutes. A forty yard diagonal pass from Scott Bamsey found the overlapping Paul Evans who crossed for Remi Whitelock
to score.

Almost from that moment Pontardawe sprang into life and we found it difficult to obtain any worthwhile possession.

They controlled virtually the remainder of the half and should have reduced the arrears on 31 minutes but a free header sailed past the post.

Minutes later David Anderson tipped over a free kick and from the resulting corner Pontardawe hit the post.

Early in the second half Carl Payne played in Paul Evans but the keeper was off his line to block the attempt.  On 55 minutes Carl played in Shaun Best but with only the keeper to beat his effort was saved as was Carl's follow up effort which the keeper saved at the expense of a corner.

On 67 minutes Remi picked up a loose ball in midfield and let fly from 30 yards only to see his effort rebound from the post.  Corey Thomas was well placed but fired over the bar and with 5 minutes left  Shaun Best crossed for Jay Evans to have a close range effort blocked by what was now an overworked keeper.
