WELSH LEAGUE U19

AFAN LIDO 3-1 HAVERFORDWEST

By Peter Reynolds

The youth went into this game with a 100% home record and Aberaman without an away point.  As is quite often the case both these sequences were changed in this game.

Aberaman started the brighter and took the game to us, they had a strong midfield and a willingness to chase everything.

After 9 minutes we created our first chances with two efforts cleared off the line in a goalmouth scramble, the second at the expense of a corner.  A couple of minutes later Steve Hughes squared the ball to Scott Bamsey whose first time effort from 25 yards was unfortunately straight at the keeper. Steve Hughes tried his luck from the edge of the area but his effort was just the wrong side of the post.

On 25 minutes we took the lead, a sweeping move involving several players ended with Corey Thomas chesting the ball down to Shaun Best who fired in an unstoppable shot from 25 yards.

We were unable to capitalise on this,  Damon Thomas had a couple of efforts that went just wide while just before half time Corey Thomas cut in from the left but his effort hit the side netting.

Aberaman seized the initiative in the second half and we failed to compete.  They monopolised the ball and grew in confidence.

On 65 minutes they should have equalised but from a good position in front of goal their striker shot straight at Rory McCreesh. 5 minutes later Rory saved a free kick, we went down the other end but Corey Thomas failed to get enough power in his effort from 25 yards.

The inevitable equaliser came on 75 minutes and then we started pushing forward.  With 7 minutes to go, Damon Thomas shot wide, a minute later Remi Whitelock 'scored' but his effort was correctly ruled offside.

With 3 minutes to go Aberaman had their last chance but Rory McCreesh kept us in the game with a fantastic save. We went down the other end and Shaun Best headed the ball goalwards having just beaten the keeper to the ball, unfortunately it didn't quite the power to go over the line. Two defenders raced back to clear two yards off the goalline.
