The
reserves completed their fixtures with a 2-0 win against top of
the table Garden Village and in the process inflicted their
first away defeat of the season.
Without a recognised keeper Mike Holmes played in goal and with
being disrespectful to a guy in his 40's who doesn't play
regularly it's amazing that they failed to score today.
I missed most
of the first half because the other team in Red that I support
were on the box. When I arrived I was told that Shaun Best had
gone close a couple of times and in fact just before half time
he lobbed the keeper but he managed to get back to clear it from
close to the goal line. Phil Holmes then picked up a loose ball
and from 25 yards shot but unfortunately straight at the keeper.
In the second
half Village kept hitting high balls into the area obviously
testing out Mike but between Phil Holmes and Justin Williams
more often than not we coped ok. Most chances they created went
either wide or high of the target, they got more and more
frustrated and it showed in their play. On 77 minutes Mike
Holmes under pressure punched straight to their striker who
hammered it goalwards. Unfortunately for him it was straight at
Mike who held the shot as if he'd played in goals all his life.
Spurred on by
this we took the lead three minutes later in bizarre fashion.
Their keeper kicked the ball out but he hit a defender who was
standing in front of him. The ball fell to Craig Jones who from
25 yards blasted the ball into the empty net. Mike Holmes was
then injured in the next Village attack but after several
minutes was able to continue. Four minutes from time we went two
up, Shaun Best made ground down the left and won a corner which
was cleared to Scott Bamsey 35 yards out. He knocked the ball
forward and Phil Holmes managed to keep the ball in play, he
rolled it in the Aaron Keefe who scored from 10 yards. Craig
Jones then had a 25 yard shot well saved by the keeper who
managed to tip it over for a corner.
