Lido 2-0
up at half time |
|
With regular
updates from Jenner Park (By Alan Howells) I am informed
that we comfortably lead the former domestic giants by
3-0.
We were
leading 2-0 with goals from Ian Jones and Karl Lewis, and
just after half time Jon Felton added the third, in what
should be enough to see us through to round 3?

Lido hit
Gwynfi for six |
|
Last night
the first team took on near neighbours Gwynfi United in a
friendly to sharpen up the squad ahead of Saturdays
important welsh cup match at Jenner Park.
The side
turned on the style against the lower league opposition by
putting six goals past them, the pick of the six was a
stunning 40 yard screamer from Carl Evan finding the
bottom corner.
And a
stranger to the score sheet Phil Holmes (only ever scored
5 competitive goals at the Lido) went off and came back on
playing up front bagging a brace:)
There
were a few scares for the Gaffers as Steve, Liam and Ian pulled up and didn't last
the full game.

Lido take
on Gwynfi tonight in a friendly |
|
The first's
have arranged a friendly for tonight against Gwynfi,
originally tonight's opponents were Trefelin but they
pulled out last night.
Gaffer
Phil say's "it will be 90 mins for players coming
back from injury to get some match practice under their
belts ahead of Saturday's cup match against Barry Town
"
Coming
back from injury for Saturdays game are Steve Parry, Dan
Williams, Chris Latham and Chris Piper.
But Craig
Martin will be out for a couple of weeks due to the badly
bruised shins he picked up in the league game against
Caerleon last Friday night.
Talking
about Barry Town they have issued a press release ahead of
our game. Read it bellow.
Barry
Town take on Afan Lido in the Welsh Cup second round this
Saturday, 30th, at Jenner Park 2.30pm, having
defeated Croesyceiliog 3-2 after extra time in a thrilling
first round encounter in Barry two weeks ago. The match
could have ended 7-4 to the Town with crossbars and posts
rattling and splendid saves from both teams’ keepers.
The
match is free to all children accompanied by an adult and
free to all students with ID so a bumper crowd of over 300
is expected on Saturday to cheer Barry on to Welsh Cup
glory. Schools are also being given hundreds of free
tickets.
Barry’s
new striker, 6’3” Zak Mizba, pictured above, is hoping
to score in his third consecutive cup match. Zak scored
the Town’s equaliser in the League Cup against Bridgend
three weeks ago and scored the winner in the 3-2 victory.
Signed from Division One leaders, Neath, classy 19 year
old Zak had spent three years at Blackburn Rovers until he
was released last year.
Barry
Town have also re-signed 6’5” striker Gareth Hemmens
to partner Zak in attack. ‘Too tall’ was Barry’s top
scorer last season before a heart scare caused him to
temporarily stop playing football. With a goal every two
games, Hemmens should join up with Zak to form the cutting
strike force the Town have missed this season.
Manager,
Gavin Price, explains Barry’s poor start due to having
had to create a new team this season. Last season’s
Assistant, Francis Ford, became Manager of Bryntirion and
took five of his players with him. In addition, due to the
Council’s extortionate financial demand of £12,500 a
year for the next 5 years for Barry to play at Jenner
Park, there is practically no money to even pay the
players expenses. Barry expected to lose the first few
matches this year but as the new team takes shape, results
should start going Barry’s way.

Newport almost equalled Swansea's scoreline but missed out
by a goal to come out 6-2 winners.

Ladies team are next out on October 1st with an away

the same day UWIC Ladies play their league opener with a
tough away game to table toppers Swansea City. The 3rd

Lido made
to battle all the way in the cup |
|
Already this season
things are looking brighter for the Lido.
Last season we were
out of both cup competitions at the first hurdles, and
with today's win over
Penrhiwceiber Rangers
we are through to the 2nd round in both cups.
Today's game against
Penrhiwceiber got off to a good start when in the 16th
minute we opened the scoring with a John Felton goal, Ian
Jones made it 2-0, and it didn't take Rangers long to half
the deficit when they made it 2-1.
The goal that sealed
it came from Liam McCreesh to finish the games scoring at
3-1.
The Lido were made to
work all the way by a good battling performance from
Rangers.
